Helix Sleep offers hybrid mattresses made with polyfoam comfort systems, dual-layer covers, and pocketed coil support cores reinforced using polyfoam base layers. Where To Buy A Helix Mattress

Helix Sleep allows full mattress customization. Purchasers are requested to fill out a questionnaire that asks for their weight, height, firmness preferences, sleep position, and other factors. Based on these results, Helix Sleep will recommend one of the following 6 mattress models; each respective model provides a one-of-a-kind combination of support and firmness:

  • Helix Sunset: ‘Soft’ firmness, targeted cushioning, and balanced support
  • Helix Moonlight: ‘Soft’ firmness, moderate cushioning, and additional support
  • Helix Midnight: ‘Medium’ firmness, targeted cushioning, and balanced support
  • Helix Dusk: ‘Medium’ firmness, moderate cushioning, and extra support
  • Helix Twilight: ‘Firm’ firmness, targeted cushioning, and balanced support
  • Helix Dawn: ‘Firm’ firmness, moderate cushioning, and additional support

Helix Sleep hybrids that have targeted cushioning conform closely, which makes them ideal for side sleepers. While those that have moderate cushioning do not conform as much and are ideal for pretty much all sleep positions. Lighter individuals may feel most comfy on models with balanced support, while people that weigh 130 pounds or more tend to prefer the variants with extra support.

Helix Sleep also markets 2 mattresses with dual-firmness, the Helix Dual Balanced (with targeted cushioning and balanced support) and the Helix Dual Extra (with moderate cushioning and additional support). Both of these variants have one ‘Firm’ side and one ‘Soft’ side, making them ideal for couples with different preferences. Lastly, the Helix Nightfall is a hybrid designed for bigger, heavier individuals. This variant has an additional layer of memory foam for maximum support.

My review of Helix Sleep mattresses found that the customizable selection conforms to sleepers with a wide range of body types and firmness preferences. The mattresses also offer strong edge support, isolate motion transfer nicely, and create less noise than the average hybrid. Where To Buy A Helix Mattress

Construction Where To Buy A Helix Mattress

All nine of the different iterations of this mattress will differ slightly in construction, but for 6 of the 9 variants, the construction will be fairly similar. The six core models (listed above) are 10 inches tall, composed of 6 inches of individually wrapped coils and 4 inches of foam.

Helix mattresses differ in density and firmness depending on the foams used in order to attain more/less support and more/less firmness. The four different foams utilized within Helix mattresses are memory foam, high-grade polyurethane foam, Helix Dynamic Foam, and a DuraDense Foam (aka support foam). Not all the mattresses have all of the foams – some just have 3 of the 4 – but it really shouldn’t matter much for the consumer. The foams are just levers that Helix Sleep can pull in order to offer 9 unique versions (and supposedly have a mattress for everybody). Where To Buy A Helix Mattress

Below, I briefly talk about the construction (materials and quality) of the average Helix mattress, the Helix Midnight.

Cover – Initially, all Helix mattresses come with the same cover, made of 100% polyester. I found it to be thin and pliable, allowing for some nice breathability. However, if you would like something more luxurious, you can choose to swap out the standard cover for the brand’s UltraCool one, which is composed of a phase-change material to regulate temperature.

Comfort Layer – Up top, you will encounter a thick layer of memory foam. This type of foam has a slow response to pressure, which means you are likely to experience some great body shaping. Even though it may seem odd for a supposedly medium firmness mattress to incorporate a memory foam comfort layer, it is important to remember that the existence of deep sinkage doesn’t necessarily translate to softness; in fact, most of the time it generates quite a firm feel.

Transition Layer – After sinking through the memory foam comfort layer, you’ll discover a transition layer of poly foam. This layer works to suppress the sinkage of the comfort layer and set a supportive, medium firm feeling as you hit the individually wrapped coils below.

Support Layer – The bulk of the mattress consists of this segment of pocketed coils. This system gives a supportive lift to the structure, working to put the sleeper “on top” of the mattress, as opposed to “in it”. Since the coils are wrapped individually, they’re also going to encourage additional breathability as air flows in between the spaces in the coils.

Base Layer – Last, you will find a thin segment of high-density poly foam. This segment doesn’t affect the feel of the bed too much, functioning mostly to give the pocketed coils something off of which to react.

Firmness and Support

After having a peek at the construction of the Helix mattresses, let’s discuss their varying firmness levels and feels.

helix-mattress-firmness-and-support-scale

The firmness level of the Helix is going to differ widely depending on the version you select. The Helix Midnight and Dusk, have moderate firmness levels, which will be quite versatile and thus exceptionally popular. If you are more particular, however, Helix Sleep is happy to oblige you with more options.

Lying down on the Midnight, the memory foam comfort layer feels soft and produces some top quality body contouring, while the rest of the materials in the Midnight work to counteract this and create an overall firmer composition. The pocketed coils and the firmer support foams also help with re-positioning.

For those who sleep on their back, there’s enough good comfort material in the mattress to conform to your lumbar while supporting your back in a neutral position. For larger buyers or those who want a firmer bed, there are 2 more options for you in the Helix Dawn and Helix Twilight models.

Majority of side sleepers will feel totally comfy on the Midnight, but, if you’re needing less pressure while still sticking with a versatile medium firmness, you might want to check out the Helix Dusk, which utilizes a body-conforming latex-alternative foam that’s breathable and gives the surface a little bit of bounce.

Those who sleep on their side typically need to be mindful of pressure since they sleep with all their weight on a smaller area. Those who are smaller than average or people in the market for a lot of pressure relief might want to stick to the plusher models.

Stomach sleepers should feel comfortable in the Midnight, particularly if this isn’t their primary position or they have a tendency to change things up a lot. Firmer choices might be preferable for exclusive stomach sleepers so they can make sure their hips don’t dip and over-arch their backbone.

Lastly, Helix Sleep recommends Helix mattresses for sleepers around 350 pounds or partners that weigh a maximum of 250 pounds each. If you or your spouse are substantially larger than average, the company has also created a mattress called the Nightfall that’s made to accommodate a total weight of 1000 pounds.

Partners with differing types of bodies or preferences can also select a dual comfort model that combines Firm with Plush.

Keep in mind that if none of these options feel right, you may always have a look at the four other mattresses in the new collection: the Sunset (plush, softer than the Moonlight), Dusk (medium feel, a little firmer compared to the Midnight), Twilight (firm, made for side sleepers), or Dawn (the firmest variant of the bunch).

Motion Transfer

Next up, let us chat about motion transfer, or the amount of disturbance that is noticeable from 1 side of the mattress to the other. While this is going to be important for many buyers, those who doze with a spouse may find it particularly interesting as it’ll illuminate just how bothered you may be by your bed mate’s nighttime movements. Where To Buy A Helix Mattress

According to my research, Helix exceeds expectations for hybrid mattresses in this space due to the amount and quality of foam it contains, as well as the pocketed coils that help keep motion at its source. If you are a light sleeper worried that motion from the other side of the mattress will wake you, you should not have much concern with this hybrid. I would say that any of the Helix mattresses would be a good option for couples.

Sinkage

When purchasing a new mattress, most people would like to know whether they will feel like they’re sinking “into” the mattress or laying “on top” of it.

Even though you are likely to experience some immediate sinkage in the uppermost foam layers, by the time you sink through those layers, you are going to find the pocketed coils and feel fantastic support. This combination will interest a wide assortment of individuals, but will suit back and stomach sleepers in particular.

Edge Support

While I do feel the foam compress as I sit near the edge of the Helix Midnight, the coils prevent the mattress from compressing a lot beyond that. I feel very secured seated on the mattress.

In my view, Helix mattresses perform above average for edge support compared to other bed-in-a-box brands, and this is due to their newly updated edges that contain reinforcement in the coil system. There can be a little compression at the comfort foams when you sit with all your weight on the side, but lying on the side will feel comfortable and secure. Partners who need more space to stretch out typically appreciate strong edges.

Laying down, I feel like I can get near the edge of the mattress without feeling like I’ll fall over or be pushed off the mattress. Overall, I think the Helix has great edge support.

100 Night Sleep Trial

Among the best features of purchasing a mattress-in-a-box online is the sleep trials they usually include. Helix Sleep is no different. You create the mattress that’s meant for you, place your order, and in two weeks, it is sent to your door. From the moment you click to purchase the mattress, you’ve got 100 nights to test it out (minus the time for delivery, so it’s more like 90 nights). If it isn’t ideal, you can return it free of charge, and receive a full refund.

Should you return the mattress, it isn’t resold or restocked. Actually, the company finds a local place to donate it. When there’s no way the company can find a way to donate your refunded mattress, they have it recycled instead. Where To Buy A Helix Mattress

Helix Warranty

Helix offers an amazing 10-year warranty that covers defects, but it comes with limitations, exceptions, while the burden of proof is on the customer (like most warranties). Of course, you must be the first owner of the mattress to make use of the warranty, and you need to be sure that you keep your receipt as proof of purchase.

As long as you follow all of Helix’s expectations for use, your warranty should be valid. That means you need to use a proper foundation (no adjustable bed frames or slats more than 4 inches apart) and that you don’t use the Helix improperly – no jumping on it!

If your Helix begins to show an indentation of 1″ or more, something that typically happens when low-density foams break down, then you could be eligible for a repair or replacement of your mattress.

What’s The Best Way To Care For Your Helix?

Helix mattresses require no turning, but it is recommended that you rotate the mattress possibly a couple of times a year to prevent it from wearing down from excess sagging.

For regular cleanup, it’s suggested to use cold water along gentle dish soap to clean any stains or dirt. Be certain that you clean using soft circular motions, rather than rubbing.
