Helix Sleep sells hybrid mattresses made with dual-layer covers, polyfoam comfort systems, and pocketed coil support cores fortified using polyfoam base layers. The Helix Mattress

Helix Sleep allows complete mattress customization. Buyers are asked to complete a questionnaire that asks for their weight, height, sleep position, firmness preferences, and other elements. Then based on these results, Helix Sleep will suggest one of the following six mattress variants; each respective variant offers a unique combination of support and firmness:

  • Helix Sunset: ‘Soft’ firmness, targeted cushioning, and balanced support
  • Helix Moonlight: ‘Soft’ firmness, moderate cushioning, and extra support
  • Helix Midnight: ‘Medium’ firmness, targeted cushioning, and balanced support
  • Helix Dusk: ‘Medium’ firmness, moderate cushioning, and additional support
  • Helix Twilight: ‘Firm’ firmness, targeted cushioning, and balanced support
  • Helix Dawn: ‘Firm’ firmness, moderate cushioning, and extra support

The Helix Mattress

Helix Sleep mattresses that have targeted cushioning conform closely, making them ideal for those who sleep on their side. While those that have moderate cushioning do not conform as much and are great for all sleep positions. Lighter men and women may feel most comfy on models with balanced support, while people who weigh 130 lbs or more often favor the variants with extra support.

Helix Sleep also offers two models with dual-firmness, the Helix Dual Balanced (with targeted cushioning and balanced support) and the Helix Dual Extra (with extra support and moderate cushioning). Both these mattresses have one ‘Soft’ side and one ‘Firm’ side, which makes them ideal for couples with differing preferences. Last, the Helix Nightfall is a hybrid designed for bigger, heavier people. This mattress has an extra layer of memory foam for maximum support.

My review of Helix Sleep mattresses discovered that the customizable selection accommodates sleepers with a large variety of firmness preferences and body types. The mattresses also have strong edge support, isolate motion transfer well, and create less noise than the normal hybrid. The Helix Mattress

Construction The Helix Mattress

All nine of the different iterations of the mattress will differ slightly in construction, but for 6 of the 9 variants, the construction should be fairly similar. The six core variants (listed above) are 10 inches tall, made up of 6 inches of individually wrapped coils and 4 inches of foam.

Helix mattresses differ in firmness and density based on the foams used in order to achieve more/less support and more/less firmness. The four different foams utilized within Helix mattresses are memory foam, high-grade polyurethane foam, Helix Dynamic Foam, and a DuraDense Foam (aka support foam). Not all of the variants have all the foams – some just have three of the four – but it really won’t matter much for the buyer. The foams are merely levers that Helix Sleep can pull to be able to offer 9 unique versions (and supposedly have a mattress for everyone). The Helix Mattress

Below, I concisely talk about the construction (materials and quality) of your average Helix mattress, the Helix Midnight.

helix-midnight-construction

Cover – Initially, all Helix mattresses come with the same cover, made of 100% polyester. I thought it to be pliable and thin, allowing for some wonderful breathability. But, if you prefer something more amped up, you can elect to swap out the standard cover for the UltraCool one, which is made up of a phase-change material to regulate temperature.

Comfort Layer – On top, you will find a thick layer of memory foam. This material has a slow response to pressure, meaning you are probably going to encounter some great body contouring. Even though it may seem strange for a supposedly medium firmness mattress to incorporate a memory foam layer, it’s crucial to remember that the feeling of deep sinkage does not necessarily translate to softness; in fact, most of the time it generates quite a firm feeling.

Transition Layer – After sinking through the comfort layer, you’ll find a transition layer of poly foam. This layer of foam works to suppress the sinkage of the memory foam and set a supportive, medium firm feel as you hit the pocketed coils underneath.

Support Layer – The majority of the mattress consists of this section of individually wrapped coils. This system brings a supportive lift into the structure, working to position the sleeper “on top” of the bed, as opposed to “in it”. Because these coils are wrapped individually, they’re also likely to encourage extra breathability as air flows through the spaces in the coils.

Base Layer – Lastly, you will uncover a thin section of high-density poly foam. This layer does not affect the feel of the mattress too much, functioning mostly to give the individually wrapped coils something off of which to react.

Firmness and Support

After having a peek at the construction of the Helix mattresses, let’s talk about their different firmness levels and feels.

helix-mattress-firmness-and-support-scale

The firmness of the Helix will vary widely depending on which model you choose. The Helix Dusk and Midnight, have moderate firmness levels, which will be quite versatile and therefore best-selling. If you have more specific needs, however, Helix Sleep would be happy to oblige you with more choices.

Laying down on the Helix Midnight, the memory foam comfort layer feels soft and generates some quality body shaping, while the rest of the materials within the mattress work to counteract this and create an overall firmer structure. The individually-wrapped coils and the firmer support foams also assist with re-positioning.

For back sleepers, there is enough good comfort material in the Midnight to conform to your lower spine while supporting your back in a neutral position. For heavier sleepers or people who prefer a firmer mattress, there are two more options for you in the Helix Twilight and Helix Dawn variants.

Most side sleepers should feel perfectly comfortable on the Midnight, however, if you’re wanting a bit less pressure while still going with a flexible medium firmness, you may decide to take a look at the Helix Dusk, which utilizes a body-conforming latex-alternative foam that’s breathable and gives the surface a small bit of bounce.

Those who sleep on their side typically need to be more mindful of pressure because they sleep with most their weight on a tinier area. Those who are lighter than average or people in the market for plenty of pressure relief may want to stick to the plusher variants.

Stomach sleepers should feel supported in the Midnight, particularly if this is not their main position or they have a tendency to switch things up a lot. Firmer choices might be preferable for exclusive stomach sleepers so that they can ensure their hips do not dip and over-arch their spine.

Finally, the manufacturer recommends Helix for sleepers up to 350 lbs or partners who weigh up to 250 pounds each. If you or your spouse are substantially bigger than average, Helix has also produced a bed called the Nightfall that is built to accommodate a total weight of 1000 pounds.

Couples with different types of bodies or tastes can also pick a dual comfort model that pairs Firm with Plush.

Bear in mind that if none of these models feel right, you could always check out the 4 other models in the new collection: the Sunset (plush, softer compared to the Moonlight), Dusk (moderate feel, slightly firmer compared to the Midnight), Twilight (firm, designed for side sleepers), or Dawn (the firmest option in the collection).

Motion Transfer

Next up, let’s chat about motion transfer, or the amount of disturbance that is noticeable from 1 side of the mattress to the other. While this is going to be crucial for all people, those who doze with a spouse may find it especially intriguing as it’ll illuminate just how bothered you will be by your bed mate’s nighttime movements. The Helix Mattress

According to my research, Helix exceeds expectations for hybrid mattresses in this space due to the quantity and quality of foam it incorporates, in addition to the pocketed coils that help keep motion at its source. If you’re a light sleeper worried that movement from the opposite side of the bed will bother you, then you should not have much concern with this hybrid. I would say that any of the Helix mattresses would be a good choice for couples.

Sinkage

While buying a new mattress, most people would like to know whether they’ll feel as though they’re sinking “into” the mattress or laying “on top” of it.

While you’re going to experience a little immediate sinkage in the soft foam at the top, by the time you sink through those layers, you’ll reach the individually-wrapped coils and experience amazing support. This combo will interest a wide range of individuals, but will suit stomach and back sleepers in particular.

Edge Support

While I do feel the memory foam compress as I sit close to the edge of the bed, the pocketed coils stop the mattress from collapsing a lot . I feel very secured sitting on the mattress.

In my view, Helix mattresses are well above average when it comes to edge support in comparison to other bed-in-a-box brands, and this is because of their freshly updated edges containing reinforcement in the coil system. There can be some compression in the comfort foams when you sit with your entire weight on the side, but lying on the side should feel comfortable and secure. Couples who need more space to stretch out normally love stronger edges.

Laying down, I also feel like I could get close to the edge of the mattress without feeling like I’ll roll over or be pushed off the mattress. Overall, I believe that the Helix mattress has nice edge support.

100 Night Sleep Trial

One of the best features of purchasing a bed-in-a-box online is the sleep trials they usually include. Helix Mattress is no different. You customize the mattress that is made for you, place your order, and within a couple of weeks, it is sent to your door. From the moment you click to buy the mattress, you have 100 nights to try it out (minus the time for delivery, so it’s more like 90 nights). If it is not what you wanted, you can return it for free of charge, and receive a complete refund.

Should you return the mattress, it isn’t resold or restocked. Actually, Helix does its best to locate a local place to donate it. When there is no way Helix Sleep can find a way to donate your refunded mattress, it’s recycled instead. The Helix Mattress

Helix Warranty

Helix offers a generous 10-year guarantee that covers defects, but it comes with some limitations, exceptions, plus the burden of proof is on the customer (like most warranties). Needless to say, you should be the original owner of the mattress to use the guarantee, and you will need to be sure you save your receipt as proof of purchase.

Provided that you follow all the manufacturer’s expectations for use, your warranty will be valid. That means you will need to use a proper base (no adjustable bed frames or slats more than 4 inches apart) and that you don’t use the mattress improperly – no jumping on it!

If your Helix starts to show an indentation of 1 inch or longer, something that typically happens when low-density foams break down, you could qualify for a repair or replacement of your mattress.

What’s The Best Way To Care For Your Helix?

Helix mattresses need no turning, but it’s suggested that you rotate the mattress perhaps once or twice a year to prevent it from wearing down from excess sagging.

For regular cleanup, it’s suggested to use cool water along gentle dish detergent to clean any stains or dirt. Be certain to clean using gentle circular movements, instead of rubbing.
