Construction Soft Mattresses And Back Pain
The Puffy is basically a memory foam mattress that measures a total of 10 inches. It has a straight forward design with just two foam layers: one of thick memory foam and also another of high-density poly foam.
Soft Mattresses And Back Pain
Here are the details listed on their website:
10″ MATTRESS | 2 LAYERS
6.5 – 8.5 Medium-Firm Comfort
4″ Cooling Cloud Foam: Puffy’s gel-infused foam increases airflow 8x more than standard foam mattresses. Provides pressure relief and cooling.
6″ Firm Core Support Foam: Exceptional support and spinal alignment for healing sleep.
Cover – The cover fabric was pretty thin, which encourages airflow throughout the mattress. It’s made out of polyester, which makes for a soft and elastic feel.
Comfort Layer – Made up of 4″ of gel memory foam, the comfort layer here is super soft and has a very slow response to pressure, which means you’re very likely to sink deep for some intense body contouring. While it’s typical for all-foam beds such as this to incorporate a top section of memory foam, this layer particularly is incredibly thick and should bring some satisfying relief to the shoulders and hips. Although memory foam has a reputation for overheating in the nighttime , Puffy has been able to mitigate this using a gel infusion intended to keep things nice and cool while you sleep.
Support Layer – Composed of 6″ of high-density poly foam, unlike the memory foam layer above it, this section has a fast response to pressure and is quite firm. The combination of materials was specifically selected to bring targeted relief to the spine. Soft Mattresses And Back Pain
We found Puffy’s thick memory foam layer with a gentle, pressure-relieving texture. An absence of any kind of transition foam means that you’re very likely to interact mainly with the high-density poly foam as you quickly sink through the memory foam comfort layer. Because of this, you’re most likely to feel as though you’re sleeping more “in” this mattress than “on top” of it. Although, if you want an even softer feel, you might want to check out the Puffy Lux, which has an additional layer of memory foam for an ultra-plush vibe.
One other important aspect to consider when purchasing a new mattress is where pressure points will form while lying on top of it.
To help you picture where these tension spots might be, I placed a pressure map over the mattress and lied on my back, side, and stomach. You may see the results on the chart where pressure is represented from blue (low pressure) to red (high pressure).
Back – Lying on my back, I could really feel myself sinking into the mattress, with the memory foam in the top layer working to contour to my own body and fill in the space at my lumbar region. While this resulted in some great pressure relief in this position, it did make it hard to move around and change positions.
Side – Rolling on my side, I felt a few pressure relief. I’m not overly surprised with this as side sleepers have a tendency to go for softer mattresses which provide cushiony support to the shoulders and hips, typical problem areas for those who sleep on their sides.
Stomach – Though the thick memory foam comfort layer is a big win for side sleepers, it’s a bit of a mixed bag for stomach sleepers who generally opt for firmer mattresses that keep the spine in an even alignment. Here, I could feel my hips sinking out of line with my shoulders, which caused some discomfort in this position.
Now, let’s take a look at the Puffy’s motion transfer, or the amount of disturbance detectable from one side of the mattress into the other.
To demonstrate this motion transfer, I dropped a 10lb. steel ball from heights of 4 inches, 8 inches and 12 inches and measured the disturbance it caused: the bigger the lines, the bigger the disturbance.
FYI: Each drop is meant to symbolize a different movement you’re most likely to experience in bed, from tossing and turning (4″) to getting out of bed (8″) all the way to full on jumping (12″).
These are actually quite interesting motion transfer results. You’ll see a slight spike in initial movement across the drops that quickly dissipates, which I’d attribute to the thick memory foam comfort layer. This material is great at absorbing and dampening motion, which makes it so you are not likely to be overly disturbed by your partner’s tossing and turning in the night.
When purchasing a new mattress}, most people want to know whether they will feel as though they’re sinking “into” the mattress or laying “on top” of it. To visualize this sinkage, I put four balls of varying sizes and densities on the mattress and measured how much they compressed the surface.
6 lb medicine ball: 1.5 inches of sinkage.
10 lb steel ball: 2.5 inches of sinkage.
50 lb medicine ball: 4.5 inches of sinkage.
100 lb medicine ball: 7 inches of sinkage.
What this tells me is that you are likely to sink deeply through the foam layers in this mattress, resulting in a stuck-in-the-bed type feel that’ll make it a bit tricky to change positions. Soft Mattresses And Back Pain
The edge support on the Puffy mattress will feel secure and create a sound, edge to edge usable sleep surface. The dense base foam coupled with the supportive memory foam should create a very strong perimeter. Sleeping on this mattress you are able to feel a consistent feel across the whole surface without having a “rolling out of the bed” feel. So far as sitting on the edge goes, you will feel some support.
101 Night Sleep Trial and Guarantee
The Puffy mattress has a 101 night sleep trial period. This trial period allows for more than enough time to try this mattress out. Giving you and your body roughly 3 months to adjust to the new and improved feel of your memory foam mattress. It is a good idea to note that you should make the most of really testing this mattress in this time period. Anytime you get a new mattress your body needs a few weeks to even months to completely adapt. If for any reason you reach the end of your trial period and it isn’t a good fit, Puffy will easily work with you to return and refund your purchase.
This mattress has a lifetime warranty which goes above and beyond what the standard warranty for the mattress industry is. This warranty indicates that Puffy actually backs their product. Covering any abnormal flaws or manufacturing errors. Minus the typical wear and tear of a mattress. This provides consumers with the confidence that this is a mattress that the business is going to stand behind.

Puffy Mattress Sleep Temperature?
The Puffy mattress incorporates cooling technology in every material of the mattress. The top layer of memory foam is a patent-pending cooling cloud foam which uses conduction and convection to dissipate heat and keep it away from the body. Additionally,a it is infused with gel that increases the airflow 8x more than standard foam mattresses.
The base foam is dense and supportive to make a solid base that won’t let you sink into the mattress and help keep you closer to the surface at which less heat will build around the body. The cover is also breathable to aid in keeping cool. All this allows for the mattress to maintain an ideal temperature while sleeping.
Is The Puffy Mattress Right For You?
First and foremost, I’d say this mattress could make an excellent pick for side sleepers because the thick comfort layer works to relieve tension at the shoulders and hips.
Also note that the Puffy evokes a classic memory foam feel, so can be good for anyone with a penchant for the material. Soft Mattresses And Back Pain
And finally, this is one soft mattress, so could do wonders for anyone seeking a gentle, soothing mattress.
Though the memory foam is a big selling point of this mattress, it does make things a little uncomfortable for strict stomach sleepers who may find that it pushes their hips out of alignment with their shoulders.
Additionally, it contributes to a structure that does not have very much bounce, which could be a detractor for people in need of buoyant support.
Final Thoughts On The Puffy Mattress Soft Mattresses And Back Pain
The Puffy mattress is a great choice for all those who want to get all the advantages of a foam mattress without overpaying. The simple design makes it a classic. This mattress is covered in a removable cover that can be unzipped and washed when needed. The top is soft and pliable and fits well to the mattress. It even has a rather appropriate and aesthetically pleasing cloud pattern that actually adds to the appearance. The side panels are a dim grey durable fabric that compliment the mattress as well. Unlike the traditional foam mattresses, this one will stay cool and will cradle you fairly well and will provide decent pressure relief. Puffy is extremely sturdy and contains motion isolation which makes it appropriate for all different types of sleepers. Although, I’d like to state this mattress is an excellent pick for side sleepers because the thick relaxation layer works to relieve tension at the shoulders and hips.
