Helix Sleep markets hybrid mattresses made using polyfoam comfort systems, dual-layer covers, and pocketed coil support cores reinforced using polyfoam base layers. Should I Buy A Helix Mattress

Helix Sleep gives you full mattress customization. Buyers are urged to complete a questionnaire that asks for their weight, height, firmness preferences, sleep position, and other options. Then based on these answers, Helix Sleep will recommend one of the following six mattress options; each individual variant gives a one-of-a-kind combination of support and firmness:

  • Helix Sunset: ‘Soft’ firmness, targeted cushioning, and balanced support
  • Helix Moonlight: ‘Soft’ firmness, moderate cushioning, and extra support
  • Helix Midnight: ‘Medium’ firmness, targeted cushioning, and balanced support
  • Helix Dusk: ‘Medium’ firmness, moderate cushioning, and extra support
  • Helix Twilight: ‘Firm’ firmness, targeted cushioning, and balanced support
  • Helix Dawn: ‘Firm’ firmness, moderate cushioning, and extra support

Helix Sleep hybrids that have targeted cushioning conform closely, making them ideal for side sleepers. While mattresses with moderate cushioning do not conform as much and are suitable for all sleep positions. Lighter men and women may feel most comfortable on variants with balanced support, while individuals who weigh 130 pounds or more tend to prefer the variants with additional support.

Helix Sleep also markets two mattresses with dual-firmness, the Helix Dual Balanced (with targeted cushioning and balanced support) and the Helix Dual Extra (with additional support and moderate cushioning). Both these models have one ‘Soft’ side and one ‘Firm’ side, making them great for couples with differing tastes. Lastly, the Helix Nightfall is a hybrid developed for larger, heavier people. This mattress has an additional layer of memory foam for maximum support.

My review of Helix Sleep mattresses discovered that the customizable selection accommodates sleepers with a wide variety of body types and firmness preferences. The mattresses also offer strong edge support, isolate motion transfer nicely, and create less noise than the normal hybrid. Should I Buy A Helix Mattress

Construction Should I Buy A Helix Mattress

All 9 of the different iterations of the mattress will differ slightly in construction, but for 6 of the 9 models, the construction should be fairly similar. The 6 core models (listed above) are 10 inches tall, composed of 6 inches of individually wrapped coils and 4 inches of foam.

Helix mattresses differ in firmness and density depending upon the foams used in order to achieve more/less support and more/less firmness. The 4 unique foams utilized within Helix mattresses are memory foam, high-grade polyurethane foam, Helix Dynamic Foam, and a DuraDense Foam (aka support foam). Not all the variants have all of the foams – some only have three of the four – but it really shouldn’t matter much for the buyer. The foams are just levers that Helix Sleep can pull in order to offer 9 unique versions (and supposedly have a model for everybody). Should I Buy A Helix Mattress

Below, I briefly discuss the construction (materials and quality) of the typical Helix mattress, the Helix Midnight.

helix-midnight-construction

Cover – Originally, all Helix mattresses have exactly the same cover, made of 100 percent polyester. I thought it to be stretchy and thin, allowing for some nice breathability. But, if you want something more luxurious, you can choose to swap out the regular cover for the UltraCool one, which is composed of a phase change material to regulate heat.

Comfort Layer – Up top, you will encounter a heavy layer of memory foam. This material has a slow reaction to pressure, which means you are likely to encounter some great body contouring. Even though it may seem odd for a purportedly medium firmness mattress to make use of a memory foam comfort layer, it’s crucial to remember that the feeling of deep sinkage does not necessarily translate to softness; in fact, most of the time it gives quite a firm feeling.

Transition Layer – After getting past the comfort layer, you’ll find a transition layer of poly foam. This layer works to curb the sinkage of the comfort layer and create a supportive, medium firm feeling as you reach the individually wrapped coils underneath.

Support Layer – Most of the mattress consists of this segment of individually wrapped coils. This system gives a supportive lift to the structure, working to put the sleeper “on top” of the mattress, instead of “in it”. Since these coils are wrapped individually, they’re also likely to encourage extra breathability as air flows through the spaces in the coils.

Base Layer – Lastly, you’ll uncover a thin section of high-density poly foam. This segment does not affect the feel of the mattress too much, working mostly to provide the pocketed coils something off of which to react.

Firmness and Support

After having a peek at the construction of the Helix mattresses, let us talk about their varying feels and firmness levels.

helix-mattress-firmness-and-support-scale

The firmness of the Helix is going to differ widely depending on which version you pick out. The Helix Midnight and Dusk, have moderate firmness levels, which will be quite versatile and therefore best-selling. If you are more particular, however, Helix Sleep is happy to oblige you with more choices.

Lying down on the Midnight, the memory foam comfort layer feels soft and produces some quality body shaping, while the rest of the materials in the mattress work to counteract this and create an overall firmer composition. The individually-wrapped coils and the firmer support foams also help with re-positioning.

For those who sleep on their back, there’s enough good comfort material in the mattress to conform to your lumbar while supporting your back in a neutral position. For heavier buyers or people who prefer a firmer bed, there are two more options for you in the Helix Dawn and Helix Twilight variants.

Many side sleepers should feel totally comfy on the Midnight, however, if you are wanting less pressure while still going with a versatile medium firmness, you might want to check out the Helix Dusk, which utilizes a body-conforming latex-alternative foam that’s breathable and provides the surface a small bit of bounce.

Side sleepers typically have to be more mindful of pressure since they sleep with most of their weight on a tinier area. People who are smaller than average or people looking for plenty of pressure relief might want to stick to the plusher variants.

Stomach sleepers will feel supported in the Midnight, especially if this is not their primary position or they tend to change things up a lot. Firmer choices may be preferable for exclusive tummy sleepers so that they can ensure their hips don’t dip and over-arch their back.

Finally, Helix Sleep suggests Helix for sleepers up to 350 pounds or partners who weigh a maximum of 250 lbs each. If you or your spouse are significantly larger than average, the company has also produced a bed called the Nightfall that is built to accommodate a total weight of 1000 pounds.

Partners with different types of bodies or preferences can also select a dual comfort model that pairs Firm with Plush.

Keep in mind that if none of those models feel right, you could always check out the four other beds in the new collection: the Sunset (plush, softer than the Moonlight), Dusk (medium feel, a little firmer than the Midnight), Twilight (firm, made for side sleepers), or Dawn (the firmest option of the bunch).

Motion Transfer

Now, let’s talk about motion transfer, or the amount of disturbance that’s noticeable from 1 side of the mattress to the other. While this is going to be important for all sleepers, those who sleep with a partner may find it particularly intriguing as it will illuminate just how bothered you may be by your bed mate’s nighttime movements. Should I Buy A Helix Mattress

According to my research, Helix Sleep surpasses expectations for hybrid mattresses in this space because of the amount and quality of foam it contains, in addition to the pocketed coils which help keep motion at its source. If you’re a light sleeper concerned that movement from the other side of the bed will wake you, you shouldn’t have much concern with this mattress. I’d say that all of the Helix mattresses would be a good choice for couples.

Sinkage

While getting a brand-new mattress, most men and women wish to know whether they’ll feel as though they are sinking “into” the it or laying “on top” of it.

While you’re likely to experience some immediate sinkage from the uppermost foam layers, when you sink through those layers, you will hit the individually-wrapped coils and experience amazing support. This combo will appeal to a wide range of individuals, but will satisfy stomach and back sleepers the most.

Edge Support

Though I do feel the foam collapse as I sit near the edge of the Helix Midnight, the individually-wrapped coils stop the mattress from compressing too much . I feel very secured sitting on the bed.

In my opinion, Helix mattresses are well above average when it comes to edge support compared to other bed-in-a-box brands, which is because of their newly updated edges containing reinforcement in the coil system. There can be a little compression in the comfort foams when you sit with all your weight on the side, but laying on the side will feel comfy and secure. Partners who want more space to stretch out typically appreciate stronger edges.

Laying down, I feel like I can get near the edge of the mattress without feeling like I will fall off or be ejected from the mattress. Overall, I think that the Helix mattress has great edge support.

100 Night Sleep Trial

One of the best features of buying a mattress-in-a-box online is the sleep trials they usually come with. Helix Sleep is no different. You create the mattress that’s made for you, place your order, and in two weeks, it’s sent to your home. From the minute you click to buy the mattress, you have 100 nights to check it out (minus the time for delivery, so it’s more like 90 nights). If it is not what you wanted, you can return it free of charge, and get a full refund.

If you do return the mattress, it isn’t resold or restocked. Actually, the company locates a local place to donate it. If there’s no way Helix Sleep can find a way to donate your returned mattress, they have it recycled instead. Should I Buy A Helix Mattress

Helix Warranty

The Helix Mattress includes a generous 10-year warranty that covers flaws, but it comes with limitations, exceptions, while the burden of proof is on the consumer (like most guarantees ). Of course, you must be the original owner of the mattress to use the guarantee, and you need to be sure you save your receipt as proof of purchase.

Provided that you follow all the manufacturer’s expectations for use, your warranty will be valid. That means you will need to use a suitable foundation (no adjustable bed frames or slats over 4 inches apart) and that you don’t use the Helix improperly – no jumping on it!

If your mattress begins to have an indentation of 1″ or longer, something that generally happens when low-density foams break down, then you could be eligible for a replacement or repair of your Helix.

What’s The Best Way To Care For Your Helix?

Helix mattresses require no flipping, but it is suggested that you rotate the mattress possibly a couple of times a year to prevent it from wearing down from excessive sagging.

For regular cleaning, it is suggested to use cold water along gentle dish detergent to clean any dirt or stains. Be sure that you clean using soft circular movements, instead of rubbing.
