Construction Puffy Mattress Review

The Puffy is essentially a memory foam mattress that measures a total of 10 inches. It features a simple design with just two foam layers: one of thick memory foam and also another of high-density poly foam.

Here are the details as listed on their website:

10″ MATTRESS | 2 LAYERS

6.5 – 8.5 Medium-Firm Comfort

4″ Cooling Cloud FoamPuffy’s gel-infused foam increases airflow 8x more than conventional foam mattresses. Provides pressure relief and cooling system.

6″ Firm Core Support FoamOutstanding support and spinal alignment for restorative sleep.

Parts:

Cover – The cover fabric was pretty thin, which provides airflow throughout the mattress. It is made out of polyester, which makes for a soft and elastic material.

Comfort Layer – Comprised of 4″ of gel memory foam, the comfort layer here is soft and has a slow response to pressure, which means you are very likely to sink deep for some intense body contouring. While it’s typical for all-foam beds like this to incorporate a top section of memory foam, this layer in particular is very thick and should bring some satisfying relief to the shoulders and hips. Although memory foam has a bit of a reputation for overheating in the nighttime , Puffy has been able to mitigate this using a gel infusion meant to keep things cool and nice as you are sleeping.

Support Layer – Made up of 6″ of high-density poly foam, unlike the memory foam layer above it, this part has a fast response to pressure and can be very firm. The combination of materials was especially chosen to bring targeted relief to the spine. Puffy Mattress Review

Firmness

We found Puffy’s thick memory foam coating with a gentle, pressure-relieving feel. A lack of any sort of transition foam means that you’re likely to interact primarily with the high-density poly foam as you quickly sink through the memory foam comfort layer. Because of this, you’re likely to feel as though you’re sleeping more “in” this mattress than “on top” of it. Although, if you would like an even softer texture, you may want to check out the Puffy Lux, which has an additional layer of memory foam for an ultra-plush vibe.

Pressure Map

Another important factor to consider when purchasing a new mattress is where pressure points will form while lying on top of it.

To help you visualize where these tension spots could be, I placed a pressure map on top of the mattress and lied on my back, side, and stomach. You may see the outcomes on the image where pressure is represented from blue (low pressure) to red (high pressure).

Back – Laying on my back, I could really feel myself sinking into the mattress, together with the memory foam in the top layer working to contour to my own body and fill in the space at my lumbar region. While this led to some great pressure relief in this position, it did make it difficult to move around and shift positions.

Side – Rolling onto my side, I sensed a few pressure relief. I’m not overly surprised by this as side sleepers tend to go for softer mattresses that provide cushiony support to the shoulders and hips, typical problem areas for people who sleep in their sides.

Stomach – Though the thick memory foam comfort layer is a big win for side sleepers, it’s a bit of a mixed bag for stomach sleepers who generally opt for firmer structures that keep the spine in an even alignment. Here, I could feel my hips sinking out of line with my shoulders, which created some discomfort in this position.

Motion Transfer

Next up, let us take a peek at the Puffy’s motion transfer, or the level of disturbance detectable from one side of the mattress to another.

To illustrate this motion transfer, I dropped a 10lb. steel ball from heights of 4 inches, 8 inches and 12 inches and quantified the disturbance it generated: the bigger the lines, the larger the disturbance.

FYI: Every drop is intended to symbolize another movement you are likely to experience in bed, from tossing and turning (4″) to getting out of bed (8″) all the way to full on jumping (12″).

Puffy-Motion-Transfer

These are actually quite intriguing motion transfer outcomes. You’ll see a small spike in first movement across the drops that quickly dissipates, which I would attribute to the thick memory foam comfort layer. This material is great at absorbing and dampening motion, which makes it so you are unlikely to be overly disturbed by your partner’s turning and tossing in the evening.

Sinkage Test

When buying a new mattress}, most people wish to know whether they’ll feel like they’re sinking “into” the mattress or laying “on top” of it. To visualize this sinkage, I placed four balls of varying sizes and densities on the mattress and quantified how much they compressed the surface.

Puffy-Sinkage

6 lb medicine ball: 1.5 inches of sinkage.
10 lb steel ball: 2.5 inches of sinkage.
50 lb medicine ball: 4.5 inches of sinkage.
100 lb medicine ball: 7 inches of sinkage.

What this tells me is that you are very likely to sink in deeply through the foam layers within this mattress, resulting in a stuck-in-the-bed type feel that’ll make it a bit difficult to change positionsPuffy Mattress Review

Edge Support

The edge support on the Puffy mattress will feel stable and create a sound, edge to edge usable sleep surface. The dense base foam paired with the supportive memory foam should create a very strong perimeter. Sleeping on this mattress you are able to sense a consistent feel across the whole surface without having a “rolling out of the bed” feel. So far as sitting on the edge goes, you will feel some support.

101 Night Sleep Trial and Guarantee

The Puffy mattress includes a 101 night sleep trial period. This trial period allows for more than enough time to try this mattress out. Giving you and your body about three months to adjust to the new and improved feel of your memory foam mattress. It’s a good idea to note that you should take advantage of really testing this mattress in this time period. Anytime you buy a brand new mattress your body needs several weeks to months to completely adjust. If for some reason you reach the end of your trial period and it’s not a good fit, Puffy will easily work together with you to return and refund your purchase.

This mattress comes with a lifetime warranty which goes above and beyond what the typical warranty for the mattress industry is. This guarantee shows that Puffy actually backs their product. Covering any abnormal defects or manufacturing mistakes. Minus the typical wear and tear of a mattress. This provides consumers with the assurance that this can be a mattress that the company will stand behind.

Puffy Mattress Sleep Temperature?

The Puffy mattress incorporates cooling technology in each material of this mattress. The top layer of memory foam is a patent-pending cooling cloud foam which uses convection and conduction to release heat and keep it away from the body. It’s also infused with gel that increases the airflow 8x more than standard foam mattresses.

The base foam is compact and supportive to create a solid base that won’t allow you to sink into the mattress and keep you closer to the surface where less heat will build around the body. The cover is also breathable to help in keeping cool. All this allows for the mattress to maintain an ideal temperature while sleeping.

Is The Puffy Mattress Right For You?

PROS

First and foremost, I’d say this mattress could make an excellent pick for side sleepers as the thick comfort layer works to relieve tension at the shoulders and hips.

Also note that the Puffy evokes a classic memory foam feel, so can be good for anyone with a penchant for the material. Puffy Mattress Review

And lastly, this is one soft mattress, so could do wonders for anybody in search of a gentle, calming mattress.

CONS

While the memory foam is a big selling point of this mattress, it does make things a little uncomfortable for strict stomach sleepers who might find that it sends their hips out of alignment with their shoulders.

Additionally, it contributes to a structure that doesn’t have very much bounce, which could be a detractor for those needing buoyant support.

Final Thoughts On The Puffy Mattress Puffy Mattress Review

The Puffy mattress is a great choice for everyone who want to get all the benefits of a foam mattress without overpaying. The simple design makes it a classic. This mattress is covered in a removable cover that can be unzipped and washed when needed. The top is soft and pliable and fits nicely to the mattress. It has a very suitable and aesthetically pleasing cloud pattern that actually adds to the look. The side panels are a dark grey durable cloth that compliment the mattress too. Puffy Mattress Review

Unlike the conventional foam mattresses, this one will stay cool and will cradle you fairly well and will provide good pressure relief. Puffy is extremely sturdy and includes motion isolation which makes it appropriate for many different kinds of sleepers. Although, I’d like to say this mattress is an excellent pick for side sleepers as the thick relaxation layer works to relieve tension at the shoulders and hips. In addition, the mattress provides proper body support and is a fantastic choice for all people who suffer from back pain or joint pain. Puffy Mattress Review
