Helix Sleep sells hybrid mattresses manufactured with dual-layer covers, polyfoam comfort systems, and pocketed coil support cores reinforced with polyfoam base layers. Moving Bed Filter Helix

Helix Sleep gives you full mattress customization. Purchasers are asked to fill out a survey that asks for their weight, height, firmness preferences, sleep position, and other factors. Based on these answers, Helix Sleep will suggest one of the following 6 mattress variants; each respective variant offers a unique combination of firmness and support:

  • Helix Sunset: ‘Soft’ firmness, targeted cushioning, and balanced support
  • Helix Moonlight: ‘Soft’ firmness, moderate cushioning, and extra support
  • Helix Midnight: ‘Medium’ firmness, targeted cushioning, and balanced support
  • Helix Dusk: ‘Medium’ firmness, moderate cushioning, and extra support
  • Helix Twilight: ‘Firm’ firmness, targeted cushioning, and balanced support
  • Helix Dawn: ‘Firm’ firmness, moderate cushioning, and extra support

Helix Sleep mattresses that have targeted cushioning conform closely, making them optimal for those who sleep on their side. While mattresses with moderate cushioning do not conform as much and are great for pretty much all sleep positions. Lighter individuals may feel most comfy on variants with balanced support, while individuals who weigh 130 pounds or more often favor the models with extra support.

Helix Sleep also markets two variants with dual-firmness, the Helix Dual Balanced (with targeted cushioning and balanced support) and the Helix Dual Extra (with moderate cushioning and extra support). Both these variants have one ‘Firm’ side and one ‘Soft’ side, which makes them ideal for couples with differing tastes. Lastly, the Helix Nightfall is a hybrid developed for bigger, heavier people. This mattress has an additional layer of memory foam for optimum support.

My review of Helix Sleep mattresses discovered that the customizable selection accommodates sleepers with a large range of firmness preferences and body types. The mattresses also have strong edge support, isolate motion transfer well, and create less noise than the normal hybrid. Moving Bed Filter Helix

Construction Moving Bed Filter Helix

All 9 of the different iterations of this mattress will differ slightly in construction, but for 6 of the 9 models, the construction should be rather similar. The six core variants (listed above) are 10 inches tall, composed of 6 inches of pocketed coils and 4 inches of foam.

Helix mattresses differ in density and firmness based upon the foams utilized in order to achieve more/less support and more/less firmness. The 4 different foams used within Helix mattresses are memory foam, high-grade polyurethane foam, Helix Dynamic Foam, and a DuraDense Foam (aka support foam). Not all the mattresses have all of the foams – some just have three of the four – but it really won’t matter much for the purchaser. The foams are just levers that Helix Sleep can pull in order to offer nine unique models (and hopefully have a model for everyone). Moving Bed Filter Helix

Underneath, I quickly discuss the construction (materials and quality) of the average Helix mattress, the Helix Midnight.

Cover – Originally, all Helix mattresses come with the same cover, made of 100% polyester. I found it to be thin and stretchy, allowing for some wonderful breathability. However, if you would like something more amped up, you can elect to swap out the standard cover for the brand’s UltraCool one, which is composed of a phase-change material to regulate heat.

Comfort Layer – On top, you’ll find a heavy layer of memory foam. This type of foam has a slow reaction to pressure, meaning you’re likely to experience some gratifying body contouring. Even though it may seem strange for a purportedly medium firmness bed to feature a memory foam layer, it is crucial to remember that the existence of deep sinkage doesn’t always translate to softness; in fact, most of the time it produces quite a firm feeling.

Transition Layer – After getting past the comfort layer, you’ll find a transition layer of poly foam. This layer works to curb the sinkage of the comfort layer and create a supportive, medium firm feel as you hit the individually wrapped coils below.

Support Layer – The majority of the mattress consists of this section of individually wrapped coils. This system brings a supportive lift to the construction, working to place the sleeper “on top” of the mattress, instead of “in it”. Since the coils are individually wrapped, they’re also likely to give extra breathability as air flows through the spaces in the coils.

Base Layer – Lastly, you’ll find a thin segment of high-density poly foam. This layer does not really affect the feel of the mattress too much, working mostly to give the pocketed coils something off of which to react.

Firmness and Support

After taking a look at the construction of the Helix mattresses, let us talk about their varying feels and firmness levels.

helix-mattress-firmness-and-support-scale

The firmness of the Helix will differ widely depending on which variant you pick out. The Helix Dusk and Midnight, have moderate firmness levels, which tends to be very versatile and thus very popular. If you are more particular, however, Helix Sleep would be happy to oblige you with additional options.

Lying down on the Midnight, the memory foam layer is soft and produces some quality body contouring, while the other materials within the mattress work to control this and make an overall firmer composition. The individually-wrapped coils and the firmer support foams also assist with re-positioning.

For those who sleep on their back, there’s just enough good comfort material in the mattress to conform to your lower spine while supporting your whole back in a neutral position. For heavier buyers or people who prefer a firmer bed, there are 2 more choices for you in the Helix Twilight and Helix Dawn variants.

Most side sleepers should feel totally comfy on the Midnight, however, if you are needing less pressure while still going with a flexible medium firmness, you might decide to take a look at the Helix Dusk, which utilizes a body-conforming latex-alternative foam that is breathable and gives the surface a small bit of bounce.

Side sleepers typically need to be more mindful of pressure because they sleep with all their weight on a tinier area. Those who are smaller than average or people in the market for lots of pressure relief may want to stay with the plusher variants.

Those who sleep on their stomach will feel comfortable in the Midnight, especially if this isn’t their main position or they have a tendency to change things up a lot. Firmer choices might be preferable for exclusive tummy sleepers so they can make sure their hips do not dip and over-arch their backbone.

Lastly, the manufacturer suggests Helix mattresses for sleepers up to 350 pounds or partners who weigh up to 250 pounds each. If you or your partner are significantly bigger than average, the company has also produced a bed called the Nightfall that is constructed to accommodate a combined weight of 1000 pounds.

Partners with differing body types or preferences may also pick a dual comfort variant that combines Firm with Plush.

Bear in mind that if neither of these options feel right, you could always have a look at the four other variants in the new collection: the Sunset (plush, softer compared to the Moonlight), Dusk (moderate feel, a little firmer compared to the Midnight), Twilight (firm, designed for side sleepers), or Dawn (the firmest variant of the bunch).

Motion Transfer

Next up, let’s chat about motion transfer, or the amount of disturbance that’s detectable from one side of the mattress to the other. While this will be crucial for all buyers, those who doze with a partner may find it particularly interesting as it will illuminate just how bothered you’ll be by your partner’s nighttime movements. Moving Bed Filter Helix

Based on my observation, Helix Sleep exceeds expectations for hybrids in this space due to the amount and quality of foam it contains, in addition to the pocketed coils that help trap motion at its source. If you’re a light sleeper afraid that movement from the opposite side of the bed will wake you, then you should not have a lot of concern with this hybrid. I would say that any of the Helix mattresses would be a good option for couples.

Sinkage

When getting a new mattress, most individuals would like to know whether they will feel as though they’re sinking “into” the it or laying “on top” of it.

Even though you may experience a little immediate sinkage from the uppermost foam layers, when you sink through these layers, you will hit the pocketed coils and experience amazing support. This combo will appeal to a wide range of sleepers, but will satisfy stomach and back sleepers in particular.

Edge Support

While I do feel the foam collapse as I sit close to the edge of the bed, the coils stop the mattress from collapsing too much beyond that. I feel very secured seated on the mattress.

In my opinion, Helix mattresses are well above average for edge support in comparison to other bed-in-a-box brands, and this is due to their freshly updated edges that contain reinforcement in the coil system. There may be a little compression in the comfort foams when you sit with all your weight on the side, but laying on the side will feel comfortable and secure. Couples who want more space to stretch out typically appreciate stronger edges.

Lying down, I feel like I could get close to the edge of the mattress without feeling like I’ll roll off or be ejected from the bed. Overall, I think the Helix has great edge support.

100 Night Sleep Trial

One of the best features of purchasing a mattress-in-a-box online is the sleep trials that they usually come with. Helix Sleep is no different. You create the mattress that’s meant for you, place your order, and in two weeks, it is delivered to your home. From the moment you click to buy the mattress, you’ve got 100 nights to try it out (minus the time for delivery, so it’s more like 90 nights). If it is not what you wanted, you can return it for free of charge, and get a full refund.

If you do return the mattress, it isn’t resold or restocked. Actually, Helix Sleep finds a local place to donate it. When there is no way Helix Sleep can find a way to donate your refunded mattress, they have it recycled instead. Moving Bed Filter Helix

Helix Warranty

Helix Sleep offers a generous 10-year warranty that covers defects, but it comes with limitations, exceptions, while the burden of proof is on the consumer (like most guarantees ). Of course, you must be the original owner of the Helix to use the warranty, and you need to be sure you save your receipt as proof of purchase.

As long as you follow all of the manufacturer’s expectations for use, your warranty is valid. That means you will need to have a proper foundation (no adjustable bed frames or slats more than 4″ apart) and you don’t use the mattress improperly – no jumping on it!

If your mattress starts to show an indentation of 1″ or more, which is what usually happens when low-density foams break down, you could qualify for a repair or replacement of your mattress.

What’s The Best Way To Care For Your Helix?

Helix mattresses require no turning, but it’s suggested that you rotate the mattress perhaps once or twice a year to prevent it from wearing down from excess sagging.

For regular cleanup, it is suggested to use cold water along gentle dish soap to clean any dirt or stains. Make sure to wash using soft circular motions, rather than rubbing.
