Construction Mattress Too Soft Or Too Hard

The Puffy is basically a memory foam mattress that measures a total of 10 inches. It has a simple design with just 2 foam layers: one of thick memory foam and another of high-density poly foam.

Here are the details as listed on their website:

10″ MATTRESS | 2 LAYERS

6.5 – 8.5 Medium-Firm Comfort

4″ Cooling Cloud FoamPuffy’s gel-infused foam improves airflow 8x more than conventional foam mattresses. Provides pressure relief and cooling.

6″ Firm Core Support FoamOutstanding support and spinal alignment for restorative sleep.

Components:

Cover – The cover fabric was quite thin, which encourages airflow throughout the mattress. It is made from polyester, which makes for a soft and elastic material.

Comfort Layer – Made up of 4″ of gel memory foam, the comfort layer here is soft and has a very slow response to pressure, which usually means you’re very likely to sink deep for some intense body contouring. While it’s normal for all-foam beds like this to incorporate a top section of memory foam, this layer particularly is incredibly thick and should bring some satisfying relief to the hips and shoulders. Although memory foam has a reputation for overheating in the night, Puffy has been able to mitigate this with a gel infusion meant to keep things cool and nice as you sleep.

Support Layer – Composed of 6″ of high-density poly foam, unlike the memory foam layer over it, this section has a fast response to pressure and can be very firm. The combination of materials was specifically selected to deliver targeted relief to the spine. Mattress Too Soft Or Too Hard

Firmness

We found Puffy’s thick memory foam layer with a gentle, pressure-relieving texture. A lack of any sort of transition foam implies that you’re very likely to interact mainly with the high-density poly foam as you quickly sink through the memory foam comfort layer. Because of this, you are likely to feel as though you’re sleeping more “in” this mattress than “on top” of it. Although, if you would like an even softer feel, you might want to check out the Puffy Lux, which comes with an additional layer of memory foam for an ultra-plush vibe.

Pressure Map

One other important factor to consider when buying a new mattress is where pressure points are going to form while lying on top of it.

To help you picture where these tension spots might be, I put a pressure map over the mattress and lied on my back, side, and stomach. You may see the results on the chart where pressure is represented from blue (low pressure) to red (high pressure).

Back – Laying on my back, I could really feel myself sinking into the mattress, with the memory foam in the top layer working to contour to my body and fill in the space at my lumbar region. While this led to some great pressure relief in this position, it did make it difficult to move around and shift positions.

Side – Rolling on my side, I felt some pressure relief. I am not too surprised with this as side sleepers tend to go for softer mattresses which offer cushiony support to the shoulders and hips, typical problem areas for those who sleep on their sides.

Stomach – Though the thick memory foam comfort layer is a huge benefit for side sleepers, it is a bit of a mixed bag for stomach sleepers who generally opt for firmer mattresses that keep the spine in an even alignment. Here, I could feel my hips sinking out of line with my shoulders, which caused some discomfort in this position.

Motion Transfer

Now, let us take a peek at the Puffy’s motion transfer, or the level of disturbance detectable from one side of the mattress to the other.

To demonstrate this motion transfer, I dropped a 10lb. steel ball from heights of 4 inches, 8 inches and 12 inches and then measured the disturbance it caused: the larger the lines, the bigger the disturbance.

FYI: Each drop is intended to signify another movement you’re most likely to experience in bed, from tossing and turning (4″) to getting out of bed (8″) all the way to full on jumping (12″).

Puffy-Motion-Transfer

These are really quite intriguing motion transfer results. You’ll notice a small spike in initial movement across the drops that quickly dissipates, which I would attribute to the thick memory foam comfort layer. This material is great at absorbing and dampening motion, making it so you’re unlikely to be overly bothered by your partner’s tossing and turning in the evening.

Sinkage Test

When purchasing a new mattress}, most people wish to know whether they will feel as though they’re sinking “into” the mattress or laying “on top” of it. To visualize this sinkage, I placed four balls of varying sizes and densities on the mattress and quantified how much they compressed the surface.

Puffy-Sinkage

6 lb medicine ball: 1.5 inches of sinkage.
10 lb steel ball: 2.5 inches of sinkage.
50 lb medicine ball: 4.5 inches of sinkage.
100 lb medicine ball: 7 inches of sinkage.

This tells me is that you are likely to sink deeply through the foam layers in this mattress, resulting in a stuck-in-the-bed type feel that will make it a bit tricky to change positionsMattress Too Soft Or Too Hard

Edge Support

The edge support on the Puffy mattress will feel stable and make a sound, edge to edge usable sleep surface. The dense base foam coupled with the supportive memory foam should create a very strong perimeter. Sleeping on this mattress you are able to feel a consistent feel across the entire surface without having a “rolling out of the bed” feel. So far as sitting on the edge goes, you will feel some support.

101 Night Sleep Trial and Guarantee

The Puffy mattress includes a 101 night sleep trial period. This trial period should give you more than enough time to try this bed out. Giving you and your body about three months to adjust to the new and improved feel of your memory foam mattress. It’s good to be aware that you need to make the most of really testing this mattress in this time period. Anytime you buy a brand new mattress your body needs a few weeks to months to fully adjust. If for any reason you get to the end of your trial period and it’s not a good fit, Puffy will easily work together with you to return and refund your purchase.

This mattress comes with a lifetime warranty which goes above and beyond what the standard warranty for the mattress industry is. This guarantee shows that Puffy actually backs their product. Covering any abnormal flaws or manufacturing mistakes. Minus the average wear and tear of a mattress. This provides consumers with the confidence that this is a mattress that the business will stand behind.

Puffy Mattress Sleep Temperature?

The Puffy mattress incorporates cooling technology in each material of this mattress. The top layer of memory foam is a patent-pending cooling cloud foam which uses convection and conduction to release heat and keep it away from the body. It’s also infused with gel that increases the airflow 8x more than conventional foam mattresses.

The base foam is compact and supportive to create a solid base that won’t let you sink into the mattress and also keep you closer to the surface where less heat will build around the body. The cover is also breathable to help in keeping cool. All this allows for the mattress to maintain an ideal temperature whilst sleeping.

Is The Puffy Mattress Right For You?

PROS

First of all, I would say this mattress could make an excellent pick for side sleepers as the thick comfort layer works to alleviate tension at the shoulders and hips.

Also note that the Puffy evokes a classic memory foam texture, so could be good for anybody with a penchant for the material. Mattress Too Soft Or Too Hard

And finally, this is one soft mattress, so can do wonders for anyone in search of a gentle, calming mattress.

CONS

Though the memory foam is a significant selling point of the mattress, it does make things a little uncomfortable for strict stomach sleepers who might discover that it pushes their hips out of alignment with their shoulders.

It also contributes to a structure that doesn’t have very much bounce, which might be a detractor for people needing buoyant support.

Unlike the conventional foam mattresses, this one will stay cool and will cradle you fairly well and will provide decent pressure relief. Puffy is very sturdy and contains motion isolation which makes it appropriate for many different kinds of sleepers. Although, I’d like to say this mattress is an excellent choice for side sleepers as the thick comfort layer works to alleviate strain in the shoulders and hips.
