Helix Sleep offers hybrid mattresses made using dual-layer covers, polyfoam comfort systems, and pocketed coil support cores enhanced with polyfoam base layers. Is Helix Worth It

Helix Sleep gives you complete mattress customization. Buyers are requested to fill out a survey that asks for their weight, height, sleep position, firmness preferences, and other factors. Then based on these answers, Helix Sleep will recommend one of the following 6 mattress options; each respective variant provides a one-of-a-kind combination of firmness and support:

  • Helix Sunset: ‘Soft’ firmness, targeted cushioning, and balanced support
  • Helix Moonlight: ‘Soft’ firmness, moderate cushioning, and extra support
  • Helix Midnight: ‘Medium’ firmness, targeted cushioning, and balanced support
  • Helix Dusk: ‘Medium’ firmness, moderate cushioning, and additional support
  • Helix Twilight: ‘Firm’ firmness, targeted cushioning, and balanced support
  • Helix Dawn: ‘Firm’ firmness, moderate cushioning, and extra support

Is Helix Worth It

Helix Sleep hybrids with targeted cushioning conform closely, making them ideal for side sleepers. While mattresses with moderate cushioning do not conform as much and are great for all sleep positions. Lighter people may feel most comfy on variants with balanced support, while people that weigh 130 lbs or more often favor the models with additional support.

Helix Sleep also offers two mattresses with dual-firmness, the Helix Dual Balanced (with targeted cushioning and balanced support) and the Helix Dual Extra (with additional support and moderate cushioning). Both these models have one ‘Firm’ side and one ‘Soft’ side, which makes them suitable for couples with differing preferences. Lastly, the Helix Nightfall is a hybrid designed for larger, heavier individuals. This model has an additional layer of memory foam for optimum support.

My review of Helix Sleep mattresses found that the customizable selection accommodates sleepers with a large variety of body types and firmness preferences. The mattresses also have strong edge support, isolate motion transfer nicely, and produce less noise than the average hybrid. Is Helix Worth It

Construction Is Helix Worth It

All nine of the different iterations of the mattress will differ slightly in construction, but for 6 of the 9 models, the construction will be fairly similar. The 6 core models (listed above) are 10 inches tall, composed of 6 inches of pocketed coils and 4 inches of foam.

Helix mattresses vary in density and firmness based on the foams utilized in order to get more/less firmness and more/less support. The four different foams used within Helix mattresses are high-grade polyurethane foam, memory foam, Helix Dynamic Foam, and a DuraDense Foam (aka support foam). Not all of the mattresses have all the foams – some just have three of the four – but it really won’t matter much for the buyer. The foams are just levers that Helix Sleep can pull to be able to offer 9 distinct mattresses (and hopefully have a mattress for everyone). Is Helix Worth It

Below, I briefly talk about the construction (materials and quality) of your average Helix mattress, the Helix Midnight.

helix-midnight-construction

Cover – Originally, all Helix mattresses come with exactly the same cover, made of 100 percent polyester. I found it to be pliable and thin, allowing for some nice breathability. But, if you want something more amped up, you can choose to swap out the regular cover for the UltraCool one, which is made up of a phase change material for temperature regulation.

Comfort Layer – On top, you will discover a thick layer of memory foam. This material has a slow response to pressure, meaning you are probably going to experience some great body shaping. Even though it may seem strange for a purportedly medium firm bed to feature a memory foam layer, it is crucial to remember that the feeling of deep sinkage does not necessarily translate to softness; in fact, oftentimes it generates quite a firm feeling.

Transition Layer – After sinking through the comfort layer, you’ll find a transition layer of poly foam. This layer works to suppress the sinkage of the comfort layer and establish a supportive, medium firm feeling as you reach the individually wrapped coils underneath.

Support Layer – Most of the mattress consists of this segment of individually wrapped coils. This system brings a supportive lift into the structure, working to place the sleeper “on top” of the bed, instead of “in it”. Because these coils are wrapped individually, they are also likely to encourage extra breathability as air flows in between the spaces in the coils.

Base Layer – Lastly, you will find a thin section of high-density poly foam. This segment doesn’t really affect the feel of the bed too much, working mostly to give the individually wrapped coils something off of which to respond.

Firmness and Support

After taking a peek at the construction of the Helix mattresses, let us chat about their different feels and firmness levels.

helix-mattress-firmness-and-support-scale

The firmness of the Helix will vary widely depending on which variant you choose. The Helix Dusk and Midnight, have medium firmness levels, which tends to be quite versatile and thus best-selling. If you are more particular, however, Helix Sleep will be happy to provide you with more choices.

Laying down on the Midnight, the uppermost foam comfort layer is soft and generates some high quality body shaping, while the rest of the materials in the Midnight work to control this and make an overall firmer structure. The pocketed coils and the firmer support foams also assist with re-positioning.

For back sleepers, there’s enough good comfort material here to conform to your lower spine while supporting your whole back in a neutral position. For heavier sleepers or those who prefer a firmer bed, there are two more choices for you in the Helix Twilight and Helix Dawn models.

Majority of side sleepers should feel totally comfy on the Midnight, but, if you’re needing less pressure while still going with a flexible medium firmness, you may want to take a look at the Helix Dusk, which uses a body-conforming latex-alternative foam that’s breathable and provides the surface a little bit of bounce.

Those who sleep on their side typically have to be mindful of pressure because they sleep with most their weight on a smaller area. People who are lighter than average or those in the market for plenty of pressure relief might want to stick to the plusher variants.

Those who sleep on their stomach should feel comfortable in the Midnight, particularly if this is not their primary position or they tend to switch things up a lot. Firmer mattresses may be preferable for exclusive tummy sleepers so they can ensure their hips do not dip and over-arch their back.

Last, Helix Sleep recommends Helix mattresses for sleepers up to 350 pounds or couples that weigh a maximum of 250 lbs each. If you or your spouse are significantly bigger than average, Helix has also created a mattress called the Nightfall that’s built to accommodate a total weight of 1000 lbs.

Partners with differing types of bodies or tastes can also select a dual comfort model that combines Firm with Plush.

Bear in mind that if none of those models feel right, you could always check out the 4 other variants in the new collection: the Sunset (plush, softer than the Moonlight), Dusk (medium feel, a little firmer compared to the Midnight), Twilight (firm, made for side sleepers), or Dawn (the firmest variant of the bunch).

Motion Transfer

Now, let us chat about motion transfer, or the amount of activity that’s detectable from one side of the mattress to the other. While this will be significant for many sleepers, those who doze with a partner may find it particularly intriguing as it’ll illuminate just how bothered you’ll be by your bed mate’s nighttime movements. Is Helix Worth It

Based on my observation, Helix Sleep surpasses expectations for hybrids in this space because of the amount and quality of foam it contains, in addition to the individually wrapped coils that help keep motion at its source. If you are a light sleeper concerned that motion from the other side of the bed will bother you, then you shouldn’t have a lot of concern with this hybrid. I would say that any of the Helix mattresses would be a good option for couples.

Sinkage

While getting a new mattress, most people want to know whether they’ll feel as though they are sinking “into” the mattress or lying “on top” of it.

While you may encounter some immediate sinkage in the uppermost foam layers, by the time you sink through those layers, you are going to reach the individually-wrapped coils and experience great support. This combo will appeal to a vast range of individuals, but will suit stomach and back sleepers in particular.

Edge Support

Though I do feel the memory foam collapse as I sit close to the edge of the Helix Midnight, the individually-wrapped coils stop the mattress from compressing too much . I feel quite secured seated on the bed.

In my opinion, Helix mattresses are well above average when it comes to edge support compared to other bed-in-a-box brands, and this is because of their freshly updated edges containing reinforcement in the coil unit. There can be a little compression in the comfort foams when you sit with your entire weight on the side, but laying on the side should feel comfortable and secure. Couples who want more space to stretch out typically appreciate strong edges.

Lying down, I feel like I can get near the edge of the mattress without feeling like I will fall off or be pushed off the bed. Overall, I think the Helix mattress has great edge support.

100 Night Sleep Trial

Among the best features of buying a mattress-in-a-box online is the sleep trials they usually come with. Helix is not any different. You create the mattress that’s made for you, place your order, and in two weeks, it is delivered to your door. From the moment you click to buy the mattress, you’ve got 100 nights to test it out (minus the time for delivery, so it is more like 90 nights). If it is not ideal, you can return it free of charge, and get a complete refund.

Should you return the mattress, it is not resold or restocked. Actually, Helix Sleep does its best to find a local place to donate it. When there’s no way Helix can find a way to donate your refunded mattress, it’s recycled instead. Is Helix Worth It

Helix Warranty

Helix offers a generous 10-year warranty that covers flaws, but it comes with limitations, exceptions, plus the burden of proof is on the consumer (like most guarantees ). Needless to say, you should be the first owner of the mattress to make use of the warranty, and you will need to be sure you keep your receipt as proof of purchase.

Provided that you follow all the manufacturer’s expectations for use, your warranty is valid. That means you will need to have a proper base (no adjustable bed frames or slats over 4″ apart) and that you don’t use the Helix improperly – no jumping on the bed!

If your mattress starts to have an indentation of 1 inch or more, something that usually happens when low-density foams break down, you could be eligible for a replacement or repair of your mattress.

What’s The Best Way To Care For Your Helix?

Helix mattresses need no turning, but it’s suggested that you rotate the mattress perhaps once or twice a year to prevent it from wearing down from excessive sagging.

For regular cleanup, it’s advised to use cold water with gentle dish detergent to clean any stains or dirt. Make sure that you clean using soft circular motions, rather than rubbing.
