Helix Sleep sells hybrid mattresses made with polyfoam comfort systems, dual-layer covers, and pocketed coil support cores reinforced using polyfoam base layers. Hilux Sleep Mattress

Helix Sleep gives you full mattress customization. Customers are asked to fill out a survey that asks for their height, weight, firmness preferences, sleep position, and other options. Based on these answers, Helix Sleep will recommend one of the following six mattress variants; each respective variant gives a one-of-a-kind combination of support and firmness:

  • Helix Sunset: ‘Soft’ firmness, targeted cushioning, and balanced support
  • Helix Moonlight: ‘Soft’ firmness, moderate cushioning, and additional support
  • Helix Midnight: ‘Medium’ firmness, targeted cushioning, and balanced support
  • Helix Dusk: ‘Medium’ firmness, moderate cushioning, and extra support
  • Helix Twilight: ‘Firm’ firmness, targeted cushioning, and balanced support
  • Helix Dawn: ‘Firm’ firmness, moderate cushioning, and extra support

Hilux Sleep Mattress

Helix Sleep mattresses that have targeted cushioning conform closely, making them optimal for side sleepers. While those that have moderate cushioning don’t conform as much and are ideal for all sleep positions. Lighter men and women may feel most comfy on models with balanced support, while those who weigh 130 lbs or more tend to favor the models with extra support.

Helix Sleep also offers 2 variants with dual-firmness, the Helix Dual Balanced (with balanced support and targeted cushioning) and the Helix Dual Extra (with additional support and moderate cushioning). Both these models have one ‘Soft’ side and one ‘Firm’ side, which makes them suitable for couples with different tastes. Last, the Helix Nightfall is a hybrid designed for larger, heavier people. This model has an extra layer of memory foam for maximum support.

My review of Helix Sleep mattresses found that the customizable aspect accommodates sleepers with a wide range of firmness preferences and body types. The mattresses also provide strong edge support, isolate movement well, and create less noise than the average hybrid. Hilux Sleep Mattress

Construction Hilux Sleep Mattress

All nine of the different iterations of the mattress will differ slightly in construction, but for 6 of the 9 variants, the construction will be rather similar. The six core models (listed above) are 10 inches tall, made up of 6 inches of individually wrapped coils and 4 inches of foam.

Helix mattresses differ in firmness and density depending on the foams used in order to achieve more/less support and more/less firmness. The 4 different foams used within Helix mattresses are memory foam, high-grade polyurethane foam, Helix Dynamic Foam, and a DuraDense Foam (aka support foam). Not all the mattresses have all the foams – some just have 3 of the 4 – but it really shouldn’t matter much for the consumer. The foams are just levers that Helix Sleep can pull in order to offer nine different versions (and hopefully have a model for everybody). Hilux Sleep Mattress

Underneath, I concisely discuss the construction (materials and quality) of your typical Helix mattress, the Helix Midnight.

helix-midnight-construction

Cover – Originally, all Helix mattresses have the same cover, made of 100 percent polyester. I found it to be thin and stretchy, allowing for some nice breathability. However, if you prefer something more luxurious, you can opt to swap out the standard cover for the UltraCool one, which is composed of a phase-change material for temperature regulation.

Comfort Layer – Up top, you’ll encounter a thick layer of memory foam. This type of foam has a slow reaction to pressure, which means you are likely to encounter some great body shaping. Even though it may seem strange for a supposedly medium firm mattress to incorporate a memory foam layer, it’s important to remember that the presence of deep sinkage does not necessarily translate to softness; in actuality, most of the time it generates quite a firm feel.

Transition Layer – After sinking through the memory foam comfort layer, you’ll discover a transition layer of poly foam. This layer works to curb the sinkage of the memory foam and create a supportive, medium firm feel as you hit the pocketed coils underneath.

Support Layer – Most of the mattress consists of this section of individually wrapped coils. This system gives a supportive lift into the structure, working to position the sleeper “on top” of the mattress, instead of “in it”. Since the coils are wrapped individually, they are also likely to encourage extra breathability as air flows through the spaces in the coils.

Base Layer – Last but not least, you will find a thin segment of high-density poly foam. This layer doesn’t affect the feel of the mattress too much, functioning mostly to give the pocketed coils something off of which to respond.

Firmness and Support

After having a peek at the construction of the Helix mattresses, let us talk about their different feels and firmness levels.

helix-mattress-firmness-and-support-scale

The firmness level of the Helix is going to vary widely depending on which model you select. The Helix Midnight and Dusk, have moderate firmness levels, which tends to be very versatile and therefore very popular. If you have more specific needs, however, Helix Sleep is happy to provide you with additional choices.

Laying down on the Helix Midnight, the uppermost foam layer feels soft and produces some top quality body shaping, while the other materials in the mattress work to counteract this and create an overall firmer composition. The firmer support foams and individually-wrapped coils also help with re-positioning.

For back sleepers, there is enough good comfort material in the Midnight to conform to your lumbar while supporting your upper spine in a neutral position. For heavier sleepers or those who prefer a firmer mattress, there are 2 more choices for you in the Helix Twilight and Helix Dawn variants.

Many side sleepers will feel totally comfortable on the Midnight, however, if you’re wanting a bit less pressure while still sticking with a flexible medium firmness, you may want to take a look at the Helix Dusk, which uses a body-conforming latex-alternative foam that is breathable and gives the surface a little bit of bounce.

Side sleepers typically need to be more mindful of pressure because they sleep with all their weight on a smaller area. People who are lighter than average or people looking for a lot of pressure relief might want to stick to the plusher models.

Stomach sleepers should feel supported in the Midnight, especially if this isn’t their main position or they have a tendency to switch things up a lot. Firmer choices may be preferable for exclusive tummy sleepers so they can make sure their hips do not dip and over-arch their backbone.

Finally, Helix Sleep recommends Helix for sleepers around 350 pounds or partners that weigh up to 250 lbs each. If you or your partner are significantly larger than average, the company has also created a mattress called the Nightfall that’s made to accommodate a combined weight of 1000 lbs.

Couples with differing types of bodies or tastes can also pick a dual comfort variant that pairs Firm with Plush.

Keep in mind that if none of these options sound quite right, you could always have a look at the four other variants in the new collection: the Sunset (plush, softer than the Moonlight), Dusk (medium feel, slightly firmer compared to the Midnight), Twilight (firm, designed for side sleepers), or Dawn (the firmest option of the bunch).

Motion Transfer

Next up, let’s chat about motion transfer, or the amount of disturbance that is noticeable from one side of the bed to the other. While this is going to be important for all sleepers, those who sleep with a spouse may find it especially intriguing as it will illuminate just how bothered you will be by your bed mate’s nighttime movements. Hilux Sleep Mattress

Based on my observation, Helix Sleep exceeds expectations for hybrids in this space due to the amount and quality of foam it contains, in addition to the pocketed coils that help keep motion at its source. If you’re a light sleeper worried that motion from the other side of the mattress will bother you, then you should not have a lot of concern with this mattress. I’d say that any of the Helix mattresses would be a good option for couples.

Sinkage

While getting a new mattress, the majority of men and women would like to know whether they will feel like they are sinking “into” the it or lying “on top” of it.

While you are likely to experience some immediate sinkage in the soft foam on top, when you sink through these layers, you are going to find the individually-wrapped coils and feel amazing support. This combo will appeal to a vast assortment of individuals, but will satisfy back and stomach sleepers in particular.

Edge Support

While I do feel the memory foam compress as I sit close to the edge of the mattress, the individually-wrapped coils prevent the mattress from collapsing too much beyond that. I feel very secure sitting on the bed.

In my view, Helix mattresses perform above average for edge support in comparison to other bed-in-a-box brands, and this is due to their freshly updated edges that contain reinforcement in the coil unit. There may be some compression at the comfort foams when you sit with all your weight on the side, but lying on the side should feel comfortable and safe. Partners who want more space to stretch out typically appreciate strong edges.

Laying down, I feel like I could get near the edge of the mattress without feeling like I’ll roll off or be ejected from the bed. Overall, I believe the Helix mattress has great edge support.

100 Night Sleep Trial

One of the best features of buying a mattress-in-a-box online is the sleep trials that they typically come with. Helix Sleep is no different. You create the mattress that is made for you, place your order, and within two weeks, it’s delivered to your door. From the minute you click to buy the mattress, you’ve got 100 nights to try it out (minus the time for delivery, so it is more like 90 nights). If it isn’t perfect, you can return it for free of charge, and receive a full refund.

If you do return the mattress, it isn’t resold or restocked. In fact, the company locates a local place to donate it. When there’s no way Helix Sleep can find a way to donate your returned mattress, it is recycled instead. Hilux Sleep Mattress

Helix Warranty

Helix offers an awesome 10-year warranty that covers defects, but it has limitations, exceptions, plus the burden of proof is on the purchaser (like most guarantees ). Of course, you should be the first owner of the mattress to use the warranty, and you will need to be sure you save your receipt as proof of purchase.

As long as you follow all Helix’s expectations for use, your warranty is valid. That means you need to have a suitable base (no adjustable bed frames or slats over 4 inches apart) and that you don’t use the mattress improperly – no jumping on the bed!

If your Helix starts to have an indentation of 1″ or more, something that generally happens when low-density foams break down, you could qualify for a replacement or repair of your mattress.

What’s The Best Way To Care For Your Helix?

Helix mattresses require no turning, but it’s suggested that you rotate the mattress possibly once or twice a year to keep it from wearing down from excessive sagging.

For regular cleanup, it is advised to use cool water with gentle dish soap to clean any stains or dirt. Make sure to clean using soft circular motions, rather than rubbing.
