Helix Sleep sells hybrid mattresses manufactured using polyfoam comfort systems, dual-layer covers, and pocketed coil support cores fortified with polyfoam base layers. Helix Wiki

Helix Sleep allows complete mattress customization. Purchasers are asked to complete a survey that discusses their weight, height, firmness preferences, sleep position, and other factors. Based on these results, Helix Sleep will suggest one of the following 6 mattress options; each individual option gives a unique combination of firmness and support:

  • Helix Sunset: ‘Soft’ firmness, targeted cushioning, and balanced support
  • Helix Moonlight: ‘Soft’ firmness, moderate cushioning, and extra support
  • Helix Midnight: ‘Medium’ firmness, targeted cushioning, and balanced support
  • Helix Dusk: ‘Medium’ firmness, moderate cushioning, and additional support
  • Helix Twilight: ‘Firm’ firmness, targeted cushioning, and balanced support
  • Helix Dawn: ‘Firm’ firmness, moderate cushioning, and extra support

Helix Wiki

Helix Sleep mattresses with targeted cushioning conform closely, which makes them ideal for those who sleep on their side. While hybrids that have moderate cushioning do not conform as much and are suitable for all sleep positions. Lighter individuals may feel more comfortable on models with balanced support, while those that weigh 130 pounds or more often prefer the variants with additional support.

Helix Sleep also offers 2 mattresses with dual-firmness, the Helix Dual Balanced (with balanced support and targeted cushioning) and the Helix Dual Extra (with moderate cushioning and extra support). Both these mattresses have one ‘Firm’ side and one ‘Soft’ side, which makes them ideal for couples with differing preferences. Last, the Helix Nightfall is a hybrid developed for larger, heavier people. This model has an additional layer of memory foam for maximum support.

My review of Helix Sleep mattresses found that the customizable selection accommodates sleepers with a large range of body types and firmness preferences. The mattresses also offer strong edge support, isolate movement well, and create less noise than the average hybrid. Helix Wiki

Construction Helix Wiki

All nine of the different iterations of this mattress will differ slightly in construction, but for 6 of the 9 models, the construction should be fairly similar. The six core models (listed above) are 10 inches tall, made up of 6 inches of individually wrapped coils and 4 inches of foam.

Helix mattresses differ in density and firmness depending on the foams utilized in order to achieve more/less firmness and more/less support. The four different foams utilized within Helix mattresses are memory foam, high-grade polyurethane foam, Helix Dynamic Foam, and a DuraDense Foam (aka support foam). Not all the beds have all the foams – some just have 3 of the 4 – but it really won’t matter much for the buyer. The foams are just levers that Helix Sleep can pull to be able to offer 9 distinct models (and supposedly have a model for everybody). Helix Wiki

Below, I concisely talk about the construction (materials and quality) of your average Helix mattress, the Helix Midnight.

helix-midnight-construction

Cover – Originally, all Helix mattresses come with the same cover, made of 100 percent polyester. I thought it to be thin and pliable, allowing for some nice breathability. However, if you want something more luxurious, you can opt to swap out the standard cover for the brand’s UltraCool one, which is composed of a phase-change material for heat regulation.

Comfort Layer – Up top, you will find a heavy layer of memory foam. This type of foam has a slow response to pressure, which means you’re probably going to experience some satisfying body shaping. Even though it may seem strange for a supposedly medium firm mattress to incorporate a memory foam layer, it’s important to remember that the existence of deep sinkage does not always translate to softness; in fact, most of the time it gives quite a firm feel.

Transition Layer – After sinking through the memory foam comfort layer, you will discover a transition layer of poly foam. This layer of foam works to suppress the sinkage of the comfort layer and create a supportive, medium firm feeling as you reach the individually wrapped coils underneath.

Support Layer – Most of the mattress consists of this section of pocketed coils. This system brings a supportive lift to the structure, working to place the sleeper “on top” of the bed, as opposed to “in it”. Since these coils are wrapped individually, they’re also likely to give additional breathability as air flows through the spaces in the coils.

Base Layer – Last, you’ll discover a thin section of high-density poly foam. This layer doesn’t affect the feel of the mattress too much, working mostly to give the individually wrapped coils something off of which to respond.

Firmness and Support

After taking a peek at the construction of the Helix mattresses, let us discuss their varying feels and firmness levels.

helix-mattress-firmness-and-support-scale

The firmness of the Helix is going to differ widely depending on which version you choose. The Helix Dusk and Midnight, have moderate firmness levels, which will be very versatile and therefore best-selling. If you have more specific preferences, however, Helix Sleep would be happy to oblige you with additional choices.

Laying down on the Helix Midnight, the memory foam comfort layer is soft and generates some quality body shaping, while the other materials in the mattress work to counteract this and create an overall firmer structure. The individually-wrapped coils and the firmer support foams also assist with re-positioning.

For those who sleep on their back, there’s just enough good comfort material here to conform to your lumbar while supporting your whole back in a neutral position. For heavier sleepers or those who prefer a firmer mattress, there are 2 more choices for you in the Helix Dawn and Helix Twilight models.

Many side sleepers should feel totally comfortable on the Midnight, but, if you’re wanting less pressure while still sticking with a versatile medium firmness, you may want to take a look at the Helix Dusk, which utilizes a body-conforming latex-alternative foam that’s breathable and provides the surface a little bit of bounce.

Side sleepers typically have to be more mindful of pressure because they sleep with most of their weight on a smaller area. People who are smaller than average or people in the market for a lot of pressure relief might want to stick to the plusher variants.

Those who sleep on their stomach should feel supported in the Midnight, especially if this isn’t their primary position or they tend to switch things up a lot. Firmer choices might be preferable for exclusive stomach sleepers so that they can make sure their hips don’t dip and over-arch their spine.

Finally, Helix Sleep suggests Helix mattresses for sleepers up to 350 pounds or couples who weigh a maximum of 250 lbs each. If you or your spouse are substantially larger than average, Helix has also created a bed called the Nightfall that’s built to accommodate a combined weight of 1000 lbs.

Partners with differing types of bodies or tastes can also pick a dual comfort variant that pairs Firm with Plush.

Bear in mind that if none of those models sound quite right, you can always have a look at the four other beds in the new collection: the Sunset (plush, softer than the Moonlight), Dusk (moderate feel, a little firmer compared to the Midnight), Twilight (firm, designed for side sleepers), or Dawn (the firmest mattress in the line).

Motion Transfer

Now, let’s talk about motion transfer, or the amount of activity that is noticeable from 1 side of the mattress to the other. While this is going to be significant for many sleepers, those who doze with a partner may find it especially intriguing as it’ll illuminate just how bothered you will be by your bed mate’s nighttime movements. Helix Wiki

Based on my observation, Helix exceeds expectations for hybrid mattresses in this space due to the amount and quality of foam it contains, in addition to the individually wrapped coils that help keep motion at its source. If you are a light sleeper afraid that motion from the opposite side of the mattress will wake you, then you shouldn’t have a lot of concern with this hybrid. I’d say that all of the Helix mattresses would be a good option for couples.

Sinkage

When getting a new mattress, the majority of individuals wish to know whether they’ll feel like they’re sinking “into” the it or lying “on top” of it.

While you may experience a little immediate sinkage from the uppermost foam layers, when you sink through those layers, you will find the individually-wrapped coils and experience great support. This combination will interest a wide range of individuals, but will satisfy stomach and back sleepers in particular.

Edge Support

While I do feel the foam compress as I sit near the edge of the bed, the individually-wrapped coils prevent the mattress from collapsing too much . I feel very secured seated on the bed.

In my view, Helix mattresses are well above average for edge support in comparison to other bed-in-a-box brands, and this is because of their freshly updated edges that contain reinforcement in the coil system. There can be some compression in the comfort foams when you sit with all your weight on the side, but lying on the side will feel comfortable and safe. Partners who need more space to stretch out normally love stronger edges.

Laying down, I also feel like I can get near the edge of the mattress without feeling like I will fall off or be ejected from the bed. Overall, I think the Helix mattress has nice edge support.

100 Night Sleep Trial

Among the best features of buying a bed-in-a-box online is the sleep trials they typically come with. Helix Sleep is not any different. You create the mattress that’s meant for you, place your order, and in two weeks, it’s sent to your home. From the minute you click to buy the mattress, you have 100 nights to try it out (minus the time for delivery, so it’s more like 90 nights). If it is not perfect, you can return it for free, and receive a full refund.

If you do return the mattress, it is not restocked or resold. In fact, the company does its best to find a local place to donate it. If there is no way the company can find a way to donate your refunded mattress, it is recycled instead. Helix Wiki

Helix Warranty

Helix offers a generous 10-year warranty that covers defects, but it has some limitations, exceptions, and the burden of proof is on the consumer (like most guarantees ). Of course, you must be the first owner of the mattress to use the warranty, and you will need to be sure that you save your receipt as proof of purchase.

Provided that you follow all the manufacturer’s expectations for use, your warranty is valid. That means you need to use a suitable foundation (no adjustable bed frames or slats over 4 inches apart) and that you don’t use the Helix improperly – no jumping on it!

If your mattress starts to show an indentation of 1″ or more, which is what generally happens when low-density foams break down, then you could be eligible for a repair or replacement of your Helix.

What’s The Best Way To Care For Your Helix?

Helix mattresses require no flipping, but it is recommended that you rotate the mattress possibly a couple of times a year to keep it from wearing down from excess sagging.

For routine cleanup, it is suggested to use cool water with gentle dish detergent to clean any dirt or stains. Make certain to wash using soft circular motions, instead of rubbing.
