Helix Sleep sells hybrid mattresses manufactured with dual-layer covers, polyfoam comfort systems, and pocketed coil support cores reinforced using polyfoam base layers. Helix Vs Amerisleep

Helix Sleep offers complete mattress customization. Buyers are urged to fill out a survey that discusses their weight, height, firmness preferences, sleep position, and other options. Then based on these answers, Helix Sleep will recommend one of the following six mattress variants; each respective model offers a unique combination of firmness and support:

  • Helix Sunset: ‘Soft’ firmness, targeted cushioning, and balanced support
  • Helix Moonlight: ‘Soft’ firmness, moderate cushioning, and extra support
  • Helix Midnight: ‘Medium’ firmness, targeted cushioning, and balanced support
  • Helix Dusk: ‘Medium’ firmness, moderate cushioning, and additional support
  • Helix Twilight: ‘Firm’ firmness, targeted cushioning, and balanced support
  • Helix Dawn: ‘Firm’ firmness, moderate cushioning, and extra support

Helix Vs Amerisleep

Helix Sleep hybrids that have targeted cushioning conform closely, making them perfect for side sleepers. While mattresses with moderate cushioning don’t conform as much and are great for pretty much all sleep positions. Lighter men and women may feel most comfortable on variants with balanced support, while people who weigh 130 pounds or more tend to favor the variants with additional support.

Helix Sleep also markets 2 mattresses with dual-firmness, the Helix Dual Balanced (with targeted cushioning and balanced support) and the Helix Dual Extra (with moderate cushioning and extra support). Both these mattresses have one ‘Soft’ side and one ‘Firm’ side, which makes them great for couples with differing preferences. Lastly, the Helix Nightfall is a hybrid designed for larger, heavier people. This mattress has an additional layer of memory foam for optimum support.

My review of Helix Sleep mattresses found that the customizable aspect conforms to sleepers with a wide assortment of firmness preferences and body types. The mattresses also provide strong edge support, isolate motion transfer nicely, and produce less noise than the average hybrid. Helix Vs Amerisleep

Construction Helix Vs Amerisleep

All 9 of the various iterations of the mattress will differ slightly in construction, but for 6 of the 9 variants, the construction should be quite similar. The six core models (listed above) are 10 inches tall, made up of 6 inches of individually wrapped coils and 4 inches of foam.

Helix mattresses differ in firmness and density depending on the foams utilized in order to attain more/less support and more/less firmness. The 4 different foams utilized within Helix mattresses are memory foam, high-grade polyurethane foam, Helix Dynamic Foam, and a DuraDense Foam (aka support foam). Not all the models have all of the foams – some only have 3 of the 4 – but it really shouldn’t matter much for the buyer. The foams are just levers that Helix Sleep can pull in order to offer 9 unique versions (and hopefully have a model for everybody). Helix Vs Amerisleep

Below, I briefly talk about the construction (materials and quality) of your average Helix mattress, the Helix Midnight.

helix-midnight-construction

Cover – Initially, all Helix mattresses have the same cover, made of 100% polyester. I found it to be thin and pliable, allowing for some nice breathability. However, if you want something more luxurious, you can choose to swap out the standard cover for the UltraCool one, which is made up of a phase-change fabric to regulate temperature.

Comfort Layer – Up top, you will discover a thick layer of memory foam. This type of foam has a slow response to pressure, meaning you are likely to experience some great body shaping. Even though it may seem strange for a purportedly medium firmness bed to feature a memory foam layer, it’s crucial to remember that the presence of deep sinkage does not always translate to softness; in actuality, most of the time it gives quite a firm feel.

Transition Layer – After getting past the comfort layer, you’ll uncover a transition layer of poly foam. This layer works to curb the sinkage of the comfort layer and create a supportive, medium firm feeling as you reach the individually wrapped coils below.

Support Layer – The majority of the mattress is made up of this segment of individually wrapped coils. This system brings a supportive lift into the construction, working to position the sleeper “on top” of the mattress, instead of “in it”. Since these coils are individually wrapped, they’re also likely to encourage additional breathability as air flows in between the spaces in the coils.

Base Layer – Lastly, you will uncover a thin section of high-density poly foam. This layer doesn’t affect the feel of the bed too much, working mostly to provide the individually wrapped coils something off of which to respond.

Firmness and Support

After having a peek at the construction of the Helix mattresses, let us talk about their varying firmness levels and feels.

helix-mattress-firmness-and-support-scale

The firmness level of the Helix will differ widely depending on the model you select. The Helix Dusk and Midnight, have medium firmness levels, which will be quite versatile and therefore best-selling. If you have more specific requirements, however, Helix Sleep will be happy to provide you with more choices.

Lying down on the Helix Midnight, the memory foam layer feels soft and produces some quality body contouring, while the other materials in the mattress work to control this and make an overall firmer composition. The firmer support foams and pocketed coils also assist with re-positioning.

For those who sleep on their back, there’s enough good comfort material in the mattress to conform to your lumbar while supporting your whole back in a neutral position. For heavier sleepers or people who want a firmer mattress, there are two more choices for you in the Helix Twilight and Helix Dawn variants.

Majority of side sleepers will feel perfectly comfortable on the Midnight, but, if you are wanting a bit less pressure while still sticking with a flexible medium firmness, you might decide to check out the Helix Dusk, which utilizes a body-conforming latex-alternative foam that’s breathable and gives the surface a little bit of bounce.

Side sleepers typically have to be more mindful of pressure since they sleep with most their weight on a smaller area. Those who are lighter than average or those looking for lots of pressure relief might want to stick to the plusher models.

Those who sleep on their stomach should feel supported in the Midnight, particularly if this is not their primary position or they tend to switch things up a lot. Firmer choices might be preferable for exclusive stomach sleepers so they can make sure their hips don’t dip and over-arch their spine.

Lastly, the manufacturer recommends Helix for sleepers up to 350 pounds or partners who weigh up to 250 lbs each. If you or your spouse are significantly bigger than average, Helix has also produced a bed called the Nightfall that’s built to accommodate a combined weight of 1000 lbs.

Couples with different body types or tastes may also pick a dual comfort option that combines Firm with Plush.

Keep in mind that if none of those options sound quite right, you can always have a look at the four other beds in the newest collection: the Sunset (plush, softer compared to the Moonlight), Dusk (moderate feel, slightly firmer than the Midnight), Twilight (firm, made for side sleepers), or Dawn (the firmest variant in the line).

Motion Transfer

Now, let us chat about motion transfer, or the amount of disturbance that is detectable from 1 side of the bed to the other. While this will be important for all people, those who sleep with a partner may find it particularly interesting as it’ll show just how bothered you’ll be by your bed mate’s nighttime movements. Helix Vs Amerisleep

Based on my observation, Helix Sleep surpasses expectations for hybrids in this space because of the amount and quality of foam it incorporates, as well as the pocketed coils which help trap motion at its source. If you are a light sleeper worried that motion from the other side of the mattress will bother you, you should not have much concern with this mattress. I would say that any of the Helix mattresses would be a good choice for couples.

Sinkage

When buying a new mattress, most people wish to know whether they will feel like they’re sinking “into” the mattress or laying “on top” of it.

Even though you may encounter some immediate sinkage from the soft foam on top, by the time you sink through those layers, you will find the individually-wrapped coils and find great support. This combination will interest a wide assortment of individuals, but will suit back and stomach sleepers in particular.

Edge Support

Though I do feel the foam compress as I sit close to the edge of the mattress, the pocketed coils stop the mattress from collapsing a lot beyond that. I feel quite secure sitting on the bed.

In my view, Helix mattresses perform above average for edge support compared to other bed-in-a-box brands, which is because of their newly updated edges containing reinforcement in the coil system. There may be some compression in the comfort foams when you sit with all your weight on the side, but laying on the side will feel comfortable and secure. Partners who want more space to stretch out normally love strong edges.

Laying down, I also feel like I could get close to the edge of the bed without feeling like I’ll fall over or be pushed off the bed. Overall, I think that the Helix has nice edge support.

100 Night Sleep Trial

One of the best features of buying a mattress-in-a-box online is the sleep trials that they usually come with. Helix is not any different. You create the mattress that is made for you, place your order, and within a couple of weeks, it’s delivered to your door. From the minute you click to order the mattress, you’ve got 100 nights to test it out (minus the time for delivery, so it is more like 90 nights). If it isn’t perfect, you can return it free of charge, and get a full refund.

Should you return the mattress, it isn’t restocked or resold. Actually, Helix Sleep finds a local place to donate it. When there’s no way the company can find a way to donate your returned mattress, it’s recycled instead. Helix Vs Amerisleep

Helix Warranty

The Helix Mattress includes a generous 10-year warranty that covers defects, but it has a few limitations, exceptions, while the burden of proof is on the consumer (like most warranties). Of course, you should be the first owner of the mattress to use the warranty, and you need to be sure you save your receipt as proof of purchase.

Provided that you follow all of Helix’s expectations for use, your warranty should be valid. That means you will need to have a suitable foundation (no adjustable bed frames or slats more than 4″ apart) and you don’t use the mattress improperly – no jumping on the bed!

If your Helix starts to show an indentation of 1″ or more, something that generally happens when low-density foams break down, then you could be eligible for a repair or replacement of your mattress.

What’s The Best Way To Care For Your Helix?

Helix mattresses require no flipping, but it’s suggested that you rotate the mattress perhaps a couple of times a year to keep it from wearing down from excessive sagging.

For regular cleaning, it is suggested to use cold water with gentle dish soap to clean any stains or dirt. Make certain that you clean using gentle circular motions, rather than rubbing.
