Helix Sleep sells hybrid mattresses made using dual-layer covers, polyfoam comfort systems, and pocketed coil support cores enhanced with polyfoam base layers. Helix Versus Purple

Helix Sleep offers complete mattress customization. Purchasers are requested to fill out a survey that asks for their weight, height, firmness preferences, sleep position, and other elements. Then based on these results, Helix Sleep will suggest one of the following 6 mattress models; each respective option offers a one-of-a-kind combination of support and firmness:

  • Helix Sunset: ‘Soft’ firmness, targeted cushioning, and balanced support
  • Helix Moonlight: ‘Soft’ firmness, moderate cushioning, and additional support
  • Helix Midnight: ‘Medium’ firmness, targeted cushioning, and balanced support
  • Helix Dusk: ‘Medium’ firmness, moderate cushioning, and extra support
  • Helix Twilight: ‘Firm’ firmness, targeted cushioning, and balanced support
  • Helix Dawn: ‘Firm’ firmness, moderate cushioning, and additional support

Helix Versus Purple

Helix Sleep hybrids that have targeted cushioning conform closely, making them optimal for those who sleep on their side. While hybrids with moderate cushioning don’t conform as much and are great for pretty much all sleep positions. Lighter men and women may feel most comfortable on models with balanced support, while people who weigh 130 pounds or more tend to favor the models with additional support.

Helix Sleep also markets two variants with dual-firmness, the Helix Dual Balanced (with balanced support and targeted cushioning) and the Helix Dual Extra (with extra support and moderate cushioning). Both of these models have one ‘Soft’ side and one ‘Firm’ side, making them ideal for couples with different tastes. Lastly, the Helix Nightfall is a hybrid developed for larger, heavier individuals. This model has an additional layer of memory foam for optimum support.

My review of Helix Sleep mattresses found that the customizable aspect conforms to sleepers with a wide variety of firmness preferences and body types. The mattresses also have strong edge support, isolate motion transfer well, and create less noise than the average hybrid. Helix Versus Purple

Construction Helix Versus Purple

All 9 of the various iterations of this mattress will differ slightly in construction, but for 6 of the 9 models, the construction will be fairly similar. The 6 core models (listed above) are 10 inches tall, composed of 6 inches of pocketed coils and 4 inches of foam.

Helix mattresses vary in firmness and density based upon the foams utilized in order to achieve more/less firmness and more/less support. The 4 different foams used within Helix mattresses are memory foam, high-grade polyurethane foam, Helix Dynamic Foam, and a DuraDense Foam (aka support foam). Not all the beds have all of the foams – some only have three of the four – but it really won’t matter much for the purchaser. The foams are just levers that Helix Sleep can pull in order to offer 9 unique variants (and supposedly have a model for everybody). Helix Versus Purple

Underneath, I quickly talk about the construction (materials and quality) of the typical Helix mattress, the Helix Midnight.

helix-midnight-construction

Cover – Originally, all Helix mattresses come with the same cover, made of 100% polyester. I found it to be thin and pliable, allowing for some nice breathability. But, if you prefer something more amped up, you can opt to swap out the regular cover for the brand’s UltraCool one, which is composed of a phase change fabric for temperature regulation.

Comfort Layer – On top, you will discover a thick layer of memory foam. This material has a slow reaction to pressure, which means you are likely to experience some gratifying body contouring. Even though it may seem odd for a supposedly medium firm mattress to feature a memory foam layer, it’s important to remember that the feeling of deep sinkage does not always translate to softness; in fact, oftentimes it produces quite a firm feeling.

Transition Layer – After getting past the comfort layer, you’ll uncover a transition layer of poly foam. This layer of foam works to suppress the sinkage of the comfort layer and create a supportive, medium firm feel as you reach the pocketed coils below.

Support Layer – The majority of the mattress is made up of this section of individually wrapped coils. This system brings a supportive lift to the construction, working to position the sleeper “on top” of the mattress, instead of “in it”. Since the coils are wrapped individually, they’re also going to encourage extra breathability as air flows in between the spaces in the coils.

Base Layer – Lastly, you’ll uncover a thin segment of high-density poly foam. This layer does not really affect the feel of the bed too much, functioning mostly to give the individually wrapped coils something off of which to respond.

Firmness and Support

After taking a look at the construction of the Helix mattresses, let’s talk about their varying firmness levels and feels.

helix-mattress-firmness-and-support-scale

The firmness level of the Helix is going to differ widely depending on the version you choose. The Helix Midnight and Dusk, have moderate firmness levels, which tends to be very versatile and thus exceptionally popular. If you have more specific needs, however, Helix Sleep will be happy to oblige you with additional options.

Laying down on the Helix Midnight, the uppermost foam layer feels soft and produces some quality body contouring, while the other materials within the mattress work to counteract this and create an overall firmer composition. The individually-wrapped coils and the firmer support foams also assist with re-positioning.

For those who sleep on their back, there is just enough good comfort material in the Midnight to conform to your lower spine while supporting your whole back in a neutral position. For heavier sleepers or those who prefer a firmer mattress, there are 2 more options for you in the Helix Dawn and Helix Twilight variants.

Majority of side sleepers will feel totally comfortable on the Midnight, however, if you’re wanting a bit less pressure while still going with a versatile medium firmness, you might decide to take a look at the Helix Dusk, which uses a body-conforming latex-alternative foam that is breathable and gives the surface a little bit of bounce.

Those who sleep on their side typically have to be mindful of pressure since they sleep with most of their weight on a smaller region. People who are lighter than average or those in the market for a lot of pressure relief may want to stick to the plusher variants.

Stomach sleepers should feel supported in the Midnight, particularly if this is not their main position or they tend to change things up a lot. Firmer choices might be preferable for exclusive tummy sleepers so that they can ensure their hips do not dip and over-arch their backbone.

Last, the manufacturer recommends Helix mattresses for sleepers around 350 lbs or couples that weigh up to 250 lbs each. In the event you or your partner are substantially larger than average, Helix has also produced a mattress called the Nightfall that is built to accommodate a total weight of 1000 lbs.

Partners with differing types of bodies or preferences may also pick a dual comfort variant that combines Firm with Plush.

Bear in mind that if none of these options sound right, you may always check out the 4 other variants in the new collection: the Sunset (plush, softer compared to the Moonlight), Dusk (medium feel, slightly firmer compared to the Midnight), Twilight (firm, made for side sleepers), or Dawn (the firmest variant in the collection).

Motion Transfer

Next up, let’s chat about motion transfer, or the amount of disturbance that’s noticeable from 1 side of the bed to the other. While this is going to be important for all people, those who sleep with a partner may find it especially intriguing as it will show just how bothered you’ll be by your partner’s nighttime movements. Helix Versus Purple

Based on my observation, Helix surpasses expectations for hybrid mattresses in this space because of the amount and quality of foam it incorporates, in addition to the individually wrapped coils which help trap motion at its source. If you’re a light sleeper afraid that motion from the other side of the mattress will bother you, you shouldn’t have much concern with this mattress. I’d say that any of the Helix mattresses would be a good option for couples.

Sinkage

While getting a brand-new mattress, the majority of people would like to know whether they will feel as though they are sinking “into” the mattress or lying “on top” of it.

While you are going to encounter a little immediate sinkage from the soft foam on top, when you sink through those layers, you will reach the individually-wrapped coils and experience amazing support. This combination will interest a wide range of sleepers, but will satisfy back and stomach sleepers in particular.

Edge Support

Though I do feel the memory foam compress as I sit near the edge of the Helix Midnight, the pocketed coils stop the mattress from collapsing a lot beyond that. I feel very secured seated on the bed.

In my opinion, Helix mattresses perform above average for edge support compared to other bed-in-a-box brands, and this is due to their freshly updated edges that contain reinforcement in the coil system. There can be some compression in the comfort foams when you sit with your entire weight on the side, but laying on the side will feel comfortable and secure. Couples who need more space to stretch out typically appreciate strong edges.

Laying down, I feel like I can get close to the edge of the mattress without feeling like I’ll fall over or be ejected from the bed. Overall, I think that the Helix has nice edge support.

100 Night Sleep Trial

One of the best features of buying a bed-in-a-box online is the sleep trials that they typically come with. Helix is no different. You customize the mattress that is made for you, place your order, and in 2 weeks, it is sent to your door. From the moment you click to buy the mattress, you have 100 nights to test it out (minus the time for delivery, so it is more like 90 nights). If it isn’t what you wanted, you can return it for free, and get a complete refund.

If you do return the mattress, it isn’t resold or restocked. Actually, the company locates a local place to donate it. When there’s no way Helix can find a way to donate your returned mattress, they have it recycled instead. Helix Versus Purple

Helix Warranty

The Helix Mattress includes a generous 10-year guarantee that covers defects, but it has a few limitations, exceptions, while the burden of proof is on the customer (like most guarantees ). Of course, you must be the first owner of the Helix to use the warranty, and you will need to be sure you save your receipt as proof of purchase.

As long as you follow all of the manufacturer’s expectations for use, your warranty should be valid. That means you will need to have a proper base (no adjustable bed frames or slats more than 4 inches apart) and that you don’t use the Helix improperly – no jumping on it!

If your mattress starts to show an indentation of 1″ or longer, something that generally happens when low-density foams break down, you could qualify for a replacement or repair of your mattress.

What’s The Best Way To Care For Your Helix?

Helix mattresses require no turning, but it’s suggested that you rotate the mattress perhaps once or twice a year to keep it from wearing down from excessive sagging.

For routine cleaning, it’s suggested to use cold water along gentle dish detergent to clean any dirt or stains. Be certain to wash using soft circular motions, rather than rubbing.
