Helix Sleep offers hybrid mattresses manufactured using dual-layer covers, polyfoam comfort systems, and pocketed coil support cores enhanced with polyfoam base layers. Helix Versus Purple Mattress

Helix Sleep gives you complete mattress customization. Buyers are requested to fill out a questionnaire that discusses their height, weight, sleep position, firmness preferences, and other factors. Based on these answers, Helix Sleep will suggest one of the following six mattress options; each individual option provides a one-of-a-kind combination of support and firmness:

  • Helix Sunset: ‘Soft’ firmness, targeted cushioning, and balanced support
  • Helix Moonlight: ‘Soft’ firmness, moderate cushioning, and extra support
  • Helix Midnight: ‘Medium’ firmness, targeted cushioning, and balanced support
  • Helix Dusk: ‘Medium’ firmness, moderate cushioning, and additional support
  • Helix Twilight: ‘Firm’ firmness, targeted cushioning, and balanced support
  • Helix Dawn: ‘Firm’ firmness, moderate cushioning, and extra support

Helix Versus Purple Mattress

Helix Sleep mattresses with targeted cushioning conform closely, making them ideal for side sleepers. While those that have moderate cushioning don’t conform as much and are great for all sleep positions. Lighter people may feel more comfy on models with balanced support, while those that weigh 130 pounds or more often favor the models with extra support.

Helix Sleep also markets 2 models with dual-firmness, the Helix Dual Balanced (with balanced support and targeted cushioning) and the Helix Dual Extra (with moderate cushioning and extra support). Both of these models have one ‘Firm’ side and one ‘Soft’ side, which makes them ideal for couples with different preferences. Lastly, the Helix Nightfall is a hybrid designed for bigger, heavier people. This model has an extra layer of memory foam for optimum support.

My review of Helix Sleep mattresses found that the customizable aspect conforms to sleepers with a wide assortment of body types and firmness preferences. The mattresses also provide strong edge support, isolate motion transfer nicely, and create less noise than the average hybrid. Helix Versus Purple Mattress

Construction Helix Versus Purple Mattress

All nine of the various iterations of this mattress will differ slightly in construction, but for 6 of the 9 variants, the construction will be quite similar. The 6 core models (listed above) are 10 inches tall, made up of 6 inches of individually wrapped coils and 4 inches of foam.

Helix mattresses vary in firmness and density based on the foams used in order to achieve more/less support and more/less firmness. The 4 different foams used within Helix mattresses are memory foam, high-grade polyurethane foam, Helix Dynamic Foam, and a DuraDense Foam (aka support foam). Not all the mattresses have all of the foams – some only have three of the four – but it really shouldn’t matter much for the buyer. The foams are just levers that Helix Sleep can pull in order to offer nine unique versions (and supposedly have a model for everybody). Helix Versus Purple Mattress

Underneath, I briefly discuss the construction (materials and quality) of the typical Helix mattress, the Helix Midnight.

Cover – Initially, all Helix mattresses come with exactly the same cover, made of 100% polyester. I found it to be pliable and thin, allowing for some nice breathability. But, if you would like something more lavish, you can choose to swap out the standard cover for the UltraCool one, which is composed of a phase change fabric for temperature regulation.

Comfort Layer – Up top, you’ll find a thick layer of memory foam. This type of foam has a slow reaction to pressure, which means you’re likely to experience some great body shaping. While it might seem odd for a supposedly medium firmness mattress to feature a memory foam comfort layer, it’s crucial to remember that the feeling of deep sinkage doesn’t necessarily translate to softness; in fact, oftentimes it generates quite a firm feeling.

Transition Layer – After sinking through the memory foam comfort layer, you will discover a transition layer of poly foam. This layer works to suppress the sinkage of the comfort layer and set a supportive, medium firm feeling as you reach the pocketed coils below.

Support Layer – Most of the mattress is made up of this segment of pocketed coils. This system gives a supportive lift to the construction, working to put the sleeper “on top” of the bed, as opposed to “in it”. Because the coils are individually wrapped, they’re also likely to encourage extra breathability as air flows through the spaces in the coils.

Base Layer – Last, you will uncover a thin section of high-density poly foam. This section doesn’t really affect the feel of the bed too much, working mostly to give the individually wrapped coils something off of which to react.

Firmness and Support

After taking a peek at the construction of the Helix mattresses, let’s talk about their varying feels and firmness levels.

helix-mattress-firmness-and-support-scale

The firmness of the Helix will differ widely depending on the version you select. The Helix Midnight and Dusk, have medium firmness levels, which tends to be very versatile and thus best-selling. If you are more particular, however, Helix Sleep will be happy to oblige you with more options.

Laying down on the Helix Midnight, the uppermost foam comfort layer feels soft and produces some top quality body contouring, while the other materials within the Midnight work to counteract this and make an overall firmer composition. The individually-wrapped coils and the firmer support foams also help with re-positioning.

For back sleepers, there’s enough good comfort material here to conform to your lower spine while supporting your back in a neutral position. For larger sleepers or people who prefer a firmer mattress, there are 2 more choices for you in the Helix Twilight and Helix Dawn models.

Majority of side sleepers should feel totally comfy on the Midnight, but, if you’re needing less pressure while still sticking with a flexible medium firmness, you may want to take a look at the Helix Dusk, which uses a body-conforming latex-alternative foam that’s breathable and gives the surface a little bit of bounce.

Side sleepers typically need to be mindful of pressure since they sleep with most of their weight on a smaller region. People who are smaller than average or those in the market for a lot of pressure relief may want to stick to the plusher models.

Those who sleep on their stomach should feel comfortable in the Midnight, particularly if this isn’t their main position or they have a tendency to change things up a lot. Firmer mattresses may be preferable for exclusive tummy sleepers so that they can make sure their hips don’t dip and over-arch their back.

Last, the manufacturer recommends Helix for sleepers up to 350 lbs or partners that weigh up to 250 lbs each. If you or your spouse are significantly larger than average, the company has also produced a bed called the Nightfall that’s made to accommodate a combined weight of 1000 lbs.

Partners with differing types of bodies or preferences may also select a dual comfort option that combines Firm with Plush.

Bear in mind that if none of these models seem quite right, you can always check out the four other variants in the newest collection: the Sunset (plush, softer than the Moonlight), Dusk (medium feel, slightly firmer than the Midnight), Twilight (firm, designed for side sleepers), or Dawn (the firmest option of the bunch).

Motion Transfer

Next up, let us chat about motion transfer, or the amount of activity that is detectable from one side of the bed to the other. While this will be significant for all people, those who sleep with a partner may find it particularly intriguing as it will illuminate just how bothered you’ll be by your bed mate’s nighttime movements. Helix Versus Purple Mattress

Based on my observation, Helix Sleep exceeds expectations for hybrids in this space due to the amount and quality of foam it incorporates, as well as the pocketed coils which help trap motion at its source. If you’re a light sleeper worried that motion from the opposite side of the mattress will bother you, you shouldn’t have much concern with this mattress. I’d say that any of the Helix mattresses would be a good option for couples.

Sinkage

When buying a brand-new mattress, the majority of individuals wish to know whether they’ll feel like they’re sinking “into” the mattress or laying “on top” of it.

Even though you may encounter some immediate sinkage in the soft foam at the top, by the time you sink through these layers, you’ll hit the individually-wrapped coils and experience great support. This combo will appeal to a vast range of sleepers, but will satisfy back and stomach sleepers the most.

Edge Support

While I do feel the foam collapse as I sit near the edge of the Helix Midnight, the pocketed coils prevent the mattress from compressing a lot beyond that. I feel very secure sitting on the bed.

In my opinion, Helix mattresses perform above average for edge support compared to other bed-in-a-box brands, and this is because of their freshly updated edges that contain reinforcement in the coil system. There can be some compression in the comfort foams when you sit with all your weight on the side, but lying on the side should feel comfortable and safe. Partners who want more space to stretch out typically appreciate stronger edges.

Lying down, I also feel like I could get close to the edge of the bed without feeling like I’ll fall off or be pushed off the bed. Overall, I believe the Helix has nice edge support.

100 Night Sleep Trial

Among the best features of buying a bed-in-a-box online is the sleep trials that they typically include. Helix Sleep is no different. You customize the mattress that’s made for you, place your order, and in 2 weeks, it’s delivered to your door. From the moment you click to buy the mattress, you’ve got 100 nights to test it out (minus the time for delivery, so it’s more like 90 nights). If it isn’t ideal, you can return it free, and get a full refund.

Should you return the mattress, it isn’t restocked or resold. Actually, the company locates a local place to donate it. When there’s no way Helix can find a way to donate your refunded mattress, it is recycled instead. Helix Versus Purple Mattress

Helix Warranty

The Helix Mattress includes a generous 10-year warranty that covers flaws, but it comes with some limitations, exceptions, plus the burden of proof is on the consumer (like most guarantees ). Needless to say, you should be the first owner of the mattress to use the guarantee, and you need to be sure that you keep your receipt as proof of purchase.

Provided that you follow all of Helix’s expectations for use, your warranty is valid. That means you will need to have a proper base (no adjustable bed frames or slats over 4″ apart) and you don’t use the Helix improperly – no jumping on it!

If your mattress begins to have an indentation of 1 inch or longer, which is what usually happens when low-density foams break down, you could qualify for a replacement or repair of your mattress.

What’s The Best Way To Care For Your Helix?

Helix mattresses need no flipping, but it’s suggested that you rotate the mattress possibly a couple of times a year to prevent it from wearing down from excessive sagging.

For routine cleaning, it is advised to use cold water along gentle dish soap to clean any stains or dirt. Make sure to wash using soft circular motions, instead of rubbing.
