Helix Sleep offers hybrid mattresses made using polyfoam comfort systems, dual-layer covers, and pocketed coil support cores fortified using polyfoam base layers. Helix Triple Protection Waterproof Mattress Pad

Helix Sleep gives you full mattress customization. Purchasers are requested to complete a questionnaire that discusses their height, weight, sleep position, firmness preferences, and other elements. Based on these answers, Helix Sleep will recommend one of the following 6 mattress variants; each respective option offers a unique combination of firmness and support:

  • Helix Sunset: ‘Soft’ firmness, targeted cushioning, and balanced support
  • Helix Moonlight: ‘Soft’ firmness, moderate cushioning, and additional support
  • Helix Midnight: ‘Medium’ firmness, targeted cushioning, and balanced support
  • Helix Dusk: ‘Medium’ firmness, moderate cushioning, and extra support
  • Helix Twilight: ‘Firm’ firmness, targeted cushioning, and balanced support
  • Helix Dawn: ‘Firm’ firmness, moderate cushioning, and additional support

Helix Sleep hybrids that have targeted cushioning conform closely, which makes them ideal for those who sleep on their side. While mattresses with moderate cushioning do not conform as much and are great for all sleep positions. Lighter individuals may feel most comfy on models with balanced support, while those who weigh 130 pounds or more tend to prefer the variants with additional support.

Helix Sleep also offers two mattresses with dual-firmness, the Helix Dual Balanced (with balanced support and targeted cushioning) and the Helix Dual Extra (with additional support and moderate cushioning). Both these variants have one ‘Firm’ side and one ‘Soft’ side, making them great for couples with differing preferences. Lastly, the Helix Nightfall is a hybrid designed for larger, heavier people. This mattress has an extra layer of memory foam for optimum support.

My review of Helix Sleep mattresses found that the customizable aspect accommodates sleepers with a wide assortment of body types and firmness preferences. The mattresses also provide strong edge support, isolate motion transfer well, and produce less noise than the normal hybrid. Helix Triple Protection Waterproof Mattress Pad

Construction Helix Triple Protection Waterproof Mattress Pad

All nine of the various iterations of the mattress will differ slightly in construction, but for 6 of the 9 variants, the construction will be fairly similar. The six core variants (listed above) are 10 inches tall, made up of 6 inches of pocketed coils and 4 inches of foam.

Helix mattresses differ in density and firmness depending upon the foams used in order to achieve more/less firmness and more/less support. The four different foams used within Helix mattresses are high-grade polyurethane foam, memory foam, Helix Dynamic Foam, and a DuraDense Foam (aka support foam). Not all of the variants have all the foams – some only have three of the four – but it really won’t matter much for the purchaser. The foams are just levers that Helix Sleep can pull in order to offer 9 different variants (and hopefully have a mattress for everybody). Helix Triple Protection Waterproof Mattress Pad

Below, I briefly talk about the construction (materials and quality) of the average Helix mattress, the Helix Midnight.

helix-midnight-construction

Cover – Originally, all Helix mattresses come with the same cover, made of 100% polyester. I found it to be thin and stretchy, allowing for some wonderful breathability. However, if you would like something more lavish, you can elect to swap out the normal cover for the brand’s UltraCool one, which is made up of a phase change fabric for temperature regulation.

Comfort Layer – On top, you’ll encounter a thick layer of memory foam. This type of foam has a slow response to pressure, which means you are likely to encounter some great body shaping. While it might seem odd for a purportedly medium firmness bed to feature a memory foam layer, it is crucial to remember that the feeling of deep sinkage does not necessarily translate to softness; in actuality, oftentimes it generates quite a firm feeling.

Transition Layer – After sinking through the comfort layer, you will find a transition layer of poly foam. This layer works to suppress the sinkage of the comfort layer and set a supportive, medium firm feel as you reach the individually wrapped coils underneath.

Support Layer – The bulk of the mattress is made up of this segment of individually wrapped coils. This system brings a supportive lift to the structure, working to place the sleeper “on top” of the mattress, as opposed to “in it”. Because the coils are wrapped individually, they’re also likely to allow additional breathability as air flows through the spaces in the coils.

Base Layer – Last but not least, you’ll discover a thin segment of high-density poly foam. This section doesn’t really affect the feel of the mattress too much, working mostly to provide the pocketed coils something off of which to react.

Firmness and Support

After taking a peek at the construction of the Helix mattresses, let’s talk about their varying feels and firmness levels.

The firmness of the Helix is going to differ widely depending on the version you select. The Helix Dusk and Midnight, have moderate firmness levels, which tends to be quite versatile and thus exceptionally popular. If you have more specific preferences, however, Helix Sleep would be happy to oblige you with additional options.

Laying down on the Midnight, the uppermost foam comfort layer feels soft and produces some quality body contouring, while the other materials within the mattress work to counteract this and create an overall firmer structure. The pocketed coils and the firmer support foams also assist with re-positioning.

For back sleepers, there’s just enough good comfort material here to conform to your lumbar while supporting your upper spine in a neutral position. For heavier buyers or those who prefer a firmer bed, there are two more models for you in the Helix Dawn and Helix Twilight models.

Majority of side sleepers will feel totally comfy on the Midnight, but, if you are wanting a bit less pressure while still going with a versatile medium firmness, you may want to take a look at the Helix Dusk, which uses a body-conforming latex-alternative foam that is breathable and provides the surface a little bit of bounce.

Side sleepers typically need to be mindful of pressure because they sleep with most their weight on a smaller region. Those who are lighter than average or those looking for plenty of pressure relief might want to stick to the plusher variants.

Stomach sleepers should feel supported in the Midnight, particularly if this isn’t their main position or they have a tendency to change things up a lot. Firmer mattresses might be preferable for exclusive tummy sleepers so that they can ensure their hips do not dip and over-arch their spine.

Lastly, the manufacturer recommends Helix mattresses for sleepers around 350 lbs or couples that weigh up to 250 lbs each. In the event you or your spouse are significantly bigger than average, Helix has also created a mattress called the Nightfall that is made to accommodate a total weight of 1000 lbs.

Couples with different body types or tastes may also pick a dual comfort model that combines Firm with Plush.

Keep in mind that if neither of those options sound right, you may always check out the 4 other beds in the new collection: the Sunset (plush, softer compared to the Moonlight), Dusk (medium feel, a little firmer compared to the Midnight), Twilight (firm, designed for side sleepers), or Dawn (the firmest mattress in the line).

Motion Transfer

Now, let us talk about motion transfer, or the amount of activity that’s noticeable from one side of the mattress to the other. While this will be important for all sleepers, those who sleep with a partner may find it especially interesting as it will show just how bothered you’ll be by your partner’s nighttime movements. Helix Triple Protection Waterproof Mattress Pad

According to my research, Helix Sleep exceeds expectations for hybrid mattresses in this space because of the quantity and quality of foam it contains, as well as the individually wrapped coils that help trap motion at its source. If you’re a light sleeper worried that motion from the opposite side of the mattress will wake you, you shouldn’t have a lot of concern with this hybrid. I’d say that any of the Helix mattresses are a good choice for couples.

Sinkage

While getting a new mattress, most individuals would like to know whether they’ll feel as though they’re sinking “into” the it or lying “on top” of it.

Even though you may experience a little immediate sinkage in the soft foam on top, by the time you sink through these layers, you will hit the pocketed coils and feel great support. This combo will appeal to a wide range of individuals, but will satisfy back and stomach sleepers in particular.

Edge Support

Though I do feel the memory foam collapse as I sit close to the edge of the bed, the coils prevent the mattress from compressing too much beyond that. I feel quite secure sitting on the bed.

In my opinion, Helix mattresses perform above average when it comes to edge support in comparison to other bed-in-a-box brands, which is because of their newly updated edges that contain reinforcement in the coil system. There may be a little compression in the comfort foams when you sit with your entire weight on the side, but lying on the side will feel comfy and safe. Partners who need more space to stretch out typically appreciate strong edges.

Lying down, I feel like I can get near the edge of the mattress without feeling like I’ll fall over or be pushed off the mattress. Overall, I think that the Helix mattress has nice edge support.

100 Night Sleep Trial

One of the best features of purchasing a bed-in-a-box online is the sleep trials that they typically come with. Helix is no different. You customize the mattress that’s meant for you, place your order, and in a couple of weeks, it’s delivered to your door. From the minute you click to purchase the mattress, you’ve got 100 nights to test it out (minus the time for delivery, so it’s more like 90 nights). If it is not what you wanted, you can return it for free of charge, and receive a complete refund.

Should you return the mattress, it isn’t resold or restocked. Actually, Helix Sleep finds a local place to donate it. When there is no way Helix can find a way to donate your returned mattress, it’s recycled instead. Helix Triple Protection Waterproof Mattress Pad

Helix Warranty

Helix Sleep offers a generous 10-year warranty that covers defects, but it comes with limitations, exceptions, and the burden of proof is on the consumer (like most guarantees ). Needless to say, you should be the original owner of the Helix to make use of the guarantee, and you need to be sure that you keep your receipt as proof of purchase.

As long as you follow all the manufacturer’s expectations for use, your warranty is valid. That means you need to use a suitable base (no adjustable bed frames or slats more than 4 inches apart) and that you don’t use the mattress improperly – no jumping on it!

If your Helix starts to have an indentation of 1″ or longer, which is what generally happens when low-density foams break down, you could qualify for a repair or replacement of your Helix.

What’s The Best Way To Care For Your Helix?

Helix mattresses require no flipping, but it is suggested that you rotate the mattress perhaps a couple of times a year to prevent it from wearing down from excessive sagging.

For routine cleaning, it is suggested to use cold water with gentle dish detergent to clean any stains or dirt. Be certain to wash using gentle circular movements, rather than rubbing.
