Helix Soft Mattress Review

Helix Soft Mattress Review

Helix Sleep offers hybrid mattresses made with dual-layer covers, polyfoam comfort systems, and pocketed coil support cores reinforced with polyfoam base layers. Helix Soft Mattress Review

Helix Sleep allows complete mattress customization. Purchasers are requested to fill out a survey that asks for their weight, height, firmness preferences, sleep position, and other factors. Based on these answers, Helix Sleep will recommend one of the following 6 mattress models; each respective variant offers a unique combination of firmness and support:

  • Helix Sunset: ‘Soft’ firmness, targeted cushioning, and balanced support
  • Helix Moonlight: ‘Soft’ firmness, moderate cushioning, and extra support
  • Helix Midnight: ‘Medium’ firmness, targeted cushioning, and balanced support
  • Helix Dusk: ‘Medium’ firmness, moderate cushioning, and extra support
  • Helix Twilight: ‘Firm’ firmness, targeted cushioning, and balanced support
  • Helix Dawn: ‘Firm’ firmness, moderate cushioning, and extra support

Helix Soft Mattress Review

Helix Sleep hybrids that have targeted cushioning conform closely, making them optimal for side sleepers. While hybrids with moderate cushioning do not conform as much and are great for all sleep positions. Lighter men and women may feel more comfortable on variants with balanced support, while those that weigh 130 pounds or more tend to prefer the variants with additional support.

Helix Sleep also offers 2 models with dual-firmness, the Helix Dual Balanced (with balanced support and targeted cushioning) and the Helix Dual Extra (with moderate cushioning and additional support). Both of these models have one ‘Firm’ side and one ‘Soft’ side, making them great for couples with differing tastes. Lastly, the Helix Nightfall is a hybrid developed for larger, heavier people. This model has an additional layer of memory foam for optimum support.

My review of Helix Sleep mattresses discovered that the customizable selection accommodates sleepers with a large assortment of body types and firmness preferences. The mattresses also offer strong edge support, isolate movement nicely, and create less noise than the normal hybrid. Helix Soft Mattress Review

Construction Helix Soft Mattress Review

All nine of the different iterations of the mattress will differ slightly in construction, but for 6 of the 9 variants, the construction will be fairly similar. The six core variants (listed above) are 10 inches tall, made up of 6 inches of individually wrapped coils and 4 inches of foam.

Helix mattresses vary in density and firmness depending on the foams utilized in order to attain more/less support and more/less firmness. The 4 unique foams utilized within Helix mattresses are high-grade polyurethane foam, memory foam, Helix Dynamic Foam, and a DuraDense Foam (aka support foam). Not all of the variants have all the foams – some only have three of the four – but it really won’t matter much for the buyer. The foams are merely levers that Helix Sleep can pull to be able to offer nine unique versions (and hopefully have a model for everyone). Helix Soft Mattress Review

Below, I quickly talk about the construction (materials and quality) of the average Helix mattress, the Helix Midnight.

helix-midnight-construction

Cover – Initially, all Helix mattresses come with exactly the same cover, made of 100% polyester. I found it to be thin and stretchy, allowing for some great breathability. However, if you would like something more lavish, you can elect to swap out the regular cover for the UltraCool one, which is composed of a phase change material to regulate temperature.

Comfort Layer – On top, you will discover a thick layer of memory foam. This type of foam has a slow response to pressure, which means you are probably going to encounter some gratifying body shaping. Even though it may seem strange for a supposedly medium firm mattress to feature a memory foam layer, it is crucial to remember that the feeling of deep sinkage does not necessarily translate to softness; in fact, most of the time it gives quite a firm feel.

Transition Layer – After sinking through the memory foam comfort layer, you will uncover a transition layer of poly foam. This layer of foam works to curb the sinkage of the comfort layer and establish a supportive, medium firm feel as you hit the individually wrapped coils underneath.

Support Layer – The bulk of the mattress is made up of this section of pocketed coils. This system brings a supportive lift to the construction, working to position the sleeper “on top” of the bed, instead of “in it”. Because these coils are individually wrapped, they’re also likely to give additional breathability as air flows through the spaces in the coils.

Base Layer – Lastly, you’ll discover a thin section of high-density poly foam. This layer doesn’t really affect the feel of the mattress too much, functioning mostly to give the individually wrapped coils something off of which to respond.

Firmness and Support

After taking a look at the construction of the Helix mattresses, let us discuss their varying firmness levels and feels.

helix-mattress-firmness-and-support-scale

The firmness of the Helix will differ widely depending on which model you select. The Helix Dusk and Midnight, have medium firmness levels, which is going to be very versatile and therefore exceptionally popular. If you are more particular, however, Helix Sleep is happy to provide you with more choices.

Laying down on the Midnight, the memory foam layer is soft and produces some quality body shaping, while the rest of the materials in the Midnight work to counteract this and make an overall firmer composition. The pocketed coils and the firmer support foams also help with re-positioning.

For those who sleep on their back, there is enough good comfort material in the Helix Midnight to conform to your lumbar while supporting your back in a neutral position. For heavier sleepers or those who want a firmer mattress, there are 2 more options for you in the Helix Twilight and Helix Dawn variants.

Many side sleepers should feel perfectly comfy on the Midnight, however, if you’re wanting less pressure while still sticking with a flexible medium firmness, you might decide to check out the Helix Dusk, which utilizes a body-conforming latex-alternative foam that is breathable and gives the surface a small bit of bounce.

Side sleepers typically need to be mindful of pressure because they sleep with all their weight on a tinier area. People who are lighter than average or people looking for lots of pressure relief might want to stick to the plusher variants.

Those who sleep on their stomach will feel supported in the Midnight, particularly if this isn’t their main position or they have a tendency to switch things up a lot. Firmer choices may be preferable for exclusive stomach sleepers so that they can make sure their hips don’t dip and over-arch their spine.

Finally, the manufacturer recommends Helix for sleepers up to 350 lbs or couples who weigh up to 250 pounds each. If you or your partner are significantly larger than average, Helix has also created a mattress called the Nightfall that’s made to accommodate a combined weight of 1000 lbs.

Partners with differing body types or preferences can also pick a dual comfort variant that pairs Firm with Plush.

Keep in mind that if neither of those options sound right, you may always check out the 4 other beds in the new collection: the Sunset (plush, softer compared to the Moonlight), Dusk (moderate feel, a little firmer compared to the Midnight), Twilight (firm, made for side sleepers), or Dawn (the firmest variant in the collection).

Motion Transfer

Next up, let us chat about motion transfer, or the amount of disturbance that is detectable from one side of the bed to the other. While this will be important for many buyers, those who sleep with a partner may find it especially interesting as it will show just how bothered you may be by your partner’s nighttime movements. Helix Soft Mattress Review

According to my research, Helix exceeds expectations for hybrids in this space because of the quantity and quality of foam it incorporates, in addition to the individually wrapped coils that help keep motion at its source. If you’re a light sleeper worried that movement from the opposite side of the mattress will wake you, you should not have much concern with this hybrid. I would say that any of the Helix mattresses are a good option for couples.

Sinkage

When getting a brand-new mattress, most individuals wish to know whether they will feel as though they are sinking “into” the it or laying “on top” of it.

Even though you’re likely to encounter some immediate sinkage in the soft foam on top, when you sink through those layers, you will hit the individually-wrapped coils and feel amazing support. This combination will appeal to a wide range of individuals, but will satisfy back and stomach sleepers the most.

Edge Support

While I do feel the foam collapse as I sit close to the edge of the mattress, the pocketed coils stop the mattress from collapsing a lot . I feel very secure seated on the mattress.

In my view, Helix mattresses are well above average when it comes to edge support in comparison to other bed-in-a-box brands, which is because of their recently updated edges that contain reinforcement in the coil unit. There can be some compression in the comfort foams when you sit with your entire weight on the side, but lying on the side should feel comfy and secure. Couples who want more space to stretch out typically appreciate stronger edges.

Lying down, I feel like I could get close to the edge of the mattress without feeling like I’ll roll off or be ejected from the mattress. Overall, I think the Helix mattress has nice edge support.

100 Night Sleep Trial

Among the best features of purchasing a mattress-in-a-box online is the sleep trials that they typically include. Helix is no different. You customize the mattress that’s made for you, place your order, and in 2 weeks, it’s delivered to your door. From the moment you click to buy the mattress, you have 100 nights to check it out (minus the time for delivery, so it is more like 90 nights). If it isn’t perfect, you can return it for free of charge, and get a full refund.

Should you return the mattress, it isn’t restocked or resold. Actually, the company locates a local place to donate it. When there’s no way the company can find a way to donate your refunded mattress, it is recycled instead. Helix Soft Mattress Review

Helix Warranty

Helix offers a generous 10-year warranty that covers defects, but it comes with some limitations, exceptions, and the burden of proof is on the purchaser (like most guarantees ). Needless to say, you should be the first owner of the Helix to make use of the guarantee, and you need to be sure that you save your receipt as proof of purchase.

Provided that you follow all of Helix’s expectations for use, your warranty will be valid. That means you need to use a proper base (no adjustable bed frames or slats over 4 inches apart) and you don’t use the Helix improperly – no jumping on it!

If your Helix starts to have an indentation of 1″ or more, something that generally happens when low-density foams break down, you could qualify for a repair or replacement of your Helix.

What’s The Best Way To Care For Your Helix?

Helix mattresses need no turning, but it is suggested that you rotate the mattress perhaps once or twice a year to keep it from wearing down from excess sagging.

For regular cleanup, it is advised to use cool water with gentle dish soap to clean any stains or dirt. Make certain to clean using gentle circular motions, rather than rubbing.

Final Thoughts Helix Soft Mattress Review

If you’re searching for a mattress and are not quite sure what feel that you require, Helix’s quiz and Color Match system might be the key to finding your best sleep with minimal hassle. Their amazing system, which is based on expert sentiment and AI, was designed to better their client’s sleep by providing a better match. Helix Soft Mattress Review

The features of the Helix were thoughtfully constructed to provide options whether you were searching for a mattress that keeps cool all night, if you needed one to support your curves with a thick comfort system, or both! The pocketed coil unit should offer good edge support and movement transfer is at a minimum with their individually-wrapped construction.

I hope that I have given you some notion of what the average consumer can expect from this mattress, but it truly does provide a sensational range of customization with an option for literally every specific need or desire. Your next best sleep may just be a short online quiz away.

Puffy is not just a mattress, it is a cloud you can sleep on. With its optimized design for ultimate comfort and 8x more air flow than standard memory foam mattress brands. This innovative technology allows for optimal cooling as well as ideal pressure relief. Helix Soft Mattress Review

Video Review

Keep on reading below for my full review of the Puffy mattress.

Construction Helix Soft Mattress Review

The Puffy is essentially a memory foam mattress that measures a total of 10 inches. It has a straight forward design with just two foam layers: one of thick memory foam and another of high-density poly foam.

Helix Soft Mattress Review

Helix Soft Mattress Review

Here are the details as listed on their website:

10″ MATTRESS | 2 LAYERS

6.5 – 8.5 Medium-Firm Comfort

4″ Cooling Cloud FoamPuffy’s gel-infused foam improves airflow 8x more than conventional foam mattresses. Provides pressure relief and cooling.

6″ Firm Core Support FoamExceptional support and spinal alignment for healing sleep.

Parts:

Cover – The cover fabric was quite thin, which provides airflow throughout the mattress. It is made out of polyester, which makes for a soft and elastic material.

Comfort Layer – Comprised of 4″ of gel memory foam, the comfort layer here is soft and has a slow response to pressure, which means you are very likely to sink in deep for some intense body contouring. While it’s typical for all-foam beds like this to incorporate a top section of memory foam, this layer particularly is very thick and should bring some satisfying relief to the hips and shoulders. Although memory foam has a bit of a reputation for overheating in the nighttime , Puffy has been able to mitigate this using a gel infusion meant to keep things nice and cool as you sleep.

Support Layer – Composed of 6″ of high-density poly foam, unlike the memory foam layer over it, this part has a quick response to pressure and can be quite firm. The combination of materials has been especially selected to bring targeted relief to the spine. Helix Soft Mattress Review

Firmness

We discovered Puffy’s thick memory foam layer with a gentle, pressure-relieving feel. An absence of any kind of transition foam implies that you’re likely to interact mainly with the high-density poly foam as you quickly sink through the memory foam comfort layer. Because of this, you’re likely to feel as though you are sleeping more “in” this mattress than “on top” of it. Although, if you want an even softer feel, you may want to check out the Puffy Lux, which comes with an extra layer of memory foam for an ultra-plush vibe.

Pressure Map

One other important aspect to consider when buying a new mattress is where pressure points will form while lying on top of it.

To help you visualize where these tension spots could be, I placed a pressure map over the mattress and lied on my back, side, and stomach. You may see the results on the chart where pressure is represented from blue (low pressure) to red (high pressure).

Puffy-Mattress-Pressure-Map

BackLying on my back, I could really feel myself sinking into the mattress, together with the memory foam in the top layer working to contour to my own body and fill in the space at my lumbar region. While this led to some great pressure relief in this position, it did make it difficult to move around and change positions.

Side – Rolling on my side, I felt some pressure relief. I’m not overly surprised by this as side sleepers tend to go for softer mattresses which provide cushiony support to the shoulders and hips, common problem areas for people who sleep in their sides.

Stomach – While the thick memory foam comfort layer is a big win for side sleepers, it’s a bit of a mixed bag for stomach sleepers who usually opt for firmer structures that keep the spine in an even alignment. Here, I could feel my hips sinking out of line with my shoulders, which caused some discomfort in this position.

Motion Transfer

Next up, let us take a peek at the Puffy’s motion transfer, or the amount of disturbance detectable from one side of the mattress into another.

To illustrate this motion transfer, I dropped a 10lb. steel ball from heights of 4 inches, 8 inches and 12 inches and measured the disturbance it generated: the bigger the lines, the bigger the disturbance.

FYI: Every drop is meant to symbolize another movement you’re most likely to encounter in bed, from tossing and turning (4″) to getting out of bed (8″) all the way to full on jumping (12″).

Puffy-Motion-Transfer

These are really quite interesting motion transfer results. You’ll notice a small spike in first movement across the drops that quickly dissipates, which I would attribute to the thick memory foam comfort layer. This material is great at absorbing and dampening motion, making it so you are not likely to be too disturbed by your partner’s tossing and turning in the evening.

Sinkage Test

While purchasing a new mattress}, most people wish to know whether they will feel like they’re sinking “into” the mattress or laying “on top” of it. To visualize this sinkage, I put four balls of varying sizes and densities on the mattress and quantified how much they compressed the surface.

Puffy-Sinkage

6 lb medicine ball: 1.5 inches of sinkage.
10 lb steel ball: 2.5 inches of sinkage.
50 lb medicine ball: 4.5 inches of sinkage.
100 lb medicine ball: 7 inches of sinkage.

This tells me is that you are likely to sink in deeply through the foam layers within this mattress, resulting in a stuck-in-the-bed type feel that’ll make it a bit tricky to change positionsHelix Soft Mattress Review

Edge Support

The edge support on the Puffy mattress will feel stable and make a solid, edge to edge usable sleep foundation. The dense base foam coupled with the supportive memory foam should create a very strong perimeter. Sleeping on this mattress you are able to sense a consistent feel across the entire surface without having a “rolling out of the bed” feel. As far as sitting on the edge goes, you will feel some support.

101 Night Sleep Trial and Guarantee

The Puffy mattress includes a 101 night sleep trial period. This trial period should give you more than enough time to try this bed out. Giving you and your body roughly three months to adjust to the new and improved feel of your memory foam mattress. It’s good to be aware that you should make the most of really testing this mattress in this time period. Anytime you get a brand new mattress your body needs several weeks to even months to fully adjust. If for any reason you reach the end of your trial period and it’s not a good fit, Puffy will work with you to return and refund your purchase.

This mattress comes with a lifetime warranty which goes above and beyond what the typical warranty for the mattress business is. This warranty shows that Puffy really backs their product. Covering any abnormal defects or manufacturing mistakes. Minus the typical wear and tear of a mattress. This provides consumers with the confidence that this is a mattress that the business will stand behind.

Puffy Mattress Sleep Temperature?

The Puffy mattress incorporates cooling technology in each material of the mattress. The upper layer of memory foam is a patent-pending cooling cloud foam which uses conduction and convection to dissipate heat and keep it away from the body. Additionally,a it is infused with gel that increases the airflow 8x more than conventional foam mattresses.

The base foam is dense and supportive to make a solid base that will not let you sink into the mattress and also keep you closer to the surface at which less heat will build around the body. The cover is also breathable to aid in keeping cool. All this allows for your mattress to maintain an perfect temperature whilst sleeping.

Is The Puffy Mattress Right For You?

PROS

First of all, I’d say this mattress could make an excellent pick for side sleepers as the thick comfort layer works to relieve tension at the shoulders and hips.

Also note that the Puffy evokes a traditional memory foam feel, so could be good for anybody with a penchant for the material. Helix Soft Mattress Review

And finally, this is one soft mattress, therefore could do wonders for anyone seeking a gentle, calming structure.

CONS

While the memory foam is a big selling point of the mattress, it does make things a little uncomfortable for strict stomach sleepers who may discover that it pushes their hips out of alignment with their shoulders.

Additionally, it contributes to a structure that does not have very much bounce, which might be a detractor for people in need of buoyant support.

Final Thoughts On The Puffy Mattress Helix Soft Mattress Review

The Puffy mattress is a great choice for everyone who are looking to receive all the benefits of a foam mattress without overpaying. The simple design makes it a classic. This mattress is covered in a removable cover that can be unzipped and washed when needed. The top is soft and pliable and fits well to the mattress. It has a very appropriate and aesthetically pleasing cloud pattern that really adds to the appearance. The side panels are a dark grey durable cloth that compliment the mattress as well. Helix Soft Mattress Review

Unlike the traditional foam mattresses, this one will stay cool and will cradle you fairly well and will provide good pressure relief. Puffy is extremely sturdy and contains motion isolation that makes it suitable for all different kinds of sleepers. Although, I’d like to say this mattress is an excellent pick for side sleepers because the thick relaxation layer works to relieve strain in the shoulders and hips. In addition, the mattress offers proper body support and is a fantastic selection for all people who suffer from back pain or joint pain. Helix Soft Mattress Review
