Helix Sleep markets hybrid mattresses made with polyfoam comfort systems, dual-layer covers, and pocketed coil support cores reinforced with polyfoam base layers. Helix Sleep Vs Tempurpedic

Helix Sleep gives you complete mattress customization. Customers are requested to complete a survey that discusses their height, weight, firmness preferences, sleep position, and other options. Then based on these results, Helix Sleep will recommend one of the following 6 mattress models; each individual option provides a unique combination of support and firmness:

  • Helix Sunset: ‘Soft’ firmness, targeted cushioning, and balanced support
  • Helix Moonlight: ‘Soft’ firmness, moderate cushioning, and extra support
  • Helix Midnight: ‘Medium’ firmness, targeted cushioning, and balanced support
  • Helix Dusk: ‘Medium’ firmness, moderate cushioning, and additional support
  • Helix Twilight: ‘Firm’ firmness, targeted cushioning, and balanced support
  • Helix Dawn: ‘Firm’ firmness, moderate cushioning, and additional support

Helix Sleep Vs Tempurpedic

Helix Sleep mattresses that have targeted cushioning conform closely, making them optimal for side sleepers. While those that have moderate cushioning don’t conform as much and are ideal for pretty much all sleep positions. Lighter people may feel more comfortable on models with balanced support, while people who weigh 130 lbs or more tend to prefer the variants with extra support.

Helix Sleep also markets two models with dual-firmness, the Helix Dual Balanced (with targeted cushioning and balanced support) and the Helix Dual Extra (with moderate cushioning and extra support). Both these mattresses have one ‘Soft’ side and one ‘Firm’ side, making them suitable for couples with different preferences. Last, the Helix Nightfall is a hybrid developed for larger, heavier individuals. This variant has an additional layer of memory foam for optimum support.

My review of Helix Sleep mattresses found that the customizable selection conforms to sleepers with a wide assortment of firmness preferences and body types. The mattresses also provide strong edge support, isolate movement well, and create less noise than the normal hybrid. Helix Sleep Vs Tempurpedic

Construction Helix Sleep Vs Tempurpedic

All 9 of the different iterations of the mattress will differ slightly in construction, but for 6 of the 9 variants, the construction should be quite similar. The 6 core models (listed above) are 10 inches tall, made up of 6 inches of individually wrapped coils and 4 inches of foam.

Helix mattresses differ in firmness and density based on the foams used in order to get more/less support and more/less firmness. The 4 different foams utilized within Helix mattresses are high-grade polyurethane foam, memory foam, Helix Dynamic Foam, and a DuraDense Foam (aka support foam). Not all the models have all of the foams – some just have three of the four – but it really won’t matter much for the buyer. The foams are just levers that Helix Sleep can pull in order to offer nine different versions (and hopefully have a mattress for everybody). Helix Sleep Vs Tempurpedic

Below, I briefly discuss the construction (materials and quality) of your typical Helix mattress, the Helix Midnight.

helix-midnight-construction

Cover – Originally, all Helix mattresses come with exactly the same cover, made of 100 percent polyester. I found it to be stretchy and thin, allowing for some great breathability. However, if you would like something more luxurious, you can choose to swap out the regular cover for the UltraCool one, which is composed of a phase-change material to regulate temperature.

Comfort Layer – Up top, you will discover a heavy layer of memory foam. This type of foam has a slow response to pressure, which means you’re likely to encounter some satisfying body shaping. While it might seem odd for a purportedly medium firm bed to incorporate a memory foam comfort layer, it’s important to remember that the feeling of deep sinkage doesn’t always translate to softness; in actuality, most of the time it produces quite a firm feel.

Transition Layer – After getting past the comfort layer, you’ll find a transition layer of poly foam. This layer of foam works to curb the sinkage of the memory foam and set a supportive, medium firm feeling as you reach the individually wrapped coils below.

Support Layer – The bulk of the mattress is made up of this segment of individually wrapped coils. This system brings a supportive lift to the construction, working to put the sleeper “on top” of the bed, as opposed to “in it”. Because these coils are individually wrapped, they’re also going to give additional breathability as air flows through the spaces in the coils.

Base Layer – Lastly, you’ll discover a thin segment of high-density poly foam. This layer does not really affect the feel of the mattress too much, functioning mostly to give the individually wrapped coils something off of which to react.

Firmness and Support

After taking a look at the construction of the Helix mattresses, let’s chat about their varying firmness levels and feels.

helix-mattress-firmness-and-support-scale

The firmness of the Helix is going to vary widely depending on the variant you select. The Helix Midnight and Dusk, have medium firmness levels, which tends to be very versatile and thus best-selling. If you have more specific requirements, however, Helix Sleep would be happy to oblige you with more choices.

Lying down on the Helix Midnight, the memory foam layer is soft and produces some quality body contouring, while the other materials in the Midnight work to control this and create an overall firmer structure. The firmer support foams and pocketed coils also assist with re-positioning.

For back sleepers, there is enough good comfort material in the Helix Midnight to conform to your lumbar while supporting your whole upper spine in a neutral position. For heavier buyers or those who prefer a firmer mattress, there are 2 more choices for you in the Helix Dawn and Helix Twilight variants.

Most side sleepers will feel perfectly comfy on the Midnight, however, if you’re wanting a bit less pressure while still going with a flexible medium firmness, you may decide to take a look at the Helix Dusk, which utilizes a body-conforming latex-alternative foam that’s breathable and gives the surface a little bit of bounce.

Side sleepers typically have to be more mindful of pressure because they sleep with most of their weight on a tinier area. Those who are smaller than average or people looking for lots of pressure relief may want to stay with the plusher variants.

Those who sleep on their stomach should feel comfortable in the Midnight, particularly if this isn’t their primary position or they tend to change things up a lot. Firmer mattresses might be preferable for exclusive tummy sleepers so that they can ensure their hips don’t dip and over-arch their back.

Lastly, Helix Sleep recommends Helix for sleepers up to 350 pounds or couples that weigh a maximum of 250 lbs each. In the event you or your spouse are significantly bigger than average, the company has also created a bed called the Nightfall that’s created to accommodate a combined weight of 1000 pounds.

Couples with different body types or tastes may also select a dual comfort variant that pairs Firm with Plush.

Keep in mind that if neither of these options feel right, you can always check out the 4 other variants in the new collection: the Sunset (plush, softer than the Moonlight), Dusk (moderate feel, a little firmer compared to the Midnight), Twilight (firm, made for side sleepers), or Dawn (the firmest variant in the collection).

Motion Transfer

Next up, let’s talk about motion transfer, or the amount of disturbance that is detectable from one side of the mattress to the other. While this is going to be crucial for many sleepers, those who doze with a spouse may find it particularly interesting as it’ll show just how bothered you will be by your partner’s nighttime movements. Helix Sleep Vs Tempurpedic

Based on my observation, Helix exceeds expectations for hybrids in this space due to the amount and quality of foam it incorporates, as well as the individually wrapped coils that help trap motion at its source. If you’re a light sleeper worried that motion from the opposite side of the bed will wake you, then you shouldn’t have a lot of concern with this hybrid. I would say that all of the Helix mattresses would be a good choice for couples.

Sinkage

While purchasing a new mattress, the majority of people wish to know whether they’ll feel like they’re sinking “into” the mattress or laying “on top” of it.

While you may encounter some immediate sinkage in the soft foam on top, by the time you sink through these layers, you are going to reach the individually-wrapped coils and find fantastic support. This combo will interest a wide assortment of individuals, but will satisfy stomach and back sleepers in particular.

Edge Support

Though I do feel the foam collapse as I sit near the edge of the mattress, the individually-wrapped coils prevent the mattress from compressing a lot beyond that. I feel very secure seated on the bed.

In my view, Helix mattresses are well above average when it comes to edge support compared to other bed-in-a-box brands, and this is because of their freshly updated edges containing reinforcement in the coil unit. There can be some compression in the comfort foams when you sit with all your weight on the side, but laying on the side should feel comfortable and safe. Couples who need more space to stretch out typically appreciate stronger edges.

Laying down, I also feel like I could get near the edge of the mattress without feeling like I will roll off or be ejected from the bed. Overall, I think that the Helix mattress has nice edge support.

100 Night Sleep Trial

One of the best features of buying a bed-in-a-box online is the sleep trials they typically come with. Helix Sleep is no different. You customize the mattress that’s meant for you, place your order, and within 2 weeks, it is delivered to your door. From the moment you click to purchase the mattress, you have 100 nights to check it out (minus the time for delivery, so it’s more like 90 nights). If it isn’t perfect, you can return it free, and receive a full refund.

Should you return the mattress, it is not resold or restocked. Actually, Helix locates a local place to donate it. When there’s no way Helix can find a way to donate your returned mattress, it is recycled instead. Helix Sleep Vs Tempurpedic

Helix Warranty

The Helix Mattress includes an amazing 10-year warranty that covers flaws, but it comes with some limitations, exceptions, while the burden of proof is on the purchaser (like most guarantees ). Of course, you should be the original owner of the mattress to use the warranty, and you need to be sure you keep your receipt as proof of purchase.

As long as you follow all Helix’s expectations for use, your warranty should be valid. That means you will need to use a suitable base (no adjustable bed frames or slats more than 4 inches apart) and that you don’t use the Helix improperly – no jumping on it!

If your mattress begins to have an indentation of 1″ or longer, something that usually happens when low-density foams break down, then you could qualify for a replacement or repair of your Helix.

What’s The Best Way To Care For Your Helix?

Helix mattresses need no turning, but it’s recommended that you rotate the mattress possibly once or twice a year to prevent it from wearing down from excessive sagging.

For routine cleaning, it is suggested to use cold water with gentle dish detergent to clean any stains or dirt. Be sure to clean using soft circular motions, instead of rubbing.
