Helix Sleep sells hybrid mattresses manufactured with dual-layer covers, polyfoam comfort systems, and pocketed coil support cores reinforced using polyfoam base layers. Helix Sleep Video

Helix Sleep offers complete mattress customization. Customers are asked to fill out a questionnaire that asks for their weight, height, sleep position, firmness preferences, and other elements. Based on these answers, Helix Sleep will recommend one of the following 6 mattress options; each respective model offers a one-of-a-kind combination of support and firmness:

  • Helix Sunset: ‘Soft’ firmness, targeted cushioning, and balanced support
  • Helix Moonlight: ‘Soft’ firmness, moderate cushioning, and additional support
  • Helix Midnight: ‘Medium’ firmness, targeted cushioning, and balanced support
  • Helix Dusk: ‘Medium’ firmness, moderate cushioning, and extra support
  • Helix Twilight: ‘Firm’ firmness, targeted cushioning, and balanced support
  • Helix Dawn: ‘Firm’ firmness, moderate cushioning, and additional support

Helix Sleep hybrids that have targeted cushioning conform closely, making them ideal for side sleepers. While mattresses with moderate cushioning don’t conform as much and are suitable for all sleep positions. Lighter men and women may feel more comfortable on models with balanced support, while individuals who weigh 130 pounds or more tend to favor the variants with extra support.

Helix Sleep also offers two variants with dual-firmness, the Helix Dual Balanced (with targeted cushioning and balanced support) and the Helix Dual Extra (with additional support and moderate cushioning). Both of these models have one ‘Firm’ side and one ‘Soft’ side, which makes them great for couples with different preferences. Last, the Helix Nightfall is a hybrid developed for bigger, heavier individuals. This mattress has an additional layer of memory foam for maximum support.

My review of Helix Sleep mattresses found that the customizable selection accommodates sleepers with a large range of body types and firmness preferences. The mattresses also provide strong edge support, isolate movement nicely, and create less noise than the normal hybrid. Helix Sleep Video

Construction Helix Sleep Video

All nine of the various iterations of this mattress will differ slightly in construction, but for 6 of the 9 models, the construction will be fairly similar. The six core models (listed above) are 10 inches tall, composed of 6 inches of pocketed coils and 4 inches of foam.

Helix mattresses vary in firmness and density based on the foams utilized in order to get more/less firmness and more/less support. The four unique foams used within Helix mattresses are memory foam, high-grade polyurethane foam, Helix Dynamic Foam, and a DuraDense Foam (aka support foam). Not all of the beds have all the foams – some just have 3 of the 4 – but it really shouldn’t matter much for the consumer. The foams are just levers that Helix Sleep can pull in order to offer nine unique variants (and supposedly have a mattress for everybody). Helix Sleep Video

Underneath, I quickly talk about the construction (materials and quality) of the average Helix mattress, the Helix Midnight.

Cover – Originally, all Helix mattresses come with exactly the same cover, made of 100% polyester. I thought it to be thin and pliable, allowing for some nice breathability. However, if you would like something more amped up, you can choose to swap out the normal cover for the UltraCool one, which is composed of a phase-change material for heat regulation.

Comfort Layer – On top, you will encounter a thick layer of memory foam. This material has a slow response to pressure, which means you are probably going to encounter some great body contouring. While it might seem strange for a supposedly medium firm mattress to make use of a memory foam comfort layer, it is important to remember that the presence of deep sinkage does not necessarily translate to softness; in fact, oftentimes it gives quite a firm feel.

Transition Layer – After getting past the comfort layer, you will find a transition layer of poly foam. This layer works to curb the sinkage of the comfort layer and establish a supportive, medium firm feel as you hit the individually wrapped coils underneath.

Support Layer – Most of the mattress consists of this segment of individually wrapped coils. This system brings a supportive lift to the construction, working to place the sleeper “on top” of the bed, as opposed to “in it”. Since the coils are wrapped individually, they are also going to encourage additional breathability as air flows in between the spaces in the coils.

Base Layer – Lastly, you will uncover a thin section of high-density poly foam. This segment does not really affect the feel of the bed too much, working mostly to give the individually wrapped coils something off of which to respond.

Firmness and Support

After taking a peek at the construction of the Helix mattresses, let us chat about their varying feels and firmness levels.

helix-mattress-firmness-and-support-scale

The firmness of the Helix will differ widely depending on the variant you pick out. The Helix Midnight and Dusk, have medium firmness levels, which tends to be quite versatile and therefore exceptionally popular. If you have more specific preferences, however, Helix Sleep will be happy to oblige you with more options.

Laying down on the Midnight, the uppermost foam comfort layer feels soft and generates some quality body shaping, while the other materials within the mattress work to control this and create an overall firmer composition. The firmer support foams and pocketed coils also assist with re-positioning.

For those who sleep on their back, there’s just enough good comfort material here to conform to your lumbar while supporting your whole back in a neutral position. For larger buyers or people who want a firmer bed, there are two more choices for you in the Helix Dawn and Helix Twilight variants.

Majority of side sleepers should feel perfectly comfortable on the Midnight, but, if you are wanting a bit less pressure while still sticking with a flexible medium firmness, you might want to check out the Helix Dusk, which utilizes a body-conforming latex-alternative foam that is breathable and gives the surface a little bit of bounce.

Those who sleep on their side typically have to be more mindful of pressure since they sleep with most their weight on a smaller region. Those who are smaller than average or those in the market for lots of pressure relief might want to stick to the plusher models.

Those who sleep on their stomach should feel supported in the Midnight, particularly if this is not their main position or they have a tendency to change things up a lot. Firmer choices might be preferable for exclusive stomach sleepers so that they can ensure their hips don’t dip and over-arch their backbone.

Finally, Helix Sleep recommends Helix mattresses for sleepers up to 350 pounds or couples who weigh up to 250 pounds each. If you or your partner are substantially larger than average, Helix has also produced a bed called the Nightfall that is made to accommodate a total weight of 1000 lbs.

Couples with differing types of bodies or tastes may also pick a dual comfort option that pairs Firm with Plush.

Keep in mind that if none of these models sound right, you can always have a look at the 4 other variants in the new collection: the Sunset (plush, softer than the Moonlight), Dusk (moderate feel, slightly firmer than the Midnight), Twilight (firm, designed for side sleepers), or Dawn (the firmest variant of the bunch).

Motion Transfer

Next up, let us chat about motion transfer, or the amount of disturbance that is detectable from one side of the mattress to the other. While this is going to be crucial for all sleepers, those who doze with a partner may find it especially intriguing as it will illuminate just how bothered you will be by your bed mate’s nighttime movements. Helix Sleep Video

Based on my observation, Helix exceeds expectations for hybrid mattresses in this space because of the quantity and quality of foam it incorporates, as well as the individually wrapped coils which help trap motion at its source. If you are a light sleeper worried that movement from the opposite side of the mattress will wake you, you shouldn’t have much concern with this hybrid. I’d say that any of the Helix mattresses are a good choice for couples.

Sinkage

When buying a brand-new mattress, the majority of people wish to know whether they will feel like they’re sinking “into” the it or lying “on top” of it.

Even though you’re likely to experience a little immediate sinkage from the soft foam on top, by the time you sink through these layers, you are going to reach the individually-wrapped coils and feel fantastic support. This combination will interest a vast range of individuals, but will satisfy back and stomach sleepers in particular.

Edge Support

While I do feel the foam compress as I sit near the edge of the Helix Midnight, the coils stop the mattress from compressing too much beyond that. I feel very secure sitting on the bed.

In my view, Helix mattresses perform above average when it comes to edge support compared to other bed-in-a-box brands, which is because of their newly updated edges containing reinforcement in the coil unit. There can be some compression in the comfort foams when you sit with your entire weight on the side, but lying on the side will feel comfortable and secure. Couples who want more space to stretch out typically appreciate stronger edges.

Lying down, I feel like I could get close to the edge of the mattress without feeling like I’ll roll over or be ejected from the mattress. Overall, I believe the Helix has nice edge support.

100 Night Sleep Trial

Among the best features of buying a bed-in-a-box online is the sleep trials they typically include. Helix is no different. You customize the mattress that’s meant for you, place your order, and within two weeks, it is delivered to your home. From the minute you click to purchase the mattress, you have 100 nights to try it out (minus the time for delivery, so it’s more like 90 nights). If it isn’t what you wanted, you can return it free of charge, and receive a complete refund.

Should you return the mattress, it isn’t resold or restocked. Actually, the company finds a local place to donate it. If there’s no way the company can find a way to donate your returned mattress, they have it recycled instead. Helix Sleep Video

Helix Warranty

Helix Sleep offers an amazing 10-year guarantee that covers defects, but it has a few limitations, exceptions, plus the burden of proof is on the consumer (like most warranties). Of course, you should be the first owner of the Helix to make use of the guarantee, and you will need to be sure you save your receipt as proof of purchase.

As long as you follow all of the manufacturer’s expectations for use, your warranty will be valid. That means you will need to use a proper foundation (no adjustable bed frames or slats more than 4″ apart) and that you don’t use the mattress improperly – no jumping on the bed!

If your mattress begins to show an indentation of 1 inch or more, something that typically happens when low-density foams break down, you could qualify for a replacement or repair of your Helix.

What’s The Best Way To Care For Your Helix?

Helix mattresses need no flipping, but it is recommended that you rotate the mattress perhaps a couple of times a year to keep it from wearing down from excessive sagging.

For routine cleaning, it is advised to use cool water along gentle dish detergent to clean any dirt or stains. Make sure to clean using soft circular movements, instead of rubbing.
