Helix Sleep markets hybrid mattresses manufactured using polyfoam comfort systems, dual-layer covers, and pocketed coil support cores fortified using polyfoam base layers. Helix Sleep Trial

Helix Sleep gives you full mattress customization. Buyers are urged to complete a questionnaire that discusses their weight, height, sleep position, firmness preferences, and other factors. Then based on these results, Helix Sleep will recommend one of the following 6 mattress models; each individual variant provides a one-of-a-kind combination of support and firmness:

  • Helix Sunset: ‘Soft’ firmness, targeted cushioning, and balanced support
  • Helix Moonlight: ‘Soft’ firmness, moderate cushioning, and additional support
  • Helix Midnight: ‘Medium’ firmness, targeted cushioning, and balanced support
  • Helix Dusk: ‘Medium’ firmness, moderate cushioning, and additional support
  • Helix Twilight: ‘Firm’ firmness, targeted cushioning, and balanced support
  • Helix Dawn: ‘Firm’ firmness, moderate cushioning, and additional support

Helix Sleep hybrids with targeted cushioning conform closely, which makes them optimal for those who sleep on their side. While mattresses with moderate cushioning do not conform as much and are suitable for all sleep positions. Lighter people may feel most comfortable on variants with balanced support, while those who weigh 130 pounds or more tend to prefer the models with additional support.

Helix Sleep also markets 2 models with dual-firmness, the Helix Dual Balanced (with targeted cushioning and balanced support) and the Helix Dual Extra (with additional support and moderate cushioning). Both these mattresses have one ‘Soft’ side and one ‘Firm’ side, which makes them ideal for couples with differing preferences. Last, the Helix Nightfall is a hybrid developed for bigger, heavier individuals. This model has an extra layer of memory foam for maximum support.

My review of Helix Sleep mattresses found that the customizable selection conforms to sleepers with a large range of firmness preferences and body types. The mattresses also offer strong edge support, isolate motion transfer nicely, and create less noise than the average hybrid. Helix Sleep Trial

Construction Helix Sleep Trial

All nine of the different iterations of this mattress will differ slightly in construction, but for 6 of the 9 variants, the construction should be rather similar. The 6 core models (listed above) are 10 inches tall, made up of 6 inches of individually wrapped coils and 4 inches of foam.

Helix mattresses differ in density and firmness based upon the foams used in order to get more/less support and more/less firmness. The 4 unique foams utilized within Helix mattresses are memory foam, high-grade polyurethane foam, Helix Dynamic Foam, and a DuraDense Foam (aka support foam). Not all the variants have all the foams – some just have 3 of the 4 – but it really won’t matter much for the purchaser. The foams are just levers that Helix Sleep can pull to be able to offer 9 unique mattresses (and hopefully have a model for everybody). Helix Sleep Trial

Below, I quickly talk about the construction (materials and quality) of the typical Helix mattress, the Helix Midnight.

helix-midnight-construction

Cover – Originally, all Helix mattresses have exactly the same cover, made of 100% polyester. I thought it to be pliable and thin, allowing for some nice breathability. However, if you would like something more amped up, you can elect to swap out the regular cover for the brand’s UltraCool one, which is composed of a phase change material to regulate heat.

Comfort Layer – On top, you will discover a heavy layer of memory foam. This type of foam has a slow reaction to pressure, which means you are probably going to experience some great body contouring. While it might seem odd for a supposedly medium firm bed to feature a memory foam layer, it’s important to remember that the feeling of deep sinkage doesn’t necessarily translate to softness; in actuality, most of the time it gives quite a firm feeling.

Transition Layer – After getting past the memory foam comfort layer, you will discover a transition layer of poly foam. This layer works to curb the sinkage of the comfort layer and establish a supportive, medium firm feeling as you reach the individually wrapped coils below.

Support Layer – The majority of the mattress is made up of this section of individually wrapped coils. This system gives a supportive lift into the construction, working to position the sleeper “on top” of the mattress, instead of “in it”. Because the coils are individually wrapped, they’re also likely to encourage extra breathability as air flows in between the spaces in the coils.

Base Layer – Last but not least, you will uncover a thin segment of high-density poly foam. This section doesn’t affect the feel of the mattress too much, functioning mostly to provide the individually wrapped coils something off of which to react.

Firmness and Support

After having a look at the construction of the Helix mattresses, let us chat about their different feels and firmness levels.

helix-mattress-firmness-and-support-scale

The firmness level of the Helix will differ widely depending on the version you select. The Helix Dusk and Midnight, have moderate firmness levels, which is going to be very versatile and therefore very popular. If you have more specific requirements, however, Helix Sleep would be happy to provide you with more choices.

Laying down on the Helix Midnight, the memory foam layer feels soft and generates some top quality body contouring, while the rest of the materials in the mattress work to counteract this and create an overall firmer composition. The pocketed coils and the firmer support foams also help with re-positioning.

For back sleepers, there’s just enough good comfort material in the Midnight to conform to your lumbar while supporting your whole back in a neutral position. For heavier buyers or people who want a firmer bed, there are 2 more options for you in the Helix Dawn and Helix Twilight variants.

Many side sleepers should feel totally comfy on the Midnight, however, if you’re wanting a bit less pressure while still sticking with a versatile medium firmness, you may want to check out the Helix Dusk, which utilizes a body-conforming latex-alternative foam that is breathable and gives the surface a small bit of bounce.

Those who sleep on their side typically need to be mindful of pressure since they sleep with most of their weight on a tinier area. People who are smaller than average or those in the market for plenty of pressure relief might want to stay with the plusher models.

Those who sleep on their stomach will feel comfortable in the Midnight, particularly if this is not their primary position or they have a tendency to switch things up a lot. Firmer choices might be preferable for exclusive tummy sleepers so they can ensure their hips do not dip and over-arch their back.

Last, the manufacturer suggests Helix mattresses for sleepers around 350 pounds or partners who weigh up to 250 lbs each. If you or your spouse are substantially bigger than average, the company has also produced a mattress called the Nightfall that is constructed to accommodate a total weight of 1000 pounds.

Partners with different body types or preferences may also pick a dual comfort option that pairs Firm with Plush.

Keep in mind that if neither of those options feel right, you can always have a look at the 4 other variants in the newest collection: the Sunset (plush, softer than the Moonlight), Dusk (medium feel, slightly firmer compared to the Midnight), Twilight (firm, made for side sleepers), or Dawn (the firmest option of the bunch).

Motion Transfer

Next up, let us talk about motion transfer, or the amount of activity that’s noticeable from one side of the bed to the other. While this is going to be crucial for many people, those who sleep with a partner may find it particularly interesting as it will show just how bothered you may be by your partner’s nighttime movements. Helix Sleep Trial

Based on my observation, Helix surpasses expectations for hybrids in this space due to the quantity and quality of foam it contains, in addition to the pocketed coils that help keep motion at its source. If you are a light sleeper worried that movement from the other side of the mattress will wake you, then you shouldn’t have much concern with this hybrid. I would say that any of the Helix mattresses are a good choice for couples.

Sinkage

When purchasing a new mattress, most men and women want to know whether they will feel as though they’re sinking “into” the it or lying “on top” of it.

While you’re likely to experience a little immediate sinkage from the uppermost foam layers, when you sink through those layers, you are going to hit the individually-wrapped coils and experience great support. This combo will interest a wide range of sleepers, but will satisfy stomach and back sleepers in particular.

Edge Support

Though I do feel the memory foam compress as I sit close to the edge of the Helix Midnight, the individually-wrapped coils stop the mattress from collapsing too much beyond that. I feel quite secured sitting on the bed.

In my view, Helix mattresses are well above average for edge support compared to other bed-in-a-box brands, which is because of their freshly updated edges that contain reinforcement in the coil unit. There can be some compression at the comfort foams when you sit with your entire weight on the side, but lying on the side will feel comfortable and secure. Partners who need more space to stretch out normally love stronger edges.

Laying down, I feel like I can get close to the edge of the mattress without feeling like I will fall over or be ejected from the mattress. Overall, I think the Helix has nice edge support.

100 Night Sleep Trial

One of the best features of purchasing a bed-in-a-box online is the sleep trials that they usually include. Helix Mattress is not any different. You customize the mattress that’s meant for you, place your order, and within two weeks, it is delivered to your door. From the minute you click to buy the mattress, you’ve got 100 nights to try it out (minus the time for delivery, so it’s more like 90 nights). If it is not ideal, you can return it for free, and get a full refund.

Should you return the mattress, it is not resold or restocked. In fact, the company does its best to locate a local place to donate it. If there’s no way the company can find a way to donate your returned mattress, it’s recycled instead. Helix Sleep Trial

Helix Warranty

Helix Sleep offers a generous 10-year guarantee that covers defects, but it comes with limitations, exceptions, while the burden of proof is on the customer (like most warranties). Of course, you should be the first owner of the mattress to make use of the guarantee, and you will need to be sure that you keep your receipt as proof of purchase.

Provided that you follow all the manufacturer’s expectations for use, your warranty will be valid. That means you will need to use a proper base (no adjustable bed frames or slats more than 4 inches apart) and you don’t use the mattress improperly – no jumping on the bed!

If your Helix begins to have an indentation of 1″ or longer, something that typically happens when low-density foams break down, you could be eligible for a repair or replacement of your mattress.

What’s The Best Way To Care For Your Helix?

Helix mattresses require no flipping, but it is recommended that you rotate the mattress perhaps a couple of times a year to prevent it from wearing down from excess sagging.

For routine cleanup, it is advised to use cold water with gentle dish soap to clean any stains or dirt. Be sure to wash using gentle circular movements, rather than rubbing.
