Helix Sleep sells hybrid mattresses made with dual-layer covers, polyfoam comfort systems, and pocketed coil support cores enhanced with polyfoam base layers. Helix Sleep Pillow Review

Helix Sleep gives you complete mattress customization. Buyers are asked to complete a survey that discusses their weight, height, firmness preferences, sleep position, and other factors. Based on these answers, Helix Sleep will recommend one of the following six mattress options; each respective variant offers a unique combination of firmness and support:

  • Helix Sunset: ‘Soft’ firmness, targeted cushioning, and balanced support
  • Helix Moonlight: ‘Soft’ firmness, moderate cushioning, and extra support
  • Helix Midnight: ‘Medium’ firmness, targeted cushioning, and balanced support
  • Helix Dusk: ‘Medium’ firmness, moderate cushioning, and additional support
  • Helix Twilight: ‘Firm’ firmness, targeted cushioning, and balanced support
  • Helix Dawn: ‘Firm’ firmness, moderate cushioning, and additional support

Helix Sleep Pillow Review

Helix Sleep hybrids that have targeted cushioning conform closely, which makes them optimal for side sleepers. While those that have moderate cushioning don’t conform as much and are suitable for pretty much all sleep positions. Lighter men and women may feel more comfy on variants with balanced support, while those who weigh 130 lbs or more often favor the models with extra support.

Helix Sleep also offers two models with dual-firmness, the Helix Dual Balanced (with targeted cushioning and balanced support) and the Helix Dual Extra (with moderate cushioning and additional support). Both of these mattresses have one ‘Firm’ side and one ‘Soft’ side, making them great for couples with different preferences. Last, the Helix Nightfall is a hybrid developed for bigger, heavier people. This variant has an additional layer of memory foam for maximum support.

My review of Helix Sleep mattresses discovered that the customizable aspect accommodates sleepers with a wide assortment of body types and firmness preferences. The mattresses also offer strong edge support, isolate motion transfer nicely, and produce less noise than the average hybrid. Helix Sleep Pillow Review

Construction Helix Sleep Pillow Review

All nine of the different iterations of the mattress will differ slightly in construction, but for 6 of the 9 models, the construction will be quite similar. The 6 core variants (listed above) are 10 inches tall, composed of 6 inches of individually wrapped coils and 4 inches of foam.

Helix mattresses differ in density and firmness based upon the foams used in order to achieve more/less support and more/less firmness. The four different foams used within Helix mattresses are memory foam, high-grade polyurethane foam, Helix Dynamic Foam, and a DuraDense Foam (aka support foam). Not all of the variants have all of the foams – some just have 3 of the 4 – but it really shouldn’t matter much for the consumer. The foams are just levers that Helix Sleep can pull to be able to offer nine unique variants (and hopefully have a mattress for everybody). Helix Sleep Pillow Review

Below, I briefly talk about the construction (materials and quality) of your average Helix mattress, the Helix Midnight.

helix-midnight-construction

Cover – Initially, all Helix mattresses have the same cover, made of 100% polyester. I thought it to be thin and stretchy, allowing for some nice breathability. But, if you would like something more luxurious, you can opt to swap out the standard cover for the brand’s UltraCool one, which is made up of a phase-change material for temperature regulation.

Comfort Layer – On top, you’ll encounter a heavy layer of memory foam. This type of foam has a slow reaction to pressure, which means you are probably going to encounter some great body shaping. Even though it may seem odd for a purportedly medium firmness bed to feature a memory foam comfort layer, it is crucial to remember that the feeling of deep sinkage doesn’t necessarily translate to softness; in fact, most of the time it gives quite a firm feel.

Transition Layer – After sinking through the memory foam comfort layer, you’ll find a transition layer of poly foam. This layer works to curb the sinkage of the comfort layer and establish a supportive, medium firm feel as you hit the pocketed coils underneath.

Support Layer – Most of the mattress is made up of this section of pocketed coils. This system gives a supportive lift into the construction, working to put the sleeper “on top” of the mattress, instead of “in it”. Since these coils are wrapped individually, they’re also going to give extra breathability as air flows through the spaces in the coils.

Base Layer – Last, you’ll find a thin segment of high-density poly foam. This layer doesn’t really affect the feel of the mattress too much, working mostly to provide the individually wrapped coils something off of which to respond.

Firmness and Support

After taking a peek at the construction of the Helix mattresses, let’s discuss their varying firmness levels and feels.

helix-mattress-firmness-and-support-scale

The firmness level of the Helix is going to vary widely depending on the model you choose. The Helix Dusk and Midnight, have medium firmness levels, which is going to be very versatile and therefore exceptionally popular. If you have more specific needs, however, Helix Sleep would be happy to oblige you with more options.

Lying down on the Helix Midnight, the memory foam comfort layer feels soft and generates some quality body shaping, while the rest of the materials in the mattress work to counteract this and make an overall firmer composition. The pocketed coils and the firmer support foams also assist with re-positioning.

For those who sleep on their back, there is enough good comfort material in the Helix Midnight to conform to your lumbar while supporting your whole upper spine in a neutral position. For heavier buyers or those who want a firmer bed, there are two more choices for you in the Helix Dawn and Helix Twilight variants.

Many side sleepers should feel perfectly comfy on the Midnight, however, if you’re wanting a bit less pressure while still going with a flexible medium firmness, you may want to check out the Helix Dusk, which utilizes a body-conforming latex-alternative foam that’s breathable and provides the surface a small bit of bounce.

Those who sleep on their side typically need to be mindful of pressure because they sleep with most of their weight on a tinier area. Those who are smaller than average or those looking for a lot of pressure relief may want to stay with the plusher models.

Those who sleep on their stomach should feel comfortable in the Midnight, especially if this isn’t their primary position or they tend to change things up a lot. Firmer choices may be preferable for exclusive stomach sleepers so that they can make sure their hips do not dip and over-arch their backbone.

Finally, Helix Sleep suggests Helix mattresses for sleepers around 350 pounds or couples that weigh up to 250 pounds each. In the event you or your spouse are substantially larger than average, Helix has also created a bed called the Nightfall that’s made to accommodate a combined weight of 1000 lbs.

Partners with differing types of bodies or tastes may also select a dual comfort model that pairs Firm with Plush.

Keep in mind that if none of those options seem quite right, you may always have a look at the four other variants in the newest collection: the Sunset (plush, softer compared to the Moonlight), Dusk (medium feel, a little firmer than the Midnight), Twilight (firm, made for side sleepers), or Dawn (the firmest variant in the collection).

Motion Transfer

Now, let’s chat about motion transfer, or the amount of activity that’s detectable from one side of the mattress to the other. While this is going to be significant for all people, those who sleep with a partner may find it particularly intriguing as it’ll illuminate just how bothered you will be by your partner’s nighttime movements. Helix Sleep Pillow Review

According to my research, Helix exceeds expectations for hybrids in this space due to the amount and quality of foam it incorporates, in addition to the pocketed coils which help keep motion at its source. If you are a light sleeper worried that motion from the opposite side of the bed will wake you, you should not have a lot of concern with this mattress. I’d say that any of the Helix mattresses are a good choice for couples.

Sinkage

While purchasing a new mattress, the majority of men and women want to know whether they will feel as though they are sinking “into” the mattress or laying “on top” of it.

While you’re likely to experience some immediate sinkage in the uppermost foam layers, by the time you sink through these layers, you’ll find the individually-wrapped coils and find great support. This combination will appeal to a wide range of sleepers, but will suit back and stomach sleepers the most.

Edge Support

While I do feel the foam collapse as I sit near the edge of the Helix Midnight, the pocketed coils prevent the mattress from collapsing too much . I feel very secure seated on the mattress.

In my opinion, Helix mattresses are well above average when it comes to edge support in comparison to other bed-in-a-box brands, and this is because of their freshly updated edges containing reinforcement in the coil system. There may be some compression at the comfort foams when you sit with your entire weight on the side, but laying on the side will feel comfy and safe. Partners who need more space to stretch out normally love strong edges.

Laying down, I also feel like I could get near the edge of the mattress without feeling like I’ll fall over or be ejected from the bed. Overall, I think that the Helix has great edge support.

100 Night Sleep Trial

One of the best features of purchasing a bed-in-a-box online is the sleep trials that they typically come with. Helix is no different. You create the mattress that’s intended for you, place your order, and in 2 weeks, it’s delivered to your door. From the moment you click to order the mattress, you’ve got 100 nights to test it out (minus the time for delivery, so it’s more like 90 nights). If it isn’t perfect, you can return it free of charge, and get a full refund.

Should you return the mattress, it isn’t restocked or resold. Actually, the company does its best to locate a local place to donate it. When there’s no way the company can find a way to donate your returned mattress, it’s recycled instead. Helix Sleep Pillow Review

Helix Warranty

Helix offers a generous 10-year guarantee that covers flaws, but it comes with a few limitations, exceptions, plus the burden of proof is on the customer (like most warranties). Needless to say, you must be the original owner of the mattress to use the warranty, and you will need to be sure you keep your receipt as proof of purchase.

As long as you follow all of the manufacturer’s expectations for use, your warranty should be valid. That means you need to have a suitable base (no adjustable bed frames or slats over 4 inches apart) and that you don’t use the mattress improperly – no jumping on the bed!

If your mattress begins to show an indentation of 1″ or more, which is what typically happens when low-density foams break down, you could qualify for a replacement or repair of your mattress.

What’s The Best Way To Care For Your Helix?

Helix mattresses require no turning, but it is recommended that you rotate the mattress possibly once or twice a year to prevent it from wearing down from excess sagging.

For routine cleaning, it’s advised to use cool water with gentle dish detergent to clean any dirt or stains. Make sure to wash using soft circular movements, rather than rubbing.
