Helix Sleep offers hybrid mattresses manufactured with polyfoam comfort systems, dual-layer covers, and pocketed coil support cores enhanced using polyfoam base layers. Helix Sleep Logo

Helix Sleep gives you complete mattress customization. Purchasers are asked to complete a questionnaire that discusses their height, weight, firmness preferences, sleep position, and other elements. Then based on these answers, Helix Sleep will suggest one of the following 6 mattress models; each individual model provides a unique combination of firmness and support:

  • Helix Sunset: ‘Soft’ firmness, targeted cushioning, and balanced support
  • Helix Moonlight: ‘Soft’ firmness, moderate cushioning, and extra support
  • Helix Midnight: ‘Medium’ firmness, targeted cushioning, and balanced support
  • Helix Dusk: ‘Medium’ firmness, moderate cushioning, and extra support
  • Helix Twilight: ‘Firm’ firmness, targeted cushioning, and balanced support
  • Helix Dawn: ‘Firm’ firmness, moderate cushioning, and extra support

Helix Sleep hybrids that have targeted cushioning conform closely, which makes them perfect for side sleepers. While mattresses with moderate cushioning do not conform as much and are ideal for pretty much all sleep positions. Lighter people may feel most comfortable on variants with balanced support, while people that weigh 130 pounds or more often prefer the models with additional support.

Helix Sleep also markets two variants with dual-firmness, the Helix Dual Balanced (with balanced support and targeted cushioning) and the Helix Dual Extra (with extra support and moderate cushioning). Both of these models have one ‘Firm’ side and one ‘Soft’ side, making them ideal for couples with different preferences. Last, the Helix Nightfall is a hybrid developed for larger, heavier individuals. This variant has an additional layer of memory foam for maximum support.

My review of Helix Sleep mattresses discovered that the customizable aspect conforms to sleepers with a large variety of body types and firmness preferences. The mattresses also have strong edge support, isolate motion transfer well, and create less noise than the normal hybrid. Helix Sleep Logo

Construction Helix Sleep Logo

All nine of the various iterations of the mattress will differ slightly in construction, but for 6 of the 9 variants, the construction should be rather similar. The 6 core variants (listed above) are 10 inches tall, made up of 6 inches of pocketed coils and 4 inches of foam.

Helix mattresses vary in density and firmness based upon the foams used in order to attain more/less support and more/less firmness. The four unique foams used within Helix mattresses are memory foam, high-grade polyurethane foam, Helix Dynamic Foam, and a DuraDense Foam (aka support foam). Not all the beds have all the foams – some only have three of the four – but it really won’t matter much for the buyer. The foams are just levers that Helix Sleep can pull in order to offer 9 unique versions (and hopefully have a mattress for everyone). Helix Sleep Logo

Underneath, I briefly talk about the construction (materials and quality) of the typical Helix mattress, the Helix Midnight.

Cover – Initially, all Helix mattresses come with the same cover, made of 100 percent polyester. I found it to be thin and stretchy, allowing for some wonderful breathability. However, if you prefer something more luxurious, you can choose to swap out the regular cover for the UltraCool one, which is composed of a phase-change fabric to regulate temperature.

Comfort Layer – Up top, you’ll find a thick layer of memory foam. This material has a slow response to pressure, meaning you are probably going to experience some gratifying body contouring. While it might seem odd for a purportedly medium firmness bed to feature a memory foam layer, it is crucial to remember that the presence of deep sinkage does not always translate to softness; in fact, most of the time it generates quite a firm feel.

Transition Layer – After getting past the comfort layer, you’ll discover a transition layer of poly foam. This layer works to suppress the sinkage of the comfort layer and establish a supportive, medium firm feel as you hit the pocketed coils underneath.

Support Layer – The bulk of the mattress consists of this segment of individually wrapped coils. This system gives a supportive lift to the construction, working to put the sleeper “on top” of the bed, instead of “in it”. Because these coils are wrapped individually, they are also likely to allow additional breathability as air flows in between the spaces in the coils.

Base Layer – Last, you will find a thin segment of high-density poly foam. This section does not really affect the feel of the mattress too much, working mostly to provide the pocketed coils something off of which to react.

Firmness and Support

After taking a peek at the construction of the Helix mattresses, let’s chat about their different feels and firmness levels.

The firmness of the Helix is going to vary widely depending on the version you select. The Helix Dusk and Midnight, have medium firmness levels, which tends to be quite versatile and thus best-selling. If you are more particular, however, Helix Sleep would be happy to provide you with more options.

Laying down on the Helix Midnight, the uppermost foam comfort layer feels soft and generates some top quality body shaping, while the other materials in the mattress work to counteract this and create an overall firmer composition. The firmer support foams and individually-wrapped coils also assist with re-positioning.

For back sleepers, there’s just enough good comfort material here to conform to your lumbar while supporting your upper spine in a neutral position. For heavier buyers or those who want a firmer mattress, there are two more choices for you in the Helix Twilight and Helix Dawn models.

Many side sleepers should feel totally comfy on the Midnight, however, if you are needing less pressure while still going with a flexible medium firmness, you might decide to check out the Helix Dusk, which utilizes a body-conforming latex-alternative foam that is breathable and gives the surface a little bit of bounce.

Side sleepers typically need to be more mindful of pressure because they sleep with all of their weight on a smaller region. People who are smaller than average or people looking for plenty of pressure relief may want to stick to the plusher variants.

Those who sleep on their stomach will feel comfortable in the Midnight, especially if this isn’t their main position or they have a tendency to switch things up a lot. Firmer mattresses may be preferable for exclusive tummy sleepers so that they can make sure their hips don’t dip and over-arch their spine.

Lastly, the manufacturer recommends Helix mattresses for sleepers up to 350 lbs or partners that weigh a maximum of 250 pounds each. If you or your partner are significantly bigger than average, the company has also produced a bed called the Nightfall that’s built to accommodate a total weight of 1000 lbs.

Couples with differing body types or tastes may also pick a dual comfort option that combines Firm with Plush.

Keep in mind that if none of those options seem quite right, you could always have a look at the four other variants in the newest collection: the Sunset (plush, softer than the Moonlight), Dusk (medium feel, a little firmer compared to the Midnight), Twilight (firm, made for side sleepers), or Dawn (the firmest variant of the bunch).

Motion Transfer

Now, let us talk about motion transfer, or the amount of disturbance that’s noticeable from 1 side of the mattress to the other. While this will be crucial for all people, those who sleep with a partner may find it especially interesting as it’ll illuminate just how bothered you will be by your partner’s nighttime movements. Helix Sleep Logo

According to my research, Helix exceeds expectations for hybrid mattresses in this space due to the quantity and quality of foam it incorporates, as well as the individually wrapped coils which help trap motion at its source. If you’re a light sleeper worried that movement from the opposite side of the mattress will wake you, you should not have much concern with this hybrid. I would say that any of the Helix mattresses would be a good option for couples.

Sinkage

While buying a brand-new mattress, most individuals want to know whether they’ll feel as though they’re sinking “into” the it or lying “on top” of it.

Even though you are going to experience a little immediate sinkage in the uppermost foam layers, by the time you sink through these layers, you will find the pocketed coils and feel fantastic support. This combination will appeal to a vast assortment of individuals, but will satisfy stomach and back sleepers in particular.

Edge Support

While I do feel the memory foam collapse as I sit close to the edge of the bed, the individually-wrapped coils prevent the mattress from collapsing too much beyond that. I feel very secured sitting on the bed.

In my view, Helix mattresses perform above average when it comes to edge support in comparison to other bed-in-a-box brands, which is because of their newly updated edges that contain reinforcement in the coil unit. There can be a little compression at the comfort foams when you sit with your entire weight on the side, but laying on the side will feel comfy and secure. Partners who need more space to stretch out normally love stronger edges.

Laying down, I feel like I can get close to the edge of the bed without feeling like I’ll fall over or be ejected from the mattress. Overall, I think the Helix has nice edge support.

100 Night Sleep Trial

One of the best features of buying a bed-in-a-box online is the sleep trials that they usually include. Helix Mattress is no different. You create the mattress that’s intended for you, place your order, and in a couple of weeks, it is sent to your home. From the moment you click to purchase the mattress, you have 100 nights to check it out (minus the time for delivery, so it is more like 90 nights). If it is not ideal, you can return it for free, and receive a full refund.

If you do return the mattress, it isn’t restocked or resold. Actually, Helix Sleep locates a local place to donate it. If there’s no way Helix Sleep can find a way to donate your refunded mattress, it’s recycled instead. Helix Sleep Logo

Helix Warranty

Helix offers a generous 10-year guarantee that covers flaws, but it comes with limitations, exceptions, while the burden of proof is on the purchaser (like most warranties). Needless to say, you should be the first owner of the Helix to use the warranty, and you need to be sure that you save your receipt as proof of purchase.

Provided that you follow all Helix’s expectations for use, your warranty is valid. That means you will need to use a suitable foundation (no adjustable bed frames or slats more than 4 inches apart) and that you don’t use the Helix improperly – no jumping on it!

If your Helix starts to have an indentation of 1″ or longer, which is what typically happens when low-density foams break down, you could be eligible for a repair or replacement of your mattress.

What’s The Best Way To Care For Your Helix?

Helix mattresses require no flipping, but it is recommended that you rotate the mattress possibly once or twice a year to keep it from wearing down from excess sagging.

For regular cleaning, it’s advised to use cold water along gentle dish detergent to clean any stains or dirt. Be certain to wash using gentle circular motions, rather than rubbing.
