Helix Sleep sells hybrid mattresses manufactured using dual-layer covers, polyfoam comfort systems, and pocketed coil support cores fortified using polyfoam base layers. Helix Sleep Facebook

Helix Sleep allows complete mattress customization. Customers are asked to fill out a questionnaire that discusses their weight, height, firmness preferences, sleep position, and other options. Then based on these results, Helix Sleep will suggest one of the following 6 mattress variants; each respective model provides a one-of-a-kind combination of support and firmness:

  • Helix Sunset: ‘Soft’ firmness, targeted cushioning, and balanced support
  • Helix Moonlight: ‘Soft’ firmness, moderate cushioning, and extra support
  • Helix Midnight: ‘Medium’ firmness, targeted cushioning, and balanced support
  • Helix Dusk: ‘Medium’ firmness, moderate cushioning, and additional support
  • Helix Twilight: ‘Firm’ firmness, targeted cushioning, and balanced support
  • Helix Dawn: ‘Firm’ firmness, moderate cushioning, and extra support

Helix Sleep hybrids with targeted cushioning conform closely, which makes them optimal for side sleepers. While those with moderate cushioning do not conform as much and are suitable for all sleep positions. Lighter men and women may feel most comfy on models with balanced support, while those who weigh 130 lbs or more tend to prefer the models with extra support.

Helix Sleep also markets 2 mattresses with dual-firmness, the Helix Dual Balanced (with targeted cushioning and balanced support) and the Helix Dual Extra (with moderate cushioning and additional support). Both these mattresses have one ‘Firm’ side and one ‘Soft’ side, making them ideal for couples with different preferences. Last, the Helix Nightfall is a hybrid designed for larger, heavier individuals. This model has an extra layer of memory foam for maximum support.

My review of Helix Sleep mattresses discovered that the customizable selection conforms to sleepers with a wide variety of body types and firmness preferences. The mattresses also have strong edge support, isolate motion transfer nicely, and create less noise than the average hybrid. Helix Sleep Facebook

Construction Helix Sleep Facebook

All 9 of the various iterations of this mattress will differ slightly in construction, but for 6 of the 9 variants, the construction will be rather similar. The six core variants (listed above) are 10 inches tall, made up of 6 inches of pocketed coils and 4 inches of foam.

Helix mattresses differ in firmness and density depending upon the foams utilized in order to achieve more/less support and more/less firmness. The 4 unique foams utilized within Helix mattresses are high-grade polyurethane foam, memory foam, Helix Dynamic Foam, and a DuraDense Foam (aka support foam). Not all the variants have all the foams – some just have three of the four – but it really won’t matter much for the purchaser. The foams are merely levers that Helix Sleep can pull to be able to offer nine different versions (and hopefully have a model for everyone). Helix Sleep Facebook

Underneath, I quickly talk about the construction (materials and quality) of your average Helix mattress, the Helix Midnight.

Cover – Originally, all Helix mattresses come with exactly the same cover, made of 100% polyester. I thought it to be stretchy and thin, allowing for some wonderful breathability. But, if you want something more luxurious, you can opt to swap out the normal cover for the UltraCool one, which is made up of a phase-change material for heat regulation.

Comfort Layer – Up top, you’ll find a thick layer of memory foam. This type of foam has a slow response to pressure, meaning you are likely to encounter some great body shaping. Even though it may seem odd for a supposedly medium firm bed to feature a memory foam layer, it’s crucial to remember that the presence of deep sinkage does not necessarily translate to softness; in fact, most of the time it produces quite a firm feeling.

Transition Layer – After sinking through the comfort layer, you will find a transition layer of poly foam. This layer of foam works to curb the sinkage of the comfort layer and establish a supportive, medium firm feel as you hit the pocketed coils below.

Support Layer – The majority of the mattress consists of this section of individually wrapped coils. This system brings a supportive lift to the construction, working to position the sleeper “on top” of the bed, as opposed to “in it”. Because these coils are wrapped individually, they are also going to allow extra breathability as air flows through the spaces in the coils.

Base Layer – Lastly, you’ll uncover a thin segment of high-density poly foam. This section doesn’t really affect the feel of the mattress too much, functioning mostly to give the individually wrapped coils something off of which to react.

Firmness and Support

After taking a look at the construction of the Helix mattresses, let’s chat about their different feels and firmness levels.

helix-mattress-firmness-and-support-scale

The firmness level of the Helix will vary widely depending on which version you choose. The Helix Dusk and Midnight, have moderate firmness levels, which tends to be very versatile and thus very popular. If you are more particular, however, Helix Sleep would be happy to provide you with more choices.

Laying down on the Helix Midnight, the uppermost foam layer feels soft and generates some quality body contouring, while the rest of the materials within the mattress work to counteract this and create an overall firmer structure. The firmer support foams and pocketed coils also help with re-positioning.

For those who sleep on their back, there is enough good comfort material in the Midnight to conform to your lower spine while supporting your upper spine in a neutral position. For heavier sleepers or those who want a firmer bed, there are two more options for you in the Helix Twilight and Helix Dawn variants.

Most side sleepers should feel perfectly comfy on the Midnight, but, if you’re needing less pressure while still sticking with a versatile medium firmness, you may decide to take a look at the Helix Dusk, which utilizes a body-conforming latex-alternative foam that is breathable and gives the surface a little bit of bounce.

Those who sleep on their side typically need to be more mindful of pressure because they sleep with all of their weight on a smaller area. People who are smaller than average or people in the market for lots of pressure relief might want to stay with the plusher variants.

Those who sleep on their stomach should feel supported in the Midnight, especially if this is not their primary position or they tend to change things up a lot. Firmer choices might be preferable for exclusive stomach sleepers so they can make sure their hips do not dip and over-arch their backbone.

Last, the manufacturer suggests Helix for sleepers around 350 pounds or partners that weigh a maximum of 250 lbs each. In the event you or your partner are substantially larger than average, the company has also created a bed called the Nightfall that’s made to accommodate a total weight of 1000 pounds.

Partners with different types of bodies or tastes can also select a dual comfort model that pairs Firm with Plush.

Bear in mind that if neither of these options sound quite right, you may always have a look at the 4 other mattresses in the new collection: the Sunset (plush, softer than the Moonlight), Dusk (moderate feel, slightly firmer compared to the Midnight), Twilight (firm, designed for side sleepers), or Dawn (the firmest option of the bunch).

Motion Transfer

Next up, let’s talk about motion transfer, or the amount of disturbance that is noticeable from 1 side of the bed to the other. While this is going to be important for many sleepers, those who doze with a partner may find it particularly interesting as it will show just how bothered you’ll be by your partner’s nighttime movements. Helix Sleep Facebook

Based on my observation, Helix surpasses expectations for hybrids in this space because of the quantity and quality of foam it contains, as well as the pocketed coils that help trap motion at its source. If you’re a light sleeper concerned that motion from the opposite side of the bed will bother you, then you should not have much concern with this hybrid. I would say that any of the Helix mattresses are a good choice for couples.

Sinkage

When purchasing a brand-new mattress, most men and women want to know whether they’ll feel like they’re sinking “into” the mattress or lying “on top” of it.

While you may encounter some immediate sinkage from the soft foam at the top, when you sink through those layers, you are going to reach the individually-wrapped coils and feel amazing support. This combination will appeal to a vast assortment of sleepers, but will suit stomach and back sleepers in particular.

Edge Support

While I do feel the foam collapse as I sit near the edge of the Helix Midnight, the coils prevent the mattress from compressing too much . I feel very secure sitting on the mattress.

In my view, Helix mattresses perform above average for edge support compared to other bed-in-a-box brands, and this is due to their recently updated edges that contain reinforcement in the coil system. There may be a little compression in the comfort foams when you sit with all your weight on the side, but lying on the side should feel comfortable and safe. Partners who want more space to stretch out normally love strong edges.

Lying down, I also feel like I could get close to the edge of the mattress without feeling like I will roll off or be ejected from the mattress. Overall, I believe that the Helix mattress has nice edge support.

100 Night Sleep Trial

Among the best features of buying a bed-in-a-box online is the sleep trials that they typically include. Helix is no different. You customize the mattress that is made for you, place your order, and within 2 weeks, it’s delivered to your door. From the minute you click to purchase the mattress, you have 100 nights to check it out (minus the time for delivery, so it’s more like 90 nights). If it isn’t perfect, you can return it free of charge, and receive a full refund.

Should you return the mattress, it isn’t restocked or resold. In fact, Helix Sleep does its best to find a local place to donate it. When there’s no way the company can find a way to donate your refunded mattress, they have it recycled instead. Helix Sleep Facebook

Helix Warranty

The Helix Mattress includes a generous 10-year guarantee that covers defects, but it has some limitations, exceptions, plus the burden of proof is on the consumer (like most guarantees ). Needless to say, you should be the first owner of the mattress to use the warranty, and you will need to be sure you save your receipt as proof of purchase.

Provided that you follow all Helix’s expectations for use, your warranty is valid. That means you will need to use a proper base (no adjustable bed frames or slats over 4 inches apart) and you don’t use the mattress improperly – no jumping on the bed!

If your Helix starts to have an indentation of 1″ or longer, something that usually happens when low-density foams break down, you could qualify for a repair or replacement of your mattress.

What’s The Best Way To Care For Your Helix?

Helix mattresses require no flipping, but it is recommended that you rotate the mattress perhaps once or twice a year to prevent it from wearing down from excess sagging.

For regular cleaning, it is suggested to use cool water along gentle dish detergent to clean any dirt or stains. Make sure to wash using gentle circular movements, instead of rubbing.
