Helix Sleep markets hybrid mattresses made using dual-layer covers, polyfoam comfort systems, and pocketed coil support cores enhanced using polyfoam base layers. Helix Sleep.Com/Talk Radio

Helix Sleep offers full mattress customization. Customers are asked to complete a questionnaire that asks for their weight, height, firmness preferences, sleep position, and other elements. Then based on these results, Helix Sleep will recommend one of the following six mattress options; each respective variant gives a one-of-a-kind combination of firmness and support:

  • Helix Sunset: ‘Soft’ firmness, targeted cushioning, and balanced support
  • Helix Moonlight: ‘Soft’ firmness, moderate cushioning, and additional support
  • Helix Midnight: ‘Medium’ firmness, targeted cushioning, and balanced support
  • Helix Dusk: ‘Medium’ firmness, moderate cushioning, and extra support
  • Helix Twilight: ‘Firm’ firmness, targeted cushioning, and balanced support
  • Helix Dawn: ‘Firm’ firmness, moderate cushioning, and additional support

Helix Sleep hybrids with targeted cushioning conform closely, which makes them optimal for side sleepers. While hybrids with moderate cushioning don’t conform as much and are suitable for all sleep positions. Lighter people may feel more comfy on variants with balanced support, while people that weigh 130 pounds or more tend to favor the models with extra support.

Helix Sleep also markets two models with dual-firmness, the Helix Dual Balanced (with balanced support and targeted cushioning) and the Helix Dual Extra (with moderate cushioning and extra support). Both of these mattresses have one ‘Firm’ side and one ‘Soft’ side, which makes them suitable for couples with differing tastes. Last, the Helix Nightfall is a hybrid designed for bigger, heavier people. This mattress has an extra layer of memory foam for maximum support.

My review of Helix Sleep mattresses found that the customizable selection conforms to sleepers with a wide range of firmness preferences and body types. The mattresses also provide strong edge support, isolate movement nicely, and create less noise than the average hybrid. Helix Sleep.Com/Talk Radio

Construction Helix Sleep.Com/Talk Radio

All nine of the various iterations of the mattress will differ slightly in construction, but for 6 of the 9 variants, the construction should be fairly similar. The 6 core variants (listed above) are 10 inches tall, composed of 6 inches of pocketed coils and 4 inches of foam.

Helix mattresses differ in density and firmness based upon the foams used in order to get more/less firmness and more/less support. The 4 unique foams utilized within Helix mattresses are memory foam, high-grade polyurethane foam, Helix Dynamic Foam, and a DuraDense Foam (aka support foam). Not all the variants have all of the foams – some just have three of the four – but it really shouldn’t matter much for the purchaser. The foams are merely levers that Helix Sleep can pull in order to offer 9 distinct versions (and hopefully have a model for everybody). Helix Sleep.Com/Talk Radio

Underneath, I quickly discuss the construction (materials and quality) of your average Helix mattress, the Helix Midnight.

Cover – Initially, all Helix mattresses have the same cover, made of 100 percent polyester. I thought it to be thin and stretchy, allowing for some great breathability. However, if you want something more lavish, you can elect to swap out the standard cover for the brand’s UltraCool one, which is composed of a phase change material for heat regulation.

Comfort Layer – On top, you’ll discover a thick layer of memory foam. This material has a slow response to pressure, which means you are likely to experience some gratifying body contouring. While it might seem strange for a purportedly medium firmness bed to feature a memory foam comfort layer, it’s crucial to remember that the existence of deep sinkage doesn’t necessarily translate to softness; in fact, most of the time it gives quite a firm feeling.

Transition Layer – After sinking through the memory foam comfort layer, you’ll discover a transition layer of poly foam. This layer of foam works to suppress the sinkage of the memory foam and create a supportive, medium firm feel as you reach the individually wrapped coils underneath.

Support Layer – The majority of the mattress consists of this segment of individually wrapped coils. This system gives a supportive lift to the construction, working to position the sleeper “on top” of the bed, instead of “in it”. Since the coils are individually wrapped, they are also going to give additional breathability as air flows in between the spaces in the coils.

Base Layer – Last but not least, you will uncover a thin segment of high-density poly foam. This segment does not really affect the feel of the mattress too much, functioning mostly to give the individually wrapped coils something off of which to respond.

Firmness and Support

After taking a peek at the construction of the Helix mattresses, let’s discuss their varying feels and firmness levels.

helix-mattress-firmness-and-support-scale

The firmness of the Helix is going to differ widely depending on the variant you choose. The Helix Midnight and Dusk, have moderate firmness levels, which will be very versatile and therefore very popular. If you are more particular, however, Helix Sleep is happy to provide you with more choices.

Laying down on the Helix Midnight, the memory foam comfort layer is soft and generates some quality body contouring, while the other materials in the Midnight work to control this and create an overall firmer structure. The firmer support foams and individually-wrapped coils also assist with re-positioning.

For back sleepers, there’s just enough good comfort material in the Midnight to conform to your lumbar while supporting your upper spine in a neutral position. For heavier sleepers or people who prefer a firmer bed, there are two more options for you in the Helix Twilight and Helix Dawn variants.

Many side sleepers should feel totally comfortable on the Midnight, but, if you’re wanting less pressure while still sticking with a versatile medium firmness, you might decide to check out the Helix Dusk, which uses a body-conforming latex-alternative foam that is breathable and gives the surface a small bit of bounce.

Those who sleep on their side typically need to be more mindful of pressure since they sleep with most their weight on a smaller area. Those who are smaller than average or those in the market for plenty of pressure relief may want to stay with the plusher models.

Those who sleep on their stomach should feel supported in the Midnight, especially if this isn’t their main position or they have a tendency to switch things up a lot. Firmer choices might be preferable for exclusive stomach sleepers so they can make sure their hips don’t dip and over-arch their back.

Last, the manufacturer recommends Helix mattresses for sleepers up to 350 pounds or partners who weigh up to 250 lbs each. In the event you or your spouse are significantly bigger than average, the company has also produced a bed called the Nightfall that’s constructed to accommodate a combined weight of 1000 pounds.

Couples with different types of bodies or preferences can also select a dual comfort variant that pairs Firm with Plush.

Bear in mind that if neither of these models seem quite right, you may always check out the 4 other variants in the new collection: the Sunset (plush, softer than the Moonlight), Dusk (moderate feel, a little firmer compared to the Midnight), Twilight (firm, designed for side sleepers), or Dawn (the firmest option in the line).

Motion Transfer

Next up, let us chat about motion transfer, or the amount of activity that’s noticeable from one side of the mattress to the other. While this will be significant for all sleepers, those who doze with a spouse may find it particularly interesting as it will illuminate just how bothered you may be by your partner’s nighttime movements. Helix Sleep.Com/Talk Radio

Based on my observation, Helix surpasses expectations for hybrids in this space due to the quantity and quality of foam it incorporates, in addition to the individually wrapped coils which help trap motion at its source. If you are a light sleeper concerned that motion from the other side of the bed will wake you, you shouldn’t have a lot of concern with this hybrid. I would say that any of the Helix mattresses are a good choice for couples.

Sinkage

When purchasing a brand-new mattress, the majority of people would like to know whether they’ll feel like they’re sinking “into” the it or lying “on top” of it.

Even though you may experience some immediate sinkage from the uppermost foam layers, when you sink through these layers, you will find the pocketed coils and feel fantastic support. This combo will appeal to a wide assortment of individuals, but will satisfy back and stomach sleepers the most.

Edge Support

Though I do feel the foam collapse as I sit near the edge of the Helix Midnight, the pocketed coils stop the mattress from compressing a lot . I feel very secure sitting on the bed.

In my opinion, Helix mattresses perform above average when it comes to edge support in comparison to other bed-in-a-box brands, and this is due to their recently updated edges that contain reinforcement in the coil system. There may be a little compression in the comfort foams when you sit with your entire weight on the side, but laying on the side should feel comfortable and safe. Couples who want more space to stretch out typically appreciate strong edges.

Lying down, I feel like I can get close to the edge of the mattress without feeling like I will fall off or be ejected from the mattress. Overall, I think that the Helix has great edge support.

100 Night Sleep Trial

Among the best features of buying a mattress-in-a-box online is the sleep trials that they typically come with. Helix Sleep is not any different. You create the mattress that is intended for you, place your order, and in 2 weeks, it is delivered to your home. From the minute you click to purchase the mattress, you’ve got 100 nights to try it out (minus the time for delivery, so it is more like 90 nights). If it is not perfect, you can return it for free of charge, and receive a full refund.

Should you return the mattress, it isn’t resold or restocked. In fact, Helix locates a local place to donate it. If there is no way the company can find a way to donate your returned mattress, they have it recycled instead. Helix Sleep.Com/Talk Radio

Helix Warranty

The Helix Mattress includes a generous 10-year guarantee that covers flaws, but it has some limitations, exceptions, plus the burden of proof is on the customer (like most guarantees ). Of course, you must be the original owner of the Helix to use the guarantee, and you need to be sure you save your receipt as proof of purchase.

As long as you follow all of the manufacturer’s expectations for use, your warranty is valid. That means you need to use a proper base (no adjustable bed frames or slats over 4 inches apart) and that you don’t use the Helix improperly – no jumping on the bed!

If your mattress starts to show an indentation of 1 inch or longer, which is what typically happens when low-density foams break down, you could qualify for a repair or replacement of your mattress.

What’s The Best Way To Care For Your Helix?

Helix mattresses need no flipping, but it’s suggested that you rotate the mattress perhaps once or twice a year to keep it from wearing down from excess sagging.

For regular cleaning, it is advised to use cold water with gentle dish detergent to clean any stains or dirt. Make sure to wash using soft circular motions, instead of rubbing.
