Helix Sleep offers hybrid mattresses made with polyfoam comfort systems, dual-layer covers, and pocketed coil support cores fortified with polyfoam base layers. Helix Sleep.Com/Ben

Helix Sleep offers full mattress customization. Customers are asked to fill out a survey that asks for their weight, height, firmness preferences, sleep position, and other factors. Then based on these answers, Helix Sleep will recommend one of the following 6 mattress variants; each individual variant provides a unique combination of firmness and support:

  • Helix Sunset: ‘Soft’ firmness, targeted cushioning, and balanced support
  • Helix Moonlight: ‘Soft’ firmness, moderate cushioning, and extra support
  • Helix Midnight: ‘Medium’ firmness, targeted cushioning, and balanced support
  • Helix Dusk: ‘Medium’ firmness, moderate cushioning, and extra support
  • Helix Twilight: ‘Firm’ firmness, targeted cushioning, and balanced support
  • Helix Dawn: ‘Firm’ firmness, moderate cushioning, and extra support

Helix Sleep mattresses with targeted cushioning conform closely, which makes them ideal for those who sleep on their side. While hybrids with moderate cushioning do not conform as much and are ideal for pretty much all sleep positions. Lighter individuals may feel more comfortable on variants with balanced support, while those that weigh 130 pounds or more tend to favor the variants with extra support.

Helix Sleep also offers 2 models with dual-firmness, the Helix Dual Balanced (with balanced support and targeted cushioning) and the Helix Dual Extra (with additional support and moderate cushioning). Both of these models have one ‘Firm’ side and one ‘Soft’ side, which makes them great for couples with different tastes. Lastly, the Helix Nightfall is a hybrid developed for bigger, heavier people. This model has an additional layer of memory foam for optimum support.

My review of Helix Sleep mattresses found that the customizable aspect accommodates sleepers with a large variety of firmness preferences and body types. The mattresses also have strong edge support, isolate movement well, and create less noise than the average hybrid. Helix Sleep.Com/Ben

Construction Helix Sleep.Com/Ben

All 9 of the various iterations of this mattress will differ slightly in construction, but for 6 of the 9 models, the construction should be rather similar. The six core variants (listed above) are 10 inches tall, composed of 6 inches of pocketed coils and 4 inches of foam.

Helix mattresses vary in firmness and density depending upon the foams used in order to attain more/less firmness and more/less support. The 4 unique foams utilized within Helix mattresses are memory foam, high-grade polyurethane foam, Helix Dynamic Foam, and a DuraDense Foam (aka support foam). Not all of the models have all of the foams – some only have three of the four – but it really shouldn’t matter much for the consumer. The foams are just levers that Helix Sleep can pull in order to offer 9 unique models (and supposedly have a model for everyone). Helix Sleep.Com/Ben

Underneath, I briefly discuss the construction (materials and quality) of the average Helix mattress, the Helix Midnight.

helix-midnight-construction

Cover – Originally, all Helix mattresses come with the same cover, made of 100 percent polyester. I thought it to be pliable and thin, allowing for some nice breathability. But, if you prefer something more amped up, you can choose to swap out the standard cover for the UltraCool one, which is composed of a phase-change fabric for heat regulation.

Comfort Layer – On top, you’ll discover a thick layer of memory foam. This type of foam has a slow reaction to pressure, meaning you are likely to experience some satisfying body contouring. While it might seem strange for a supposedly medium firm mattress to incorporate a memory foam comfort layer, it is important to remember that the presence of deep sinkage does not necessarily translate to softness; in actuality, oftentimes it generates quite a firm feel.

Transition Layer – After sinking through the memory foam comfort layer, you’ll find a transition layer of poly foam. This layer works to suppress the sinkage of the memory foam and create a supportive, medium firm feeling as you hit the individually wrapped coils underneath.

Support Layer – The majority of the mattress consists of this segment of pocketed coils. This system gives a supportive lift into the structure, working to position the sleeper “on top” of the bed, instead of “in it”. Because these coils are individually wrapped, they are also likely to allow additional breathability as air flows in between the spaces in the coils.

Base Layer – Last but not least, you’ll discover a thin section of high-density poly foam. This section doesn’t really affect the feel of the bed too much, working mostly to provide the individually wrapped coils something off of which to respond.

Firmness and Support

After having a look at the construction of the Helix mattresses, let’s talk about their different feels and firmness levels.

The firmness level of the Helix is going to vary widely depending on the version you select. The Helix Midnight and Dusk, have moderate firmness levels, which tends to be very versatile and therefore very popular. If you are more particular, however, Helix Sleep would be happy to provide you with additional choices.

Lying down on the Midnight, the memory foam layer feels soft and produces some top quality body contouring, while the other materials within the mattress work to counteract this and create an overall firmer composition. The firmer support foams and individually-wrapped coils also help with re-positioning.

For back sleepers, there is just enough good comfort material in the mattress to conform to your lower spine while supporting your back in a neutral position. For larger buyers or people who want a firmer mattress, there are two more choices for you in the Helix Dawn and Helix Twilight models.

Many side sleepers will feel perfectly comfy on the Midnight, but, if you’re needing a bit less pressure while still sticking with a versatile medium firmness, you might want to take a look at the Helix Dusk, which uses a body-conforming latex-alternative foam that is breathable and gives the surface a little bit of bounce.

Those who sleep on their side typically need to be more mindful of pressure since they sleep with all their weight on a smaller region. Those who are smaller than average or those looking for lots of pressure relief might want to stay with the plusher models.

Stomach sleepers should feel supported in the Midnight, especially if this is not their primary position or they tend to switch things up a lot. Firmer choices might be preferable for exclusive tummy sleepers so that they can ensure their hips do not dip and over-arch their backbone.

Last, the manufacturer recommends Helix for sleepers around 350 pounds or couples who weigh a maximum of 250 pounds each. In the event you or your spouse are significantly larger than average, the company has also produced a bed called the Nightfall that’s constructed to accommodate a total weight of 1000 lbs.

Partners with differing body types or tastes can also pick a dual comfort variant that combines Firm with Plush.

Bear in mind that if none of those options seem quite right, you could always have a look at the 4 other beds in the newest collection: the Sunset (plush, softer compared to the Moonlight), Dusk (moderate feel, slightly firmer than the Midnight), Twilight (firm, made for side sleepers), or Dawn (the firmest option in the line).

Motion Transfer

Now, let us talk about motion transfer, or the amount of activity that is noticeable from one side of the bed to the other. While this will be crucial for many buyers, those who doze with a partner may find it particularly intriguing as it’ll show just how bothered you may be by your bed mate’s nighttime movements. Helix Sleep.Com/Ben

Based on my observation, Helix Sleep surpasses expectations for hybrid mattresses in this space due to the quantity and quality of foam it contains, as well as the pocketed coils which help keep motion at its source. If you’re a light sleeper concerned that motion from the other side of the mattress will wake you, you should not have a lot of concern with this mattress. I would say that any of the Helix mattresses are a good option for couples.

Sinkage

While buying a new mattress, most men and women want to know whether they’ll feel like they’re sinking “into” the it or lying “on top” of it.

While you may encounter some immediate sinkage in the uppermost foam layers, when you sink through these layers, you are going to hit the pocketed coils and experience great support. This combo will appeal to a vast range of sleepers, but will suit back and stomach sleepers the most.

Edge Support

While I do feel the memory foam collapse as I sit close to the edge of the Helix Midnight, the pocketed coils stop the mattress from compressing a lot beyond that. I feel very secured sitting on the mattress.

In my opinion, Helix mattresses are well above average for edge support compared to other bed-in-a-box brands, which is because of their recently updated edges that contain reinforcement in the coil unit. There can be a little compression at the comfort foams when you sit with all your weight on the side, but lying on the side should feel comfortable and secure. Couples who want more space to stretch out typically appreciate stronger edges.

Laying down, I also feel like I can get close to the edge of the mattress without feeling like I will roll off or be pushed off the bed. Overall, I believe the Helix has great edge support.

100 Night Sleep Trial

One of the best features of purchasing a mattress-in-a-box online is the sleep trials that they usually come with. Helix Sleep is no different. You customize the mattress that is made for you, place your order, and in two weeks, it’s delivered to your door. From the moment you click to purchase the mattress, you’ve got 100 nights to try it out (minus the time for delivery, so it is more like 90 nights). If it is not ideal, you can return it for free of charge, and receive a full refund.

If you do return the mattress, it isn’t resold or restocked. In fact, Helix finds a local place to donate it. If there is no way Helix Sleep can find a way to donate your returned mattress, it’s recycled instead. Helix Sleep.Com/Ben

Helix Warranty

Helix Sleep offers an awesome 10-year guarantee that covers defects, but it comes with some limitations, exceptions, plus the burden of proof is on the customer (like most guarantees ). Of course, you must be the original owner of the Helix to use the guarantee, and you will need to be sure you save your receipt as proof of purchase.

As long as you follow all the manufacturer’s expectations for use, your warranty should be valid. That means you will need to have a proper foundation (no adjustable bed frames or slats more than 4″ apart) and that you don’t use the mattress improperly – no jumping on it!

If your Helix begins to show an indentation of 1″ or more, which is what typically happens when low-density foams break down, then you could qualify for a replacement or repair of your Helix.

What’s The Best Way To Care For Your Helix?

Helix mattresses require no turning, but it’s recommended that you rotate the mattress possibly once or twice a year to prevent it from wearing down from excessive sagging.

For regular cleaning, it is suggested to use cool water along gentle dish soap to clean any stains or dirt. Make certain that you wash using soft circular motions, rather than rubbing.
