Helix Sleep sells hybrid mattresses made using dual-layer covers, polyfoam comfort systems, and pocketed coil support cores reinforced using polyfoam base layers. Helix Pillows Martha Stewart

Helix Sleep gives you complete mattress customization. Buyers are requested to fill out a questionnaire that asks for their weight, height, firmness preferences, sleep position, and other options. Based on these results, Helix Sleep will recommend one of the following six mattress options; each individual variant provides a unique combination of firmness and support:

  • Helix Sunset: ‘Soft’ firmness, targeted cushioning, and balanced support
  • Helix Moonlight: ‘Soft’ firmness, moderate cushioning, and extra support
  • Helix Midnight: ‘Medium’ firmness, targeted cushioning, and balanced support
  • Helix Dusk: ‘Medium’ firmness, moderate cushioning, and extra support
  • Helix Twilight: ‘Firm’ firmness, targeted cushioning, and balanced support
  • Helix Dawn: ‘Firm’ firmness, moderate cushioning, and additional support

Helix Sleep mattresses with targeted cushioning conform closely, which makes them ideal for side sleepers. While those that have moderate cushioning do not conform as much and are suitable for pretty much all sleep positions. Lighter people may feel more comfy on models with balanced support, while people that weigh 130 pounds or more tend to favor the variants with extra support.

Helix Sleep also markets 2 models with dual-firmness, the Helix Dual Balanced (with balanced support and targeted cushioning) and the Helix Dual Extra (with moderate cushioning and additional support). Both of these mattresses have one ‘Soft’ side and one ‘Firm’ side, which makes them great for couples with differing tastes. Lastly, the Helix Nightfall is a hybrid developed for larger, heavier people. This mattress has an additional layer of memory foam for optimum support.

My review of Helix Sleep mattresses discovered that the customizable aspect conforms to sleepers with a large assortment of firmness preferences and body types. The mattresses also offer strong edge support, isolate motion transfer well, and create less noise than the normal hybrid. Helix Pillows Martha Stewart

Construction Helix Pillows Martha Stewart

All 9 of the different iterations of the mattress will differ slightly in construction, but for 6 of the 9 variants, the construction will be rather similar. The six core variants (listed above) are 10 inches tall, composed of 6 inches of individually wrapped coils and 4 inches of foam.

Helix mattresses vary in firmness and density based on the foams used in order to attain more/less firmness and more/less support. The 4 different foams utilized within Helix mattresses are high-grade polyurethane foam, memory foam, Helix Dynamic Foam, and a DuraDense Foam (aka support foam). Not all of the models have all of the foams – some only have 3 of the 4 – but it really shouldn’t matter much for the buyer. The foams are just levers that Helix Sleep can pull in order to offer nine unique mattresses (and supposedly have a model for everyone). Helix Pillows Martha Stewart

Underneath, I concisely discuss the construction (materials and quality) of the average Helix mattress, the Helix Midnight.

Cover – Initially, all Helix mattresses come with exactly the same cover, made of 100% polyester. I thought it to be pliable and thin, allowing for some wonderful breathability. But, if you prefer something more amped up, you can opt to swap out the normal cover for the brand’s UltraCool one, which is composed of a phase-change material for temperature regulation.

Comfort Layer – Up top, you will encounter a thick layer of memory foam. This type of foam has a slow reaction to pressure, which means you are probably going to experience some gratifying body shaping. While it might seem strange for a supposedly medium firm mattress to make use of a memory foam comfort layer, it’s important to remember that the presence of deep sinkage doesn’t always translate to softness; in fact, oftentimes it generates quite a firm feeling.

Transition Layer – After sinking through the comfort layer, you will discover a transition layer of poly foam. This layer works to curb the sinkage of the comfort layer and create a supportive, medium firm feeling as you reach the pocketed coils underneath.

Support Layer – Most of the mattress consists of this segment of individually wrapped coils. This system gives a supportive lift into the structure, working to place the sleeper “on top” of the bed, instead of “in it”. Because the coils are individually wrapped, they’re also likely to encourage extra breathability as air flows through the spaces in the coils.

Base Layer – Last but not least, you’ll uncover a thin section of high-density poly foam. This layer doesn’t affect the feel of the bed too much, functioning mostly to give the individually wrapped coils something off of which to react.

Firmness and Support

After taking a look at the construction of the Helix mattresses, let’s discuss their varying firmness levels and feels.

helix-mattress-firmness-and-support-scale

The firmness level of the Helix is going to vary widely depending on which model you choose. The Helix Midnight and Dusk, have moderate firmness levels, which tends to be very versatile and therefore very popular. If you have more specific needs, however, Helix Sleep would be happy to provide you with more options.

Lying down on the Helix Midnight, the memory foam comfort layer feels soft and produces some high quality body contouring, while the rest of the materials within the mattress work to counteract this and make an overall firmer composition. The pocketed coils and the firmer support foams also help with re-positioning.

For those who sleep on their back, there’s enough good comfort material in the mattress to conform to your lumbar while supporting your upper spine in a neutral position. For larger sleepers or those who want a firmer mattress, there are 2 more options for you in the Helix Twilight and Helix Dawn models.

Many side sleepers will feel perfectly comfy on the Midnight, however, if you’re wanting less pressure while still sticking with a versatile medium firmness, you may want to take a look at the Helix Dusk, which uses a body-conforming latex-alternative foam that is breathable and gives the surface a small bit of bounce.

Those who sleep on their side typically have to be mindful of pressure since they sleep with all their weight on a tinier area. People who are lighter than average or people looking for lots of pressure relief may want to stay with the plusher variants.

Those who sleep on their stomach will feel comfortable in the Midnight, especially if this is not their primary position or they tend to change things up a lot. Firmer mattresses may be preferable for exclusive stomach sleepers so they can make sure their hips don’t dip and over-arch their back.

Finally, the manufacturer recommends Helix mattresses for sleepers up to 350 pounds or partners who weigh a maximum of 250 lbs each. In the event you or your partner are substantially larger than average, the company has also produced a bed called the Nightfall that is created to accommodate a total weight of 1000 pounds.

Partners with differing types of bodies or tastes can also pick a dual comfort variant that combines Firm with Plush.

Keep in mind that if neither of those models sound quite right, you could always have a look at the 4 other variants in the new collection: the Sunset (plush, softer than the Moonlight), Dusk (moderate feel, slightly firmer than the Midnight), Twilight (firm, made for side sleepers), or Dawn (the firmest option in the line).

Motion Transfer

Next up, let’s talk about motion transfer, or the amount of activity that’s noticeable from 1 side of the bed to the other. While this is going to be important for many people, those who sleep with a spouse may find it especially interesting as it’ll illuminate just how bothered you’ll be by your partner’s nighttime movements. Helix Pillows Martha Stewart

According to my research, Helix Sleep exceeds expectations for hybrids in this space due to the amount and quality of foam it contains, in addition to the pocketed coils that help trap motion at its source. If you are a light sleeper concerned that motion from the opposite side of the bed will wake you, you should not have a lot of concern with this mattress. I’d say that any of the Helix mattresses would be a good option for couples.

Sinkage

While buying a new mattress, the majority of people wish to know whether they’ll feel as though they’re sinking “into” the mattress or lying “on top” of it.

Even though you may encounter some immediate sinkage in the soft foam on top, by the time you sink through those layers, you’ll reach the individually-wrapped coils and experience amazing support. This combo will appeal to a vast range of sleepers, but will suit back and stomach sleepers in particular.

Edge Support

Though I do feel the foam compress as I sit close to the edge of the Helix Midnight, the individually-wrapped coils stop the mattress from collapsing too much beyond that. I feel quite secured seated on the bed.

In my opinion, Helix mattresses are well above average when it comes to edge support in comparison to other bed-in-a-box brands, which is due to their recently updated edges containing reinforcement in the coil unit. There can be some compression at the comfort foams when you sit with your entire weight on the side, but lying on the side should feel comfortable and safe. Couples who need more space to stretch out typically appreciate strong edges.

Laying down, I also feel like I can get near the edge of the mattress without feeling like I will fall over or be ejected from the bed. Overall, I think the Helix has great edge support.

100 Night Sleep Trial

One of the best features of purchasing a bed-in-a-box online is the sleep trials they typically come with. Helix Sleep is no different. You customize the mattress that’s intended for you, place your order, and within 2 weeks, it is delivered to your door. From the minute you click to purchase the mattress, you have 100 nights to try it out (minus the time for delivery, so it is more like 90 nights). If it is not ideal, you can return it for free, and receive a full refund.

If you do return the mattress, it is not restocked or resold. Actually, Helix locates a local place to donate it. When there’s no way Helix Sleep can find a way to donate your refunded mattress, it’s recycled instead. Helix Pillows Martha Stewart

Helix Warranty

The Helix Mattress includes an awesome 10-year warranty that covers defects, but it has limitations, exceptions, and the burden of proof is on the consumer (like most guarantees ). Of course, you must be the first owner of the Helix to use the guarantee, and you need to be sure you keep your receipt as proof of purchase.

As long as you follow all of the manufacturer’s expectations for use, your warranty will be valid. That means you need to use a suitable base (no adjustable bed frames or slats over 4″ apart) and you don’t use the Helix improperly – no jumping on the bed!

If your mattress starts to show an indentation of 1″ or longer, which is what usually happens when low-density foams break down, you could qualify for a replacement or repair of your mattress.

What’s The Best Way To Care For Your Helix?

Helix mattresses need no flipping, but it is recommended that you rotate the mattress perhaps a couple of times a year to keep it from wearing down from excess sagging.

For routine cleanup, it’s suggested to use cold water along gentle dish soap to clean any dirt or stains. Be sure to clean using soft circular movements, rather than rubbing.
