Helix Sleep sells hybrid mattresses made with polyfoam comfort systems, dual-layer covers, and pocketed coil support cores enhanced with polyfoam base layers. Helix Palo Alto

Helix Sleep gives you complete mattress customization. Buyers are urged to complete a questionnaire that discusses their weight, height, firmness preferences, sleep position, and other elements. Then based on these answers, Helix Sleep will suggest one of the following six mattress options; each individual option gives a one-of-a-kind combination of support and firmness:

  • Helix Sunset: ‘Soft’ firmness, targeted cushioning, and balanced support
  • Helix Moonlight: ‘Soft’ firmness, moderate cushioning, and additional support
  • Helix Midnight: ‘Medium’ firmness, targeted cushioning, and balanced support
  • Helix Dusk: ‘Medium’ firmness, moderate cushioning, and additional support
  • Helix Twilight: ‘Firm’ firmness, targeted cushioning, and balanced support
  • Helix Dawn: ‘Firm’ firmness, moderate cushioning, and additional support

Helix Palo Alto

Helix Sleep hybrids with targeted cushioning conform closely, which makes them optimal for side sleepers. While mattresses that have moderate cushioning don’t conform as much and are suitable for pretty much all sleep positions. Lighter individuals may feel most comfortable on variants with balanced support, while those that weigh 130 pounds or more often favor the variants with additional support.

Helix Sleep also markets 2 models with dual-firmness, the Helix Dual Balanced (with balanced support and targeted cushioning) and the Helix Dual Extra (with additional support and moderate cushioning). Both these models have one ‘Firm’ side and one ‘Soft’ side, which makes them suitable for couples with differing preferences. Lastly, the Helix Nightfall is a hybrid designed for bigger, heavier individuals. This model has an extra layer of memory foam for optimum support.

My review of Helix Sleep mattresses found that the customizable selection conforms to sleepers with a large range of body types and firmness preferences. The mattresses also provide strong edge support, isolate movement well, and create less noise than the average hybrid. Helix Palo Alto

Construction Helix Palo Alto

All 9 of the different iterations of this mattress will differ slightly in construction, but for 6 of the 9 models, the construction should be fairly similar. The six core models (listed above) are 10 inches tall, composed of 6 inches of individually wrapped coils and 4 inches of foam.

Helix mattresses vary in firmness and density based upon the foams utilized in order to achieve more/less support and more/less firmness. The four unique foams utilized within Helix mattresses are memory foam, high-grade polyurethane foam, Helix Dynamic Foam, and a DuraDense Foam (aka support foam). Not all the models have all of the foams – some only have three of the four – but it really shouldn’t matter much for the purchaser. The foams are merely levers that Helix Sleep can pull in order to offer 9 distinct versions (and hopefully have a mattress for everybody). Helix Palo Alto

Below, I briefly discuss the construction (materials and quality) of your typical Helix mattress, the Helix Midnight.

Cover – Initially, all Helix mattresses come with exactly the same cover, made of 100% polyester. I found it to be stretchy and thin, allowing for some wonderful breathability. But, if you prefer something more lavish, you can choose to swap out the normal cover for the UltraCool one, which is composed of a phase change fabric for heat regulation.

Comfort Layer – On top, you’ll find a thick layer of memory foam. This type of foam has a slow response to pressure, meaning you’re probably going to encounter some great body shaping. While it might seem odd for a purportedly medium firm bed to feature a memory foam layer, it’s crucial to remember that the feeling of deep sinkage does not necessarily translate to softness; in actuality, oftentimes it generates quite a firm feel.

Transition Layer – After getting past the comfort layer, you will find a transition layer of poly foam. This layer of foam works to curb the sinkage of the memory foam and create a supportive, medium firm feel as you reach the pocketed coils below.

Support Layer – Most of the mattress is made up of this segment of individually wrapped coils. This system brings a supportive lift into the construction, working to put the sleeper “on top” of the bed, instead of “in it”. Because these coils are wrapped individually, they’re also going to allow additional breathability as air flows through the spaces in the coils.

Base Layer – Last, you will uncover a thin section of high-density poly foam. This section does not really affect the feel of the mattress too much, functioning mostly to provide the individually wrapped coils something off of which to respond.

Firmness and Support

After having a peek at the construction of the Helix mattresses, let’s discuss their different firmness levels and feels.

helix-mattress-firmness-and-support-scale

The firmness level of the Helix is going to differ widely depending on the variant you choose. The Helix Midnight and Dusk, have medium firmness levels, which tends to be quite versatile and thus exceptionally popular. If you have more specific requirements, however, Helix Sleep would be happy to oblige you with more options.

Laying down on the Helix Midnight, the memory foam layer is soft and generates some quality body shaping, while the rest of the materials within the Midnight work to control this and make an overall firmer structure. The individually-wrapped coils and the firmer support foams also assist with re-positioning.

For back sleepers, there’s just enough good comfort material in the Midnight to conform to your lumbar while supporting your whole upper spine in a neutral position. For heavier sleepers or people who want a firmer mattress, there are two more options for you in the Helix Twilight and Helix Dawn variants.

Majority of side sleepers should feel perfectly comfy on the Midnight, however, if you are wanting a bit less pressure while still sticking with a flexible medium firmness, you may decide to take a look at the Helix Dusk, which utilizes a body-conforming latex-alternative foam that’s breathable and gives the surface a little bit of bounce.

Side sleepers typically have to be more mindful of pressure because they sleep with all their weight on a smaller area. Those who are lighter than average or people in the market for a lot of pressure relief may want to stay with the plusher variants.

Stomach sleepers will feel comfortable in the Midnight, particularly if this isn’t their main position or they have a tendency to change things up a lot. Firmer mattresses may be preferable for exclusive stomach sleepers so that they can ensure their hips do not dip and over-arch their backbone.

Lastly, Helix Sleep recommends Helix mattresses for sleepers around 350 pounds or partners that weigh a maximum of 250 lbs each. In the event you or your spouse are substantially bigger than average, Helix has also produced a bed called the Nightfall that’s built to accommodate a total weight of 1000 lbs.

Partners with different body types or tastes may also select a dual comfort variant that combines Firm with Plush.

Bear in mind that if none of these options seem right, you can always check out the 4 other models in the new collection: the Sunset (plush, softer compared to the Moonlight), Dusk (moderate feel, slightly firmer than the Midnight), Twilight (firm, designed for side sleepers), or Dawn (the firmest option of the bunch).

Motion Transfer

Next up, let us chat about motion transfer, or the amount of disturbance that’s detectable from 1 side of the bed to the other. While this will be significant for many sleepers, those who sleep with a partner may find it particularly interesting as it will illuminate just how bothered you may be by your partner’s nighttime movements. Helix Palo Alto

According to my research, Helix Sleep surpasses expectations for hybrids in this space due to the amount and quality of foam it contains, in addition to the individually wrapped coils which help trap motion at its source. If you’re a light sleeper worried that motion from the opposite side of the bed will bother you, you shouldn’t have a lot of concern with this mattress. I’d say that any of the Helix mattresses would be a good choice for couples.

Sinkage

While getting a brand-new mattress, most men and women want to know whether they will feel as though they are sinking “into” the mattress or lying “on top” of it.

While you may experience some immediate sinkage in the uppermost foam layers, when you sink through these layers, you are going to reach the individually-wrapped coils and feel amazing support. This combination will interest a vast range of sleepers, but will suit back and stomach sleepers in particular.

Edge Support

Though I do feel the memory foam compress as I sit close to the edge of the bed, the individually-wrapped coils prevent the mattress from collapsing a lot . I feel very secured seated on the mattress.

In my view, Helix mattresses are well above average when it comes to edge support compared to other bed-in-a-box brands, and this is because of their recently updated edges containing reinforcement in the coil unit. There can be a little compression in the comfort foams when you sit with your entire weight on the side, but lying on the side will feel comfortable and secure. Partners who need more space to stretch out normally love strong edges.

Laying down, I also feel like I could get close to the edge of the mattress without feeling like I will roll over or be pushed off the mattress. Overall, I believe the Helix has nice edge support.

100 Night Sleep Trial

Among the best features of buying a bed-in-a-box online is the sleep trials they typically include. Helix Mattress is no different. You create the mattress that’s meant for you, place your order, and in two weeks, it’s sent to your door. From the moment you click to purchase the mattress, you have 100 nights to check it out (minus the time for delivery, so it is more like 90 nights). If it isn’t perfect, you can return it for free of charge, and get a complete refund.

If you do return the mattress, it isn’t restocked or resold. Actually, Helix does its best to find a local place to donate it. If there’s no way Helix Sleep can find a way to donate your refunded mattress, they have it recycled instead. Helix Palo Alto

Helix Warranty

Helix offers a generous 10-year guarantee that covers defects, but it has some limitations, exceptions, and the burden of proof is on the purchaser (like most warranties). Needless to say, you must be the first owner of the Helix to make use of the warranty, and you will need to be sure that you keep your receipt as proof of purchase.

Provided that you follow all of the manufacturer’s expectations for use, your warranty will be valid. That means you will need to use a suitable base (no adjustable bed frames or slats more than 4″ apart) and you don’t use the Helix improperly – no jumping on it!

If your Helix starts to have an indentation of 1″ or more, which is what typically happens when low-density foams break down, then you could qualify for a replacement or repair of your mattress.

What’s The Best Way To Care For Your Helix?

Helix mattresses need no flipping, but it’s recommended that you rotate the mattress possibly a couple of times a year to prevent it from wearing down from excessive sagging.

For regular cleanup, it is suggested to use cool water along gentle dish detergent to clean any dirt or stains. Be sure that you wash using soft circular movements, instead of rubbing.
