Helix Sleep offers hybrid mattresses manufactured using dual-layer covers, polyfoam comfort systems, and pocketed coil support cores enhanced with polyfoam base layers. Helix Memory Foam Mattress Density

Helix Sleep allows full mattress customization. Buyers are requested to fill out a questionnaire that asks for their weight, height, firmness preferences, sleep position, and other elements. Based on these results, Helix Sleep will suggest one of the following six mattress options; each individual option provides a one-of-a-kind combination of support and firmness:

  • Helix Sunset: ‘Soft’ firmness, targeted cushioning, and balanced support
  • Helix Moonlight: ‘Soft’ firmness, moderate cushioning, and additional support
  • Helix Midnight: ‘Medium’ firmness, targeted cushioning, and balanced support
  • Helix Dusk: ‘Medium’ firmness, moderate cushioning, and additional support
  • Helix Twilight: ‘Firm’ firmness, targeted cushioning, and balanced support
  • Helix Dawn: ‘Firm’ firmness, moderate cushioning, and additional support

Helix Sleep mattresses with targeted cushioning conform closely, which makes them optimal for those who sleep on their side. While hybrids with moderate cushioning don’t conform as much and are ideal for pretty much all sleep positions. Lighter individuals may feel more comfy on models with balanced support, while individuals who weigh 130 lbs or more tend to favor the models with extra support.

Helix Sleep also offers 2 variants with dual-firmness, the Helix Dual Balanced (with targeted cushioning and balanced support) and the Helix Dual Extra (with additional support and moderate cushioning). Both these mattresses have one ‘Firm’ side and one ‘Soft’ side, making them suitable for couples with different preferences. Last, the Helix Nightfall is a hybrid developed for bigger, heavier individuals. This mattress has an extra layer of memory foam for optimum support.

My review of Helix Sleep mattresses discovered that the customizable selection conforms to sleepers with a large assortment of firmness preferences and body types. The mattresses also provide strong edge support, isolate motion transfer nicely, and create less noise than the normal hybrid. Helix Memory Foam Mattress Density

Construction Helix Memory Foam Mattress Density

All nine of the different iterations of this mattress will differ slightly in construction, but for 6 of the 9 variants, the construction should be fairly similar. The 6 core variants (listed above) are 10 inches tall, composed of 6 inches of pocketed coils and 4 inches of foam.

Helix mattresses vary in density and firmness based upon the foams utilized in order to attain more/less firmness and more/less support. The four different foams utilized within Helix mattresses are high-grade polyurethane foam, memory foam, Helix Dynamic Foam, and a DuraDense Foam (aka support foam). Not all the models have all of the foams – some only have three of the four – but it really won’t matter much for the consumer. The foams are just levers that Helix Sleep can pull to be able to offer nine different variants (and supposedly have a model for everyone). Helix Memory Foam Mattress Density

Underneath, I quickly talk about the construction (materials and quality) of your average Helix mattress, the Helix Midnight.

Cover – Initially, all Helix mattresses have the same cover, made of 100% polyester. I found it to be pliable and thin, allowing for some nice breathability. But, if you prefer something more lavish, you can opt to swap out the standard cover for the brand’s UltraCool one, which is made up of a phase change material for temperature regulation.

Comfort Layer – Up top, you will encounter a thick layer of memory foam. This type of foam has a slow reaction to pressure, which means you’re likely to experience some satisfying body contouring. While it might seem strange for a purportedly medium firmness bed to feature a memory foam layer, it is important to remember that the existence of deep sinkage does not necessarily translate to softness; in fact, oftentimes it generates quite a firm feel.

Transition Layer – After getting past the memory foam comfort layer, you’ll uncover a transition layer of poly foam. This layer of foam works to curb the sinkage of the memory foam and establish a supportive, medium firm feeling as you hit the pocketed coils underneath.

Support Layer – Most of the mattress consists of this section of pocketed coils. This system gives a supportive lift into the construction, working to position the sleeper “on top” of the bed, instead of “in it”. Since the coils are individually wrapped, they’re also going to allow additional breathability as air flows in between the spaces in the coils.

Base Layer – Lastly, you’ll discover a thin segment of high-density poly foam. This section doesn’t affect the feel of the bed too much, working mostly to provide the pocketed coils something off of which to react.

Firmness and Support

After taking a look at the construction of the Helix mattresses, let us chat about their different firmness levels and feels.

helix-mattress-firmness-and-support-scale

The firmness level of the Helix will vary widely depending on the version you pick out. The Helix Dusk and Midnight, have medium firmness levels, which is going to be very versatile and thus exceptionally popular. If you have more specific requirements, however, Helix Sleep is happy to provide you with more options.

Lying down on the Midnight, the uppermost foam comfort layer feels soft and produces some quality body contouring, while the other materials in the Midnight work to control this and make an overall firmer structure. The firmer support foams and pocketed coils also help with re-positioning.

For back sleepers, there’s just enough good comfort material in the Helix Midnight to conform to your lower spine while supporting your whole back in a neutral position. For heavier sleepers or those who want a firmer bed, there are 2 more options for you in the Helix Twilight and Helix Dawn variants.

Majority of side sleepers will feel perfectly comfy on the Midnight, however, if you’re needing a bit less pressure while still going with a versatile medium firmness, you might decide to check out the Helix Dusk, which utilizes a body-conforming latex-alternative foam that’s breathable and provides the surface a small bit of bounce.

Those who sleep on their side typically have to be more mindful of pressure since they sleep with all their weight on a tinier area. People who are lighter than average or those in the market for lots of pressure relief may want to stay with the plusher models.

Stomach sleepers will feel comfortable in the Midnight, especially if this isn’t their primary position or they have a tendency to switch things up a lot. Firmer choices might be preferable for exclusive tummy sleepers so they can make sure their hips do not dip and over-arch their back.

Last, the manufacturer suggests Helix mattresses for sleepers around 350 pounds or couples that weigh up to 250 pounds each. In the event you or your partner are substantially bigger than average, Helix has also produced a mattress called the Nightfall that’s made to accommodate a combined weight of 1000 lbs.

Couples with differing body types or preferences can also pick a dual comfort variant that combines Firm with Plush.

Bear in mind that if none of those options sound right, you could always check out the four other models in the new collection: the Sunset (plush, softer than the Moonlight), Dusk (medium feel, a little firmer than the Midnight), Twilight (firm, designed for side sleepers), or Dawn (the firmest variant of the bunch).

Motion Transfer

Next up, let us talk about motion transfer, or the amount of activity that’s noticeable from 1 side of the bed to the other. While this will be crucial for many people, those who sleep with a spouse may find it especially interesting as it’ll show just how bothered you may be by your partner’s nighttime movements. Helix Memory Foam Mattress Density

According to my research, Helix Sleep surpasses expectations for hybrids in this space because of the amount and quality of foam it contains, in addition to the individually wrapped coils which help keep motion at its source. If you’re a light sleeper afraid that motion from the other side of the bed will bother you, you should not have much concern with this hybrid. I would say that any of the Helix mattresses would be a good choice for couples.

Sinkage

When getting a new mattress, most people want to know whether they will feel as though they are sinking “into” the it or lying “on top” of it.

While you’re going to encounter some immediate sinkage in the soft foam on top, by the time you sink through these layers, you are going to find the individually-wrapped coils and find great support. This combo will appeal to a vast assortment of individuals, but will satisfy stomach and back sleepers the most.

Edge Support

While I do feel the foam compress as I sit close to the edge of the bed, the pocketed coils stop the mattress from compressing a lot . I feel quite secured sitting on the mattress.

In my opinion, Helix mattresses perform above average for edge support in comparison to other bed-in-a-box brands, which is due to their freshly updated edges that contain reinforcement in the coil system. There may be a little compression in the comfort foams when you sit with your entire weight on the side, but lying on the side will feel comfortable and secure. Partners who need more space to stretch out normally love stronger edges.

Laying down, I feel like I could get close to the edge of the bed without feeling like I’ll fall off or be ejected from the bed. Overall, I think that the Helix has nice edge support.

100 Night Sleep Trial

One of the best features of buying a bed-in-a-box online is the sleep trials they usually come with. Helix is no different. You customize the mattress that is intended for you, place your order, and in two weeks, it’s sent to your home. From the minute you click to purchase the mattress, you’ve got 100 nights to test it out (minus the time for delivery, so it is more like 90 nights). If it is not perfect, you can return it free, and get a full refund.

If you do return the mattress, it isn’t restocked or resold. In fact, the company locates a local place to donate it. If there’s no way Helix Sleep can find a way to donate your refunded mattress, it’s recycled instead. Helix Memory Foam Mattress Density

Helix Warranty

The Helix Mattress includes a generous 10-year warranty that covers defects, but it comes with limitations, exceptions, plus the burden of proof is on the customer (like most warranties). Needless to say, you should be the first owner of the mattress to make use of the warranty, and you need to be sure that you keep your receipt as proof of purchase.

Provided that you follow all Helix’s expectations for use, your warranty is valid. That means you will need to have a proper foundation (no adjustable bed frames or slats over 4 inches apart) and that you don’t use the mattress improperly – no jumping on the bed!

If your mattress begins to have an indentation of 1″ or longer, something that typically happens when low-density foams break down, then you could be eligible for a repair or replacement of your Helix.

What’s The Best Way To Care For Your Helix?

Helix mattresses need no flipping, but it is suggested that you rotate the mattress perhaps a couple of times a year to keep it from wearing down from excess sagging.

For regular cleanup, it’s advised to use cold water along gentle dish detergent to clean any stains or dirt. Be sure to wash using soft circular motions, rather than rubbing.
