Helix Sleep markets hybrid mattresses made using polyfoam comfort systems, dual-layer covers, and pocketed coil support cores reinforced with polyfoam base layers. Helix Mattress Vs Wink Mattress

Helix Sleep offers full mattress customization. Buyers are urged to complete a survey that discusses their weight, height, sleep position, firmness preferences, and other factors. Then based on these results, Helix Sleep will recommend one of the following six mattress options; each individual model provides a unique combination of support and firmness:

  • Helix Sunset: ‘Soft’ firmness, targeted cushioning, and balanced support
  • Helix Moonlight: ‘Soft’ firmness, moderate cushioning, and additional support
  • Helix Midnight: ‘Medium’ firmness, targeted cushioning, and balanced support
  • Helix Dusk: ‘Medium’ firmness, moderate cushioning, and additional support
  • Helix Twilight: ‘Firm’ firmness, targeted cushioning, and balanced support
  • Helix Dawn: ‘Firm’ firmness, moderate cushioning, and extra support

Helix Sleep mattresses that have targeted cushioning conform closely, making them optimal for side sleepers. While mattresses with moderate cushioning don’t conform as much and are ideal for all sleep positions. Lighter individuals may feel more comfortable on variants with balanced support, while those that weigh 130 lbs or more tend to favor the models with extra support.

Helix Sleep also markets 2 models with dual-firmness, the Helix Dual Balanced (with balanced support and targeted cushioning) and the Helix Dual Extra (with moderate cushioning and additional support). Both of these mattresses have one ‘Soft’ side and one ‘Firm’ side, making them suitable for couples with differing preferences. Last, the Helix Nightfall is a hybrid developed for bigger, heavier individuals. This variant has an additional layer of memory foam for maximum support.

My review of Helix Sleep mattresses found that the customizable selection conforms to sleepers with a wide assortment of firmness preferences and body types. The mattresses also offer strong edge support, isolate motion transfer nicely, and produce less noise than the average hybrid. Helix Mattress Vs Wink Mattress

Construction Helix Mattress Vs Wink Mattress

All 9 of the various iterations of this mattress will differ slightly in construction, but for 6 of the 9 variants, the construction will be quite similar. The 6 core models (listed above) are 10 inches tall, composed of 6 inches of individually wrapped coils and 4 inches of foam.

Helix mattresses vary in density and firmness depending on the foams utilized in order to get more/less support and more/less firmness. The 4 unique foams utilized within Helix mattresses are memory foam, high-grade polyurethane foam, Helix Dynamic Foam, and a DuraDense Foam (aka support foam). Not all of the models have all the foams – some just have three of the four – but it really won’t matter much for the buyer. The foams are just levers that Helix Sleep can pull to be able to offer 9 different variants (and supposedly have a mattress for everybody). Helix Mattress Vs Wink Mattress

Below, I concisely talk about the construction (materials and quality) of the typical Helix mattress, the Helix Midnight.

helix-midnight-construction

Cover – Initially, all Helix mattresses come with the same cover, made of 100% polyester. I thought it to be pliable and thin, allowing for some great breathability. However, if you prefer something more amped up, you can choose to swap out the regular cover for the UltraCool one, which is made up of a phase-change fabric for temperature regulation.

Comfort Layer – On top, you will find a heavy layer of memory foam. This type of foam has a slow reaction to pressure, which means you are probably going to encounter some gratifying body contouring. While it might seem odd for a supposedly medium firm mattress to incorporate a memory foam layer, it is important to remember that the existence of deep sinkage does not necessarily translate to softness; in fact, oftentimes it generates quite a firm feel.

Transition Layer – After getting past the memory foam comfort layer, you will uncover a transition layer of poly foam. This layer works to suppress the sinkage of the comfort layer and create a supportive, medium firm feeling as you hit the pocketed coils underneath.

Support Layer – Most of the mattress is made up of this segment of pocketed coils. This system gives a supportive lift to the structure, working to position the sleeper “on top” of the bed, instead of “in it”. Since the coils are individually wrapped, they are also likely to allow additional breathability as air flows in between the spaces in the coils.

Base Layer – Last, you’ll discover a thin section of high-density poly foam. This layer does not affect the feel of the mattress too much, working mostly to provide the pocketed coils something off of which to respond.

Firmness and Support

After having a look at the construction of the Helix mattresses, let’s talk about their different firmness levels and feels.

helix-mattress-firmness-and-support-scale

The firmness level of the Helix will vary widely depending on the version you choose. The Helix Midnight and Dusk, have medium firmness levels, which will be quite versatile and therefore best-selling. If you are more particular, however, Helix Sleep will be happy to oblige you with additional choices.

Lying down on the Midnight, the memory foam comfort layer is soft and generates some top quality body shaping, while the other materials in the Midnight work to counteract this and create an overall firmer composition. The pocketed coils and the firmer support foams also help with re-positioning.

For back sleepers, there is enough good comfort material in the mattress to conform to your lumbar while supporting your upper spine in a neutral position. For larger sleepers or people who want a firmer bed, there are two more options for you in the Helix Twilight and Helix Dawn variants.

Many side sleepers will feel perfectly comfy on the Midnight, however, if you’re needing a bit less pressure while still sticking with a flexible medium firmness, you might want to take a look at the Helix Dusk, which uses a body-conforming latex-alternative foam that is breathable and gives the surface a small bit of bounce.

Those who sleep on their side typically need to be mindful of pressure because they sleep with most of their weight on a smaller area. Those who are smaller than average or those in the market for a lot of pressure relief may want to stay with the plusher variants.

Stomach sleepers will feel supported in the Midnight, particularly if this is not their primary position or they tend to switch things up a lot. Firmer mattresses may be preferable for exclusive tummy sleepers so that they can ensure their hips do not dip and over-arch their back.

Finally, Helix Sleep recommends Helix for sleepers up to 350 lbs or couples that weigh a maximum of 250 pounds each. If you or your partner are significantly larger than average, Helix has also created a bed called the Nightfall that’s constructed to accommodate a combined weight of 1000 pounds.

Couples with differing types of bodies or preferences can also pick a dual comfort variant that pairs Firm with Plush.

Bear in mind that if neither of these models sound right, you could always have a look at the 4 other models in the newest collection: the Sunset (plush, softer compared to the Moonlight), Dusk (moderate feel, a little firmer than the Midnight), Twilight (firm, made for side sleepers), or Dawn (the firmest option of the bunch).

Motion Transfer

Next up, let us talk about motion transfer, or the amount of activity that is noticeable from one side of the mattress to the other. While this will be important for many people, those who sleep with a spouse may find it especially interesting as it’ll show just how bothered you’ll be by your bed mate’s nighttime movements. Helix Mattress Vs Wink Mattress

Based on my observation, Helix exceeds expectations for hybrid mattresses in this space because of the amount and quality of foam it incorporates, as well as the pocketed coils which help keep motion at its source. If you are a light sleeper afraid that motion from the opposite side of the mattress will wake you, then you shouldn’t have much concern with this hybrid. I would say that all of the Helix mattresses would be a good choice for couples.

Sinkage

While purchasing a brand-new mattress, most men and women would like to know whether they’ll feel as though they are sinking “into” the mattress or laying “on top” of it.

While you may encounter some immediate sinkage from the soft foam on top, when you sink through these layers, you’ll hit the individually-wrapped coils and feel fantastic support. This combo will interest a vast assortment of sleepers, but will satisfy stomach and back sleepers the most.

Edge Support

Though I do feel the memory foam collapse as I sit close to the edge of the Helix Midnight, the individually-wrapped coils prevent the mattress from compressing a lot beyond that. I feel very secure sitting on the bed.

In my view, Helix mattresses are well above average for edge support in comparison to other bed-in-a-box brands, which is because of their recently updated edges that contain reinforcement in the coil system. There can be some compression at the comfort foams when you sit with all your weight on the side, but lying on the side should feel comfortable and safe. Partners who need more space to stretch out typically appreciate strong edges.

Laying down, I feel like I could get near the edge of the mattress without feeling like I will fall off or be pushed off the bed. Overall, I believe that the Helix mattress has great edge support.

100 Night Sleep Trial

Among the best features of buying a bed-in-a-box online is the sleep trials that they usually include. Helix is no different. You create the mattress that’s made for you, place your order, and in a couple of weeks, it is sent to your home. From the moment you click to purchase the mattress, you’ve got 100 nights to test it out (minus the time for delivery, so it’s more like 90 nights). If it is not ideal, you can return it for free, and receive a complete refund.

Should you return the mattress, it isn’t resold or restocked. Actually, Helix finds a local place to donate it. If there is no way the company can find a way to donate your returned mattress, it’s recycled instead. Helix Mattress Vs Wink Mattress

Helix Warranty

The Helix Mattress includes a generous 10-year guarantee that covers flaws, but it has limitations, exceptions, and the burden of proof is on the consumer (like most warranties). Of course, you should be the first owner of the mattress to make use of the warranty, and you need to be sure that you save your receipt as proof of purchase.

Provided that you follow all of the manufacturer’s expectations for use, your warranty should be valid. That means you will need to have a proper foundation (no adjustable bed frames or slats over 4″ apart) and that you don’t use the Helix improperly – no jumping on the bed!

If your Helix begins to show an indentation of 1″ or longer, which is what usually happens when low-density foams break down, then you could qualify for a replacement or repair of your mattress.

What’s The Best Way To Care For Your Helix?

Helix mattresses need no flipping, but it’s suggested that you rotate the mattress possibly a couple of times a year to keep it from wearing down from excessive sagging.

For regular cleanup, it’s advised to use cool water along gentle dish detergent to clean any dirt or stains. Make sure to clean using gentle circular movements, rather than rubbing.
