Helix Sleep sells hybrid mattresses made using polyfoam comfort systems, dual-layer covers, and pocketed coil support cores enhanced using polyfoam base layers. Helix Mattress Toxicity Score

Helix Sleep allows complete mattress customization. Buyers are asked to complete a questionnaire that discusses their weight, height, sleep position, firmness preferences, and other elements. Then based on these results, Helix Sleep will suggest one of the following six mattress variants; each individual variant gives a unique combination of support and firmness:

  • Helix Sunset: ‘Soft’ firmness, targeted cushioning, and balanced support
  • Helix Moonlight: ‘Soft’ firmness, moderate cushioning, and extra support
  • Helix Midnight: ‘Medium’ firmness, targeted cushioning, and balanced support
  • Helix Dusk: ‘Medium’ firmness, moderate cushioning, and extra support
  • Helix Twilight: ‘Firm’ firmness, targeted cushioning, and balanced support
  • Helix Dawn: ‘Firm’ firmness, moderate cushioning, and extra support

Helix Sleep hybrids that have targeted cushioning conform closely, making them optimal for those who sleep on their side. While mattresses with moderate cushioning do not conform as much and are ideal for pretty much all sleep positions. Lighter people may feel most comfy on models with balanced support, while those who weigh 130 lbs or more often prefer the variants with additional support.

Helix Sleep also markets two mattresses with dual-firmness, the Helix Dual Balanced (with targeted cushioning and balanced support) and the Helix Dual Extra (with additional support and moderate cushioning). Both these mattresses have one ‘Soft’ side and one ‘Firm’ side, making them ideal for couples with different tastes. Last, the Helix Nightfall is a hybrid developed for larger, heavier individuals. This model has an additional layer of memory foam for maximum support.

My review of Helix Sleep mattresses found that the customizable aspect accommodates sleepers with a large variety of firmness preferences and body types. The mattresses also offer strong edge support, isolate movement well, and produce less noise than the average hybrid. Helix Mattress Toxicity Score

Construction Helix Mattress Toxicity Score

All nine of the different iterations of this mattress will differ slightly in construction, but for 6 of the 9 variants, the construction will be rather similar. The six core variants (listed above) are 10 inches tall, composed of 6 inches of individually wrapped coils and 4 inches of foam.

Helix mattresses differ in density and firmness depending upon the foams utilized in order to get more/less support and more/less firmness. The four unique foams used within Helix mattresses are memory foam, high-grade polyurethane foam, Helix Dynamic Foam, and a DuraDense Foam (aka support foam). Not all of the variants have all of the foams – some just have three of the four – but it really shouldn’t matter much for the purchaser. The foams are just levers that Helix Sleep can pull in order to offer 9 distinct versions (and hopefully have a model for everybody). Helix Mattress Toxicity Score

Underneath, I briefly discuss the construction (materials and quality) of the average Helix mattress, the Helix Midnight.

helix-midnight-construction

Cover – Initially, all Helix mattresses come with exactly the same cover, made of 100 percent polyester. I thought it to be thin and pliable, allowing for some nice breathability. But, if you want something more luxurious, you can opt to swap out the regular cover for the UltraCool one, which is made up of a phase-change material for heat regulation.

Comfort Layer – On top, you will find a heavy layer of memory foam. This type of foam has a slow response to pressure, which means you’re probably going to encounter some satisfying body shaping. While it might seem odd for a supposedly medium firm mattress to make use of a memory foam comfort layer, it is crucial to remember that the existence of deep sinkage does not always translate to softness; in fact, oftentimes it produces quite a firm feeling.

Transition Layer – After sinking through the comfort layer, you’ll find a transition layer of poly foam. This layer works to curb the sinkage of the comfort layer and create a supportive, medium firm feeling as you hit the individually wrapped coils below.

Support Layer – Most of the mattress is made up of this section of pocketed coils. This system gives a supportive lift into the construction, working to position the sleeper “on top” of the mattress, instead of “in it”. Since these coils are individually wrapped, they’re also going to allow extra breathability as air flows in between the spaces in the coils.

Base Layer – Lastly, you’ll uncover a thin section of high-density poly foam. This layer doesn’t affect the feel of the mattress too much, working mostly to provide the individually wrapped coils something off of which to react.

Firmness and Support

After taking a look at the construction of the Helix mattresses, let us discuss their different feels and firmness levels.

helix-mattress-firmness-and-support-scale

The firmness of the Helix is going to vary widely depending on the version you pick out. The Helix Midnight and Dusk, have medium firmness levels, which is going to be very versatile and thus best-selling. If you are more particular, however, Helix Sleep is happy to oblige you with more options.

Lying down on the Midnight, the memory foam comfort layer is soft and generates some quality body contouring, while the other materials within the mattress work to control this and create an overall firmer composition. The individually-wrapped coils and the firmer support foams also assist with re-positioning.

For those who sleep on their back, there’s just enough good comfort material in the mattress to conform to your lower spine while supporting your whole back in a neutral position. For larger sleepers or those who want a firmer mattress, there are 2 more choices for you in the Helix Twilight and Helix Dawn models.

Many side sleepers should feel totally comfy on the Midnight, however, if you’re needing less pressure while still going with a flexible medium firmness, you may decide to take a look at the Helix Dusk, which uses a body-conforming latex-alternative foam that’s breathable and provides the surface a small bit of bounce.

Those who sleep on their side typically have to be more mindful of pressure since they sleep with most their weight on a smaller area. Those who are lighter than average or those in the market for lots of pressure relief might want to stick to the plusher models.

Those who sleep on their stomach should feel comfortable in the Midnight, particularly if this isn’t their main position or they have a tendency to change things up a lot. Firmer choices might be preferable for exclusive tummy sleepers so that they can ensure their hips do not dip and over-arch their backbone.

Last, Helix Sleep suggests Helix mattresses for sleepers up to 350 lbs or couples who weigh up to 250 lbs each. If you or your spouse are significantly bigger than average, Helix has also created a mattress called the Nightfall that is created to accommodate a combined weight of 1000 lbs.

Couples with differing body types or preferences may also select a dual comfort option that pairs Firm with Plush.

Bear in mind that if neither of these models sound quite right, you may always check out the 4 other mattresses in the newest collection: the Sunset (plush, softer than the Moonlight), Dusk (medium feel, slightly firmer compared to the Midnight), Twilight (firm, designed for side sleepers), or Dawn (the firmest option of the bunch).

Motion Transfer

Now, let us chat about motion transfer, or the amount of activity that is noticeable from one side of the bed to the other. While this is going to be crucial for all buyers, those who sleep with a spouse may find it particularly interesting as it will show just how bothered you’ll be by your bed mate’s nighttime movements. Helix Mattress Toxicity Score

According to my research, Helix Sleep exceeds expectations for hybrids in this space because of the quantity and quality of foam it incorporates, in addition to the pocketed coils that help trap motion at its source. If you’re a light sleeper afraid that movement from the other side of the bed will wake you, you should not have much concern with this hybrid. I would say that any of the Helix mattresses would be a good option for couples.

Sinkage

When getting a brand-new mattress, the majority of individuals want to know whether they’ll feel like they are sinking “into” the it or laying “on top” of it.

While you may encounter a little immediate sinkage in the uppermost foam layers, by the time you sink through those layers, you’ll find the individually-wrapped coils and find great support. This combo will interest a vast range of sleepers, but will satisfy back and stomach sleepers in particular.

Edge Support

Though I do feel the foam collapse as I sit near the edge of the mattress, the individually-wrapped coils stop the mattress from compressing too much beyond that. I feel very secured seated on the mattress.

In my view, Helix mattresses are well above average when it comes to edge support in comparison to other bed-in-a-box brands, which is due to their recently updated edges containing reinforcement in the coil system. There may be a little compression at the comfort foams when you sit with your entire weight on the side, but lying on the side should feel comfortable and safe. Partners who want more space to stretch out normally love strong edges.

Lying down, I also feel like I can get close to the edge of the mattress without feeling like I will roll off or be ejected from the mattress. Overall, I believe that the Helix has great edge support.

100 Night Sleep Trial

Among the best features of buying a mattress-in-a-box online is the sleep trials they typically come with. Helix Mattress is not any different. You create the mattress that is made for you, place your order, and in a couple of weeks, it is sent to your door. From the minute you click to buy the mattress, you have 100 nights to test it out (minus the time for delivery, so it’s more like 90 nights). If it is not perfect, you can return it free of charge, and get a complete refund.

Should you return the mattress, it isn’t restocked or resold. In fact, the company finds a local place to donate it. If there is no way the company can find a way to donate your refunded mattress, it’s recycled instead. Helix Mattress Toxicity Score

Helix Warranty

Helix offers an awesome 10-year guarantee that covers flaws, but it comes with a few limitations, exceptions, and the burden of proof is on the customer (like most warranties). Of course, you must be the first owner of the mattress to make use of the warranty, and you will need to be sure that you keep your receipt as proof of purchase.

Provided that you follow all of Helix’s expectations for use, your warranty is valid. That means you will need to use a suitable base (no adjustable bed frames or slats over 4″ apart) and you don’t use the mattress improperly – no jumping on the bed!

If your mattress starts to have an indentation of 1″ or more, something that usually happens when low-density foams break down, then you could qualify for a repair or replacement of your mattress.

What’s The Best Way To Care For Your Helix?

Helix mattresses need no turning, but it’s recommended that you rotate the mattress perhaps a couple of times a year to prevent it from wearing down from excessive sagging.

For routine cleaning, it is advised to use cool water with gentle dish soap to clean any stains or dirt. Be sure that you clean using soft circular movements, instead of rubbing.
