Helix Sleep markets hybrid mattresses manufactured with dual-layer covers, polyfoam comfort systems, and pocketed coil support cores enhanced using polyfoam base layers. Helix Mattress Test Review Youtube

Helix Sleep gives you complete mattress customization. Buyers are asked to fill out a survey that discusses their height, weight, firmness preferences, sleep position, and other options. Then based on these results, Helix Sleep will recommend one of the following 6 mattress options; each individual variant offers a unique combination of support and firmness:

  • Helix Sunset: ‘Soft’ firmness, targeted cushioning, and balanced support
  • Helix Moonlight: ‘Soft’ firmness, moderate cushioning, and extra support
  • Helix Midnight: ‘Medium’ firmness, targeted cushioning, and balanced support
  • Helix Dusk: ‘Medium’ firmness, moderate cushioning, and additional support
  • Helix Twilight: ‘Firm’ firmness, targeted cushioning, and balanced support
  • Helix Dawn: ‘Firm’ firmness, moderate cushioning, and extra support

Helix Sleep mattresses with targeted cushioning conform closely, making them optimal for those who sleep on their side. While those that have moderate cushioning do not conform as much and are suitable for all sleep positions. Lighter individuals may feel more comfy on models with balanced support, while those who weigh 130 pounds or more tend to prefer the models with extra support.

Helix Sleep also markets two models with dual-firmness, the Helix Dual Balanced (with balanced support and targeted cushioning) and the Helix Dual Extra (with additional support and moderate cushioning). Both of these models have one ‘Firm’ side and one ‘Soft’ side, which makes them ideal for couples with different tastes. Lastly, the Helix Nightfall is a hybrid developed for bigger, heavier individuals. This variant has an extra layer of memory foam for maximum support.

My review of Helix Sleep mattresses discovered that the customizable aspect accommodates sleepers with a large assortment of body types and firmness preferences. The mattresses also have strong edge support, isolate motion transfer well, and produce less noise than the average hybrid. Helix Mattress Test Review Youtube

Construction Helix Mattress Test Review Youtube

All nine of the various iterations of this mattress will differ slightly in construction, but for 6 of the 9 variants, the construction should be quite similar. The 6 core variants (listed above) are 10 inches tall, made up of 6 inches of pocketed coils and 4 inches of foam.

Helix mattresses vary in density and firmness based on the foams utilized in order to attain more/less support and more/less firmness. The 4 different foams used within Helix mattresses are high-grade polyurethane foam, memory foam, Helix Dynamic Foam, and a DuraDense Foam (aka support foam). Not all of the models have all of the foams – some just have 3 of the 4 – but it really won’t matter much for the purchaser. The foams are merely levers that Helix Sleep can pull in order to offer 9 different versions (and hopefully have a model for everyone). Helix Mattress Test Review Youtube

Below, I briefly discuss the construction (materials and quality) of the typical Helix mattress, the Helix Midnight.

helix-midnight-construction

Cover – Originally, all Helix mattresses come with the same cover, made of 100 percent polyester. I thought it to be stretchy and thin, allowing for some great breathability. However, if you want something more luxurious, you can choose to swap out the regular cover for the brand’s UltraCool one, which is composed of a phase-change fabric for temperature regulation.

Comfort Layer – On top, you will encounter a heavy layer of memory foam. This material has a slow response to pressure, which means you’re probably going to experience some great body shaping. Even though it may seem strange for a purportedly medium firmness mattress to make use of a memory foam layer, it is important to remember that the presence of deep sinkage does not necessarily translate to softness; in actuality, oftentimes it generates quite a firm feel.

Transition Layer – After sinking through the comfort layer, you’ll discover a transition layer of poly foam. This layer works to suppress the sinkage of the comfort layer and create a supportive, medium firm feeling as you hit the individually wrapped coils underneath.

Support Layer – The bulk of the mattress consists of this segment of individually wrapped coils. This system brings a supportive lift into the structure, working to position the sleeper “on top” of the mattress, as opposed to “in it”. Since the coils are individually wrapped, they are also likely to give extra breathability as air flows in between the spaces in the coils.

Base Layer – Last but not least, you’ll uncover a thin segment of high-density poly foam. This segment doesn’t affect the feel of the mattress too much, functioning mostly to provide the individually wrapped coils something off of which to react.

Firmness and Support

After having a look at the construction of the Helix mattresses, let’s discuss their varying firmness levels and feels.

The firmness level of the Helix is going to differ widely depending on which variant you select. The Helix Dusk and Midnight, have moderate firmness levels, which tends to be quite versatile and thus best-selling. If you have more specific needs, however, Helix Sleep will be happy to provide you with more options.

Lying down on the Midnight, the memory foam layer feels soft and generates some high quality body contouring, while the rest of the materials within the mattress work to control this and create an overall firmer structure. The firmer support foams and pocketed coils also help with re-positioning.

For back sleepers, there is just enough good comfort material here to conform to your lower spine while supporting your back in a neutral position. For heavier buyers or people who prefer a firmer bed, there are 2 more options for you in the Helix Dawn and Helix Twilight variants.

Many side sleepers will feel perfectly comfy on the Midnight, but, if you are needing a bit less pressure while still going with a versatile medium firmness, you may want to check out the Helix Dusk, which uses a body-conforming latex-alternative foam that is breathable and gives the surface a little bit of bounce.

Those who sleep on their side typically have to be mindful of pressure because they sleep with most their weight on a tinier area. Those who are smaller than average or people in the market for lots of pressure relief might want to stay with the plusher models.

Stomach sleepers should feel supported in the Midnight, especially if this isn’t their main position or they tend to change things up a lot. Firmer choices may be preferable for exclusive tummy sleepers so that they can make sure their hips do not dip and over-arch their spine.

Lastly, Helix Sleep suggests Helix mattresses for sleepers up to 350 pounds or partners who weigh up to 250 pounds each. In the event you or your partner are significantly larger than average, Helix has also created a mattress called the Nightfall that’s built to accommodate a total weight of 1000 pounds.

Couples with different body types or preferences may also select a dual comfort option that pairs Firm with Plush.

Keep in mind that if none of those models seem right, you could always have a look at the 4 other beds in the new collection: the Sunset (plush, softer compared to the Moonlight), Dusk (moderate feel, a little firmer compared to the Midnight), Twilight (firm, made for side sleepers), or Dawn (the firmest option in the collection).

Motion Transfer

Now, let us chat about motion transfer, or the amount of disturbance that’s detectable from one side of the mattress to the other. While this is going to be important for all buyers, those who sleep with a partner may find it especially intriguing as it will show just how bothered you’ll be by your partner’s nighttime movements. Helix Mattress Test Review Youtube

Based on my observation, Helix exceeds expectations for hybrids in this space because of the quantity and quality of foam it incorporates, in addition to the pocketed coils which help trap motion at its source. If you’re a light sleeper concerned that movement from the opposite side of the bed will bother you, then you should not have a lot of concern with this hybrid. I’d say that any of the Helix mattresses are a good choice for couples.

Sinkage

While buying a new mattress, the majority of individuals wish to know whether they’ll feel like they’re sinking “into” the it or laying “on top” of it.

While you may experience some immediate sinkage from the soft foam at the top, by the time you sink through these layers, you will hit the individually-wrapped coils and experience amazing support. This combo will interest a wide assortment of individuals, but will satisfy back and stomach sleepers the most.

Edge Support

While I do feel the foam collapse as I sit close to the edge of the Helix Midnight, the coils stop the mattress from compressing a lot . I feel very secure seated on the mattress.

In my opinion, Helix mattresses are well above average when it comes to edge support in comparison to other bed-in-a-box brands, which is due to their recently updated edges that contain reinforcement in the coil unit. There may be a little compression at the comfort foams when you sit with your entire weight on the side, but lying on the side should feel comfy and safe. Couples who want more space to stretch out typically appreciate stronger edges.

Laying down, I feel like I could get close to the edge of the bed without feeling like I’ll fall off or be ejected from the mattress. Overall, I believe that the Helix mattress has nice edge support.

100 Night Sleep Trial

One of the best features of buying a mattress-in-a-box online is the sleep trials that they typically come with. Helix Sleep is no different. You create the mattress that’s intended for you, place your order, and in 2 weeks, it is sent to your home. From the moment you click to order the mattress, you have 100 nights to check it out (minus the time for delivery, so it’s more like 90 nights). If it isn’t what you wanted, you can return it free of charge, and get a full refund.

Should you return the mattress, it is not resold or restocked. Actually, the company finds a local place to donate it. If there’s no way Helix can find a way to donate your refunded mattress, it’s recycled instead. Helix Mattress Test Review Youtube

Helix Warranty

The Helix Mattress includes a generous 10-year guarantee that covers defects, but it comes with limitations, exceptions, while the burden of proof is on the consumer (like most warranties). Of course, you must be the original owner of the mattress to use the warranty, and you will need to be sure that you keep your receipt as proof of purchase.

As long as you follow all of the manufacturer’s expectations for use, your warranty is valid. That means you need to have a suitable foundation (no adjustable bed frames or slats more than 4 inches apart) and that you don’t use the Helix improperly – no jumping on the bed!

If your mattress begins to show an indentation of 1 inch or more, something that typically happens when low-density foams break down, you could qualify for a replacement or repair of your Helix.

What’s The Best Way To Care For Your Helix?

Helix mattresses require no flipping, but it is suggested that you rotate the mattress possibly once or twice a year to keep it from wearing down from excessive sagging.

For regular cleaning, it is advised to use cold water with gentle dish soap to clean any stains or dirt. Make sure that you wash using gentle circular motions, instead of rubbing.
