Helix Sleep sells hybrid mattresses made with dual-layer covers, polyfoam comfort systems, and pocketed coil support cores fortified using polyfoam base layers. Helix Mattress Opening

Helix Sleep gives you complete mattress customization. Buyers are requested to complete a questionnaire that discusses their weight, height, firmness preferences, sleep position, and other options. Then based on these answers, Helix Sleep will recommend one of the following 6 mattress options; each individual model gives a unique combination of support and firmness:

  • Helix Sunset: ‘Soft’ firmness, targeted cushioning, and balanced support
  • Helix Moonlight: ‘Soft’ firmness, moderate cushioning, and additional support
  • Helix Midnight: ‘Medium’ firmness, targeted cushioning, and balanced support
  • Helix Dusk: ‘Medium’ firmness, moderate cushioning, and additional support
  • Helix Twilight: ‘Firm’ firmness, targeted cushioning, and balanced support
  • Helix Dawn: ‘Firm’ firmness, moderate cushioning, and extra support

Helix Sleep hybrids that have targeted cushioning conform closely, which makes them perfect for side sleepers. While mattresses with moderate cushioning do not conform as much and are ideal for pretty much all sleep positions. Lighter people may feel most comfy on models with balanced support, while those that weigh 130 pounds or more tend to favor the models with extra support.

Helix Sleep also markets two variants with dual-firmness, the Helix Dual Balanced (with balanced support and targeted cushioning) and the Helix Dual Extra (with additional support and moderate cushioning). Both of these mattresses have one ‘Firm’ side and one ‘Soft’ side, making them great for couples with different tastes. Last, the Helix Nightfall is a hybrid designed for bigger, heavier people. This variant has an extra layer of memory foam for optimum support.

My review of Helix Sleep mattresses discovered that the customizable aspect conforms to sleepers with a large range of firmness preferences and body types. The mattresses also provide strong edge support, isolate movement well, and create less noise than the average hybrid. Helix Mattress Opening

Construction Helix Mattress Opening

All 9 of the various iterations of this mattress will differ slightly in construction, but for 6 of the 9 models, the construction should be fairly similar. The six core models (listed above) are 10 inches tall, made up of 6 inches of pocketed coils and 4 inches of foam.

Helix mattresses vary in firmness and density based upon the foams used in order to achieve more/less firmness and more/less support. The four unique foams used within Helix mattresses are memory foam, high-grade polyurethane foam, Helix Dynamic Foam, and a DuraDense Foam (aka support foam). Not all the mattresses have all of the foams – some only have three of the four – but it really won’t matter much for the purchaser. The foams are just levers that Helix Sleep can pull in order to offer 9 different versions (and hopefully have a mattress for everybody). Helix Mattress Opening

Below, I concisely discuss the construction (materials and quality) of your typical Helix mattress, the Helix Midnight.

helix-midnight-construction

Cover – Initially, all Helix mattresses come with exactly the same cover, made of 100% polyester. I found it to be thin and pliable, allowing for some wonderful breathability. However, if you would like something more amped up, you can opt to swap out the standard cover for the UltraCool one, which is made up of a phase change material to regulate heat.

Comfort Layer – Up top, you’ll find a heavy layer of memory foam. This type of foam has a slow reaction to pressure, meaning you are likely to experience some gratifying body shaping. While it might seem strange for a supposedly medium firmness bed to make use of a memory foam layer, it is important to remember that the presence of deep sinkage doesn’t necessarily translate to softness; in actuality, most of the time it produces quite a firm feel.

Transition Layer – After getting past the memory foam comfort layer, you’ll find a transition layer of poly foam. This layer of foam works to curb the sinkage of the comfort layer and create a supportive, medium firm feel as you hit the pocketed coils below.

Support Layer – The bulk of the mattress consists of this section of individually wrapped coils. This system brings a supportive lift to the structure, working to put the sleeper “on top” of the bed, instead of “in it”. Since the coils are individually wrapped, they’re also going to give extra breathability as air flows in between the spaces in the coils.

Base Layer – Last but not least, you’ll find a thin segment of high-density poly foam. This segment doesn’t affect the feel of the bed too much, functioning mostly to give the individually wrapped coils something off of which to respond.

Firmness and Support

After taking a look at the construction of the Helix mattresses, let’s talk about their varying firmness levels and feels.

helix-mattress-firmness-and-support-scale

The firmness level of the Helix is going to vary widely depending on which version you select. The Helix Midnight and Dusk, have medium firmness levels, which is going to be very versatile and thus best-selling. If you have more specific preferences, however, Helix Sleep would be happy to provide you with more choices.

Lying down on the Helix Midnight, the uppermost foam layer is soft and produces some high quality body contouring, while the rest of the materials within the Midnight work to control this and create an overall firmer composition. The firmer support foams and individually-wrapped coils also help with re-positioning.

For back sleepers, there’s enough good comfort material here to conform to your lumbar while supporting your whole upper spine in a neutral position. For larger sleepers or those who prefer a firmer mattress, there are two more models for you in the Helix Dawn and Helix Twilight variants.

Many side sleepers will feel totally comfy on the Midnight, but, if you are needing less pressure while still sticking with a flexible medium firmness, you might decide to take a look at the Helix Dusk, which utilizes a body-conforming latex-alternative foam that is breathable and gives the surface a little bit of bounce.

Those who sleep on their side typically need to be more mindful of pressure since they sleep with all of their weight on a tinier region. Those who are lighter than average or people looking for lots of pressure relief might want to stick to the plusher variants.

Those who sleep on their stomach should feel supported in the Midnight, especially if this is not their main position or they tend to change things up a lot. Firmer mattresses might be preferable for exclusive stomach sleepers so that they can ensure their hips don’t dip and over-arch their spine.

Lastly, Helix Sleep recommends Helix mattresses for sleepers around 350 lbs or couples who weigh up to 250 lbs each. In the event you or your spouse are substantially larger than average, the company has also created a mattress called the Nightfall that is created to accommodate a combined weight of 1000 lbs.

Couples with different types of bodies or preferences may also pick a dual comfort variant that pairs Firm with Plush.

Keep in mind that if none of these models feel quite right, you can always have a look at the 4 other variants in the newest collection: the Sunset (plush, softer than the Moonlight), Dusk (moderate feel, a little firmer compared to the Midnight), Twilight (firm, made for side sleepers), or Dawn (the firmest option in the line).

Motion Transfer

Now, let’s chat about motion transfer, or the amount of activity that’s detectable from one side of the bed to the other. While this is going to be crucial for many buyers, those who doze with a spouse may find it particularly intriguing as it will show just how bothered you may be by your bed mate’s nighttime movements. Helix Mattress Opening

Based on my observation, Helix Sleep surpasses expectations for hybrid mattresses in this space due to the amount and quality of foam it incorporates, in addition to the individually wrapped coils which help keep motion at its source. If you’re a light sleeper afraid that motion from the opposite side of the bed will bother you, then you should not have a lot of concern with this mattress. I would say that all of the Helix mattresses would be a good option for couples.

Sinkage

While buying a new mattress, most men and women would like to know whether they’ll feel as though they’re sinking “into” the mattress or laying “on top” of it.

While you’re likely to experience a little immediate sinkage in the soft foam at the top, by the time you sink through these layers, you’ll find the individually-wrapped coils and experience fantastic support. This combination will appeal to a wide range of sleepers, but will suit stomach and back sleepers in particular.

Edge Support

Though I do feel the memory foam collapse as I sit near the edge of the Helix Midnight, the coils prevent the mattress from compressing too much beyond that. I feel quite secure seated on the bed.

In my view, Helix mattresses are well above average for edge support compared to other bed-in-a-box brands, and this is due to their freshly updated edges containing reinforcement in the coil system. There may be a little compression in the comfort foams when you sit with all your weight on the side, but lying on the side should feel comfortable and safe. Partners who need more space to stretch out normally love stronger edges.

Lying down, I also feel like I can get near the edge of the mattress without feeling like I’ll roll off or be ejected from the bed. Overall, I think that the Helix mattress has nice edge support.

100 Night Sleep Trial

One of the best features of buying a bed-in-a-box online is the sleep trials they usually come with. Helix Sleep is not any different. You customize the mattress that is intended for you, place your order, and within 2 weeks, it’s delivered to your home. From the minute you click to purchase the mattress, you have 100 nights to check it out (minus the time for delivery, so it is more like 90 nights). If it is not ideal, you can return it for free of charge, and get a complete refund.

If you do return the mattress, it is not resold or restocked. In fact, the company finds a local place to donate it. When there is no way Helix can find a way to donate your refunded mattress, it is recycled instead. Helix Mattress Opening

Helix Warranty

The Helix Mattress includes an awesome 10-year guarantee that covers defects, but it has a few limitations, exceptions, and the burden of proof is on the consumer (like most warranties). Of course, you must be the original owner of the Helix to make use of the guarantee, and you will need to be sure you keep your receipt as proof of purchase.

Provided that you follow all of Helix’s expectations for use, your warranty is valid. That means you will need to have a proper foundation (no adjustable bed frames or slats more than 4 inches apart) and that you don’t use the Helix improperly – no jumping on it!

If your mattress begins to have an indentation of 1 inch or more, which is what usually happens when low-density foams break down, you could be eligible for a replacement or repair of your Helix.

What’s The Best Way To Care For Your Helix?

Helix mattresses require no flipping, but it’s suggested that you rotate the mattress perhaps a couple of times a year to prevent it from wearing down from excessive sagging.

For regular cleaning, it is advised to use cool water with gentle dish soap to clean any dirt or stains. Make sure that you wash using gentle circular movements, instead of rubbing.
