Helix Sleep markets hybrid mattresses manufactured with dual-layer covers, polyfoam comfort systems, and pocketed coil support cores reinforced with polyfoam base layers. Helix Mattress Measurements

Helix Sleep allows full mattress customization. Purchasers are requested to complete a questionnaire that asks for their height, weight, sleep position, firmness preferences, and other factors. Then based on these results, Helix Sleep will recommend one of the following six mattress models; each individual model gives a unique combination of support and firmness:

  • Helix Sunset: ‘Soft’ firmness, targeted cushioning, and balanced support
  • Helix Moonlight: ‘Soft’ firmness, moderate cushioning, and additional support
  • Helix Midnight: ‘Medium’ firmness, targeted cushioning, and balanced support
  • Helix Dusk: ‘Medium’ firmness, moderate cushioning, and additional support
  • Helix Twilight: ‘Firm’ firmness, targeted cushioning, and balanced support
  • Helix Dawn: ‘Firm’ firmness, moderate cushioning, and additional support

Helix Sleep hybrids with targeted cushioning conform closely, which makes them perfect for side sleepers. While hybrids with moderate cushioning do not conform as much and are great for all sleep positions. Lighter men and women may feel most comfortable on variants with balanced support, while individuals that weigh 130 pounds or more often prefer the variants with additional support.

Helix Sleep also offers two models with dual-firmness, the Helix Dual Balanced (with targeted cushioning and balanced support) and the Helix Dual Extra (with moderate cushioning and additional support). Both these mattresses have one ‘Soft’ side and one ‘Firm’ side, making them great for couples with differing preferences. Last, the Helix Nightfall is a hybrid designed for larger, heavier people. This variant has an additional layer of memory foam for optimum support.

My review of Helix Sleep mattresses discovered that the customizable aspect conforms to sleepers with a large range of firmness preferences and body types. The mattresses also provide strong edge support, isolate movement well, and create less noise than the average hybrid. Helix Mattress Measurements

Construction Helix Mattress Measurements

All nine of the various iterations of this mattress will differ slightly in construction, but for 6 of the 9 variants, the construction should be quite similar. The 6 core models (listed above) are 10 inches tall, composed of 6 inches of pocketed coils and 4 inches of foam.

Helix mattresses differ in firmness and density based upon the foams used in order to achieve more/less support and more/less firmness. The 4 different foams utilized within Helix mattresses are high-grade polyurethane foam, memory foam, Helix Dynamic Foam, and a DuraDense Foam (aka support foam). Not all of the mattresses have all of the foams – some just have 3 of the 4 – but it really won’t matter much for the consumer. The foams are merely levers that Helix Sleep can pull in order to offer nine unique mattresses (and hopefully have a model for everybody). Helix Mattress Measurements

Below, I concisely discuss the construction (materials and quality) of the typical Helix mattress, the Helix Midnight.

helix-midnight-construction

Cover – Originally, all Helix mattresses have exactly the same cover, made of 100% polyester. I thought it to be pliable and thin, allowing for some great breathability. However, if you would like something more amped up, you can opt to swap out the regular cover for the UltraCool one, which is made up of a phase-change fabric to regulate temperature.

Comfort Layer – Up top, you’ll find a thick layer of memory foam. This material has a slow reaction to pressure, meaning you’re probably going to experience some great body contouring. Even though it may seem strange for a purportedly medium firm mattress to incorporate a memory foam comfort layer, it’s important to remember that the feeling of deep sinkage doesn’t always translate to softness; in fact, oftentimes it produces quite a firm feel.

Transition Layer – After getting past the comfort layer, you will uncover a transition layer of poly foam. This layer of foam works to suppress the sinkage of the comfort layer and establish a supportive, medium firm feeling as you hit the individually wrapped coils below.

Support Layer – The bulk of the mattress is made up of this section of pocketed coils. This system gives a supportive lift into the structure, working to put the sleeper “on top” of the mattress, as opposed to “in it”. Because the coils are individually wrapped, they’re also going to give extra breathability as air flows through the spaces in the coils.

Base Layer – Lastly, you will discover a thin section of high-density poly foam. This segment does not really affect the feel of the mattress too much, working mostly to provide the pocketed coils something off of which to respond.

Firmness and Support

After having a peek at the construction of the Helix mattresses, let’s discuss their varying feels and firmness levels.

helix-mattress-firmness-and-support-scale

The firmness of the Helix will differ widely depending on which variant you pick out. The Helix Dusk and Midnight, have medium firmness levels, which will be quite versatile and thus best-selling. If you have more specific requirements, however, Helix Sleep will be happy to provide you with more options.

Lying down on the Midnight, the uppermost foam comfort layer is soft and produces some top quality body contouring, while the other materials within the Midnight work to control this and make an overall firmer composition. The firmer support foams and individually-wrapped coils also help with re-positioning.

For those who sleep on their back, there’s enough good comfort material in the Midnight to conform to your lumbar while supporting your whole upper spine in a neutral position. For heavier buyers or those who want a firmer mattress, there are two more options for you in the Helix Twilight and Helix Dawn variants.

Many side sleepers will feel perfectly comfortable on the Midnight, however, if you’re needing a bit less pressure while still sticking with a flexible medium firmness, you may want to take a look at the Helix Dusk, which uses a body-conforming latex-alternative foam that’s breathable and gives the surface a small bit of bounce.

Those who sleep on their side typically need to be mindful of pressure because they sleep with most of their weight on a tinier area. People who are lighter than average or those looking for plenty of pressure relief might want to stay with the plusher variants.

Those who sleep on their stomach will feel supported in the Midnight, especially if this is not their primary position or they have a tendency to change things up a lot. Firmer choices may be preferable for exclusive tummy sleepers so that they can ensure their hips do not dip and over-arch their spine.

Last, Helix Sleep suggests Helix for sleepers around 350 lbs or partners that weigh up to 250 lbs each. In the event you or your spouse are substantially bigger than average, the company has also produced a mattress called the Nightfall that’s constructed to accommodate a combined weight of 1000 lbs.

Partners with differing body types or preferences may also select a dual comfort option that pairs Firm with Plush.

Keep in mind that if none of these options feel right, you can always check out the 4 other mattresses in the newest collection: the Sunset (plush, softer than the Moonlight), Dusk (moderate feel, slightly firmer than the Midnight), Twilight (firm, made for side sleepers), or Dawn (the firmest option in the collection).

Motion Transfer

Next up, let’s talk about motion transfer, or the amount of activity that’s detectable from 1 side of the bed to the other. While this will be important for all people, those who doze with a partner may find it particularly intriguing as it will illuminate just how bothered you will be by your bed mate’s nighttime movements. Helix Mattress Measurements

Based on my observation, Helix surpasses expectations for hybrids in this space because of the amount and quality of foam it incorporates, as well as the individually wrapped coils which help trap motion at its source. If you are a light sleeper worried that movement from the other side of the bed will bother you, then you should not have much concern with this mattress. I’d say that all of the Helix mattresses are a good option for couples.

Sinkage

When buying a new mattress, the majority of individuals want to know whether they will feel as though they’re sinking “into” the mattress or laying “on top” of it.

While you are going to encounter a little immediate sinkage from the uppermost foam layers, when you sink through these layers, you’ll find the individually-wrapped coils and feel amazing support. This combination will interest a vast range of individuals, but will satisfy stomach and back sleepers in particular.

Edge Support

While I do feel the foam compress as I sit near the edge of the Helix Midnight, the individually-wrapped coils prevent the mattress from collapsing too much . I feel quite secure sitting on the mattress.

In my opinion, Helix mattresses perform above average for edge support compared to other bed-in-a-box brands, and this is because of their recently updated edges containing reinforcement in the coil unit. There may be some compression in the comfort foams when you sit with all your weight on the side, but laying on the side should feel comfortable and safe. Couples who want more space to stretch out normally love stronger edges.

Laying down, I also feel like I could get close to the edge of the mattress without feeling like I’ll roll off or be ejected from the bed. Overall, I think that the Helix mattress has great edge support.

100 Night Sleep Trial

Among the best features of purchasing a bed-in-a-box online is the sleep trials they typically include. Helix is not any different. You customize the mattress that is made for you, place your order, and in a couple of weeks, it is sent to your door. From the minute you click to purchase the mattress, you’ve got 100 nights to try it out (minus the time for delivery, so it’s more like 90 nights). If it isn’t perfect, you can return it for free of charge, and receive a complete refund.

Should you return the mattress, it isn’t resold or restocked. Actually, the company does its best to find a local place to donate it. If there is no way Helix Sleep can find a way to donate your refunded mattress, it’s recycled instead. Helix Mattress Measurements

Helix Warranty

Helix Sleep offers an awesome 10-year guarantee that covers defects, but it comes with limitations, exceptions, plus the burden of proof is on the customer (like most warranties). Needless to say, you should be the first owner of the Helix to make use of the guarantee, and you will need to be sure you save your receipt as proof of purchase.

Provided that you follow all Helix’s expectations for use, your warranty is valid. That means you need to use a proper base (no adjustable bed frames or slats more than 4″ apart) and that you don’t use the Helix improperly – no jumping on the bed!

If your mattress starts to have an indentation of 1 inch or more, something that typically happens when low-density foams break down, you could be eligible for a repair or replacement of your Helix.

What’s The Best Way To Care For Your Helix?

Helix mattresses require no flipping, but it’s recommended that you rotate the mattress possibly once or twice a year to prevent it from wearing down from excess sagging.

For regular cleanup, it is suggested to use cool water along gentle dish detergent to clean any stains or dirt. Be sure that you wash using soft circular movements, instead of rubbing.
