Helix Sleep markets hybrid mattresses made with polyfoam comfort systems, dual-layer covers, and pocketed coil support cores reinforced using polyfoam base layers. Helix Mattress Funding

Helix Sleep offers full mattress customization. Buyers are asked to complete a survey that asks for their weight, height, sleep position, firmness preferences, and other factors. Based on these answers, Helix Sleep will recommend one of the following 6 mattress models; each respective model gives a unique combination of firmness and support:

  • Helix Sunset: ‘Soft’ firmness, targeted cushioning, and balanced support
  • Helix Moonlight: ‘Soft’ firmness, moderate cushioning, and additional support
  • Helix Midnight: ‘Medium’ firmness, targeted cushioning, and balanced support
  • Helix Dusk: ‘Medium’ firmness, moderate cushioning, and additional support
  • Helix Twilight: ‘Firm’ firmness, targeted cushioning, and balanced support
  • Helix Dawn: ‘Firm’ firmness, moderate cushioning, and additional support

Helix Sleep mattresses with targeted cushioning conform closely, making them optimal for side sleepers. While mattresses that have moderate cushioning do not conform as much and are great for pretty much all sleep positions. Lighter men and women may feel more comfy on models with balanced support, while those that weigh 130 pounds or more often favor the models with extra support.

Helix Sleep also markets two mattresses with dual-firmness, the Helix Dual Balanced (with balanced support and targeted cushioning) and the Helix Dual Extra (with additional support and moderate cushioning). Both of these models have one ‘Soft’ side and one ‘Firm’ side, which makes them great for couples with different preferences. Last, the Helix Nightfall is a hybrid designed for larger, heavier people. This variant has an additional layer of memory foam for optimum support.

My review of Helix Sleep mattresses found that the customizable selection conforms to sleepers with a large range of firmness preferences and body types. The mattresses also have strong edge support, isolate motion transfer nicely, and create less noise than the average hybrid. Helix Mattress Funding

Construction Helix Mattress Funding

All 9 of the different iterations of this mattress will differ slightly in construction, but for 6 of the 9 variants, the construction should be fairly similar. The six core variants (listed above) are 10 inches tall, made up of 6 inches of pocketed coils and 4 inches of foam.

Helix mattresses vary in density and firmness depending upon the foams used in order to achieve more/less support and more/less firmness. The 4 unique foams used within Helix mattresses are high-grade polyurethane foam, memory foam, Helix Dynamic Foam, and a DuraDense Foam (aka support foam). Not all of the models have all of the foams – some just have three of the four – but it really shouldn’t matter much for the consumer. The foams are just levers that Helix Sleep can pull to be able to offer 9 distinct variants (and supposedly have a model for everyone). Helix Mattress Funding

Underneath, I quickly talk about the construction (materials and quality) of the average Helix mattress, the Helix Midnight.

Cover – Originally, all Helix mattresses come with exactly the same cover, made of 100% polyester. I thought it to be stretchy and thin, allowing for some nice breathability. However, if you want something more luxurious, you can choose to swap out the regular cover for the brand’s UltraCool one, which is composed of a phase-change material for temperature regulation.

Comfort Layer – Up top, you’ll discover a thick layer of memory foam. This material has a slow reaction to pressure, which means you are likely to encounter some gratifying body contouring. While it might seem strange for a purportedly medium firm mattress to feature a memory foam layer, it is crucial to remember that the feeling of deep sinkage does not necessarily translate to softness; in actuality, oftentimes it produces quite a firm feeling.

Transition Layer – After getting past the comfort layer, you will uncover a transition layer of poly foam. This layer of foam works to suppress the sinkage of the comfort layer and create a supportive, medium firm feel as you reach the individually wrapped coils underneath.

Support Layer – The majority of the mattress is made up of this section of individually wrapped coils. This system brings a supportive lift to the structure, working to position the sleeper “on top” of the bed, as opposed to “in it”. Since these coils are individually wrapped, they’re also likely to encourage extra breathability as air flows through the spaces in the coils.

Base Layer – Last, you will find a thin section of high-density poly foam. This segment doesn’t really affect the feel of the bed too much, working mostly to provide the individually wrapped coils something off of which to respond.

Firmness and Support

After having a peek at the construction of the Helix mattresses, let us talk about their different feels and firmness levels.

helix-mattress-firmness-and-support-scale

The firmness level of the Helix will differ widely depending on which version you pick out. The Helix Midnight and Dusk, have medium firmness levels, which tends to be quite versatile and therefore exceptionally popular. If you have more specific preferences, however, Helix Sleep will be happy to oblige you with additional choices.

Lying down on the Helix Midnight, the memory foam comfort layer is soft and produces some high quality body shaping, while the rest of the materials in the mattress work to counteract this and create an overall firmer structure. The firmer support foams and individually-wrapped coils also help with re-positioning.

For back sleepers, there’s just enough good comfort material in the Helix Midnight to conform to your lower spine while supporting your whole upper spine in a neutral position. For heavier sleepers or those who prefer a firmer mattress, there are two more models for you in the Helix Twilight and Helix Dawn models.

Majority of side sleepers should feel perfectly comfortable on the Midnight, but, if you’re needing a bit less pressure while still sticking with a versatile medium firmness, you might want to check out the Helix Dusk, which utilizes a body-conforming latex-alternative foam that is breathable and provides the surface a small bit of bounce.

Side sleepers typically need to be mindful of pressure because they sleep with all of their weight on a tinier area. People who are lighter than average or people looking for a lot of pressure relief may want to stick to the plusher variants.

Those who sleep on their stomach will feel comfortable in the Midnight, particularly if this is not their primary position or they have a tendency to switch things up a lot. Firmer mattresses may be preferable for exclusive stomach sleepers so they can ensure their hips don’t dip and over-arch their back.

Lastly, Helix Sleep recommends Helix for sleepers around 350 pounds or couples that weigh a maximum of 250 pounds each. If you or your spouse are significantly bigger than average, the company has also created a bed called the Nightfall that is created to accommodate a total weight of 1000 pounds.

Partners with differing body types or preferences may also pick a dual comfort variant that combines Firm with Plush.

Bear in mind that if none of these options seem right, you could always have a look at the four other models in the new collection: the Sunset (plush, softer compared to the Moonlight), Dusk (moderate feel, slightly firmer than the Midnight), Twilight (firm, designed for side sleepers), or Dawn (the firmest option of the bunch).

Motion Transfer

Now, let’s chat about motion transfer, or the amount of activity that is detectable from one side of the bed to the other. While this will be crucial for all buyers, those who sleep with a partner may find it particularly intriguing as it will show just how bothered you will be by your partner’s nighttime movements. Helix Mattress Funding

Based on my observation, Helix Sleep exceeds expectations for hybrid mattresses in this space because of the amount and quality of foam it incorporates, in addition to the pocketed coils which help keep motion at its source. If you are a light sleeper concerned that movement from the opposite side of the mattress will bother you, then you shouldn’t have a lot of concern with this hybrid. I’d say that any of the Helix mattresses would be a good choice for couples.

Sinkage

When getting a brand-new mattress, most men and women want to know whether they will feel as though they’re sinking “into” the mattress or laying “on top” of it.

While you may encounter some immediate sinkage in the soft foam on top, by the time you sink through these layers, you are going to hit the pocketed coils and find great support. This combo will interest a wide assortment of individuals, but will satisfy stomach and back sleepers in particular.

Edge Support

While I do feel the foam compress as I sit close to the edge of the mattress, the coils stop the mattress from collapsing too much beyond that. I feel quite secure sitting on the mattress.

In my view, Helix mattresses perform above average for edge support in comparison to other bed-in-a-box brands, and this is due to their newly updated edges that contain reinforcement in the coil system. There may be some compression in the comfort foams when you sit with your entire weight on the side, but lying on the side will feel comfy and safe. Couples who want more space to stretch out typically appreciate strong edges.

Lying down, I also feel like I could get close to the edge of the bed without feeling like I’ll fall over or be pushed off the mattress. Overall, I think the Helix mattress has nice edge support.

100 Night Sleep Trial

Among the best features of purchasing a bed-in-a-box online is the sleep trials that they typically include. Helix Sleep is no different. You customize the mattress that is meant for you, place your order, and within 2 weeks, it’s sent to your home. From the minute you click to purchase the mattress, you have 100 nights to test it out (minus the time for delivery, so it is more like 90 nights). If it isn’t ideal, you can return it free of charge, and get a full refund.

Should you return the mattress, it isn’t restocked or resold. In fact, the company locates a local place to donate it. When there’s no way Helix Sleep can find a way to donate your refunded mattress, it’s recycled instead. Helix Mattress Funding

Helix Warranty

The Helix Mattress includes an amazing 10-year warranty that covers flaws, but it comes with limitations, exceptions, and the burden of proof is on the customer (like most guarantees ). Of course, you should be the original owner of the Helix to use the warranty, and you need to be sure you save your receipt as proof of purchase.

Provided that you follow all the manufacturer’s expectations for use, your warranty should be valid. That means you will need to use a proper base (no adjustable bed frames or slats more than 4 inches apart) and you don’t use the mattress improperly – no jumping on the bed!

If your mattress starts to show an indentation of 1 inch or longer, which is what typically happens when low-density foams break down, then you could qualify for a replacement or repair of your mattress.

What’s The Best Way To Care For Your Helix?

Helix mattresses require no turning, but it is recommended that you rotate the mattress perhaps once or twice a year to prevent it from wearing down from excessive sagging.

For routine cleaning, it’s suggested to use cool water with gentle dish detergent to clean any stains or dirt. Make sure to clean using gentle circular movements, instead of rubbing.
