Helix Sleep sells hybrid mattresses manufactured with polyfoam comfort systems, dual-layer covers, and pocketed coil support cores reinforced using polyfoam base layers. Helix Mattress Free Topper

Helix Sleep offers complete mattress customization. Customers are requested to fill out a survey that discusses their height, weight, sleep position, firmness preferences, and other options. Then based on these results, Helix Sleep will recommend one of the following six mattress models; each individual model gives a unique combination of support and firmness:

  • Helix Sunset: ‘Soft’ firmness, targeted cushioning, and balanced support
  • Helix Moonlight: ‘Soft’ firmness, moderate cushioning, and extra support
  • Helix Midnight: ‘Medium’ firmness, targeted cushioning, and balanced support
  • Helix Dusk: ‘Medium’ firmness, moderate cushioning, and additional support
  • Helix Twilight: ‘Firm’ firmness, targeted cushioning, and balanced support
  • Helix Dawn: ‘Firm’ firmness, moderate cushioning, and additional support

Helix Sleep mattresses that have targeted cushioning conform closely, which makes them optimal for side sleepers. While mattresses with moderate cushioning do not conform as much and are great for pretty much all sleep positions. Lighter people may feel most comfy on variants with balanced support, while people who weigh 130 lbs or more often prefer the variants with additional support.

Helix Sleep also markets two mattresses with dual-firmness, the Helix Dual Balanced (with targeted cushioning and balanced support) and the Helix Dual Extra (with moderate cushioning and extra support). Both of these mattresses have one ‘Soft’ side and one ‘Firm’ side, which makes them great for couples with differing tastes. Last, the Helix Nightfall is a hybrid developed for bigger, heavier individuals. This variant has an additional layer of memory foam for maximum support.

My review of Helix Sleep mattresses discovered that the customizable aspect accommodates sleepers with a wide range of body types and firmness preferences. The mattresses also offer strong edge support, isolate movement nicely, and create less noise than the normal hybrid. Helix Mattress Free Topper

Construction Helix Mattress Free Topper

All 9 of the different iterations of this mattress will differ slightly in construction, but for 6 of the 9 variants, the construction will be fairly similar. The six core models (listed above) are 10 inches tall, composed of 6 inches of pocketed coils and 4 inches of foam.

Helix mattresses differ in density and firmness based upon the foams used in order to attain more/less firmness and more/less support. The 4 different foams used within Helix mattresses are memory foam, high-grade polyurethane foam, Helix Dynamic Foam, and a DuraDense Foam (aka support foam). Not all the mattresses have all of the foams – some just have three of the four – but it really won’t matter much for the buyer. The foams are merely levers that Helix Sleep can pull in order to offer 9 distinct mattresses (and supposedly have a model for everyone). Helix Mattress Free Topper

Below, I quickly discuss the construction (materials and quality) of your average Helix mattress, the Helix Midnight.

helix-midnight-construction

Cover – Initially, all Helix mattresses come with exactly the same cover, made of 100% polyester. I thought it to be thin and pliable, allowing for some great breathability. But, if you prefer something more luxurious, you can opt to swap out the regular cover for the UltraCool one, which is made up of a phase change material for heat regulation.

Comfort Layer – On top, you’ll discover a thick layer of memory foam. This material has a slow reaction to pressure, meaning you are probably going to experience some great body shaping. While it might seem strange for a supposedly medium firmness mattress to feature a memory foam layer, it’s important to remember that the presence of deep sinkage does not always translate to softness; in actuality, most of the time it generates quite a firm feel.

Transition Layer – After sinking through the comfort layer, you will uncover a transition layer of poly foam. This layer of foam works to suppress the sinkage of the comfort layer and establish a supportive, medium firm feeling as you reach the individually wrapped coils below.

Support Layer – Most of the mattress is made up of this segment of pocketed coils. This system brings a supportive lift into the construction, working to put the sleeper “on top” of the bed, instead of “in it”. Because these coils are individually wrapped, they’re also going to allow additional breathability as air flows through the spaces in the coils.

Base Layer – Lastly, you’ll find a thin section of high-density poly foam. This section doesn’t really affect the feel of the bed too much, functioning mostly to give the pocketed coils something off of which to respond.

Firmness and Support

After having a look at the construction of the Helix mattresses, let’s discuss their different feels and firmness levels.

helix-mattress-firmness-and-support-scale

The firmness of the Helix is going to vary widely depending on which model you pick out. The Helix Dusk and Midnight, have moderate firmness levels, which is going to be quite versatile and therefore exceptionally popular. If you have more specific needs, however, Helix Sleep would be happy to provide you with additional options.

Lying down on the Helix Midnight, the memory foam layer feels soft and produces some top quality body shaping, while the other materials in the Midnight work to counteract this and make an overall firmer composition. The individually-wrapped coils and the firmer support foams also help with re-positioning.

For back sleepers, there is enough good comfort material in the mattress to conform to your lower spine while supporting your upper spine in a neutral position. For heavier buyers or those who prefer a firmer mattress, there are two more choices for you in the Helix Twilight and Helix Dawn variants.

Majority of side sleepers should feel perfectly comfy on the Midnight, but, if you are wanting less pressure while still sticking with a flexible medium firmness, you might want to take a look at the Helix Dusk, which uses a body-conforming latex-alternative foam that’s breathable and provides the surface a little bit of bounce.

Side sleepers typically need to be more mindful of pressure since they sleep with most of their weight on a tinier area. Those who are smaller than average or those looking for a lot of pressure relief might want to stick to the plusher models.

Stomach sleepers should feel supported in the Midnight, particularly if this isn’t their main position or they tend to switch things up a lot. Firmer mattresses might be preferable for exclusive tummy sleepers so that they can make sure their hips do not dip and over-arch their back.

Finally, Helix Sleep suggests Helix for sleepers around 350 lbs or couples that weigh a maximum of 250 pounds each. If you or your spouse are substantially bigger than average, the company has also produced a mattress called the Nightfall that is constructed to accommodate a total weight of 1000 lbs.

Couples with differing body types or tastes may also pick a dual comfort variant that pairs Firm with Plush.

Bear in mind that if neither of those options feel right, you may always check out the 4 other beds in the newest collection: the Sunset (plush, softer compared to the Moonlight), Dusk (moderate feel, slightly firmer compared to the Midnight), Twilight (firm, designed for side sleepers), or Dawn (the firmest option in the collection).

Motion Transfer

Now, let us talk about motion transfer, or the amount of activity that’s noticeable from one side of the bed to the other. While this will be important for many buyers, those who sleep with a partner may find it especially interesting as it will show just how bothered you may be by your partner’s nighttime movements. Helix Mattress Free Topper

According to my research, Helix surpasses expectations for hybrids in this space due to the quantity and quality of foam it incorporates, in addition to the pocketed coils which help trap motion at its source. If you’re a light sleeper concerned that motion from the other side of the mattress will bother you, then you should not have much concern with this mattress. I’d say that all of the Helix mattresses would be a good choice for couples.

Sinkage

While buying a brand-new mattress, most people would like to know whether they’ll feel as though they are sinking “into” the it or lying “on top” of it.

While you are likely to encounter some immediate sinkage in the uppermost foam layers, when you sink through those layers, you will hit the individually-wrapped coils and feel great support. This combo will appeal to a wide assortment of sleepers, but will satisfy back and stomach sleepers the most.

Edge Support

While I do feel the memory foam collapse as I sit close to the edge of the Helix Midnight, the individually-wrapped coils stop the mattress from collapsing too much beyond that. I feel very secure seated on the bed.

In my opinion, Helix mattresses are well above average when it comes to edge support compared to other bed-in-a-box brands, and this is because of their freshly updated edges containing reinforcement in the coil system. There may be some compression in the comfort foams when you sit with your entire weight on the side, but lying on the side will feel comfy and safe. Couples who need more space to stretch out typically appreciate strong edges.

Lying down, I feel like I can get near the edge of the bed without feeling like I’ll fall over or be pushed off the mattress. Overall, I believe the Helix mattress has nice edge support.

100 Night Sleep Trial

Among the best features of buying a mattress-in-a-box online is the sleep trials they usually include. Helix Mattress is not any different. You customize the mattress that is made for you, place your order, and in two weeks, it is sent to your door. From the moment you click to buy the mattress, you’ve got 100 nights to check it out (minus the time for delivery, so it’s more like 90 nights). If it isn’t what you wanted, you can return it free of charge, and get a complete refund.

If you do return the mattress, it isn’t resold or restocked. In fact, Helix Sleep does its best to locate a local place to donate it. When there is no way the company can find a way to donate your returned mattress, it is recycled instead. Helix Mattress Free Topper

Helix Warranty

The Helix Mattress includes an awesome 10-year warranty that covers defects, but it comes with some limitations, exceptions, plus the burden of proof is on the customer (like most warranties). Of course, you should be the original owner of the mattress to make use of the guarantee, and you need to be sure that you save your receipt as proof of purchase.

Provided that you follow all Helix’s expectations for use, your warranty should be valid. That means you will need to use a proper foundation (no adjustable bed frames or slats more than 4 inches apart) and you don’t use the mattress improperly – no jumping on the bed!

If your Helix begins to show an indentation of 1 inch or more, which is what typically happens when low-density foams break down, then you could qualify for a replacement or repair of your mattress.

What’s The Best Way To Care For Your Helix?

Helix mattresses require no turning, but it’s suggested that you rotate the mattress possibly once or twice a year to prevent it from wearing down from excess sagging.

For routine cleanup, it’s suggested to use cool water with gentle dish soap to clean any dirt or stains. Be certain to wash using soft circular movements, rather than rubbing.
