Helix Sleep markets hybrid mattresses manufactured using dual-layer covers, polyfoam comfort systems, and pocketed coil support cores reinforced using polyfoam base layers. Helix Mattress Comparison

Helix Sleep gives you full mattress customization. Purchasers are asked to fill out a questionnaire that discusses their weight, height, firmness preferences, sleep position, and other elements. Then based on these answers, Helix Sleep will suggest one of the following 6 mattress models; each respective variant provides a one-of-a-kind combination of firmness and support:

  • Helix Sunset: ‘Soft’ firmness, targeted cushioning, and balanced support
  • Helix Moonlight: ‘Soft’ firmness, moderate cushioning, and additional support
  • Helix Midnight: ‘Medium’ firmness, targeted cushioning, and balanced support
  • Helix Dusk: ‘Medium’ firmness, moderate cushioning, and extra support
  • Helix Twilight: ‘Firm’ firmness, targeted cushioning, and balanced support
  • Helix Dawn: ‘Firm’ firmness, moderate cushioning, and extra support

Helix Sleep hybrids that have targeted cushioning conform closely, making them optimal for those who sleep on their side. While those with moderate cushioning do not conform as much and are great for all sleep positions. Lighter people may feel more comfy on models with balanced support, while individuals that weigh 130 lbs or more tend to favor the variants with additional support.

Helix Sleep also markets two variants with dual-firmness, the Helix Dual Balanced (with balanced support and targeted cushioning) and the Helix Dual Extra (with extra support and moderate cushioning). Both of these mattresses have one ‘Firm’ side and one ‘Soft’ side, making them ideal for couples with differing preferences. Lastly, the Helix Nightfall is a hybrid designed for bigger, heavier people. This variant has an additional layer of memory foam for optimum support.

My review of Helix Sleep mattresses discovered that the customizable selection accommodates sleepers with a wide assortment of firmness preferences and body types. The mattresses also have strong edge support, isolate motion transfer nicely, and produce less noise than the average hybrid. Helix Mattress Comparison

Construction Helix Mattress Comparison

All 9 of the various iterations of the mattress will differ slightly in construction, but for 6 of the 9 models, the construction should be quite similar. The 6 core variants (listed above) are 10 inches tall, composed of 6 inches of individually wrapped coils and 4 inches of foam.

Helix mattresses differ in firmness and density depending upon the foams used in order to get more/less support and more/less firmness. The four unique foams used within Helix mattresses are high-grade polyurethane foam, memory foam, Helix Dynamic Foam, and a DuraDense Foam (aka support foam). Not all of the models have all of the foams – some just have 3 of the 4 – but it really shouldn’t matter much for the buyer. The foams are just levers that Helix Sleep can pull in order to offer 9 different versions (and supposedly have a model for everybody). Helix Mattress Comparison

Below, I briefly talk about the construction (materials and quality) of the typical Helix mattress, the Helix Midnight.

Cover – Initially, all Helix mattresses have the same cover, made of 100 percent polyester. I thought it to be stretchy and thin, allowing for some great breathability. But, if you prefer something more amped up, you can elect to swap out the regular cover for the UltraCool one, which is made up of a phase-change fabric to regulate temperature.

Comfort Layer – Up top, you’ll encounter a heavy layer of memory foam. This type of foam has a slow reaction to pressure, which means you are probably going to encounter some satisfying body contouring. Even though it may seem odd for a purportedly medium firmness bed to make use of a memory foam layer, it is important to remember that the feeling of deep sinkage doesn’t necessarily translate to softness; in fact, most of the time it produces quite a firm feeling.

Transition Layer – After sinking through the comfort layer, you’ll uncover a transition layer of poly foam. This layer of foam works to suppress the sinkage of the comfort layer and establish a supportive, medium firm feeling as you reach the individually wrapped coils below.

Support Layer – Most of the mattress is made up of this segment of individually wrapped coils. This system gives a supportive lift to the structure, working to put the sleeper “on top” of the bed, instead of “in it”. Because the coils are individually wrapped, they’re also likely to give additional breathability as air flows through the spaces in the coils.

Base Layer – Last but not least, you’ll find a thin segment of high-density poly foam. This section doesn’t affect the feel of the mattress too much, functioning mostly to give the pocketed coils something off of which to respond.

Firmness and Support

After having a peek at the construction of the Helix mattresses, let us chat about their different feels and firmness levels.

helix-mattress-firmness-and-support-scale

The firmness of the Helix is going to vary widely depending on the model you pick out. The Helix Midnight and Dusk, have medium firmness levels, which is going to be very versatile and thus exceptionally popular. If you are more particular, however, Helix Sleep is happy to oblige you with additional choices.

Lying down on the Midnight, the uppermost foam layer is soft and generates some quality body contouring, while the other materials in the Midnight work to counteract this and make an overall firmer structure. The firmer support foams and pocketed coils also help with re-positioning.

For back sleepers, there’s just enough good comfort material here to conform to your lower spine while supporting your upper spine in a neutral position. For larger sleepers or people who want a firmer mattress, there are two more models for you in the Helix Dawn and Helix Twilight variants.

Many side sleepers should feel perfectly comfortable on the Midnight, but, if you are needing a bit less pressure while still sticking with a versatile medium firmness, you might decide to check out the Helix Dusk, which utilizes a body-conforming latex-alternative foam that is breathable and provides the surface a small bit of bounce.

Side sleepers typically need to be mindful of pressure since they sleep with most their weight on a tinier area. Those who are smaller than average or people looking for a lot of pressure relief might want to stay with the plusher models.

Those who sleep on their stomach will feel supported in the Midnight, particularly if this is not their main position or they have a tendency to change things up a lot. Firmer mattresses might be preferable for exclusive tummy sleepers so they can ensure their hips do not dip and over-arch their back.

Finally, Helix Sleep recommends Helix mattresses for sleepers around 350 lbs or couples who weigh a maximum of 250 lbs each. If you or your spouse are substantially bigger than average, Helix has also produced a mattress called the Nightfall that’s built to accommodate a combined weight of 1000 pounds.

Couples with different types of bodies or tastes can also select a dual comfort model that pairs Firm with Plush.

Bear in mind that if neither of those options feel right, you can always check out the 4 other models in the new collection: the Sunset (plush, softer compared to the Moonlight), Dusk (moderate feel, slightly firmer compared to the Midnight), Twilight (firm, made for side sleepers), or Dawn (the firmest mattress in the collection).

Motion Transfer

Now, let us talk about motion transfer, or the amount of activity that’s noticeable from one side of the bed to the other. While this is going to be significant for many sleepers, those who sleep with a spouse may find it especially intriguing as it’ll illuminate just how bothered you may be by your bed mate’s nighttime movements. Helix Mattress Comparison

Based on my observation, Helix exceeds expectations for hybrid mattresses in this space due to the quantity and quality of foam it contains, in addition to the pocketed coils which help keep motion at its source. If you are a light sleeper concerned that motion from the opposite side of the mattress will wake you, then you shouldn’t have much concern with this hybrid. I’d say that any of the Helix mattresses are a good option for couples.

Sinkage

When getting a brand-new mattress, most people want to know whether they’ll feel as though they’re sinking “into” the mattress or lying “on top” of it.

Even though you may encounter a little immediate sinkage from the soft foam on top, when you sink through these layers, you’ll find the pocketed coils and find great support. This combination will appeal to a vast range of sleepers, but will satisfy back and stomach sleepers the most.

Edge Support

While I do feel the memory foam collapse as I sit close to the edge of the Helix Midnight, the individually-wrapped coils stop the mattress from compressing too much beyond that. I feel quite secured seated on the bed.

In my opinion, Helix mattresses perform above average for edge support in comparison to other bed-in-a-box brands, and this is due to their newly updated edges that contain reinforcement in the coil unit. There can be some compression in the comfort foams when you sit with your entire weight on the side, but laying on the side will feel comfortable and safe. Couples who need more space to stretch out typically appreciate strong edges.

Laying down, I also feel like I could get close to the edge of the bed without feeling like I will fall over or be ejected from the bed. Overall, I think the Helix mattress has great edge support.

100 Night Sleep Trial

Among the best features of purchasing a mattress-in-a-box online is the sleep trials they typically include. Helix Sleep is not any different. You create the mattress that’s made for you, place your order, and within 2 weeks, it is sent to your door. From the moment you click to order the mattress, you have 100 nights to test it out (minus the time for delivery, so it is more like 90 nights). If it isn’t what you wanted, you can return it for free, and receive a complete refund.

If you do return the mattress, it isn’t resold or restocked. Actually, the company locates a local place to donate it. When there is no way Helix Sleep can find a way to donate your refunded mattress, they have it recycled instead. Helix Mattress Comparison

Helix Warranty

The Helix Mattress includes a generous 10-year guarantee that covers defects, but it comes with limitations, exceptions, plus the burden of proof is on the customer (like most guarantees ). Of course, you must be the first owner of the Helix to use the warranty, and you will need to be sure you keep your receipt as proof of purchase.

Provided that you follow all the manufacturer’s expectations for use, your warranty should be valid. That means you need to use a proper foundation (no adjustable bed frames or slats more than 4″ apart) and that you don’t use the mattress improperly – no jumping on the bed!

If your mattress starts to show an indentation of 1″ or more, something that typically happens when low-density foams break down, you could qualify for a repair or replacement of your Helix.

What’s The Best Way To Care For Your Helix?

Helix mattresses require no turning, but it is recommended that you rotate the mattress possibly once or twice a year to keep it from wearing down from excess sagging.

For regular cleaning, it’s advised to use cold water with gentle dish detergent to clean any stains or dirt. Be certain to clean using soft circular motions, instead of rubbing.
