Helix Sleep markets hybrid mattresses manufactured using polyfoam comfort systems, dual-layer covers, and pocketed coil support cores reinforced using polyfoam base layers. Helix Mattress Coils

Helix Sleep offers complete mattress customization. Buyers are urged to fill out a survey that discusses their height, weight, sleep position, firmness preferences, and other elements. Then based on these answers, Helix Sleep will suggest one of the following 6 mattress models; each respective model provides a unique combination of firmness and support:

  • Helix Sunset: ‘Soft’ firmness, targeted cushioning, and balanced support
  • Helix Moonlight: ‘Soft’ firmness, moderate cushioning, and extra support
  • Helix Midnight: ‘Medium’ firmness, targeted cushioning, and balanced support
  • Helix Dusk: ‘Medium’ firmness, moderate cushioning, and extra support
  • Helix Twilight: ‘Firm’ firmness, targeted cushioning, and balanced support
  • Helix Dawn: ‘Firm’ firmness, moderate cushioning, and additional support

Helix Mattress Coils

Helix Sleep mattresses that have targeted cushioning conform closely, making them optimal for side sleepers. While mattresses with moderate cushioning do not conform as much and are great for pretty much all sleep positions. Lighter men and women may feel more comfortable on models with balanced support, while people that weigh 130 pounds or more often prefer the variants with extra support.

Helix Sleep also offers 2 variants with dual-firmness, the Helix Dual Balanced (with targeted cushioning and balanced support) and the Helix Dual Extra (with moderate cushioning and additional support). Both of these mattresses have one ‘Soft’ side and one ‘Firm’ side, making them great for couples with differing preferences. Lastly, the Helix Nightfall is a hybrid developed for bigger, heavier people. This model has an extra layer of memory foam for optimum support.

My review of Helix Sleep mattresses found that the customizable aspect accommodates sleepers with a large variety of body types and firmness preferences. The mattresses also offer strong edge support, isolate motion transfer well, and produce less noise than the average hybrid. Helix Mattress Coils

Construction Helix Mattress Coils

All 9 of the various iterations of the mattress will differ slightly in construction, but for 6 of the 9 variants, the construction should be quite similar. The six core variants (listed above) are 10 inches tall, made up of 6 inches of individually wrapped coils and 4 inches of foam.

Helix mattresses differ in firmness and density depending upon the foams used in order to achieve more/less firmness and more/less support. The four unique foams used within Helix mattresses are memory foam, high-grade polyurethane foam, Helix Dynamic Foam, and a DuraDense Foam (aka support foam). Not all the mattresses have all the foams – some only have three of the four – but it really won’t matter much for the buyer. The foams are merely levers that Helix Sleep can pull in order to offer 9 different mattresses (and supposedly have a mattress for everybody). Helix Mattress Coils

Underneath, I concisely discuss the construction (materials and quality) of your average Helix mattress, the Helix Midnight.

Cover – Initially, all Helix mattresses come with exactly the same cover, made of 100% polyester. I found it to be thin and pliable, allowing for some great breathability. But, if you prefer something more luxurious, you can opt to swap out the regular cover for the UltraCool one, which is composed of a phase change fabric for heat regulation.

Comfort Layer – Up top, you’ll encounter a thick layer of memory foam. This type of foam has a slow response to pressure, which means you’re likely to experience some great body shaping. Even though it may seem odd for a supposedly medium firm mattress to make use of a memory foam layer, it’s crucial to remember that the existence of deep sinkage doesn’t necessarily translate to softness; in actuality, oftentimes it produces quite a firm feel.

Transition Layer – After sinking through the comfort layer, you’ll uncover a transition layer of poly foam. This layer of foam works to suppress the sinkage of the comfort layer and establish a supportive, medium firm feel as you reach the individually wrapped coils underneath.

Support Layer – The majority of the mattress is made up of this section of individually wrapped coils. This system gives a supportive lift to the construction, working to put the sleeper “on top” of the bed, as opposed to “in it”. Because these coils are wrapped individually, they’re also likely to encourage extra breathability as air flows through the spaces in the coils.

Base Layer – Lastly, you’ll discover a thin section of high-density poly foam. This segment does not affect the feel of the mattress too much, functioning mostly to provide the individually wrapped coils something off of which to react.

Firmness and Support

After taking a peek at the construction of the Helix mattresses, let’s talk about their varying firmness levels and feels.

helix-mattress-firmness-and-support-scale

The firmness of the Helix is going to vary widely depending on which model you pick out. The Helix Dusk and Midnight, have moderate firmness levels, which is going to be very versatile and therefore best-selling. If you have more specific needs, however, Helix Sleep will be happy to oblige you with more choices.

Laying down on the Helix Midnight, the memory foam layer feels soft and produces some quality body contouring, while the rest of the materials in the Midnight work to counteract this and create an overall firmer structure. The firmer support foams and pocketed coils also help with re-positioning.

For back sleepers, there is just enough good comfort material here to conform to your lumbar while supporting your whole back in a neutral position. For larger sleepers or people who prefer a firmer bed, there are two more models for you in the Helix Dawn and Helix Twilight models.

Majority of side sleepers should feel totally comfy on the Midnight, however, if you are needing a bit less pressure while still going with a versatile medium firmness, you might decide to take a look at the Helix Dusk, which utilizes a body-conforming latex-alternative foam that’s breathable and provides the surface a little bit of bounce.

Side sleepers typically have to be mindful of pressure because they sleep with all their weight on a tinier region. People who are smaller than average or people in the market for a lot of pressure relief might want to stay with the plusher variants.

Those who sleep on their stomach should feel comfortable in the Midnight, especially if this is not their main position or they tend to change things up a lot. Firmer choices might be preferable for exclusive stomach sleepers so that they can ensure their hips don’t dip and over-arch their spine.

Last, the manufacturer recommends Helix for sleepers up to 350 lbs or couples who weigh up to 250 pounds each. If you or your spouse are substantially larger than average, the company has also produced a bed called the Nightfall that’s constructed to accommodate a combined weight of 1000 lbs.

Partners with differing body types or tastes can also select a dual comfort option that combines Firm with Plush.

Bear in mind that if neither of those models seem right, you may always have a look at the 4 other beds in the newest collection: the Sunset (plush, softer compared to the Moonlight), Dusk (medium feel, a little firmer than the Midnight), Twilight (firm, designed for side sleepers), or Dawn (the firmest mattress in the line).

Motion Transfer

Next up, let’s talk about motion transfer, or the amount of disturbance that’s noticeable from 1 side of the bed to the other. While this is going to be important for all people, those who doze with a spouse may find it particularly intriguing as it’ll illuminate just how bothered you’ll be by your bed mate’s nighttime movements. Helix Mattress Coils

Based on my observation, Helix exceeds expectations for hybrid mattresses in this space because of the amount and quality of foam it incorporates, as well as the individually wrapped coils that help trap motion at its source. If you’re a light sleeper afraid that motion from the opposite side of the bed will bother you, then you should not have a lot of concern with this mattress. I would say that any of the Helix mattresses are a good choice for couples.

Sinkage

While buying a new mattress, the majority of people want to know whether they will feel as though they are sinking “into” the mattress or laying “on top” of it.

Even though you are likely to experience some immediate sinkage from the soft foam at the top, by the time you sink through those layers, you are going to find the individually-wrapped coils and find amazing support. This combo will interest a wide assortment of individuals, but will satisfy back and stomach sleepers in particular.

Edge Support

Though I do feel the memory foam collapse as I sit close to the edge of the Helix Midnight, the coils prevent the mattress from compressing too much beyond that. I feel quite secured seated on the bed.

In my view, Helix mattresses are well above average when it comes to edge support in comparison to other bed-in-a-box brands, and this is because of their recently updated edges that contain reinforcement in the coil unit. There may be some compression at the comfort foams when you sit with your entire weight on the side, but laying on the side should feel comfortable and safe. Partners who need more space to stretch out normally love strong edges.

Lying down, I also feel like I could get close to the edge of the mattress without feeling like I’ll fall off or be pushed off the mattress. Overall, I believe that the Helix mattress has nice edge support.

100 Night Sleep Trial

One of the best features of buying a mattress-in-a-box online is the sleep trials they typically include. Helix is no different. You customize the mattress that’s meant for you, place your order, and within 2 weeks, it is sent to your door. From the minute you click to buy the mattress, you have 100 nights to check it out (minus the time for delivery, so it’s more like 90 nights). If it is not what you wanted, you can return it free of charge, and receive a full refund.

Should you return the mattress, it isn’t restocked or resold. In fact, Helix Sleep finds a local place to donate it. When there’s no way Helix can find a way to donate your refunded mattress, it’s recycled instead. Helix Mattress Coils

Helix Warranty

The Helix Mattress includes an amazing 10-year warranty that covers defects, but it comes with a few limitations, exceptions, and the burden of proof is on the customer (like most warranties). Of course, you should be the original owner of the Helix to use the guarantee, and you need to be sure that you keep your receipt as proof of purchase.

As long as you follow all of the manufacturer’s expectations for use, your warranty is valid. That means you will need to use a proper base (no adjustable bed frames or slats more than 4″ apart) and that you don’t use the Helix improperly – no jumping on it!

If your mattress begins to have an indentation of 1″ or more, which is what generally happens when low-density foams break down, then you could be eligible for a replacement or repair of your mattress.

What’s The Best Way To Care For Your Helix?

Helix mattresses require no turning, but it’s recommended that you rotate the mattress perhaps once or twice a year to prevent it from wearing down from excess sagging.

For regular cleaning, it is advised to use cool water with gentle dish detergent to clean any stains or dirt. Be sure that you clean using soft circular movements, rather than rubbing.
