Helix Sleep offers hybrid mattresses made with polyfoam comfort systems, dual-layer covers, and pocketed coil support cores reinforced with polyfoam base layers. Helix Mattress Base

Helix Sleep gives you full mattress customization. Buyers are asked to complete a questionnaire that discusses their weight, height, sleep position, firmness preferences, and other elements. Based on these answers, Helix Sleep will suggest one of the following 6 mattress options; each respective option offers a unique combination of firmness and support:

  • Helix Sunset: ‘Soft’ firmness, targeted cushioning, and balanced support
  • Helix Moonlight: ‘Soft’ firmness, moderate cushioning, and additional support
  • Helix Midnight: ‘Medium’ firmness, targeted cushioning, and balanced support
  • Helix Dusk: ‘Medium’ firmness, moderate cushioning, and additional support
  • Helix Twilight: ‘Firm’ firmness, targeted cushioning, and balanced support
  • Helix Dawn: ‘Firm’ firmness, moderate cushioning, and additional support

Helix Sleep mattresses that have targeted cushioning conform closely, making them perfect for those who sleep on their side. While hybrids with moderate cushioning don’t conform as much and are suitable for all sleep positions. Lighter people may feel most comfy on variants with balanced support, while those that weigh 130 lbs or more often prefer the models with extra support.

Helix Sleep also offers 2 mattresses with dual-firmness, the Helix Dual Balanced (with targeted cushioning and balanced support) and the Helix Dual Extra (with moderate cushioning and additional support). Both these models have one ‘Firm’ side and one ‘Soft’ side, which makes them great for couples with different tastes. Lastly, the Helix Nightfall is a hybrid designed for larger, heavier people. This variant has an extra layer of memory foam for optimum support.

My review of Helix Sleep mattresses discovered that the customizable aspect accommodates sleepers with a large variety of body types and firmness preferences. The mattresses also have strong edge support, isolate motion transfer well, and produce less noise than the average hybrid. Helix Mattress Base

Construction Helix Mattress Base

All nine of the various iterations of the mattress will differ slightly in construction, but for 6 of the 9 models, the construction should be rather similar. The 6 core models (listed above) are 10 inches tall, made up of 6 inches of individually wrapped coils and 4 inches of foam.

Helix mattresses vary in firmness and density based on the foams used in order to achieve more/less support and more/less firmness. The four unique foams utilized within Helix mattresses are memory foam, high-grade polyurethane foam, Helix Dynamic Foam, and a DuraDense Foam (aka support foam). Not all the variants have all the foams – some just have 3 of the 4 – but it really won’t matter much for the buyer. The foams are merely levers that Helix Sleep can pull to be able to offer 9 unique mattresses (and hopefully have a mattress for everyone). Helix Mattress Base

Underneath, I quickly talk about the construction (materials and quality) of your average Helix mattress, the Helix Midnight.

Cover – Initially, all Helix mattresses come with the same cover, made of 100% polyester. I found it to be pliable and thin, allowing for some nice breathability. But, if you would like something more lavish, you can elect to swap out the standard cover for the brand’s UltraCool one, which is made up of a phase-change fabric to regulate temperature.

Comfort Layer – Up top, you will encounter a heavy layer of memory foam. This type of foam has a slow response to pressure, meaning you’re probably going to experience some gratifying body contouring. Even though it may seem odd for a supposedly medium firm bed to incorporate a memory foam comfort layer, it is crucial to remember that the feeling of deep sinkage does not necessarily translate to softness; in fact, most of the time it gives quite a firm feeling.

Transition Layer – After getting past the comfort layer, you’ll uncover a transition layer of poly foam. This layer works to curb the sinkage of the memory foam and create a supportive, medium firm feeling as you reach the individually wrapped coils underneath.

Support Layer – Most of the mattress consists of this segment of pocketed coils. This system gives a supportive lift to the structure, working to put the sleeper “on top” of the bed, as opposed to “in it”. Since these coils are individually wrapped, they are also going to allow additional breathability as air flows in between the spaces in the coils.

Base Layer – Last but not least, you’ll find a thin section of high-density poly foam. This section doesn’t really affect the feel of the mattress too much, working mostly to give the pocketed coils something off of which to react.

Firmness and Support

After taking a peek at the construction of the Helix mattresses, let’s chat about their varying feels and firmness levels.

helix-mattress-firmness-and-support-scale

The firmness level of the Helix will vary widely depending on which variant you choose. The Helix Dusk and Midnight, have moderate firmness levels, which is going to be quite versatile and therefore exceptionally popular. If you are more particular, however, Helix Sleep will be happy to provide you with more options.

Laying down on the Helix Midnight, the memory foam layer feels soft and produces some high quality body shaping, while the rest of the materials in the mattress work to counteract this and make an overall firmer structure. The individually-wrapped coils and the firmer support foams also assist with re-positioning.

For those who sleep on their back, there’s just enough good comfort material in the mattress to conform to your lower spine while supporting your whole upper spine in a neutral position. For heavier buyers or those who want a firmer mattress, there are two more choices for you in the Helix Dawn and Helix Twilight variants.

Many side sleepers should feel totally comfy on the Midnight, but, if you’re wanting less pressure while still going with a versatile medium firmness, you might decide to take a look at the Helix Dusk, which utilizes a body-conforming latex-alternative foam that is breathable and gives the surface a little bit of bounce.

Side sleepers typically need to be mindful of pressure since they sleep with most of their weight on a smaller region. People who are smaller than average or those in the market for lots of pressure relief might want to stay with the plusher models.

Those who sleep on their stomach will feel supported in the Midnight, particularly if this isn’t their primary position or they have a tendency to switch things up a lot. Firmer choices may be preferable for exclusive tummy sleepers so they can make sure their hips don’t dip and over-arch their spine.

Last, the manufacturer suggests Helix for sleepers up to 350 lbs or couples that weigh a maximum of 250 lbs each. In the event you or your spouse are substantially larger than average, the company has also created a mattress called the Nightfall that is made to accommodate a combined weight of 1000 pounds.

Couples with different types of bodies or tastes can also pick a dual comfort variant that combines Firm with Plush.

Keep in mind that if none of these models seem quite right, you can always have a look at the 4 other beds in the new collection: the Sunset (plush, softer compared to the Moonlight), Dusk (medium feel, a little firmer compared to the Midnight), Twilight (firm, designed for side sleepers), or Dawn (the firmest variant in the collection).

Motion Transfer

Next up, let’s talk about motion transfer, or the amount of activity that’s detectable from 1 side of the mattress to the other. While this will be crucial for many people, those who sleep with a spouse may find it especially interesting as it will illuminate just how bothered you’ll be by your partner’s nighttime movements. Helix Mattress Base

According to my research, Helix Sleep exceeds expectations for hybrids in this space due to the amount and quality of foam it incorporates, in addition to the individually wrapped coils that help keep motion at its source. If you’re a light sleeper afraid that movement from the other side of the mattress will bother you, you shouldn’t have much concern with this hybrid. I would say that any of the Helix mattresses would be a good option for couples.

Sinkage

While getting a brand-new mattress, the majority of people want to know whether they’ll feel like they are sinking “into” the mattress or lying “on top” of it.

Even though you may experience a little immediate sinkage from the uppermost foam layers, when you sink through those layers, you’ll hit the pocketed coils and feel amazing support. This combination will interest a vast assortment of individuals, but will satisfy back and stomach sleepers in particular.

Edge Support

Though I do feel the memory foam compress as I sit close to the edge of the bed, the coils prevent the mattress from collapsing too much beyond that. I feel quite secured sitting on the mattress.

In my view, Helix mattresses are well above average for edge support in comparison to other bed-in-a-box brands, which is because of their recently updated edges that contain reinforcement in the coil system. There may be a little compression at the comfort foams when you sit with your entire weight on the side, but laying on the side should feel comfortable and safe. Partners who want more space to stretch out normally love stronger edges.

Laying down, I also feel like I can get close to the edge of the bed without feeling like I will fall over or be ejected from the mattress. Overall, I think the Helix has nice edge support.

100 Night Sleep Trial

Among the best features of buying a bed-in-a-box online is the sleep trials they typically include. Helix is no different. You create the mattress that is intended for you, place your order, and within 2 weeks, it is sent to your home. From the moment you click to order the mattress, you have 100 nights to check it out (minus the time for delivery, so it’s more like 90 nights). If it is not perfect, you can return it free of charge, and receive a complete refund.

Should you return the mattress, it is not resold or restocked. Actually, Helix does its best to locate a local place to donate it. When there is no way Helix Sleep can find a way to donate your returned mattress, it is recycled instead. Helix Mattress Base

Helix Warranty

Helix Sleep offers a generous 10-year warranty that covers flaws, but it has limitations, exceptions, plus the burden of proof is on the consumer (like most warranties). Of course, you must be the original owner of the mattress to use the warranty, and you will need to be sure that you keep your receipt as proof of purchase.

As long as you follow all Helix’s expectations for use, your warranty should be valid. That means you need to have a suitable base (no adjustable bed frames or slats more than 4 inches apart) and you don’t use the Helix improperly – no jumping on it!

If your mattress starts to show an indentation of 1″ or longer, something that typically happens when low-density foams break down, then you could be eligible for a repair or replacement of your mattress.

What’s The Best Way To Care For Your Helix?

Helix mattresses need no turning, but it’s recommended that you rotate the mattress perhaps a couple of times a year to keep it from wearing down from excess sagging.

For regular cleaning, it is suggested to use cold water with gentle dish soap to clean any dirt or stains. Make sure to clean using soft circular movements, instead of rubbing.
