Helix Sleep markets hybrid mattresses manufactured using polyfoam comfort systems, dual-layer covers, and pocketed coil support cores fortified using polyfoam base layers. Helix Independent Review

Helix Sleep allows complete mattress customization. Purchasers are asked to complete a questionnaire that discusses their weight, height, firmness preferences, sleep position, and other elements. Based on these results, Helix Sleep will recommend one of the following six mattress models; each individual model offers a unique combination of firmness and support:

  • Helix Sunset: ‘Soft’ firmness, targeted cushioning, and balanced support
  • Helix Moonlight: ‘Soft’ firmness, moderate cushioning, and extra support
  • Helix Midnight: ‘Medium’ firmness, targeted cushioning, and balanced support
  • Helix Dusk: ‘Medium’ firmness, moderate cushioning, and extra support
  • Helix Twilight: ‘Firm’ firmness, targeted cushioning, and balanced support
  • Helix Dawn: ‘Firm’ firmness, moderate cushioning, and additional support

Helix Independent Review

Helix Sleep mattresses with targeted cushioning conform closely, which makes them optimal for those who sleep on their side. While those that have moderate cushioning do not conform as much and are ideal for all sleep positions. Lighter men and women may feel more comfy on variants with balanced support, while those who weigh 130 pounds or more tend to favor the variants with additional support.

Helix Sleep also markets 2 mattresses with dual-firmness, the Helix Dual Balanced (with balanced support and targeted cushioning) and the Helix Dual Extra (with additional support and moderate cushioning). Both of these variants have one ‘Firm’ side and one ‘Soft’ side, making them great for couples with differing preferences. Last, the Helix Nightfall is a hybrid developed for bigger, heavier people. This mattress has an additional layer of memory foam for maximum support.

My review of Helix Sleep mattresses found that the customizable selection accommodates sleepers with a large range of firmness preferences and body types. The mattresses also provide strong edge support, isolate motion transfer nicely, and create less noise than the average hybrid. Helix Independent Review

Construction Helix Independent Review

All 9 of the various iterations of this mattress will differ slightly in construction, but for 6 of the 9 models, the construction will be fairly similar. The six core variants (listed above) are 10 inches tall, made up of 6 inches of individually wrapped coils and 4 inches of foam.

Helix mattresses differ in firmness and density based upon the foams utilized in order to achieve more/less support and more/less firmness. The 4 unique foams utilized within Helix mattresses are high-grade polyurethane foam, memory foam, Helix Dynamic Foam, and a DuraDense Foam (aka support foam). Not all of the beds have all of the foams – some just have 3 of the 4 – but it really shouldn’t matter much for the consumer. The foams are merely levers that Helix Sleep can pull in order to offer 9 different variants (and hopefully have a mattress for everybody). Helix Independent Review

Below, I briefly talk about the construction (materials and quality) of the typical Helix mattress, the Helix Midnight.

helix-midnight-construction

Cover – Originally, all Helix mattresses come with exactly the same cover, made of 100 percent polyester. I thought it to be pliable and thin, allowing for some great breathability. However, if you prefer something more amped up, you can elect to swap out the standard cover for the UltraCool one, which is made up of a phase-change fabric to regulate heat.

Comfort Layer – On top, you’ll discover a thick layer of memory foam. This type of foam has a slow response to pressure, which means you are probably going to encounter some satisfying body contouring. While it might seem strange for a purportedly medium firmness bed to feature a memory foam comfort layer, it’s crucial to remember that the feeling of deep sinkage doesn’t always translate to softness; in actuality, most of the time it generates quite a firm feel.

Transition Layer – After sinking through the comfort layer, you’ll discover a transition layer of poly foam. This layer of foam works to curb the sinkage of the comfort layer and set a supportive, medium firm feel as you reach the pocketed coils underneath.

Support Layer – Most of the mattress consists of this segment of individually wrapped coils. This system brings a supportive lift into the construction, working to place the sleeper “on top” of the mattress, as opposed to “in it”. Since the coils are individually wrapped, they are also likely to allow additional breathability as air flows through the spaces in the coils.

Base Layer – Last, you’ll find a thin section of high-density poly foam. This section does not affect the feel of the bed too much, working mostly to give the individually wrapped coils something off of which to react.

Firmness and Support

After taking a peek at the construction of the Helix mattresses, let us discuss their different feels and firmness levels.

helix-mattress-firmness-and-support-scale

The firmness of the Helix is going to differ widely depending on which model you pick out. The Helix Dusk and Midnight, have moderate firmness levels, which tends to be quite versatile and thus best-selling. If you have more specific needs, however, Helix Sleep is happy to oblige you with additional options.

Lying down on the Midnight, the memory foam comfort layer feels soft and produces some high quality body shaping, while the rest of the materials within the Midnight work to control this and create an overall firmer structure. The pocketed coils and the firmer support foams also assist with re-positioning.

For back sleepers, there’s enough good comfort material here to conform to your lumbar while supporting your whole back in a neutral position. For heavier buyers or people who prefer a firmer mattress, there are 2 more options for you in the Helix Dawn and Helix Twilight models.

Majority of side sleepers will feel totally comfortable on the Midnight, however, if you’re needing less pressure while still sticking with a flexible medium firmness, you might want to take a look at the Helix Dusk, which uses a body-conforming latex-alternative foam that is breathable and provides the surface a small bit of bounce.

Those who sleep on their side typically have to be more mindful of pressure because they sleep with all of their weight on a smaller area. Those who are lighter than average or those looking for a lot of pressure relief may want to stick to the plusher models.

Those who sleep on their stomach will feel supported in the Midnight, especially if this isn’t their main position or they have a tendency to switch things up a lot. Firmer mattresses may be preferable for exclusive stomach sleepers so they can ensure their hips don’t dip and over-arch their spine.

Lastly, the manufacturer recommends Helix mattresses for sleepers up to 350 lbs or couples who weigh a maximum of 250 pounds each. If you or your partner are significantly larger than average, Helix has also created a bed called the Nightfall that’s built to accommodate a combined weight of 1000 lbs.

Partners with differing body types or preferences may also pick a dual comfort variant that pairs Firm with Plush.

Keep in mind that if neither of these models feel quite right, you may always have a look at the four other models in the newest collection: the Sunset (plush, softer compared to the Moonlight), Dusk (moderate feel, a little firmer compared to the Midnight), Twilight (firm, made for side sleepers), or Dawn (the firmest variant in the collection).

Motion Transfer

Next up, let us chat about motion transfer, or the amount of disturbance that’s noticeable from 1 side of the mattress to the other. While this is going to be important for all sleepers, those who sleep with a spouse may find it particularly intriguing as it will show just how bothered you’ll be by your partner’s nighttime movements. Helix Independent Review

According to my research, Helix Sleep exceeds expectations for hybrids in this space because of the amount and quality of foam it contains, as well as the pocketed coils which help keep motion at its source. If you’re a light sleeper afraid that motion from the opposite side of the bed will bother you, you shouldn’t have much concern with this hybrid. I would say that any of the Helix mattresses are a good option for couples.

Sinkage

While buying a brand-new mattress, the majority of people would like to know whether they’ll feel as though they’re sinking “into” the mattress or lying “on top” of it.

While you’re likely to experience a little immediate sinkage in the soft foam on top, when you sink through those layers, you’ll find the individually-wrapped coils and experience great support. This combination will appeal to a vast assortment of individuals, but will satisfy stomach and back sleepers the most.

Edge Support

Though I do feel the foam compress as I sit close to the edge of the mattress, the coils prevent the mattress from collapsing too much beyond that. I feel very secure seated on the mattress.

In my view, Helix mattresses are well above average when it comes to edge support in comparison to other bed-in-a-box brands, and this is due to their recently updated edges containing reinforcement in the coil unit. There can be a little compression at the comfort foams when you sit with all your weight on the side, but lying on the side will feel comfortable and secure. Partners who need more space to stretch out normally love strong edges.

Laying down, I feel like I can get near the edge of the mattress without feeling like I’ll fall off or be pushed off the mattress. Overall, I believe the Helix mattress has nice edge support.

100 Night Sleep Trial

Among the best features of purchasing a bed-in-a-box online is the sleep trials they usually come with. Helix Sleep is no different. You create the mattress that’s meant for you, place your order, and within a couple of weeks, it’s delivered to your door. From the minute you click to buy the mattress, you have 100 nights to check it out (minus the time for delivery, so it is more like 90 nights). If it is not ideal, you can return it for free of charge, and get a full refund.

Should you return the mattress, it isn’t resold or restocked. In fact, Helix Sleep locates a local place to donate it. When there’s no way Helix can find a way to donate your returned mattress, it’s recycled instead. Helix Independent Review

Helix Warranty

The Helix Mattress includes an awesome 10-year warranty that covers defects, but it has some limitations, exceptions, while the burden of proof is on the purchaser (like most guarantees ). Of course, you should be the first owner of the mattress to use the warranty, and you will need to be sure that you keep your receipt as proof of purchase.

As long as you follow all of the manufacturer’s expectations for use, your warranty will be valid. That means you need to use a suitable base (no adjustable bed frames or slats more than 4 inches apart) and that you don’t use the mattress improperly – no jumping on the bed!

If your Helix starts to show an indentation of 1 inch or longer, something that usually happens when low-density foams break down, then you could qualify for a repair or replacement of your Helix.

What’s The Best Way To Care For Your Helix?

Helix mattresses need no turning, but it is recommended that you rotate the mattress perhaps a couple of times a year to prevent it from wearing down from excessive sagging.

For routine cleaning, it’s suggested to use cold water along gentle dish soap to clean any dirt or stains. Be certain that you clean using gentle circular motions, rather than rubbing.
