Helix Sleep markets hybrid mattresses manufactured using polyfoam comfort systems, dual-layer covers, and pocketed coil support cores enhanced using polyfoam base layers. Helix History

Helix Sleep offers full mattress customization. Customers are requested to complete a questionnaire that asks for their height, weight, firmness preferences, sleep position, and other elements. Based on these results, Helix Sleep will recommend one of the following six mattress options; each individual variant provides a one-of-a-kind combination of support and firmness:

  • Helix Sunset: ‘Soft’ firmness, targeted cushioning, and balanced support
  • Helix Moonlight: ‘Soft’ firmness, moderate cushioning, and additional support
  • Helix Midnight: ‘Medium’ firmness, targeted cushioning, and balanced support
  • Helix Dusk: ‘Medium’ firmness, moderate cushioning, and extra support
  • Helix Twilight: ‘Firm’ firmness, targeted cushioning, and balanced support
  • Helix Dawn: ‘Firm’ firmness, moderate cushioning, and additional support

Helix History

Helix Sleep mattresses that have targeted cushioning conform closely, which makes them ideal for those who sleep on their side. While hybrids that have moderate cushioning don’t conform as much and are suitable for all sleep positions. Lighter individuals may feel more comfy on variants with balanced support, while individuals who weigh 130 lbs or more often prefer the variants with additional support.

Helix Sleep also offers two variants with dual-firmness, the Helix Dual Balanced (with balanced support and targeted cushioning) and the Helix Dual Extra (with moderate cushioning and extra support). Both these variants have one ‘Firm’ side and one ‘Soft’ side, making them ideal for couples with differing preferences. Lastly, the Helix Nightfall is a hybrid designed for bigger, heavier people. This variant has an extra layer of memory foam for maximum support.

My review of Helix Sleep mattresses found that the customizable aspect conforms to sleepers with a large range of firmness preferences and body types. The mattresses also provide strong edge support, isolate movement well, and produce less noise than the average hybrid. Helix History

Construction Helix History

All nine of the various iterations of the mattress will differ slightly in construction, but for 6 of the 9 variants, the construction should be rather similar. The six core models (listed above) are 10 inches tall, made up of 6 inches of pocketed coils and 4 inches of foam.

Helix mattresses vary in firmness and density depending upon the foams utilized in order to get more/less firmness and more/less support. The four different foams used within Helix mattresses are high-grade polyurethane foam, memory foam, Helix Dynamic Foam, and a DuraDense Foam (aka support foam). Not all the beds have all of the foams – some just have 3 of the 4 – but it really won’t matter much for the buyer. The foams are merely levers that Helix Sleep can pull to be able to offer 9 different versions (and hopefully have a model for everybody). Helix History

Underneath, I quickly discuss the construction (materials and quality) of your average Helix mattress, the Helix Midnight.

helix-midnight-construction

Cover – Initially, all Helix mattresses come with the same cover, made of 100 percent polyester. I found it to be stretchy and thin, allowing for some great breathability. But, if you prefer something more amped up, you can choose to swap out the standard cover for the UltraCool one, which is made up of a phase change fabric for heat regulation.

Comfort Layer – Up top, you’ll discover a thick layer of memory foam. This material has a slow response to pressure, meaning you’re probably going to encounter some great body contouring. While it might seem strange for a purportedly medium firmness bed to make use of a memory foam comfort layer, it is important to remember that the feeling of deep sinkage does not necessarily translate to softness; in fact, most of the time it produces quite a firm feeling.

Transition Layer – After getting past the memory foam comfort layer, you will uncover a transition layer of poly foam. This layer works to curb the sinkage of the memory foam and establish a supportive, medium firm feel as you hit the individually wrapped coils below.

Support Layer – The bulk of the mattress is made up of this segment of individually wrapped coils. This system gives a supportive lift to the construction, working to position the sleeper “on top” of the mattress, as opposed to “in it”. Because the coils are wrapped individually, they are also going to give extra breathability as air flows in between the spaces in the coils.

Base Layer – Last but not least, you’ll uncover a thin section of high-density poly foam. This section does not really affect the feel of the mattress too much, working mostly to give the individually wrapped coils something off of which to react.

Firmness and Support

After having a peek at the construction of the Helix mattresses, let’s chat about their different firmness levels and feels.

helix-mattress-firmness-and-support-scale

The firmness of the Helix is going to vary widely depending on the variant you select. The Helix Midnight and Dusk, have moderate firmness levels, which is going to be very versatile and thus exceptionally popular. If you have more specific preferences, however, Helix Sleep is happy to oblige you with more options.

Laying down on the Helix Midnight, the memory foam comfort layer is soft and produces some high quality body shaping, while the other materials in the mattress work to counteract this and make an overall firmer composition. The firmer support foams and pocketed coils also help with re-positioning.

For those who sleep on their back, there’s just enough good comfort material in the Helix Midnight to conform to your lumbar while supporting your whole back in a neutral position. For heavier buyers or people who want a firmer mattress, there are two more choices for you in the Helix Twilight and Helix Dawn variants.

Majority of side sleepers will feel totally comfy on the Midnight, however, if you’re needing less pressure while still going with a versatile medium firmness, you might decide to take a look at the Helix Dusk, which utilizes a body-conforming latex-alternative foam that is breathable and gives the surface a little bit of bounce.

Those who sleep on their side typically have to be more mindful of pressure because they sleep with all their weight on a tinier area. People who are smaller than average or people looking for a lot of pressure relief might want to stay with the plusher models.

Stomach sleepers should feel supported in the Midnight, particularly if this is not their main position or they have a tendency to change things up a lot. Firmer mattresses may be preferable for exclusive stomach sleepers so they can ensure their hips do not dip and over-arch their spine.

Finally, Helix Sleep recommends Helix for sleepers up to 350 lbs or partners who weigh a maximum of 250 lbs each. In the event you or your partner are substantially bigger than average, Helix has also created a bed called the Nightfall that’s created to accommodate a total weight of 1000 pounds.

Couples with differing body types or tastes may also pick a dual comfort model that combines Firm with Plush.

Bear in mind that if none of those models feel right, you could always check out the four other beds in the new collection: the Sunset (plush, softer than the Moonlight), Dusk (moderate feel, slightly firmer compared to the Midnight), Twilight (firm, made for side sleepers), or Dawn (the firmest option in the collection).

Motion Transfer

Now, let’s chat about motion transfer, or the amount of activity that’s detectable from one side of the mattress to the other. While this will be crucial for many buyers, those who sleep with a spouse may find it particularly interesting as it’ll show just how bothered you may be by your bed mate’s nighttime movements. Helix History

Based on my observation, Helix Sleep surpasses expectations for hybrids in this space because of the amount and quality of foam it contains, as well as the individually wrapped coils which help keep motion at its source. If you are a light sleeper concerned that movement from the opposite side of the mattress will wake you, then you should not have a lot of concern with this mattress. I would say that any of the Helix mattresses would be a good option for couples.

Sinkage

When getting a brand-new mattress, most men and women want to know whether they’ll feel as though they are sinking “into” the it or laying “on top” of it.

Even though you’re going to experience some immediate sinkage in the soft foam at the top, by the time you sink through those layers, you will hit the individually-wrapped coils and find great support. This combo will interest a vast assortment of individuals, but will satisfy stomach and back sleepers the most.

Edge Support

Though I do feel the memory foam collapse as I sit near the edge of the bed, the coils prevent the mattress from collapsing too much beyond that. I feel very secure seated on the mattress.

In my opinion, Helix mattresses perform above average for edge support in comparison to other bed-in-a-box brands, and this is due to their newly updated edges that contain reinforcement in the coil system. There may be a little compression at the comfort foams when you sit with all your weight on the side, but laying on the side should feel comfy and safe. Partners who need more space to stretch out typically appreciate stronger edges.

Lying down, I also feel like I can get close to the edge of the mattress without feeling like I’ll roll over or be ejected from the mattress. Overall, I think that the Helix mattress has great edge support.

100 Night Sleep Trial

Among the best features of buying a mattress-in-a-box online is the sleep trials that they typically come with. Helix is no different. You customize the mattress that is meant for you, place your order, and in a couple of weeks, it is delivered to your home. From the moment you click to order the mattress, you have 100 nights to check it out (minus the time for delivery, so it’s more like 90 nights). If it isn’t perfect, you can return it free of charge, and receive a complete refund.

If you do return the mattress, it is not restocked or resold. In fact, Helix locates a local place to donate it. If there is no way Helix Sleep can find a way to donate your returned mattress, it is recycled instead. Helix History

Helix Warranty

Helix offers a generous 10-year guarantee that covers defects, but it comes with a few limitations, exceptions, while the burden of proof is on the customer (like most warranties). Of course, you should be the first owner of the Helix to use the guarantee, and you need to be sure that you keep your receipt as proof of purchase.

As long as you follow all of Helix’s expectations for use, your warranty should be valid. That means you need to have a suitable base (no adjustable bed frames or slats more than 4″ apart) and you don’t use the mattress improperly – no jumping on it!

If your Helix begins to show an indentation of 1 inch or longer, something that usually happens when low-density foams break down, then you could qualify for a replacement or repair of your Helix.

What’s The Best Way To Care For Your Helix?

Helix mattresses need no flipping, but it’s suggested that you rotate the mattress possibly a couple of times a year to prevent it from wearing down from excessive sagging.

For regular cleanup, it is advised to use cold water with gentle dish soap to clean any stains or dirt. Be sure to wash using soft circular motions, instead of rubbing.
