Helix Sleep markets hybrid mattresses made with dual-layer covers, polyfoam comfort systems, and pocketed coil support cores reinforced using polyfoam base layers. Helix For Side Sleepers
Helix Sleep allows complete mattress customization. Buyers are asked to complete a survey that asks for their height, weight, sleep position, firmness preferences, and other options. Then based on these results, Helix Sleep will recommend one of the following six mattress variants; each respective variant gives a one-of-a-kind combination of firmness and support:
- Helix Sunset: ‘Soft’ firmness, targeted cushioning, and balanced support
- Helix Moonlight: ‘Soft’ firmness, moderate cushioning, and additional support
- Helix Midnight: ‘Medium’ firmness, targeted cushioning, and balanced support
- Helix Dusk: ‘Medium’ firmness, moderate cushioning, and additional support
- Helix Twilight: ‘Firm’ firmness, targeted cushioning, and balanced support
- Helix Dawn: ‘Firm’ firmness, moderate cushioning, and additional support
Helix Sleep mattresses with targeted cushioning conform closely, which makes them optimal for side sleepers. While mattresses with moderate cushioning do not conform as much and are great for pretty much all sleep positions. Lighter people may feel more comfy on variants with balanced support, while individuals who weigh 130 lbs or more often favor the models with extra support.
Helix Sleep also offers two variants with dual-firmness, the Helix Dual Balanced (with balanced support and targeted cushioning) and the Helix Dual Extra (with moderate cushioning and extra support). Both these variants have one ‘Firm’ side and one ‘Soft’ side, making them ideal for couples with differing tastes. Lastly, the Helix Nightfall is a hybrid designed for bigger, heavier individuals. This model has an additional layer of memory foam for maximum support.
My review of Helix Sleep mattresses found that the customizable selection conforms to sleepers with a wide variety of body types and firmness preferences. The mattresses also have strong edge support, isolate motion transfer well, and produce less noise than the average hybrid. Helix For Side Sleepers

Construction Helix For Side Sleepers
All 9 of the different iterations of this mattress will differ slightly in construction, but for 6 of the 9 models, the construction should be fairly similar. The 6 core variants (listed above) are 10 inches tall, made up of 6 inches of individually wrapped coils and 4 inches of foam.
Helix mattresses vary in density and firmness depending on the foams used in order to get more/less support and more/less firmness. The 4 unique foams utilized within Helix mattresses are memory foam, high-grade polyurethane foam, Helix Dynamic Foam, and a DuraDense Foam (aka support foam). Not all of the variants have all the foams – some only have 3 of the 4 – but it really shouldn’t matter much for the buyer. The foams are merely levers that Helix Sleep can pull to be able to offer nine unique variants (and hopefully have a mattress for everybody). Helix For Side Sleepers
Below, I quickly discuss the construction (materials and quality) of the typical Helix mattress, the Helix Midnight.
Cover – Originally, all Helix mattresses have exactly the same cover, made of 100% polyester. I found it to be pliable and thin, allowing for some great breathability. But, if you prefer something more luxurious, you can elect to swap out the standard cover for the UltraCool one, which is composed of a phase change fabric to regulate temperature.
Comfort Layer – Up top, you will find a thick layer of memory foam. This type of foam has a slow response to pressure, meaning you are probably going to encounter some satisfying body shaping. Even though it may seem strange for a purportedly medium firm bed to make use of a memory foam comfort layer, it’s important to remember that the presence of deep sinkage doesn’t necessarily translate to softness; in fact, most of the time it gives quite a firm feel.
Transition Layer – After sinking through the comfort layer, you’ll uncover a transition layer of poly foam. This layer of foam works to suppress the sinkage of the memory foam and set a supportive, medium firm feel as you reach the pocketed coils underneath.
Support Layer – Most of the mattress is made up of this segment of individually wrapped coils. This system brings a supportive lift into the construction, working to place the sleeper “on top” of the bed, as opposed to “in it”. Because the coils are individually wrapped, they’re also going to allow additional breathability as air flows in between the spaces in the coils.
Base Layer – Last but not least, you’ll find a thin segment of high-density poly foam. This section does not affect the feel of the mattress too much, functioning mostly to give the individually wrapped coils something off of which to react.
Firmness and Support
After taking a peek at the construction of the Helix mattresses, let us discuss their different feels and firmness levels.
The firmness level of the Helix will differ widely depending on the variant you choose. The Helix Dusk and Midnight, have moderate firmness levels, which will be quite versatile and thus best-selling. If you have more specific needs, however, Helix Sleep is happy to oblige you with additional choices.
Laying down on the Helix Midnight, the memory foam layer is soft and generates some high quality body shaping, while the other materials in the Midnight work to counteract this and create an overall firmer structure. The individually-wrapped coils and the firmer support foams also help with re-positioning.
For those who sleep on their back, there’s enough good comfort material in the Helix Midnight to conform to your lumbar while supporting your whole upper spine in a neutral position. For larger sleepers or people who want a firmer mattress, there are two more models for you in the Helix Dawn and Helix Twilight variants.
Many side sleepers will feel totally comfortable on the Midnight, however, if you’re wanting less pressure while still going with a versatile medium firmness, you might want to take a look at the Helix Dusk, which uses a body-conforming latex-alternative foam that is breathable and provides the surface a little bit of bounce.
Those who sleep on their side typically need to be mindful of pressure because they sleep with all of their weight on a smaller region. People who are lighter than average or those in the market for plenty of pressure relief may want to stick to the plusher models.
Those who sleep on their stomach should feel comfortable in the Midnight, especially if this is not their primary position or they tend to change things up a lot. Firmer choices may be preferable for exclusive stomach sleepers so that they can make sure their hips do not dip and over-arch their spine.
Lastly, the manufacturer recommends Helix mattresses for sleepers up to 350 pounds or couples that weigh up to 250 pounds each. If you or your partner are substantially bigger than average, Helix has also created a bed called the Nightfall that’s created to accommodate a total weight of 1000 pounds.
Couples with different body types or preferences may also select a dual comfort model that combines Firm with Plush.
Bear in mind that if neither of those models seem quite right, you can always check out the four other models in the newest collection: the Sunset (plush, softer compared to the Moonlight), Dusk (moderate feel, a little firmer compared to the Midnight), Twilight (firm, designed for side sleepers), or Dawn (the firmest variant of the bunch).
Now, let’s talk about motion transfer, or the amount of disturbance that’s noticeable from one side of the mattress to the other. While this is going to be crucial for many people, those who sleep with a spouse may find it especially intriguing as it’ll show just how bothered you will be by your bed mate’s nighttime movements. Helix For Side Sleepers
Based on my observation, Helix Sleep exceeds expectations for hybrids in this space because of the amount and quality of foam it incorporates, as well as the individually wrapped coils that help trap motion at its source. If you’re a light sleeper afraid that movement from the other side of the mattress will bother you, then you shouldn’t have a lot of concern with this hybrid. I would say that all of the Helix mattresses are a good choice for couples.
While getting a brand-new mattress, the majority of people wish to know whether they will feel as though they’re sinking “into” the mattress or laying “on top” of it.
While you may encounter some immediate sinkage from the soft foam on top, when you sink through these layers, you are going to reach the pocketed coils and feel great support. This combination will interest a vast range of individuals, but will satisfy stomach and back sleepers the most.
Though I do feel the foam compress as I sit close to the edge of the mattress, the pocketed coils stop the mattress from collapsing too much beyond that. I feel quite secure sitting on the mattress.
In my view, Helix mattresses are well above average for edge support in comparison to other bed-in-a-box brands, and this is because of their newly updated edges that contain reinforcement in the coil unit. There may be some compression in the comfort foams when you sit with all your weight on the side, but lying on the side will feel comfortable and secure. Couples who want more space to stretch out typically appreciate strong edges.
Lying down, I also feel like I can get near the edge of the bed without feeling like I will fall off or be ejected from the mattress. Overall, I believe the Helix has great edge support.
100 Night Sleep Trial
Among the best features of buying a bed-in-a-box online is the sleep trials they usually include. Helix Mattress is not any different. You customize the mattress that’s intended for you, place your order, and within a couple of weeks, it is delivered to your door. From the minute you click to order the mattress, you have 100 nights to try it out (minus the time for delivery, so it’s more like 90 nights). If it is not what you wanted, you can return it free, and get a complete refund.
If you do return the mattress, it is not resold or restocked. Actually, Helix Sleep does its best to locate a local place to donate it. If there’s no way Helix can find a way to donate your refunded mattress, they have it recycled instead. Helix For Side Sleepers
Helix offers a generous 10-year warranty that covers flaws, but it comes with a few limitations, exceptions, plus the burden of proof is on the customer (like most guarantees ). Needless to say, you should be the original owner of the mattress to make use of the guarantee, and you will need to be sure you save your receipt as proof of purchase.
Provided that you follow all Helix’s expectations for use, your warranty should be valid. That means you will need to use a proper foundation (no adjustable bed frames or slats over 4″ apart) and that you don’t use the mattress improperly – no jumping on the bed!
If your mattress begins to show an indentation of 1 inch or more, which is what generally happens when low-density foams break down, then you could qualify for a replacement or repair of your mattress.

What’s The Best Way To Care For Your Helix?
Helix mattresses need no turning, but it’s suggested that you rotate the mattress perhaps a couple of times a year to keep it from wearing down from excess sagging.
For regular cleanup, it is suggested to use cool water along gentle dish detergent to clean any stains or dirt. Make certain to clean using soft circular movements, rather than rubbing.
