Helix Sleep offers hybrid mattresses manufactured with polyfoam comfort systems, dual-layer covers, and pocketed coil support cores fortified using polyfoam base layers. Helix Chicago
Helix Sleep allows complete mattress customization. Customers are asked to complete a survey that asks for their weight, height, sleep position, firmness preferences, and other factors. Then based on these results, Helix Sleep will recommend one of the following six mattress options; each respective option offers a one-of-a-kind combination of firmness and support:
- Helix Sunset: ‘Soft’ firmness, targeted cushioning, and balanced support
- Helix Moonlight: ‘Soft’ firmness, moderate cushioning, and additional support
- Helix Midnight: ‘Medium’ firmness, targeted cushioning, and balanced support
- Helix Dusk: ‘Medium’ firmness, moderate cushioning, and extra support
- Helix Twilight: ‘Firm’ firmness, targeted cushioning, and balanced support
- Helix Dawn: ‘Firm’ firmness, moderate cushioning, and extra support
Helix Sleep hybrids that have targeted cushioning conform closely, making them ideal for side sleepers. While hybrids with moderate cushioning do not conform as much and are suitable for pretty much all sleep positions. Lighter people may feel most comfortable on variants with balanced support, while those who weigh 130 lbs or more often prefer the variants with extra support.
Helix Sleep also offers 2 variants with dual-firmness, the Helix Dual Balanced (with balanced support and targeted cushioning) and the Helix Dual Extra (with moderate cushioning and extra support). Both of these mattresses have one ‘Firm’ side and one ‘Soft’ side, which makes them ideal for couples with differing tastes. Last, the Helix Nightfall is a hybrid designed for bigger, heavier individuals. This mattress has an extra layer of memory foam for maximum support.
My review of Helix Sleep mattresses found that the customizable aspect accommodates sleepers with a wide variety of firmness preferences and body types. The mattresses also provide strong edge support, isolate movement nicely, and create less noise than the normal hybrid. Helix Chicago

Construction Helix Chicago
All nine of the different iterations of this mattress will differ slightly in construction, but for 6 of the 9 variants, the construction should be fairly similar. The six core variants (listed above) are 10 inches tall, composed of 6 inches of individually wrapped coils and 4 inches of foam.
Helix mattresses differ in density and firmness based upon the foams used in order to get more/less support and more/less firmness. The four different foams used within Helix mattresses are high-grade polyurethane foam, memory foam, Helix Dynamic Foam, and a DuraDense Foam (aka support foam). Not all the models have all of the foams – some just have three of the four – but it really won’t matter much for the buyer. The foams are just levers that Helix Sleep can pull in order to offer 9 different mattresses (and hopefully have a model for everybody). Helix Chicago
Below, I briefly talk about the construction (materials and quality) of the average Helix mattress, the Helix Midnight.
Cover – Initially, all Helix mattresses have exactly the same cover, made of 100 percent polyester. I thought it to be stretchy and thin, allowing for some great breathability. But, if you want something more lavish, you can elect to swap out the normal cover for the brand’s UltraCool one, which is composed of a phase-change material to regulate heat.
Comfort Layer – Up top, you’ll find a heavy layer of memory foam. This material has a slow response to pressure, meaning you’re likely to experience some satisfying body contouring. While it might seem odd for a purportedly medium firmness bed to feature a memory foam layer, it is important to remember that the presence of deep sinkage does not always translate to softness; in actuality, most of the time it gives quite a firm feel.
Transition Layer – After sinking through the memory foam comfort layer, you will uncover a transition layer of poly foam. This layer works to curb the sinkage of the comfort layer and create a supportive, medium firm feel as you hit the individually wrapped coils below.
Support Layer – Most of the mattress consists of this section of individually wrapped coils. This system brings a supportive lift to the construction, working to put the sleeper “on top” of the bed, as opposed to “in it”. Since the coils are individually wrapped, they are also likely to allow extra breathability as air flows through the spaces in the coils.
Base Layer – Last but not least, you will find a thin section of high-density poly foam. This segment doesn’t really affect the feel of the mattress too much, functioning mostly to give the individually wrapped coils something off of which to respond.
Firmness and Support
After having a look at the construction of the Helix mattresses, let’s chat about their varying feels and firmness levels.
The firmness of the Helix is going to vary widely depending on which version you select. The Helix Dusk and Midnight, have medium firmness levels, which is going to be very versatile and thus best-selling. If you are more particular, however, Helix Sleep would be happy to provide you with more choices.
Laying down on the Helix Midnight, the uppermost foam comfort layer is soft and produces some high quality body contouring, while the rest of the materials within the Midnight work to counteract this and make an overall firmer structure. The pocketed coils and the firmer support foams also assist with re-positioning.
For those who sleep on their back, there’s enough good comfort material in the Helix Midnight to conform to your lumbar while supporting your back in a neutral position. For larger sleepers or those who prefer a firmer bed, there are 2 more options for you in the Helix Dawn and Helix Twilight models.
Most side sleepers will feel totally comfy on the Midnight, however, if you’re wanting a bit less pressure while still sticking with a flexible medium firmness, you may want to check out the Helix Dusk, which utilizes a body-conforming latex-alternative foam that’s breathable and gives the surface a little bit of bounce.
Those who sleep on their side typically need to be mindful of pressure since they sleep with all of their weight on a smaller area. Those who are smaller than average or people in the market for a lot of pressure relief might want to stick to the plusher variants.
Those who sleep on their stomach should feel supported in the Midnight, especially if this is not their main position or they tend to switch things up a lot. Firmer mattresses might be preferable for exclusive tummy sleepers so that they can make sure their hips don’t dip and over-arch their backbone.
Lastly, the manufacturer recommends Helix for sleepers around 350 pounds or couples who weigh up to 250 lbs each. If you or your spouse are significantly larger than average, Helix has also produced a mattress called the Nightfall that is built to accommodate a total weight of 1000 pounds.
Couples with differing types of bodies or preferences can also pick a dual comfort variant that pairs Firm with Plush.
Bear in mind that if none of those options feel quite right, you can always have a look at the 4 other models in the newest collection: the Sunset (plush, softer than the Moonlight), Dusk (medium feel, a little firmer compared to the Midnight), Twilight (firm, designed for side sleepers), or Dawn (the firmest option in the collection).
Now, let’s chat about motion transfer, or the amount of disturbance that is noticeable from one side of the mattress to the other. While this is going to be important for many buyers, those who sleep with a partner may find it especially interesting as it’ll show just how bothered you will be by your partner’s nighttime movements. Helix Chicago
According to my research, Helix surpasses expectations for hybrids in this space due to the amount and quality of foam it incorporates, in addition to the pocketed coils that help keep motion at its source. If you’re a light sleeper concerned that movement from the other side of the mattress will bother you, then you should not have much concern with this hybrid. I’d say that any of the Helix mattresses would be a good choice for couples.
When getting a new mattress, most people wish to know whether they’ll feel as though they are sinking “into” the it or lying “on top” of it.
Even though you’re going to encounter a little immediate sinkage from the soft foam at the top, when you sink through those layers, you are going to reach the individually-wrapped coils and feel amazing support. This combination will appeal to a vast assortment of sleepers, but will suit stomach and back sleepers the most.
While I do feel the memory foam collapse as I sit near the edge of the mattress, the individually-wrapped coils prevent the mattress from compressing too much beyond that. I feel quite secure sitting on the bed.
In my view, Helix mattresses are well above average for edge support in comparison to other bed-in-a-box brands, and this is because of their recently updated edges containing reinforcement in the coil system. There can be some compression in the comfort foams when you sit with your entire weight on the side, but lying on the side should feel comfortable and secure. Partners who need more space to stretch out typically appreciate strong edges.
Lying down, I also feel like I can get near the edge of the bed without feeling like I’ll roll off or be pushed off the mattress. Overall, I believe the Helix mattress has great edge support.
100 Night Sleep Trial
One of the best features of buying a mattress-in-a-box online is the sleep trials they usually include. Helix is no different. You customize the mattress that is meant for you, place your order, and in a couple of weeks, it is delivered to your door. From the moment you click to order the mattress, you have 100 nights to check it out (minus the time for delivery, so it is more like 90 nights). If it is not ideal, you can return it free of charge, and get a complete refund.
If you do return the mattress, it isn’t resold or restocked. Actually, the company does its best to locate a local place to donate it. If there is no way Helix can find a way to donate your returned mattress, it is recycled instead. Helix Chicago
Helix offers a generous 10-year guarantee that covers defects, but it has some limitations, exceptions, and the burden of proof is on the purchaser (like most guarantees ). Of course, you should be the first owner of the mattress to use the guarantee, and you need to be sure you save your receipt as proof of purchase.
As long as you follow all the manufacturer’s expectations for use, your warranty should be valid. That means you will need to use a proper foundation (no adjustable bed frames or slats more than 4″ apart) and that you don’t use the Helix improperly – no jumping on it!
If your Helix starts to have an indentation of 1 inch or more, which is what generally happens when low-density foams break down, you could qualify for a repair or replacement of your Helix.

What’s The Best Way To Care For Your Helix?
Helix mattresses need no turning, but it’s suggested that you rotate the mattress perhaps once or twice a year to keep it from wearing down from excessive sagging.
For routine cleanup, it is suggested to use cold water with gentle dish detergent to clean any stains or dirt. Be sure that you wash using gentle circular motions, instead of rubbing.
