Helix Sleep markets hybrid mattresses made using dual-layer covers, polyfoam comfort systems, and pocketed coil support cores fortified using polyfoam base layers. Helix Cat Skyscraper Grey

Helix Sleep allows complete mattress customization. Buyers are asked to fill out a questionnaire that discusses their weight, height, firmness preferences, sleep position, and other options. Based on these results, Helix Sleep will recommend one of the following six mattress models; each individual model provides a unique combination of support and firmness:

  • Helix Sunset: ‘Soft’ firmness, targeted cushioning, and balanced support
  • Helix Moonlight: ‘Soft’ firmness, moderate cushioning, and additional support
  • Helix Midnight: ‘Medium’ firmness, targeted cushioning, and balanced support
  • Helix Dusk: ‘Medium’ firmness, moderate cushioning, and extra support
  • Helix Twilight: ‘Firm’ firmness, targeted cushioning, and balanced support
  • Helix Dawn: ‘Firm’ firmness, moderate cushioning, and additional support

Helix Sleep mattresses that have targeted cushioning conform closely, making them optimal for side sleepers. While mattresses that have moderate cushioning do not conform as much and are great for pretty much all sleep positions. Lighter men and women may feel more comfortable on models with balanced support, while people who weigh 130 lbs or more often favor the models with additional support.

Helix Sleep also offers 2 mattresses with dual-firmness, the Helix Dual Balanced (with balanced support and targeted cushioning) and the Helix Dual Extra (with moderate cushioning and additional support). Both of these variants have one ‘Firm’ side and one ‘Soft’ side, making them suitable for couples with differing tastes. Last, the Helix Nightfall is a hybrid designed for bigger, heavier individuals. This model has an extra layer of memory foam for optimum support.

My review of Helix Sleep mattresses found that the customizable aspect conforms to sleepers with a large assortment of firmness preferences and body types. The mattresses also offer strong edge support, isolate motion transfer nicely, and create less noise than the normal hybrid. Helix Cat Skyscraper Grey

Construction Helix Cat Skyscraper Grey

All nine of the various iterations of this mattress will differ slightly in construction, but for 6 of the 9 models, the construction should be fairly similar. The 6 core variants (listed above) are 10 inches tall, made up of 6 inches of pocketed coils and 4 inches of foam.

Helix mattresses differ in density and firmness based upon the foams utilized in order to attain more/less support and more/less firmness. The 4 unique foams utilized within Helix mattresses are high-grade polyurethane foam, memory foam, Helix Dynamic Foam, and a DuraDense Foam (aka support foam). Not all of the models have all the foams – some just have 3 of the 4 – but it really won’t matter much for the purchaser. The foams are merely levers that Helix Sleep can pull to be able to offer 9 unique mattresses (and hopefully have a model for everyone). Helix Cat Skyscraper Grey

Underneath, I quickly discuss the construction (materials and quality) of the average Helix mattress, the Helix Midnight.

Cover – Originally, all Helix mattresses come with exactly the same cover, made of 100% polyester. I thought it to be pliable and thin, allowing for some nice breathability. However, if you want something more amped up, you can choose to swap out the normal cover for the UltraCool one, which is composed of a phase-change fabric for temperature regulation.

Comfort Layer – On top, you will discover a thick layer of memory foam. This type of foam has a slow response to pressure, which means you’re likely to experience some gratifying body contouring. Even though it may seem odd for a supposedly medium firmness mattress to feature a memory foam layer, it’s crucial to remember that the feeling of deep sinkage doesn’t always translate to softness; in fact, most of the time it generates quite a firm feel.

Transition Layer – After getting past the comfort layer, you will discover a transition layer of poly foam. This layer of foam works to suppress the sinkage of the memory foam and set a supportive, medium firm feeling as you hit the individually wrapped coils below.

Support Layer – The majority of the mattress consists of this segment of pocketed coils. This system gives a supportive lift into the construction, working to put the sleeper “on top” of the mattress, instead of “in it”. Since these coils are individually wrapped, they are also likely to allow additional breathability as air flows in between the spaces in the coils.

Base Layer – Last but not least, you’ll uncover a thin section of high-density poly foam. This segment doesn’t affect the feel of the bed too much, working mostly to give the individually wrapped coils something off of which to respond.

Firmness and Support

After having a peek at the construction of the Helix mattresses, let’s chat about their varying feels and firmness levels.

helix-mattress-firmness-and-support-scale

The firmness of the Helix will differ widely depending on the variant you pick out. The Helix Dusk and Midnight, have moderate firmness levels, which tends to be quite versatile and therefore best-selling. If you have more specific requirements, however, Helix Sleep will be happy to oblige you with additional choices.

Lying down on the Midnight, the uppermost foam comfort layer is soft and produces some high quality body contouring, while the rest of the materials in the Midnight work to counteract this and make an overall firmer structure. The pocketed coils and the firmer support foams also assist with re-positioning.

For those who sleep on their back, there is enough good comfort material here to conform to your lower spine while supporting your whole back in a neutral position. For larger buyers or those who want a firmer bed, there are 2 more models for you in the Helix Dawn and Helix Twilight variants.

Most side sleepers should feel perfectly comfortable on the Midnight, however, if you are needing a bit less pressure while still sticking with a flexible medium firmness, you might want to take a look at the Helix Dusk, which utilizes a body-conforming latex-alternative foam that is breathable and gives the surface a small bit of bounce.

Side sleepers typically have to be mindful of pressure since they sleep with all of their weight on a tinier area. People who are smaller than average or people in the market for plenty of pressure relief might want to stick to the plusher models.

Those who sleep on their stomach will feel comfortable in the Midnight, especially if this isn’t their primary position or they have a tendency to switch things up a lot. Firmer choices might be preferable for exclusive tummy sleepers so that they can ensure their hips don’t dip and over-arch their back.

Lastly, the manufacturer recommends Helix mattresses for sleepers up to 350 lbs or partners that weigh a maximum of 250 pounds each. If you or your spouse are significantly larger than average, Helix has also produced a mattress called the Nightfall that is made to accommodate a total weight of 1000 pounds.

Couples with differing body types or tastes can also select a dual comfort model that combines Firm with Plush.

Keep in mind that if neither of those options seem right, you could always have a look at the 4 other mattresses in the new collection: the Sunset (plush, softer than the Moonlight), Dusk (moderate feel, a little firmer compared to the Midnight), Twilight (firm, designed for side sleepers), or Dawn (the firmest option of the bunch).

Motion Transfer

Now, let’s talk about motion transfer, or the amount of disturbance that’s detectable from 1 side of the mattress to the other. While this is going to be significant for many buyers, those who sleep with a spouse may find it especially interesting as it’ll illuminate just how bothered you will be by your bed mate’s nighttime movements. Helix Cat Skyscraper Grey

Based on my observation, Helix Sleep exceeds expectations for hybrid mattresses in this space due to the quantity and quality of foam it incorporates, in addition to the individually wrapped coils that help trap motion at its source. If you are a light sleeper concerned that movement from the opposite side of the bed will wake you, then you should not have much concern with this hybrid. I’d say that any of the Helix mattresses would be a good choice for couples.

Sinkage

When buying a brand-new mattress, most people would like to know whether they will feel as though they’re sinking “into” the it or lying “on top” of it.

While you are likely to encounter a little immediate sinkage from the soft foam on top, by the time you sink through these layers, you will hit the individually-wrapped coils and find amazing support. This combo will appeal to a wide assortment of individuals, but will suit stomach and back sleepers in particular.

Edge Support

Though I do feel the foam compress as I sit near the edge of the mattress, the pocketed coils prevent the mattress from collapsing a lot . I feel quite secured seated on the bed.

In my view, Helix mattresses are well above average for edge support compared to other bed-in-a-box brands, and this is due to their newly updated edges that contain reinforcement in the coil unit. There may be a little compression in the comfort foams when you sit with all your weight on the side, but lying on the side will feel comfortable and safe. Couples who need more space to stretch out normally love strong edges.

Laying down, I also feel like I can get close to the edge of the mattress without feeling like I’ll fall over or be ejected from the mattress. Overall, I believe the Helix has great edge support.

100 Night Sleep Trial

Among the best features of buying a mattress-in-a-box online is the sleep trials they typically include. Helix is no different. You customize the mattress that is intended for you, place your order, and in a couple of weeks, it is delivered to your door. From the moment you click to purchase the mattress, you have 100 nights to try it out (minus the time for delivery, so it is more like 90 nights). If it isn’t perfect, you can return it for free, and receive a full refund.

If you do return the mattress, it isn’t restocked or resold. Actually, Helix Sleep does its best to locate a local place to donate it. If there is no way Helix can find a way to donate your returned mattress, it’s recycled instead. Helix Cat Skyscraper Grey

Helix Warranty

Helix Sleep offers an amazing 10-year guarantee that covers defects, but it has some limitations, exceptions, and the burden of proof is on the purchaser (like most guarantees ). Of course, you must be the original owner of the mattress to use the guarantee, and you need to be sure that you keep your receipt as proof of purchase.

As long as you follow all Helix’s expectations for use, your warranty is valid. That means you will need to use a suitable base (no adjustable bed frames or slats more than 4″ apart) and that you don’t use the Helix improperly – no jumping on it!

If your mattress starts to have an indentation of 1″ or more, which is what generally happens when low-density foams break down, you could qualify for a replacement or repair of your mattress.

What’s The Best Way To Care For Your Helix?

Helix mattresses require no turning, but it is recommended that you rotate the mattress possibly once or twice a year to prevent it from wearing down from excessive sagging.

For routine cleaning, it is suggested to use cold water with gentle dish soap to clean any stains or dirt. Be sure to wash using gentle circular movements, rather than rubbing.
