Helix Sleep offers hybrid mattresses manufactured with dual-layer covers, polyfoam comfort systems, and pocketed coil support cores reinforced with polyfoam base layers. Helix- Best Hybrid Mattress For Side Sleepers

Helix Sleep allows complete mattress customization. Buyers are asked to fill out a survey that asks for their weight, height, firmness preferences, sleep position, and other options. Based on these results, Helix Sleep will suggest one of the following six mattress variants; each respective model offers a one-of-a-kind combination of firmness and support:

  • Helix Sunset: ‘Soft’ firmness, targeted cushioning, and balanced support
  • Helix Moonlight: ‘Soft’ firmness, moderate cushioning, and additional support
  • Helix Midnight: ‘Medium’ firmness, targeted cushioning, and balanced support
  • Helix Dusk: ‘Medium’ firmness, moderate cushioning, and additional support
  • Helix Twilight: ‘Firm’ firmness, targeted cushioning, and balanced support
  • Helix Dawn: ‘Firm’ firmness, moderate cushioning, and extra support

Helix- Best Hybrid Mattress For Side Sleepers

Helix Sleep mattresses with targeted cushioning conform closely, which makes them optimal for those who sleep on their side. While hybrids that have moderate cushioning don’t conform as much and are great for pretty much all sleep positions. Lighter people may feel more comfortable on variants with balanced support, while people that weigh 130 pounds or more tend to favor the models with additional support.

Helix Sleep also offers two models with dual-firmness, the Helix Dual Balanced (with balanced support and targeted cushioning) and the Helix Dual Extra (with moderate cushioning and additional support). Both these mattresses have one ‘Soft’ side and one ‘Firm’ side, which makes them ideal for couples with differing preferences. Last, the Helix Nightfall is a hybrid designed for bigger, heavier individuals. This mattress has an additional layer of memory foam for optimum support.

My review of Helix Sleep mattresses discovered that the customizable selection conforms to sleepers with a large range of body types and firmness preferences. The mattresses also offer strong edge support, isolate motion transfer nicely, and create less noise than the normal hybrid. Helix- Best Hybrid Mattress For Side Sleepers

Construction Helix- Best Hybrid Mattress For Side Sleepers

All 9 of the various iterations of this mattress will differ slightly in construction, but for 6 of the 9 variants, the construction will be rather similar. The six core variants (listed above) are 10 inches tall, composed of 6 inches of pocketed coils and 4 inches of foam.

Helix mattresses differ in firmness and density based upon the foams used in order to get more/less support and more/less firmness. The four unique foams used within Helix mattresses are high-grade polyurethane foam, memory foam, Helix Dynamic Foam, and a DuraDense Foam (aka support foam). Not all of the variants have all the foams – some only have 3 of the 4 – but it really won’t matter much for the consumer. The foams are merely levers that Helix Sleep can pull to be able to offer nine distinct variants (and supposedly have a mattress for everybody). Helix- Best Hybrid Mattress For Side Sleepers

Underneath, I quickly discuss the construction (materials and quality) of the average Helix mattress, the Helix Midnight.

helix-midnight-construction

Cover – Originally, all Helix mattresses have exactly the same cover, made of 100% polyester. I found it to be stretchy and thin, allowing for some nice breathability. But, if you prefer something more lavish, you can choose to swap out the normal cover for the brand’s UltraCool one, which is composed of a phase change material to regulate temperature.

Comfort Layer – Up top, you’ll find a heavy layer of memory foam. This type of foam has a slow reaction to pressure, which means you are probably going to experience some satisfying body contouring. While it might seem strange for a purportedly medium firmness bed to incorporate a memory foam comfort layer, it is crucial to remember that the existence of deep sinkage does not necessarily translate to softness; in fact, most of the time it generates quite a firm feeling.

Transition Layer – After sinking through the comfort layer, you’ll find a transition layer of poly foam. This layer of foam works to curb the sinkage of the memory foam and establish a supportive, medium firm feeling as you reach the individually wrapped coils below.

Support Layer – The bulk of the mattress is made up of this section of individually wrapped coils. This system gives a supportive lift into the construction, working to place the sleeper “on top” of the bed, instead of “in it”. Since the coils are wrapped individually, they are also going to allow additional breathability as air flows through the spaces in the coils.

Base Layer – Last but not least, you will uncover a thin section of high-density poly foam. This segment doesn’t affect the feel of the mattress too much, functioning mostly to provide the pocketed coils something off of which to react.

Firmness and Support

After having a peek at the construction of the Helix mattresses, let’s discuss their different firmness levels and feels.

helix-mattress-firmness-and-support-scale

The firmness of the Helix is going to differ widely depending on the model you select. The Helix Midnight and Dusk, have medium firmness levels, which will be very versatile and therefore very popular. If you have more specific needs, however, Helix Sleep is happy to provide you with more options.

Lying down on the Helix Midnight, the uppermost foam comfort layer is soft and produces some quality body shaping, while the other materials within the Midnight work to counteract this and create an overall firmer composition. The pocketed coils and the firmer support foams also assist with re-positioning.

For those who sleep on their back, there is enough good comfort material in the mattress to conform to your lumbar while supporting your back in a neutral position. For larger buyers or those who want a firmer mattress, there are two more options for you in the Helix Dawn and Helix Twilight variants.

Most side sleepers will feel totally comfortable on the Midnight, however, if you’re needing less pressure while still sticking with a versatile medium firmness, you may want to check out the Helix Dusk, which utilizes a body-conforming latex-alternative foam that’s breathable and gives the surface a little bit of bounce.

Side sleepers typically have to be mindful of pressure since they sleep with all their weight on a smaller area. People who are lighter than average or people looking for a lot of pressure relief might want to stay with the plusher models.

Stomach sleepers will feel supported in the Midnight, particularly if this isn’t their primary position or they have a tendency to switch things up a lot. Firmer mattresses may be preferable for exclusive stomach sleepers so they can make sure their hips don’t dip and over-arch their back.

Lastly, the manufacturer recommends Helix for sleepers around 350 pounds or couples who weigh a maximum of 250 pounds each. If you or your spouse are significantly bigger than average, the company has also created a mattress called the Nightfall that’s created to accommodate a combined weight of 1000 lbs.

Couples with different types of bodies or preferences can also pick a dual comfort option that combines Firm with Plush.

Keep in mind that if none of these options feel right, you could always have a look at the four other mattresses in the newest collection: the Sunset (plush, softer compared to the Moonlight), Dusk (medium feel, slightly firmer than the Midnight), Twilight (firm, designed for side sleepers), or Dawn (the firmest option of the bunch).

Motion Transfer

Next up, let’s chat about motion transfer, or the amount of activity that’s noticeable from 1 side of the bed to the other. While this is going to be crucial for many buyers, those who doze with a spouse may find it particularly interesting as it will show just how bothered you’ll be by your partner’s nighttime movements. Helix- Best Hybrid Mattress For Side Sleepers

Based on my observation, Helix surpasses expectations for hybrid mattresses in this space because of the quantity and quality of foam it incorporates, in addition to the pocketed coils which help trap motion at its source. If you’re a light sleeper worried that movement from the other side of the bed will bother you, you should not have a lot of concern with this hybrid. I would say that all of the Helix mattresses would be a good choice for couples.

Sinkage

While buying a brand-new mattress, the majority of individuals want to know whether they will feel like they are sinking “into” the mattress or lying “on top” of it.

While you’re likely to experience a little immediate sinkage from the uppermost foam layers, by the time you sink through those layers, you will hit the individually-wrapped coils and find great support. This combo will appeal to a wide assortment of sleepers, but will satisfy back and stomach sleepers in particular.

Edge Support

While I do feel the memory foam compress as I sit near the edge of the mattress, the pocketed coils stop the mattress from compressing a lot beyond that. I feel very secured seated on the mattress.

In my view, Helix mattresses perform above average for edge support compared to other bed-in-a-box brands, and this is because of their freshly updated edges containing reinforcement in the coil system. There may be a little compression at the comfort foams when you sit with all your weight on the side, but lying on the side should feel comfortable and secure. Partners who want more space to stretch out typically appreciate strong edges.

Lying down, I also feel like I can get near the edge of the bed without feeling like I will fall over or be pushed off the mattress. Overall, I believe the Helix has great edge support.

100 Night Sleep Trial

One of the best features of buying a bed-in-a-box online is the sleep trials they typically come with. Helix Mattress is not any different. You customize the mattress that’s meant for you, place your order, and within two weeks, it’s delivered to your home. From the moment you click to buy the mattress, you have 100 nights to try it out (minus the time for delivery, so it’s more like 90 nights). If it isn’t perfect, you can return it for free, and get a full refund.

If you do return the mattress, it isn’t resold or restocked. Actually, Helix Sleep finds a local place to donate it. If there is no way Helix Sleep can find a way to donate your returned mattress, they have it recycled instead. Helix- Best Hybrid Mattress For Side Sleepers

Helix Warranty

Helix Sleep offers an awesome 10-year warranty that covers defects, but it comes with a few limitations, exceptions, plus the burden of proof is on the consumer (like most warranties). Of course, you should be the original owner of the mattress to make use of the guarantee, and you need to be sure that you keep your receipt as proof of purchase.

As long as you follow all of the manufacturer’s expectations for use, your warranty is valid. That means you need to have a proper base (no adjustable bed frames or slats over 4″ apart) and you don’t use the Helix improperly – no jumping on it!

If your mattress begins to show an indentation of 1″ or more, something that usually happens when low-density foams break down, you could be eligible for a replacement or repair of your Helix.

What’s The Best Way To Care For Your Helix?

Helix mattresses require no flipping, but it is recommended that you rotate the mattress perhaps a couple of times a year to prevent it from wearing down from excessive sagging.

For routine cleaning, it’s suggested to use cold water along gentle dish soap to clean any stains or dirt. Be certain that you wash using gentle circular movements, instead of rubbing.
