Helix Sleep markets hybrid mattresses made with dual-layer covers, polyfoam comfort systems, and pocketed coil support cores reinforced using polyfoam base layers. Helix Bed Vs Tuft And Needle

Helix Sleep allows complete mattress customization. Buyers are urged to complete a questionnaire that discusses their height, weight, sleep position, firmness preferences, and other options. Then based on these results, Helix Sleep will suggest one of the following 6 mattress models; each respective model gives a unique combination of firmness and support:

  • Helix Sunset: ‘Soft’ firmness, targeted cushioning, and balanced support
  • Helix Moonlight: ‘Soft’ firmness, moderate cushioning, and additional support
  • Helix Midnight: ‘Medium’ firmness, targeted cushioning, and balanced support
  • Helix Dusk: ‘Medium’ firmness, moderate cushioning, and additional support
  • Helix Twilight: ‘Firm’ firmness, targeted cushioning, and balanced support
  • Helix Dawn: ‘Firm’ firmness, moderate cushioning, and extra support

Helix Sleep mattresses that have targeted cushioning conform closely, making them optimal for side sleepers. While hybrids with moderate cushioning don’t conform as much and are ideal for pretty much all sleep positions. Lighter people may feel more comfy on variants with balanced support, while people that weigh 130 lbs or more tend to prefer the variants with additional support.

Helix Sleep also offers 2 mattresses with dual-firmness, the Helix Dual Balanced (with balanced support and targeted cushioning) and the Helix Dual Extra (with additional support and moderate cushioning). Both of these models have one ‘Firm’ side and one ‘Soft’ side, which makes them great for couples with differing preferences. Last, the Helix Nightfall is a hybrid designed for bigger, heavier individuals. This variant has an additional layer of memory foam for optimum support.

My review of Helix Sleep mattresses found that the customizable aspect conforms to sleepers with a large range of firmness preferences and body types. The mattresses also have strong edge support, isolate movement well, and create less noise than the average hybrid. Helix Bed Vs Tuft And Needle

Construction Helix Bed Vs Tuft And Needle

All nine of the different iterations of this mattress will differ slightly in construction, but for 6 of the 9 variants, the construction should be quite similar. The six core variants (listed above) are 10 inches tall, made up of 6 inches of individually wrapped coils and 4 inches of foam.

Helix mattresses differ in density and firmness depending upon the foams used in order to get more/less support and more/less firmness. The 4 unique foams used within Helix mattresses are memory foam, high-grade polyurethane foam, Helix Dynamic Foam, and a DuraDense Foam (aka support foam). Not all of the models have all the foams – some only have three of the four – but it really shouldn’t matter much for the consumer. The foams are just levers that Helix Sleep can pull in order to offer 9 unique variants (and supposedly have a model for everybody). Helix Bed Vs Tuft And Needle

Underneath, I quickly talk about the construction (materials and quality) of the average Helix mattress, the Helix Midnight.

helix-midnight-construction

Cover – Initially, all Helix mattresses come with the same cover, made of 100 percent polyester. I found it to be stretchy and thin, allowing for some nice breathability. However, if you prefer something more lavish, you can opt to swap out the normal cover for the brand’s UltraCool one, which is made up of a phase-change material to regulate heat.

Comfort Layer – On top, you’ll find a heavy layer of memory foam. This material has a slow response to pressure, meaning you’re probably going to encounter some gratifying body shaping. While it might seem strange for a purportedly medium firmness mattress to incorporate a memory foam comfort layer, it is crucial to remember that the presence of deep sinkage doesn’t always translate to softness; in fact, oftentimes it gives quite a firm feel.

Transition Layer – After getting past the comfort layer, you will find a transition layer of poly foam. This layer of foam works to curb the sinkage of the memory foam and set a supportive, medium firm feeling as you reach the pocketed coils underneath.

Support Layer – Most of the mattress consists of this segment of individually wrapped coils. This system brings a supportive lift to the construction, working to position the sleeper “on top” of the mattress, instead of “in it”. Because the coils are individually wrapped, they are also likely to allow additional breathability as air flows through the spaces in the coils.

Base Layer – Last, you’ll discover a thin segment of high-density poly foam. This section does not really affect the feel of the bed too much, working mostly to provide the individually wrapped coils something off of which to respond.

Firmness and Support

After taking a look at the construction of the Helix mattresses, let’s talk about their different feels and firmness levels.

The firmness of the Helix is going to differ widely depending on which version you select. The Helix Dusk and Midnight, have moderate firmness levels, which will be quite versatile and thus best-selling. If you are more particular, however, Helix Sleep is happy to oblige you with additional options.

Lying down on the Midnight, the uppermost foam layer is soft and generates some quality body shaping, while the rest of the materials in the mattress work to counteract this and create an overall firmer structure. The firmer support foams and individually-wrapped coils also help with re-positioning.

For back sleepers, there’s just enough good comfort material in the Helix Midnight to conform to your lower spine while supporting your whole back in a neutral position. For larger sleepers or people who prefer a firmer mattress, there are 2 more options for you in the Helix Twilight and Helix Dawn variants.

Most side sleepers should feel perfectly comfy on the Midnight, but, if you are needing a bit less pressure while still sticking with a versatile medium firmness, you might decide to check out the Helix Dusk, which uses a body-conforming latex-alternative foam that is breathable and gives the surface a little bit of bounce.

Those who sleep on their side typically need to be mindful of pressure because they sleep with most their weight on a tinier region. People who are smaller than average or people in the market for lots of pressure relief might want to stay with the plusher models.

Stomach sleepers will feel comfortable in the Midnight, especially if this is not their main position or they tend to switch things up a lot. Firmer mattresses may be preferable for exclusive tummy sleepers so that they can ensure their hips don’t dip and over-arch their back.

Last, the manufacturer recommends Helix for sleepers up to 350 lbs or couples that weigh a maximum of 250 pounds each. If you or your partner are significantly bigger than average, Helix has also created a bed called the Nightfall that’s constructed to accommodate a combined weight of 1000 pounds.

Couples with different body types or tastes can also select a dual comfort variant that pairs Firm with Plush.

Keep in mind that if none of these models feel quite right, you could always check out the 4 other mattresses in the new collection: the Sunset (plush, softer than the Moonlight), Dusk (moderate feel, slightly firmer than the Midnight), Twilight (firm, designed for side sleepers), or Dawn (the firmest option of the bunch).

Motion Transfer

Now, let’s talk about motion transfer, or the amount of activity that’s noticeable from 1 side of the bed to the other. While this will be significant for many sleepers, those who sleep with a spouse may find it particularly interesting as it will show just how bothered you’ll be by your bed mate’s nighttime movements. Helix Bed Vs Tuft And Needle

According to my research, Helix surpasses expectations for hybrids in this space due to the amount and quality of foam it contains, as well as the pocketed coils which help keep motion at its source. If you’re a light sleeper worried that motion from the other side of the bed will wake you, then you shouldn’t have much concern with this hybrid. I would say that all of the Helix mattresses are a good option for couples.

Sinkage

While buying a brand-new mattress, the majority of people would like to know whether they will feel as though they’re sinking “into” the mattress or lying “on top” of it.

Even though you may encounter some immediate sinkage from the uppermost foam layers, when you sink through those layers, you’ll reach the individually-wrapped coils and find fantastic support. This combination will interest a vast range of sleepers, but will satisfy back and stomach sleepers in particular.

Edge Support

While I do feel the foam collapse as I sit near the edge of the mattress, the coils prevent the mattress from collapsing a lot beyond that. I feel quite secure sitting on the mattress.

In my view, Helix mattresses are well above average for edge support in comparison to other bed-in-a-box brands, and this is due to their freshly updated edges containing reinforcement in the coil unit. There can be a little compression in the comfort foams when you sit with your entire weight on the side, but lying on the side should feel comfy and secure. Couples who want more space to stretch out typically appreciate strong edges.

Laying down, I also feel like I could get close to the edge of the mattress without feeling like I will fall off or be pushed off the mattress. Overall, I believe the Helix mattress has nice edge support.

100 Night Sleep Trial

One of the best features of buying a bed-in-a-box online is the sleep trials that they typically come with. Helix is not any different. You create the mattress that is made for you, place your order, and in two weeks, it’s delivered to your home. From the minute you click to buy the mattress, you’ve got 100 nights to try it out (minus the time for delivery, so it’s more like 90 nights). If it is not perfect, you can return it free of charge, and receive a full refund.

Should you return the mattress, it isn’t restocked or resold. In fact, the company finds a local place to donate it. If there’s no way Helix Sleep can find a way to donate your refunded mattress, it’s recycled instead. Helix Bed Vs Tuft And Needle

Helix Warranty

The Helix Mattress includes an amazing 10-year guarantee that covers defects, but it comes with a few limitations, exceptions, and the burden of proof is on the customer (like most guarantees ). Needless to say, you must be the original owner of the Helix to use the guarantee, and you need to be sure you keep your receipt as proof of purchase.

As long as you follow all Helix’s expectations for use, your warranty is valid. That means you need to have a proper base (no adjustable bed frames or slats over 4″ apart) and you don’t use the mattress improperly – no jumping on it!

If your Helix begins to show an indentation of 1″ or more, which is what typically happens when low-density foams break down, then you could be eligible for a repair or replacement of your Helix.

What’s The Best Way To Care For Your Helix?

Helix mattresses need no flipping, but it is recommended that you rotate the mattress perhaps a couple of times a year to keep it from wearing down from excess sagging.

For routine cleanup, it’s advised to use cold water with gentle dish detergent to clean any stains or dirt. Make sure that you clean using gentle circular movements, instead of rubbing.
