Helix Sleep markets hybrid mattresses manufactured using polyfoam comfort systems, dual-layer covers, and pocketed coil support cores reinforced with polyfoam base layers. Helix Adjustable Base Reviews

Helix Sleep offers complete mattress customization. Buyers are requested to fill out a questionnaire that asks for their height, weight, sleep position, firmness preferences, and other elements. Based on these results, Helix Sleep will recommend one of the following six mattress variants; each respective variant offers a unique combination of support and firmness:

  • Helix Sunset: ‘Soft’ firmness, targeted cushioning, and balanced support
  • Helix Moonlight: ‘Soft’ firmness, moderate cushioning, and additional support
  • Helix Midnight: ‘Medium’ firmness, targeted cushioning, and balanced support
  • Helix Dusk: ‘Medium’ firmness, moderate cushioning, and additional support
  • Helix Twilight: ‘Firm’ firmness, targeted cushioning, and balanced support
  • Helix Dawn: ‘Firm’ firmness, moderate cushioning, and extra support

Helix Adjustable Base Reviews

Helix Sleep hybrids with targeted cushioning conform closely, which makes them optimal for those who sleep on their side. While hybrids that have moderate cushioning don’t conform as much and are great for pretty much all sleep positions. Lighter individuals may feel most comfy on models with balanced support, while individuals who weigh 130 pounds or more tend to favor the variants with additional support.

Helix Sleep also markets 2 mattresses with dual-firmness, the Helix Dual Balanced (with targeted cushioning and balanced support) and the Helix Dual Extra (with additional support and moderate cushioning). Both these models have one ‘Firm’ side and one ‘Soft’ side, which makes them ideal for couples with differing tastes. Last, the Helix Nightfall is a hybrid designed for larger, heavier individuals. This model has an extra layer of memory foam for maximum support.

My review of Helix Sleep mattresses found that the customizable aspect accommodates sleepers with a large range of body types and firmness preferences. The mattresses also have strong edge support, isolate movement nicely, and create less noise than the normal hybrid. Helix Adjustable Base Reviews

Construction Helix Adjustable Base Reviews

All nine of the different iterations of the mattress will differ slightly in construction, but for 6 of the 9 models, the construction will be rather similar. The six core variants (listed above) are 10 inches tall, made up of 6 inches of pocketed coils and 4 inches of foam.

Helix mattresses vary in firmness and density based upon the foams used in order to achieve more/less support and more/less firmness. The 4 unique foams used within Helix mattresses are high-grade polyurethane foam, memory foam, Helix Dynamic Foam, and a DuraDense Foam (aka support foam). Not all the variants have all the foams – some just have three of the four – but it really won’t matter much for the buyer. The foams are merely levers that Helix Sleep can pull in order to offer 9 different variants (and supposedly have a model for everyone). Helix Adjustable Base Reviews

Underneath, I briefly talk about the construction (materials and quality) of your typical Helix mattress, the Helix Midnight.

helix-midnight-construction

Cover – Initially, all Helix mattresses come with the same cover, made of 100% polyester. I found it to be thin and stretchy, allowing for some great breathability. But, if you would like something more amped up, you can opt to swap out the normal cover for the brand’s UltraCool one, which is made up of a phase-change fabric to regulate heat.

Comfort Layer – On top, you will find a thick layer of memory foam. This material has a slow response to pressure, which means you are probably going to experience some great body contouring. Even though it may seem strange for a supposedly medium firm mattress to feature a memory foam comfort layer, it is important to remember that the existence of deep sinkage doesn’t necessarily translate to softness; in fact, oftentimes it gives quite a firm feeling.

Transition Layer – After getting past the memory foam comfort layer, you will discover a transition layer of poly foam. This layer of foam works to curb the sinkage of the comfort layer and set a supportive, medium firm feeling as you hit the individually wrapped coils underneath.

Support Layer – Most of the mattress is made up of this section of pocketed coils. This system gives a supportive lift into the construction, working to place the sleeper “on top” of the mattress, instead of “in it”. Since these coils are wrapped individually, they are also going to allow extra breathability as air flows through the spaces in the coils.

Base Layer – Last, you will find a thin segment of high-density poly foam. This layer doesn’t really affect the feel of the bed too much, working mostly to give the individually wrapped coils something off of which to respond.

Firmness and Support

After taking a look at the construction of the Helix mattresses, let us talk about their different feels and firmness levels.

helix-mattress-firmness-and-support-scale

The firmness of the Helix will vary widely depending on which version you select. The Helix Dusk and Midnight, have moderate firmness levels, which will be very versatile and thus best-selling. If you are more particular, however, Helix Sleep would be happy to oblige you with additional choices.

Lying down on the Helix Midnight, the uppermost foam layer feels soft and generates some quality body contouring, while the other materials within the mattress work to counteract this and make an overall firmer composition. The pocketed coils and the firmer support foams also help with re-positioning.

For those who sleep on their back, there is just enough good comfort material here to conform to your lumbar while supporting your whole back in a neutral position. For larger buyers or those who prefer a firmer mattress, there are two more options for you in the Helix Dawn and Helix Twilight models.

Majority of side sleepers should feel totally comfortable on the Midnight, however, if you are needing a bit less pressure while still sticking with a flexible medium firmness, you might decide to take a look at the Helix Dusk, which utilizes a body-conforming latex-alternative foam that’s breathable and provides the surface a little bit of bounce.

Side sleepers typically have to be mindful of pressure since they sleep with all their weight on a tinier region. Those who are smaller than average or people looking for lots of pressure relief might want to stay with the plusher variants.

Stomach sleepers should feel comfortable in the Midnight, especially if this isn’t their main position or they tend to switch things up a lot. Firmer mattresses may be preferable for exclusive stomach sleepers so that they can make sure their hips do not dip and over-arch their backbone.

Last, the manufacturer suggests Helix for sleepers up to 350 pounds or partners who weigh up to 250 lbs each. If you or your partner are significantly bigger than average, the company has also produced a mattress called the Nightfall that is constructed to accommodate a total weight of 1000 pounds.

Partners with differing body types or tastes can also pick a dual comfort variant that pairs Firm with Plush.

Keep in mind that if neither of those models feel right, you may always check out the 4 other variants in the new collection: the Sunset (plush, softer than the Moonlight), Dusk (moderate feel, slightly firmer compared to the Midnight), Twilight (firm, made for side sleepers), or Dawn (the firmest variant of the bunch).

Motion Transfer

Now, let’s chat about motion transfer, or the amount of activity that is detectable from one side of the bed to the other. While this will be significant for all people, those who sleep with a partner may find it particularly intriguing as it’ll illuminate just how bothered you’ll be by your bed mate’s nighttime movements. Helix Adjustable Base Reviews

According to my research, Helix Sleep surpasses expectations for hybrid mattresses in this space because of the amount and quality of foam it contains, as well as the individually wrapped coils which help keep motion at its source. If you’re a light sleeper concerned that movement from the other side of the mattress will bother you, you should not have much concern with this mattress. I’d say that any of the Helix mattresses would be a good option for couples.

Sinkage

When purchasing a brand-new mattress, the majority of people would like to know whether they will feel like they are sinking “into” the mattress or lying “on top” of it.

While you may experience some immediate sinkage in the soft foam on top, by the time you sink through those layers, you will find the individually-wrapped coils and find great support. This combo will interest a vast range of sleepers, but will satisfy stomach and back sleepers in particular.

Edge Support

Though I do feel the memory foam compress as I sit near the edge of the mattress, the individually-wrapped coils stop the mattress from collapsing too much beyond that. I feel quite secure seated on the mattress.

In my opinion, Helix mattresses are well above average for edge support in comparison to other bed-in-a-box brands, which is due to their freshly updated edges that contain reinforcement in the coil system. There can be some compression in the comfort foams when you sit with all your weight on the side, but lying on the side will feel comfortable and secure. Partners who want more space to stretch out typically appreciate stronger edges.

Lying down, I also feel like I can get near the edge of the mattress without feeling like I will fall over or be pushed off the mattress. Overall, I think the Helix has nice edge support.

100 Night Sleep Trial

Among the best features of purchasing a bed-in-a-box online is the sleep trials that they typically come with. Helix Sleep is no different. You create the mattress that’s intended for you, place your order, and in two weeks, it’s sent to your home. From the moment you click to order the mattress, you have 100 nights to check it out (minus the time for delivery, so it is more like 90 nights). If it is not perfect, you can return it for free of charge, and get a complete refund.

Should you return the mattress, it isn’t resold or restocked. Actually, Helix locates a local place to donate it. When there is no way Helix can find a way to donate your returned mattress, it is recycled instead. Helix Adjustable Base Reviews

Helix Warranty

Helix Sleep offers an awesome 10-year guarantee that covers defects, but it comes with limitations, exceptions, and the burden of proof is on the customer (like most warranties). Of course, you should be the original owner of the Helix to make use of the warranty, and you will need to be sure that you save your receipt as proof of purchase.

As long as you follow all the manufacturer’s expectations for use, your warranty will be valid. That means you will need to use a suitable base (no adjustable bed frames or slats more than 4 inches apart) and you don’t use the Helix improperly – no jumping on the bed!

If your Helix starts to show an indentation of 1 inch or longer, which is what usually happens when low-density foams break down, you could qualify for a replacement or repair of your Helix.

What’s The Best Way To Care For Your Helix?

Helix mattresses require no flipping, but it is suggested that you rotate the mattress possibly once or twice a year to keep it from wearing down from excessive sagging.

For regular cleaning, it’s advised to use cool water along gentle dish detergent to clean any dirt or stains. Make certain that you clean using gentle circular motions, instead of rubbing.
