Construction Does Puffy Mattress Need A Box Spring

The Puffy is essentially a memory foam mattress that measures a total of ten inches. It has a simple design with just 2 foam layers: one of thick memory foam and another of high-density poly foam.

Here are the details as listed on their website:

10″ MATTRESS | 2 LAYERS

6.5 – 8.5 Medium-Firm Comfort

4″ Cooling Cloud FoamPuffy’s gel-infused foam increases airflow 8x more than standard foam mattresses. Provides pressure relief and cooling system.

6″ Firm Core Support FoamExceptional support and spinal alignment for restorative sleep.

Components:

Cover – The cover fabric was quite thin, which provides airflow throughout the mattress. It’s made from polyester, which makes for a soft and elastic feel.

Comfort Layer – Made up of 4″ of gel memory foam, the comfort layer here is super soft and has a slow response to pressure, which means you are likely to sink in deep for some intense body contouring. While it’s normal for all-foam beds like this to incorporate a top section of memory foam, this layer in particular is very thick and should bring some satisfying relief to the hips and shoulders. Although memory foam has a bit of a reputation for overheating in the nighttime , Puffy has managed to mitigate this using a gel infusion intended to keep things nice and cool as you are sleeping.

Support Layer – Made up of 6″ of high-density poly foam, unlike the memory foam layer above it, this part has a quick response to pressure and is very firm. The combination of materials was especially selected to bring targeted relief to the spine. Does Puffy Mattress Need A Box Spring

Firmness

We discovered Puffy’s thick memory foam coating having a gentle, pressure-relieving feel. A lack of any sort of transition foam implies that you’re very likely to interact primarily with the high-density poly foam as you quickly sink through the memory foam comfort layer. Because of this, you’re most likely to feel as though you’re sleeping more “in” this mattress than “on top” of it. Although, if you would like an even softer feel, you may want to have a look at the Puffy Lux, which comes with an additional layer of memory foam for an ultra-plush vibe.

Pressure Map

One other important factor to consider when buying a new mattress is where pressure points are going to form while lying on top of it.

To help you picture where these tension spots might be, I placed a pressure map on top of the mattress and lied on my back, side, and stomach. You can see the results on the chart where pressure is represented from blue (low pressure) to red (high pressure).

BackLying on my back, I could really feel myself sinking into the mattress, together with the memory foam in the top layer working to contour to my body and fill in the space at my lumbar region. While this resulted in some great pressure relief in this position, it did make it difficult to move around and shift positions.

Side – Rolling onto my side, I felt some pressure relief. I am not overly surprised with this as side sleepers have a tendency to go for softer mattresses that offer cushiony support to the shoulders and hips, common problem areas for people who sleep in their sides.

Stomach – While the thick memory foam comfort layer is a huge benefit for side sleepers, it’s a bit of a mixed bag for stomach sleepers who usually opt for firmer structures that keep the spine in an even alignment. HereI could feel my hips sinking out of line with my shoulders, which created some discomfort in this position.

Motion Transfer

Next up, let us take a peek at the Puffy’s motion transfer, or the level of disturbance detectable from one side of the mattress to the other.

To illustrate this motion transfer, I dropped a 10lb. steel ball from heights of 4 inches, 8 inches and 12 inches and then measured the disturbance it caused: the larger the lines, the bigger the disturbance.

FYI: Each drop is meant to symbolize a different movement you’re most likely to encounter in bed, from tossing and turning (4″) to getting out of bed (8″) all the way to full on jumping (12″).

Puffy-Motion-Transfer

These are actually quite intriguing motion transfer outcomes. You’ll notice a slight spike in initial movement across the drops that quickly dissipates, which I’d attribute to the thick memory foam comfort layer. This material is great at absorbing and dampening motion, which makes it so you’re unlikely to be overly bothered by your partner’s tossing and turning in the night.

Sinkage Test

While buying a new mattress}, most people wish to know whether they will feel as though they’re sinking “into” the mattress or laying “on top” of it. To visualize this sinkage, I placed four balls of varying sizes and densities on the mattress and quantified how much they compressed the surface.

Puffy-Sinkage

6 lb medicine ball: 1.5 inches of sinkage.
10 lb steel ball: 2.5 inches of sinkage.
50 lb medicine ball: 4.5 inches of sinkage.
100 lb medicine ball: 7 inches of sinkage.

This tells me is that you’re very likely to sink in deeply through the foam layers within this mattress, resulting in a stuck-in-the-bed type feel that will make it a bit tricky to change positionsDoes Puffy Mattress Need A Box Spring

Edge Support

The edge support on the Puffy mattress will feel stable and make a solid, edge to edge usable sleep foundation. The compact base foam coupled with the supportive memory foam should create a very strong perimeter. Sleeping on this mattress you’re able to sense a consistent feel across the whole surface without having a “rolling out of the bed” feel. As far as sitting on the edge goes, you will feel some support.

101 Night Sleep Trial and Guarantee

The Puffy mattress has a 101 night sleep trial period. This trial period allows for more than enough time to try this mattress out. Giving you and your body about 3 months to adjust to the new and improved feel of your memory foam mattress. It is good to be aware that you should take advantage of testing this mattress in this time period. Anytime you get a brand new mattress your body needs a few weeks to months to fully adapt. If for any reason you get to the end of your trial period and it’s not a good fit, Puffy will work together with you to return and refund your purchase.

This mattress comes with a lifetime warranty which goes above and beyond what the standard warranty for the mattress industry is. This warranty indicates that Puffy really backs their product. Covering any abnormal defects or manufacturing mistakes. Minus the average wear and tear of a mattress. This gives consumers with the confidence that this can be a mattress that the company will stand behind.

Puffy Mattress Sleep Temperature?

The Puffy mattress uses cooling technology in each material of the mattress. The top layer of memory foam is a patent-pending cooling cloud foam that uses convection and conduction to dissipate heat and keep it away from the body. Additionally,a it is infused with gel that improves the airflow 8x more than standard foam mattresses.

The base foam is dense and supportive to make a solid base that will not allow you to sink into the mattress and help keep you closer to the surface at which less heat will build around the body. The cover is also breathable to aid in keeping cool. All this allows for the mattress to maintain an ideal temperature while sleeping.

Is The Puffy Mattress Right For You?

PROS

First and foremost, I would say this mattress could make an excellent pick for side sleepers as the thick comfort layer works to relieve strain in the shoulders and hips.

Also note that the Puffy evokes a classic memory foam texture, so could be good for anyone with a penchant for the material. Does Puffy Mattress Need A Box Spring

And lastly, this is one soft mattress, so could do wonders for anybody in search of a gentle, soothing structure.

CONS

While the memory foam is a significant selling point of this mattress, it does make things a bit uncomfortable for strict stomach sleepers who may find that it pushes their hips out of alignment with their shoulders.

It also contributes to a structure that doesn’t have very much bounce, which might be a detractor for people needing buoyant support.

It has a rather appropriate and aesthetically pleasing cloud pattern that actually adds to the appearance. The side panels are a dim grey durable cloth that compliment the mattress as well. Does Puffy Mattress Need A Box Spring

Unlike the conventional foam mattresses, this one is going to remain cool and will cradle you fairly well and will provide decent pressure relief. Puffy is very sturdy and includes motion isolation which makes it appropriate for all different kinds of sleepers.
