Construction Do Babies Need A Soft Mattress

The Puffy is essentially a memory foam mattress that measures a total of 10 inches. It has a straight forward design with just 2 foam layers: one of thick memory foam and another of high-density poly foam.

Here are the details listed on their website:

10″ MATTRESS | 2 LAYERS

6.5 – 8.5 Medium-Firm Comfort

4″ Cooling Cloud FoamPuffy’s gel-infused foam improves airflow 8x more than conventional foam mattresses. Provides pressure relief and cooling system.

6″ Firm Core Support FoamExceptional support and spinal alignment for healing sleep.

Components:

Cover – The cover fabric was pretty thin, which provides airflow throughout the mattress. It’s made from polyester, which makes for a soft and elastic material.

Comfort Layer – Comprised of 4″ of gel memory foam, the comfort layer here is soft and has a very slow response to pressure, which means you are likely to sink in deep for some intense body contouring. While it’s typical for all-foam beds like this to incorporate a top section of memory foam, this layer particularly is very thick and should bring some satisfying relief to the hips and shoulders. Although memory foam has a bit of a reputation for overheating in the nighttime , Puffy has managed to mitigate this with a gel infusion intended to keep things nice and cool while you are sleeping.

Support Layer – Composed of 6″ of high-density poly foam, unlike the memory foam layer above it, this section has a fast response to pressure and is quite firm. The combination of materials has been especially selected to deliver targeted relief to the spine. Do Babies Need A Soft Mattress

Firmness

We found Puffy’s thick memory foam coating with a gentle, pressure-relieving feel. A lack of any kind of transition foam implies that you’re very likely to interact mainly with the high-density poly foam as you quickly sink through the memory foam comfort layer. Because of this, you are most likely to feel as though you are sleeping more “in” this mattress than “on top” of it. Although, if you would like an even softer feel, you might want to check out the Puffy Lux, which comes with an additional layer of memory foam for an ultra-plush vibe.

Pressure Map

Another important factor to consider when purchasing a new mattress is where pressure points are going to form while lying on top of it.

To help you picture where these tension spots could be, I placed a pressure map on top of the mattress and lied on my back, side, and stomach. You can see the outcomes on the chart where pressure is represented from blue (low pressure) to red (high pressure).

Back – Laying on my back, I could really feel myself sinking into the mattress, together with the memory foam in the top layer working to contour to my body and fill in the space at my lumbar region. While this led to some fantastic pressure relief in this position, it did make it difficult to move around and change positions.

Side – Rolling onto my side, I sensed some pressure relief. I’m not too surprised with this as side sleepers tend to go for softer mattresses that offer cushiony support to the shoulders and hips, common problem areas for people who sleep in their sides.

Stomach – Though the thick memory foam comfort layer is a huge benefit for side sleepers, it is a bit of a mixed bag for stomach sleepers who usually opt for firmer mattresses that keep the spine in an even alignment. Here, I could feel my hips sinking out of line with my shoulders, which caused some discomfort in this position.

Motion Transfer

Now, let us take a look at the Puffy’s motion transfer, or the level of disturbance detectable from one side of the mattress to the other.

To illustrate this motion transfer, I dropped a 10lb. steel ball from heights of 4 inches, 8 inches and 12 inches and then measured the disturbance it caused: the bigger the lines, the bigger the disturbance.

FYI: Every drop is intended to signify another movement you’re most likely to experience in bed, from tossing and turning (4″) to getting out of bed (8″) all the way to full on jumping (12″).

Puffy-Motion-Transfer

These are actually quite interesting motion transfer results. You’ll see a small spike in initial movement across the drops that quickly dissipates, which I would attribute to the thick memory foam comfort layer. This material is excellent at absorbing and dampening motion, which makes it so you’re unlikely to be too bothered by your partner’s turning and tossing in the evening.

Sinkage Test

When buying a new mattress}, most people want to know whether they’ll feel like they’re sinking “into” the mattress or laying “on top” of it. To visualize this sinkage, I put four balls of varying sizes and densities on the mattress and measured how much they compressed the surface.

Puffy-Sinkage

6 lb medicine ball: 1.5 inches of sinkage.
10 lb steel ball: 2.5 inches of sinkage.
50 lb medicine ball: 4.5 inches of sinkage.
100 lb medicine ball: 7 inches of sinkage.

What this tells me is that you are very likely to sink in deeply through the foam layers in this mattress, resulting in a stuck-in-the-bed type feel that’ll make it a bit tricky to change positionsDo Babies Need A Soft Mattress

Edge Support

The edge support on the Puffy mattress will feel stable and make a solid, edge to edge usable sleep surface. The dense base foam paired with the supportive memory foam should create a very strong perimeter. Sleeping on this mattress you’re able to sense a consistent feel across the entire surface and not have a “rolling out of the bed” feel. As far as sitting on the edge goes, you will feel some support.

101 Night Sleep Trial and Guarantee

The Puffy mattress includes a 101 night sleep trial period. This trial period allows for more than enough time to try this mattress out. Giving you and your body about three months to adjust to the new and improved feel of your memory foam mattress. It is good to note that you should take advantage of testing this mattress in this time period. Anytime you get a brand new mattress your body needs a few weeks to even months to completely adapt. If for any reason you get to the end of your trial period and it’s not a good fit, Puffy will work with you to return and refund your purchase.

This mattress comes with a lifetime warranty which goes above and beyond what the standard warranty for the mattress business is. This guarantee indicates that Puffy actually backs their product. Covering any abnormal flaws or manufacturing mistakes. Minus the typical wear and tear of a mattress. This provides consumers with the assurance that this can be a mattress that the business is going to stand behind.

Puffy Mattress Sleep Temperature?

The Puffy mattress incorporates cooling technology in each material of this mattress. The top layer of memory foam is a patent-pending cooling cloud foam which uses conduction and convection to dissipate heat and keep it away from the body. It’s also infused with gel that improves the airflow 8x more than conventional foam mattresses.

The base foam is dense and supportive to create a solid base that will not allow you to sink into the mattress and also help keep you closer to the surface at which less heat will build around the body. The cover is also breathable to aid in keeping cool. All of this allows for the mattress to maintain an ideal temperature while sleeping.

Is The Puffy Mattress Right For You?

PROS

First and foremost, I’d say this mattress could make an excellent pick for side sleepers as the thick comfort layer works to relieve tension at the shoulders and hips.

Also note that the Puffy evokes a classic memory foam texture, so could be good for anybody with a penchant for the material. Do Babies Need A Soft Mattress

And finally, this is one soft mattress, so can do wonders for anybody seeking a gentle, calming mattress.

CONS

While the memory foam is a significant selling point of this mattress, it does make things a little uncomfortable for strict stomach sleepers who might discover that it sends their hips out of alignment with their shoulders.

It also contributes to a structure that does not have very much bounce, which could be a detractor for those in need of buoyant support.

Final Thoughts On The Puffy Mattress Do Babies Need A Soft Mattress

The Puffy mattress is a great choice for everyone that want to receive all the advantages of a foam mattress without overpaying. The simple design makes it a classic. This mattress is covered in a removable cover that can be unzipped and cleaned when needed. The top is stretchy and soft and fits nicely to the mattress. It has a rather appropriate and aesthetically pleasing cloud pattern that actually adds to the appearance. The side panels are a dim grey durable fabric that compliment the mattress as well. Do Babies Need A Soft Mattress

Unlike the conventional foam mattresses, this one is going to remain cool and will cradle you fairly well and will provide good pressure relief. Puffy is very sturdy and contains motion isolation which makes it appropriate for many different types of sleepers. Although, I’d like to state this mattress is an excellent choice for side sleepers because the thick relaxation layer works to alleviate tension at the shoulders and hips. In addition, the mattress offers proper body support and is a great selection for all people who suffer from back pain or joint pain. Do Babies Need A Soft Mattress
