Construction Consumer Reports Puffy Mattress

The Puffy is essentially a memory foam mattress that measures a total of ten inches. It features a straight forward design with just two foam layers: one of thick memory foam and also another of high-density poly foam.

Here are the details listed on their website:

10″ MATTRESS | 2 LAYERS

6.5 – 8.5 Medium-Firm Comfort

4″ Cooling Cloud FoamPuffy’s gel-infused foam increases airflow 8x more than standard foam mattresses. Provides pressure relief and cooling.

6″ Firm Core Support FoamOutstanding support and spinal alignment for healing sleep.

Components:

Cover – The cover fabric was pretty thin, which provides airflow throughout the mattress. It is made from polyester, which makes for a soft and elastic material.

Comfort Layer – Made up of 4″ of gel memory foam, the comfort layer here is super soft and has a very slow response to pressure, which usually means you are likely to sink in deep for some intense body contouring. While it’s typical for all-foam beds such as this to feature a top section of memory foam, this layer in particular is incredibly thick and should bring some satisfying relief to the hips and shoulders. And though memory foam has a reputation for overheating in the night, Puffy has been able to mitigate this using a gel infusion intended to keep things cool and nice while you are sleeping.

Support Layer – Made up of 6″ of high-density poly foam, unlike the memory foam layer above it, this part has a quick response to pressure and is quite firm. The combination of materials was specifically chosen to deliver targeted relief to the spine. Consumer Reports Puffy Mattress

Firmness

We discovered Puffy’s thick memory foam coating with a gentle, pressure-relieving feel. A lack of any kind of transition foam means that you’re likely to interact mainly with the high-density poly foam as you quickly sink through the memory foam comfort layer. Because of this, you’re likely to feel as though you’re sleeping more “in” this mattress than “on top” of it. Although, if you would like an even softer texture, you might want to have a look at the Puffy Lux, which has an additional layer of memory foam for an ultra-plush vibe.

Pressure Map

One other important factor to consider when buying a new mattress is where pressure points are going to form while lying on top of it.

To help you picture where these tension spots could be, I put a pressure map on top of the mattress and lied on my back, side, and stomach. You may see the results on the chart where pressure is represented from blue (low pressure) to red (high pressure).

Puffy-Mattress-Pressure-Map

BackLying on my back, I could really feel myself sinking into the mattress, with the memory foam in the top layer working to contour to my body and fill in the space at my lumbar region. While this led to a great pressure relief in this position, it did make it hard to move around and change positions.

Side – Rolling on my side, I sensed some pressure relief. I am not overly surprised by this as side sleepers tend to go for softer mattresses which provide cushiony support to the shoulders and hips, common problem areas for those who sleep on their sides.

Stomach – While the thick memory foam comfort layer is a big win for side sleepers, it’s a bit of a mixed bag for stomach sleepers who usually opt for firmer mattresses that keep the spine in an even alignment. HereI could feel my hips sinking out of line with my shoulders, which created some discomfort in this position.

Motion Transfer

Next up, let’s take a look at the Puffy’s motion transfer, or the level of disturbance detectable from one side of the mattress into the other.

To illustrate this motion transfer, I dropped a 10lb. steel ball from heights of 4 inches, 8 inches and 12 inches and measured the disturbance it generated: the larger the lines, the larger the disturbance.

FYI: Each drop is meant to symbolize another movement you are most likely to encounter in bed, from tossing and turning (4″) to getting out of bed (8″) all the way to full on jumping (12″).

Puffy-Motion-Transfer

These are really quite interesting motion transfer outcomes. You’ll notice a small spike in initial movement across the drops that quickly dissipates, which I would attribute to the thick memory foam comfort layer. This material is great at absorbing and dampening motion, which makes it so you are not likely to be too disturbed by your partner’s tossing and turning in the evening.

Sinkage Test

When buying a new mattress}, most people wish to know whether they’ll feel as though they’re sinking “into” the mattress or laying “on top” of it. To visualize this sinkage, I placed four balls of varying sizes and densities on the mattress and also measured how much they compressed the surface.

Puffy-Sinkage

6 lb medicine ball: 1.5 inches of sinkage.
10 lb steel ball: 2.5 inches of sinkage.
50 lb medicine ball: 4.5 inches of sinkage.
100 lb medicine ball: 7 inches of sinkage.

What this tells me is that you’re likely to sink in deeply through the foam layers within this mattress, resulting in a stuck-in-the-bed type feel that’ll make it a bit tricky to change positionsConsumer Reports Puffy Mattress

Edge Support

The edge support on the Puffy mattress will feel stable and create a solid, edge to edge usable sleep foundation. The compact base foam paired with the supportive memory foam should create a very strong perimeter. Sleeping on this mattress you’re able to feel a consistent feel across the whole surface and not have a “rolling out of the bed” feel. As far as sitting on the edge goes, you will feel some support.

101 Night Sleep Trial and Guarantee

The Puffy mattress includes a 101 night sleep trial period. This trial period should give you more than enough time to try this bed out. Giving you and your body roughly three months to adjust to the new and improved feel of your memory foam mattress. It is a good idea to be aware that you need to make the most of testing this mattress in this time period. Anytime you get a new mattress your body needs several weeks to months to fully adapt. If for some reason you get to the end of your trial period and it isn’t a good fit, Puffy will work with you to return and refund your purchase.

This mattress has a lifetime warranty which goes above and beyond what the standard warranty for the mattress industry is. This warranty indicates that Puffy really backs their product. Covering any abnormal defects or manufacturing errors. Minus the typical wear and tear of a mattress. This gives consumers with the confidence that this can be a mattress that the company is going to stand behind.

Puffy Mattress Sleep Temperature?

The Puffy mattress uses cooling technology in each material of this mattress. The top layer of memory foam is a patent-pending cooling cloud foam which uses conduction and convection to dissipate heat and keep it away from the body. It’s also infused with gel that improves the airflow 8x more than conventional foam mattresses.

The foundation foam is dense and supportive to make a solid base that will not let you sink into the mattress and keep you closer to the surface where less heat will build around the body. The cover is also breathable to aid in keeping cool. All of this enables for the mattress to maintain an ideal temperature whilst sleeping.

Is The Puffy Mattress Right For You?

PROS

First of all, I would say this mattress could make an excellent pick for side sleepers as the thick comfort layer works to alleviate tension at the shoulders and hips.

Also note that the Puffy evokes a classic memory foam feel, so could be good for anyone with a penchant for the material. Consumer Reports Puffy Mattress

And lastly, this is one soft mattress, therefore can do wonders for anybody seeking a gentle, soothing structure.

CONS

While the memory foam is a significant selling point of the mattress, it does make things a bit uncomfortable for strict stomach sleepers who may discover that it pushes their hips out of alignment with their shoulders.

It also contributes to a structure that doesn’t have very much bounce, which might be a detractor for those in need of buoyant support.

The Puffy mattress is a great choice for everyone that want to get all the benefits of a foam mattress without overpaying. The simple design makes it a classic. This mattress is covered in a removable cover that can be unzipped and cleaned when needed. The top is stretchy and soft and fits well to the mattress. It has a very suitable and aesthetically pleasing cloud pattern that actually adds to the look. The side panels are a dim grey durable cloth that compliment the mattress too. Consumer Reports Puffy Mattress

Unlike the conventional foam mattresses, this one is going to stay cool and will cradle you fairly well and will give decent pressure relief. Puffy is extremely sturdy and includes motion isolation that makes it suitable for many different types of sleepers. Although, I’d like to state this mattress is an excellent choice for side sleepers as the thick comfort layer works to alleviate strain in the shoulders and hips. Moreover, the mattress provides proper body support and is a fantastic choice for all people who suffer from back pain or joint pain. Consumer Reports Puffy Mattress
