Keep on reading below for my full review of the Puffy mattress.
Construction Can A Soft Mattress Cause Shoulder Pain
The Puffy is basically a memory foam mattress that measures a total of ten inches. It features a straight forward design with just two foam layers: one of thick memory foam and another of high-density poly foam.

Here are the details as listed on their website:
10″ MATTRESS | 2 LAYERS
6.5 – 8.5 Medium-Firm Comfort
4″ Cooling Cloud Foam: Puffy’s gel-infused foam improves airflow 8x more than standard foam mattresses. Provides pressure relief and cooling system.
6″ Firm Core Support Foam: Outstanding support and spinal alignment for healing sleep.
Cover – The cover fabric was quite thin, which encourages airflow throughout the mattress. It’s made from polyester, which makes for a soft and elastic feel.
Comfort Layer – Made up of 4″ of gel memory foam, the comfort layer here is soft and has a slow response to pressure, which usually means you are likely to sink in deep for some intense body contouring. While it’s normal for all-foam beds like this to incorporate a top section of memory foam, this layer in particular is very thick and should bring some satisfying relief to the hips and shoulders. Although memory foam has a reputation for overheating in the night, Puffy has managed to mitigate this with a gel infusion meant to keep things nice and cool as you are sleeping.
Support Layer – Composed of 6″ of high-density poly foam, unlike the memory foam layer above it, this part has a quick response to pressure and can be quite firm. The combination of materials has been specifically chosen to deliver targeted relief to the spine. Can A Soft Mattress Cause Shoulder Pain
We found Puffy’s thick memory foam coating with a gentle, pressure-relieving feel. A lack of any kind of transition foam implies that you are very likely to interact mainly with the high-density poly foam as you quickly sink through the memory foam comfort layer. Because of this, you are most likely to feel as though you are sleeping more “in” this mattress than “on top” of it. Although, if you would like an even softer texture, you might want to check out the Puffy Lux, which comes with an extra layer of memory foam for an ultra-plush vibe.
One other important aspect to consider when buying a new mattress is where pressure points are going to form while lying on top of it.
To help you visualize where these tension spots could be, I put a pressure map on top of the mattress and lied on my back, side, and stomach. You may see the results on the image where pressure is represented from blue (low pressure) to red (high pressure).
Back – Laying on my back, I could really feel myself sinking into the mattress, together with the memory foam in the top layer working to contour to my body and fill in the space at my lumbar region. While this resulted in a fantastic pressure relief in this position, it did make it hard to move around and change positions.
Side – Rolling on my side, I felt some pressure relief. I am not overly surprised with this as side sleepers tend to go for softer mattresses which offer cushiony support to the shoulders and hips, typical problem areas for those who sleep on their sides.
Stomach – While the thick memory foam comfort layer is a big win for side sleepers, it’s a bit of a mixed bag for stomach sleepers who usually opt for firmer structures that keep the spine in an even alignment. HereI could feel my hips sinking out of line with my shoulders, which caused some discomfort in this position.
Now, let’s take a peek at the Puffy’s motion transfer, or the level of disturbance detectable from one side of the mattress into the other.
To demonstrate this motion transfer, I dropped a 10lb. steel ball from heights of 4 inches, 8 inches and 12 inches and then measured the disturbance it caused: the bigger the lines, the larger the disturbance.
FYI: Every drop is meant to signify another movement you are likely to experience in bed, from tossing and turning (4″) to getting out of bed (8″) all the way to full on jumping (12″).
These are actually quite intriguing motion transfer results. You’ll see a slight spike in initial movement across the drops that quickly dissipates, which I’d attribute to the thick memory foam comfort layer. This material is great at absorbing and dampening motion, which makes it so you are not likely to be overly bothered by your partner’s tossing and turning in the evening.
When buying a new mattress}, most people want to know whether they’ll feel as though they’re sinking “into” the mattress or laying “on top” of it. To visualize this sinkage, I placed four balls of varying sizes and densities on the mattress and also measured how much they compressed the surface.
6 lb medicine ball: 1.5 inches of sinkage.
10 lb steel ball: 2.5 inches of sinkage.
50 lb medicine ball: 4.5 inches of sinkage.
100 lb medicine ball: 7 inches of sinkage.
What this tells me is that you are likely to sink deeply through the foam layers within this mattress, resulting in a stuck-in-the-bed type feel that will make it a bit difficult to change positions. Can A Soft Mattress Cause Shoulder Pain
The edge support on the Puffy mattress will feel secure and make a solid, edge to edge usable sleep foundation. The dense base foam coupled with the supportive memory foam should create a very strong perimeter. Sleeping on this mattress you are able to feel a consistent feel across the entire surface without having a “rolling out of the bed” feel. So far as sitting on the edge goes, you will feel some support.
101 Night Sleep Trial and Guarantee
The Puffy mattress has a 101 night sleep trial period. This trial period allows for more than enough time to try this bed out. Giving you and your body about three months to adjust to the new and improved feel of your memory foam mattress. It is good to note that you should take advantage of really testing this mattress in this time period. Anytime you buy a new mattress your body needs a few weeks to months to completely adjust. If for any reason you reach the end of your trial period and it isn’t a good fit, Puffy will work together with you to return and refund your purchase.
This mattress has a lifetime warranty which goes above and beyond what the typical warranty for the mattress industry is. This guarantee shows that Puffy actually backs their product. Covering any abnormal flaws or manufacturing errors. Minus the average wear and tear of a mattress. This provides consumers with the assurance that this can be a mattress that the company is going to stand behind.

Puffy Mattress Sleep Temperature?
The Puffy mattress incorporates cooling technology in each material of the mattress. The top layer of memory foam is a patent-pending cooling cloud foam that uses convection and conduction to release heat and keep it away from the body. Additionally,a it is infused with gel that increases the airflow 8x more than standard foam mattresses.
The foundation foam is dense and supportive to make a solid base that will not allow you to sink into the mattress and help keep you closer to the surface at which less heat will build around the body. The cover is also breathable to aid in keeping cool. All of this enables for your mattress to maintain an perfect temperature whilst sleeping.
Is The Puffy Mattress Right For You?
First of all, I’d say this mattress could make an excellent pick for side sleepers because the thick comfort layer works to relieve tension at the shoulders and hips.
Also note that the Puffy evokes a traditional memory foam feel, so can be good for anybody with a penchant for the material. Can A Soft Mattress Cause Shoulder Pain
And finally, this is one soft mattress, so could do wonders for anyone seeking a gentle, calming structure.
Though the memory foam is a significant selling point of this mattress, it does make things a bit uncomfortable for strict stomach sleepers who may find that it pushes their hips out of alignment with their shoulders.
It also contributes to a structure that does not have very much bounce, which could be a detractor for those in need of buoyant support.
